vaiśampāyana uvāca
tataḥ prāyāddhariṁ viṣṇuṁ brāhmaṇo brahmavittamaḥ |
hayenaikena rājendra tvaritaṁ sa yayau nṛpa ||3-114-1
Translation
vaiśampāyana said:
O indra among kings! (janamejaya!) Then the brahmin, janāradana, best among those who are knowledgeable about brahma, started his journey, thinking about hari, viṣṇu (kṛṣṇa), O king, mounted on a fast moving horse.
yathā nidāghasamaye sūryāṁśuparipīḍitaḥ |
pāntho yāti jalaṁ dṛṣṭvā tvaritaṁ tatpipāsayā ||3-114-2
Like a traveler, tormented by the hot rays of sun in the summer, who moves fast prompted by thirst on seeing water, he proceeded quickly.
dhāvatyeva tathā vipro hariṁ draṣṭuṁ janārdanaḥ |
gacchansa cintayāmāsa chodayanhayamuttamam ||3-114-3
The brahmin janārdana moved fast, as if he was running, to see hari (viśṇu, kṛṣṇa). As he was riding fast mounted on the best among horses, he thought as follows:
haṁsa eva priyo mahyaṁ kuryātpriyahitaṁ mama |
tathā hi preṣitastena hariṁ paśyāmyahaṁ prabhum ||3-114-4
haṁsa is dearest to me. He will do what is most liked by me. That is how, myself, a messenger sent by him, am able to see the lord viṣṇu (kṛṣṇa).
ahameva sadā dhanyo matto hyabhyadhiko na hi |
yato drakṣyāmyahaṁ viṣṇuṁ vasantaṁ dvārakāpure ||3-114-5
Indeed I am the most blessed always. There is none who is more blessed than me. I will be able to see viśṇu who is residing in the city of doors (dvāraka).
sā hi me jananī dhanyā hariṁ dṛṣṭvā punargatam |
kṛtārthaṁ sarvadā devī drakṣatyeṣā manasvinī ||3-114-6
My mother is also blessed, since, she having a kind mind, will see me, who has come back, after seeing hari (viṣṇu, kṛṣṇa) accomplishing what is to be done.
mukhamunnidrahemābjakiṣjalkasadṛśaprabham |
drakṣyāmi devadevasya cakriṇaḥ śārṅgadhanvanaḥ ||3-114-7
I shall see the face of the Lord of gods, who holds the cakra and the bow śārṅga, which is splendorous and beautiful as the fully blossomed lotus flower.
vapurdrakṣyāmyahaṁ viṣṇornīlotpaladalacchaviḥ |
śāṅkhacakragadāśārṅgavanamālāvibhūṣitam ||3-114-8
I shall see the body of viṣṇu having the splendor of the petals of the blue lotus flower, which is decorated by the conch, cakra, mace, the bow śārṅga and the garland of wild flowers.
netre te devadevsya padmakiṣjalkasaprabhe |
paśyāmyahamadīnātmā naṣṭaduḥkho'smi nirvṛtaḥ ||3-114-9
I, having a distressed soul, shall see the eyes of the Lord of gods, splendorous as the petals of the lotus flower. Then my sorrow will vanish and I shall achieve the ultimate satisfaction.
api drakṣyati yogātmā saumyenaiva svacakṣuṣā |
api vā matpriyaṁ brūyātsvasti cheti ca vā vadet ||3-114-10
Will the lord with his soul yoked with yoga not look at me gently with his own eyes? Will He not say what I like? Will He not wish good to me?
drakṣyāmi cakriṇo varṣma tatastrailokyasannibham |
pādābjaṁ cakriṇo draṣṭuṁ tvaratyeva ca me manaḥ ||3-114-11
I shall see the body of the lord who holds cakra, splendorous as the three worlds. My mind is most anxious to see the feet of the lord who holds cakra, beautiful and auspicious as the lotus flower.
