Parva 3 Chapter 113: haṁsaḍimbhakayordūtapreṣaṇam - hamsa and ḍimbhaka send the messenger

vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) Sage durvāsa stayed there itself with the great soul nārada, meditating on the principle of brahma and remained there comfortably. bhagavānapi govindastayorvāsamamanyata | Lord govinda ( kṛṣṇa) assigned a house for them to stay. tatastau haṁsaḍimbhakau tasminkāle mahīpatim ||3-113-2 brahmadattaṁ mahīpālaṁ pitaraṁ vīryaśālinam | prāvochatāmidaṁ vākyaṁ samantājjanasaṁsadi ||3-113-3 At this time, haṁsa and ḍimbhaka met their father, the lord of earth, the highly valiant king brahmadatta and spoke the following words at the assembly of people. rājasūyaṁ mahāyajṣaṁ pitaḥ kuru suyatnataḥ | asminmāsi nṛpaśreṣṭha yatāvo yajṣasiddhaye ||3-113-4 (haṁsa and ḍimbhaka said) O Father! Please perform the great sacrifice, the royal sacrifice, with attention. Perform the sacrifice during this month, O the best of kings! Let us prepare for accomplishing the sacrifice. āvāṁ te'dya mahārāja diśāṁ vijayatatparau | yatiṣyāvo balaiḥ sārdhaṁ gajairashvai rathairapi ||3-113-5 O great king! We are now ready for conquering all the directions. We shall make all efforts for the same along with our army, elephants, horses as well as chariots. saṁbhārā yajṣasiddhyarthamānetavyā nṛpottama | O the best among kings! Let us bring all the materials for accomplishing the sacrifice. tatheti sa mahābāho brahmadatto'bravīttadā ||3-113-6 vaiśampāyana continued: O the one with great arms! (O janamejaya), Then king brahmadatta said: Let it be so. janārdanastu viprendro dṛṣṭvā sāhasatatparau | ashakyamiti manvāno vayasyaṁ haṁsamabravīt ||3-113-7 The best among brahmins, janārdana, understanding that they were interested in doing the rash deed which was impossible, told his friend haṁsa: śṛṇu haṁsa vacho mahyaṁ śrutvā nishchitya vīryavān | āyuṣmānsāhasaṁ kartumudyato'si nṛpottama ||3-113-8 O haṁsa! O valiant! Hear my words. Decide after hearing my words. O the one with long life! O the best among kings! You are attempting to do a rash act. sthite bhīṣme jarāsaṁdhe bāhlike ca nṛpottame | kiṁ ca vīreṣu sarveṣu yādaveṣu nṛpottama ||3-113-9 O the best among kings! The best among the kings, bhīṣma, jarāsaṁdha and bāhlika as well as all the valiant yādava-s are alive now. bhīṣmo hi balavānvṛddhaḥ satyasandho jitendriyaḥ | bhīśma is powerful, seasoned, truthful who has conquered his senses. triḥsaptakṛtvaḥ pṛthivīṁ yo jigāya bhṛgūttamaḥ ||3-113-10 taṁ yuddhe jitavānbhīṣmaḥ sarvakṣatrasya paśyataḥ | The best among the bhṛgu-s (paraśurāma) conquered the earth three times seven (twenty-one) times. bhīṣma conquered him in battle as all the kṣatriya-s were watching. jarāsaṁdhasya yadvīryaṁ tadbhavānvetti saṁyuge ||3-113-11 You are aware about the valiance of jarāsaṁdha in the battle. vṛṣṇivīrāstu te sarve kṛtāstrā yuddhadurmadāḥ | tatra kṛṣḥṇo hṛṣīkeśo jitaśatruḥ kṛtī sadā ||3-113-12 All the valiant vṛṣṇi-s are expert in archery and are proud in the battle. Among them is kṛṣṇa, the lord of senses, the conqueror of enemies, always the accomplished one. jarāsandhena sahitaḥ sadā yuddhe jitaśramaḥ | pramukhe tasya na sthātuṁ shakto jīvannṛpottamaḥ ||3-113-13 kṛṣṇa always has won the battle with jarāsaṁdha with his efforts. The best among the kings will not be able to stand and live in front of kṛṣṇa. balabhadrastathā mattaḥ kruddho yadi bhavedbalī | lokānimānsamāhartuṁ śaknotīti matirmama ||3-113-14 My intellect (mind) says that, if the powerful balabhadra, who is always excited, becomes angry, he will be able to conquer all the worlds. tathā ca sātyakirvīraḥ shakto jetuṁ raṇe ripūn | tathānye yādavāḥ sarve kṛṣṇamāśritya daṁśitaḥ ||3-113-15 In the same way, the valiant sātyaki will conquer the enemies in the battle. All the other valiant yādava-s who depend on kṛṣṇa are ready for the battle. asmābhiścha kṛtaḥ pūrvaṁ virodho yatibhiḥ saha | durvāsā yatibhiḥ sārdhaṁ gato draṣṭuṁ sa keshavam ||3-113-16 Before this we have acted against the sages who have controlled their senses and abandoned the material world. Sage durvāsa, along with sages has gone to see keshava (kṛṣṇa). iti śrutaṁ nṛpaśreṣṭha brāhmanādbhoktumāgatāt | tathā sati yathā siddhyettathā chintyaṁ ca mantribhiḥ ||3-113-17 O the best among kings! I have heard thus from brahmins who came to have food. If it is so, then this should be discussed with your ministers. tataḥ paścādvidhāsyāmo rājasūyaṁ mahākratuṁ | After the discussion, you may perform the great sacrifice, the royal sacrifice. haṁsa uvāca ko nāma bhīṣmo mandātmā vṛddho hīnabalaḥ sadā ||3-113-18 haṁsa said: Who is the one named bhīṣma, having a retarded soul, an old man, who is always weak? āvayoḥ purataḥ sthātuṁ śaktaḥ sa kila vṛddhakaḥ | yādavā iti citraṁ naḥ śaktāḥ sthātuṁ raṇe dvija ||3-113-19 Will that old man be capable of standing in front of (opposing) us? O brahmin (janārdana)! It is strange (impossible) that the yādava-s will be able to oppose us in the battle. kashcha kṛṣṇaḥ puraḥ sthātuṁ baladevashcha mattakaḥ | śaineyaścāpi viprendra sthātuṁ na iti cintaya ||3-113-20 Who is kṛṣṇa to stand in front of (oppose) us? Who is the intoxicated baladeva(rāma) to oppose us? O the indra of brahmins (janārdana)! Consider that even the son of shini (sātyaki) will not be able to oppose us. jarāsaṁdhastu dharmātmā bandhureva sadā mama | gaccha vipra yaduśreṣṭhaṁ brūhi madvacanāttvaran ||3-113-21 jarāsaṁdha, the king with the soul of dharma, is always my friend. O Brahmin (janārdana)! Go and tell the best of the race of yādava-s (kṛṣṇa) my words immediately: dīyatāṁ karasarvasvaṁ yajṣārthaṁ sundaraṁ bahu | lavaṇāni bahūnyadya gṛhya keshava mā ciram ||3-113-22 "You shall pay many beautiful tributes for the (royal) sacrifice. You shall also bring lot of salt. O keshava (kṛṣṇa), do not delay. āgaccha tvaritaṁ kṛṣṇa na te kāryaṁ vilambanam | iti brūhi yaduśreṣṭhaṁ yāhi tvaritavikramaḥ ||3-113-23 kṛṣṇa! You shall quickly come over. Do not delay your visit." You, go quickly and say this to the best among the yādava-s (kṛṣṇa) na brūyāśchottaraṁ vipra śapeyaṁ tvāṁ priyo'si me | mitrabhāvādidaṁ brūhi paśyāmi tvāṁ punaḥ punaḥ ||3-113-24 Do not say anything in reply to me , O Brahmin! Otherwise I may curse you. You are my friend. Due to our friendship you shall talk like this. I am looking at you again and again for this. iti saṣchodito vipro nottaraṁ pratyabhāṣata | mitrabhāvāttathā rājansnehāccha janamejaya ||3-113-25 (vaiśampāyana continued) O King! O janamejaya! The Brahmin janārdana who was thus prompted by haṁsa did not answer him due to his friendship and affection. janārdanastu dharmātmā nityaṁ gantuṁ samudyataḥ | adya śvo vā parashvo vā gachcāmīti yateta saḥ ||3-113-26 janārdana whose soul was fixed in dharma always, began preparations for going to meet kṛśṇa. He started his preparations thinking that he will go today, tomorrow or day after. devaṁ draṣṭuṁ jagadyoniṁ śaṅkhacakragadādharam | eka eva ca dharmātmā hayamāruhya satvaram ||3-113-27 janārdana, whose soul was fixed in dharma, all by himself, mounted a fast moving horse, to see the lord, the source of the universe, the lord who holds the conch, cakra and the mace. prātareva jagāmāśu draṣṭuṁ dvāravatīṁ dvijaḥ | hariṁ kṛṣṇaṁ hṛṣīkeśaṁ manasā saṁsmarandvijaḥ ||3-113-28 The twice born (Brahmin), janārdana, got up early in the morning to see the city of doors (dvāravati).