vakṣaḥsthalaṁ sadā viṣṇoḥ sphuradratnaprabhāyutam |
pashyanniva ca gachcāmi smaraṁścāniśamīśvaram ||3-114-12
I shall see the chest of viṣṇu, (kṛṣṇa) decorated with splendorous jewels. I am going (to dvāraka), always thinking about the lord.
pītakauśeyavasanaṁ lambahāravibhūṣitam |
īṣatsmitādharaṁ viṣṇuṁ paśyāmi ca punaḥ punaḥ ||3-114-13
I will see again and again lord viṣṇu (kṛṣṇa) wearing yellow silk clothes and decorated with a garland of pearls and a slight smile on His lips.
smaratashcha hare rūpaṁ romaharṣo'yamīdṛśaḥ |
gacchataścha puro bhāti śāṅkhacakragadāsimān ||3-114-14
I am excited like this with hairs standing up all over my body when I think about the form of viṣṇu (kṛṣṇa). As I go further, I see the form of viṣṇu, holding conch, cakra, mace and the sword in front of me.
yātīva ca puro bhāti mahyaṁ devo jagadguruḥ |
eṣo'yamiti me vaktuṁ jihvā prasphuratīva taṁ ||3-114-15
In front of me is the Lord of gods, the preceptor of the universe, lord viṣṇu (kṛṣṇa) as if He is going before me. My tongue is almost moving to say that He is here.
idaṁ duḥkhataraṁ manye karaṁ dehīti madvacaḥ |
idaṁ tatsāhasaṁ manye tadvacastasya bhūpateḥ ||3-114-16
I consider myself most distressed to say, "give tribute" to lord viṣṇu. Those words spoken by the king (haṁsa) are definitely reckless.
haṁsasya karado viṣṇustadājṣāparicārakaḥ |
tasya sarvam puro gatvā vaktāhaṁ kila nirdayaḥ ||3-114-17
viṣṇu (kṛṣṇa) shall pay tribute to haṁsa - I should speak all these in front of viṣṇu (kṛṣṇa) as a servant who obeys his (king haṁsa) order.
mūḍhānāmagraṇīrasmi nirlajjashcha tathā vadan |
karaṁ dehi hare viṣṇo haṁsasya yadupuṅgava ||3-114-18
I am the foremost among the stupid and shameless to speak thus: "O hari! O viṣṇu (kṛṣṇa)! O the foremost among yādava-s! Pay tribute to haṁsa.
lavaṇāni bahūnyāśu dātavyāni karātmanā |
iti vaktuṁ na me yuktaṁ puratastasya śārṅgiṇaḥ ||3-114-19
You shall also offer lot of salt as tribute". It is not appropriate for me to speak thus in front of the lord who holds the bow, śārṅga.
tathāpi mitrabhāvāttu vaktavyaṁ ghoramīdṛśam |
kaṣṭo hyayaṁ mitrabhāvo manuṣyāṇāṁ kṛtātmanām ||3-114-20
Even then I have to say such terrible things due to my friendship (with haṁsa and ḍimbhaka). Such friendship is highly unfortunate for those men having a satisfied mind.
atha vā sarvavidviṣṇuḥ sarvasya hṛdi saṁsthitam |
jānātyeva sadā bhāvaṁ prāṇināṁ shobhane rataḥ ||3-114-21
Otherwise, viṣṇu (kṛṣṇa) who knows all, who is installed in the hearts (minds) of all, who is interested in the well being of all beings always, will know these feelings always.
tathā sati na me doṣo mitrabhāvo yato hyayam |
sarvathā rakṣatāṁ viṣṇurghoraṁ vaktuṁ yatasya me ||3-114-22
In that case there is no harm for me since I have friendship (with haṁsa and ḍimbhaka ). Let viṣṇu (kṛṣṇa) protect me always, who intends to say terrible things.
drakṣyāmyahaṁ jagannāthaṁ nīlakuṣchitamūrdhajam |
kambugrīvadharaṁ viṣṇuṁ srīvatsāccāditorasam ||3-114-23
I will see the lord of the universe, viṣṇu (kṛṣṇa) who is having dark blue hair, having an auspicious neck decorated with bracelets, whose chest sparkles with the auspicious mark of srīvatsa.
sphuratpadmamahābāhuṁ ratnachcāyāvirājitam |
drakṣyāmi keśavaṁ viṣṇuṁ cakriṇaṁ yādaveśvaram ||3-114-24
I will see keshava, viṣṇu whose great arms are decorated with lotus flowers, who is decorated with jewels. The lord who holds cakra, the lord of the yādavas.
acintyavibhavaṁ devaṁ bhūtabhavyabhavatprabhuṁ |
ātmecchayā jagadrakṣaṁ drakṣyāmi jalaśāyinam ||3-114-25
I will see lord viṣṇu, who have many items which can not be described. I shall see the lord of the past, present and future, who protects the world by his own will, who lies in water (the milky ocean).
kṛtārthaḥ sarvathā cāhaṁ bhavāmi vigatajvaraḥ |
adya me saphalaṁ janma sākṣāddṛṣṭavato harim ||3-114-26
By all means I will become the one who has done what is to be done, the one whose sorrows have disappeared. Today my life has become fruitful, since I shall see hari (viṣṇu, kṛṣṇa) in person.
adya me saphalā yajṣāḥ sākṣātkṛtavato hariṁ |
netre me saphale viṣṇuṁ pashyatashcha jaganmayam ||3-114-27
Today my efforts are fruitful because I shall see hari (viṣṇu, kṛṣṇa) in person. My eyes have become fruitful by seeing the lord of the universe.
prītimānastu me viṣṇurvakturghorasya karmaṇaḥ |
unmiṣannetrayugmena drakṣyāmi sakṛdīśvaram ||3-114-28
May viṣṇu become pleased with me, even though I am doing terrible acts. I shall see the auspicious lord with both my eyes, keeping them wide open.
āmūlamasakṛdviṣṇuṁ paśyāmi ca punaḥ punaḥ |
pibāmi netrayugmena vapuḥ kṛṣṇasya kevalam ||3-114-29
I shall see auspicious viṣṇu from toe to head again and again. I shall simply drink the body of kṛṣṇa with both my eyes.
dhārayiṣyāmyahaṁ pāṁsuṁ tatpādaprabhavaṁ shivam |
tataḥ kṛtārthatāṁ yāsye svargamārgo hi tadrajaḥ ||3-114-30
I shall wear the auspicious dust from his feet and then become one who has accomplished what is to be done . That dust is considered as the path to heaven.
meghagambhīranirghoṣaṁ śroṣyāmi ca hareḥ svaram |
pādābjaṁ cakriṇo viṣṇoḥ paśyāmi ca jagatpateḥ ||3-114-31
I shall hear the voice of hari which is deep as the thunder of a cloud. I shall see the feet of the holder of cakra, viṣṇu (kṛṣṇa), the lord of the world, which is as beautiful as the lotus of creation.
paśyāmi ca harervaktraṁ pūrṇendusadṛśaprabham |
hareridaṁ jagadrūpaṁ paśyāmīva ca sarvataḥ ||3-114-32
I shall see the face of hari (viṣṇu, kṛṣṇa) splendorous like the full moon. I am seeing the universal form of hari (viṣṇu, kṛṣṇa) everywhere.
prasīdatu sadā viṣṇurayuktaṁ vaktumicchataḥ |
Let viṣṇu (kṛṣṇa) be pleased with me always, who wants to say inappropriate words.
ālolakuṇḍalayutaṁ harichandanacharchitam ||3-114-33
sphuratkeyūraratnārchirbāhudvayavirājitam |
savye dyotanmahāśaṅkhaṁ raśmijālavirājitam ||3-114-34
prodyadbhāskaravarṇabhaṁ cakrajvālāvirājitam |
projjvalatkaṅkaṇayutaṁ taptajambūnadāṅgadam ||3-114-35
pītakauśeyavasanaṁ vistīrṇoraskamachyutaṁ |
kadā drakṣyāmi deveśamidāṇīmatha vānyadā ||3-114-36
When shall I see the Lord of lords, the lord who does not have a fall, lord viṣṇu (kṛṣṇa), now or some other time, wearing the swinging ear rings, smeared with the auspicious sandalwood paste, along with two arms sparkling with bracelets and jewels, holding the great conch in his left hand, sparkling with the group of rays, holding the cakra which dazzles with the splendor of the rising sun, wearing the bangles and golden bracelets, wearing yellow silk clothes, having a wide and beautiful chest?
sarvathā kṛtakṛtyo'haṁ yadvapurdraṣṭumudyataḥ |
namo mahyaṁ namo mahyaṁ yato draṣṭumahaṁ harim ||3-114-37
udyato'smi jagannāthaṁ balabhadrakṛtāspadam |
By all means, I am the one who has done what is to be done, since I am making efforts to see the lord's auspicious body. I bow to me, I bow to me. I am ready to see the lord hari (viṣṇu, kṛṣṇa), the lord of the universe (kṛṣṇa) along with balabhadra(rāma).
drakṣyāmyavaśyamadyaiva jiṣṇuṁ viṣṇuṁ jagadgurum ||3-114-38
Today, I shall see definitely, jiṣṇu, viṣṇu, the preceptor of the universe (kṛṣṇa).
śrīkaustubhodbhavaruciṁ sphuritoruvakṣaḥ
pītāmabaraṁ makarakuṇḍalapaṅkajākṣam |
kṛṣṇaṁ kirīṭavaracakragadordhvahastaṁ
tejomayaṁ mama harervapurastu bhūtyai ||3-114-39
Let the auspicious, splendorous body of hari (viṣṇu, kṛṣṇa), having a wide chest sparkling with the splendor of the auspicious kaustubha, wearing yellow clothes, with the ear rings shaped like crocodiles and having beautiful eyes as the lotus of creation, the body of kṛṣṇa, wearing the crown, with the hands holding cakra and the mace provide prosperity to me.
vedodadhau viśadaśāstramahāhiyoge
niṣṇātaśuddhamatimandaramathyamāne |
udyotamānamamarairaniśaṁ niṣevyaṁ
nārāyaṇākhyamamṛtaṁ prapibāmi vādya ||3-114-40
When the ocean of veda is churned by the mandara mountain of the pure intellect, bound by the serpent of the great religious treatises (śāstra-s) the nectar of narāyaṇa rose up which was drunk by the immortals. Today I shall drink that nectar.
dhyeyaṁ mumukṣubhirameyamanādyanantaṁ
sthūlaṁ susūkṣmataramekamanekamādyam |
jyotistrilokajanakaṁ tridaśaikavandya-
makṣṇormamāstu satatam hṛdaye'chyutākhya ||3-114-41
The great splendor meditated by those seeking liberation, that can not be measured, that do not have neither the beginning nor the end, that which is huge as well as minute, that which is the only one as well as many, that which was evolved first - Let that splendor named as the lord who does not have a fall, be visible to my eyes and established in my heart.
cintayanniti viprendro yayau dvāravatīṁ purīm |
matvā kṛtārthamātmanāṁ vāhayanhayamuttamam ||3-114-42
Thinking thus, the indra of brahmins (janārdana) went to the city of doors (dvāraka). Realising that he has become the one who has accomplished what is to be done, he rode on the best among horses.
iti śrīmahābhārate khileṣu harivaṁśe bhaviṣyaparvaṇi haṁsaḍimbhakopākhyāne viprasya dvāravatīgamane caturdaśādhikaśatatamo'dhyāyaḥ
This is the one hundred and fourteenth chapter of bhaviṣyaparva, harivaṁśa, khila of mahābhārata, in the episode of haṁsa and ḍimbhaka, the messenger janārdana goes to dvāraka
