Parva 3 Chapter 118: sātyakivākyam - sātyaki conveys kṛṣṇa's message

vaiśampāyana uvāca ityuktavati haṁse ca dharmātmātha janārdanaḥ | uvāca prahasanvīraḥ stuvannārāyaṇaṁ sadā ||3-118-1

Translation

vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) When haṁsa said so, the valiant janārdana, having the soul of dharma who always praises nārāyaṇa (viṣṇu, kṛṣṇa) said smilingly: adrākṣamadrākṣamahaṁ janārdanaṁ hastasthaśaṅkhaṁ varacakradhāriṇam | ātaptajāmbūnadabhūṣitāṅgadaṁ sphuratprabhādyotitaratnadhāriṇam ||3-118-2 (janārdana said) I saw janārdana (kṛṣṇa) again and again, with the conch in his hands and holding the best cakra, decorated by bracelets of pure gold and wearing splendorous sparkling jewels. adrākṣamenaṁ yadubhiḥ purātanaiḥ samsevyamānaṁ munivṛndamukhyaiḥ | saṁstuyamānaṁ prabhubhiḥ samāgadhaiḥ smitapravālādharapallavāruṇam ||3-118-3 I saw the ancient lord who is served by prominent sages along with those of the race of yadu (yādava-s), who is praised by the bards. The lord had smiling red youthful lips, beautiful as corals. adrākṣamenaṁ kavibhiḥ purātanai- rvivicya vedyaṁ vidhivatsahāmaraiḥ | praphullanīlotpalaśobhitaṁ śriyā vinidrahemābjavirājitodaram ||3-118-4 I saw the lord who is distinguished and known by ancient poets along with the immortals in the prescribed manner, the lord having the splendor of a fully blossomed blue lotus of prosperity, the lord having the eternal golden lotus of creation sprouting from his belly. bhūyo'hamadrākṣamajaṁ jagadguruṁ pramodayantaṁ vacanena yādavān | nirūpayantaṁ vidhivanmunīśvaraiḥ pravṛttavedārthavidhiṁ purātanaiḥ ||3-118-5 Again I saw the lord who is unborn, the preceptor of the universe, who makes the yādava-s happy with his words, who explains the meaning of vedas in the prescribed manner along with the ancient sages. adrākṣamadrākṣamahaṁ punaḥ punaḥ samastalokaikahitaiṣiṇaṁ hariṁ | vasantamasmiṣjagato hitāya jaganmayaṁ tānparibhūya śatrūn ||3-118-6 Again and again I saw the lord hari who is interested in the welfare of all the worlds, the one who resides for the welfare of the universe, providing the same by conquering the enemies (of the welfare of universe). bhūyo'pyapaśyaṁ saha yādaveśvarai- rvikrīḍyamānaṁ ca vihārakāle | ramantamīḍyam ramayantamīśvarā- nyadūttamānyādavamukhyamīśvaram ||3-118-7 Again I saw the lord who was playing along with the prominent yādava-s at the time of leisure. I saw the lord who was enjoying. I saw the best among yādava-s (kṛṣṇa) who was entertaining others. bhūyo'pyapaśyaṁ sarasīruhekṣaṇaṁ sametayā bhīṣmatanūjayā harim | vasantamambhonidhiśāyinaṁ vibhuṁ bhaktapriyaṁ bhaktajanāspadaṁ shivam ||3-118-8 Again I saw the lord hari (viṣṇu, kṛṣṇa) having the eyes as beautiful as the lotus of creation providing prosperity to the devotees, along with the daughter of king bhīṣmka (rugmiṇi). I saw the auspicious lord viṣṇu (kṛṣṇa), lying in the (milk) ocean, to whom devotees are dear, on whom the devotees depend. adrākṣadrākṣamahaṁ sunirvṛtaḥ pibanpibaṁstasya vapuḥ purātanam | netreṇa mīladvivareṇa kevalaṁ dhanyo'hamasmīti tadā vyacintayam ||3-118-9 I again and again saw the lord. I drank his ancient body with my wide open eyes again and again with utmost satisfaction. At that time, I thought that I am the most blessed. adrākṣamambhojayugaṁ dadhānaṁ prabhuṁ vibhuṁ bhūtamayaṁ vibhāvanam | ādyaṁ kakudmānamuruṁ vibhāvasuṁ saṁsmṛtya saṁśṛtaya tameva nirvṛtaḥ ||3-118-10 I saw the lord, the lord manifesting everywhere, the lord of beings, the lord interested in the welfare of all beings, lord viṣṇu (kṛṣṇa) holding two lotus flowers. Remembering and depending on lord viṣṇu (kṛṣṇa), the great lord, the lord who sparkles, I am utmost satisfied. adrākṣaṁ jagatāmīśaṁ vakṣorājitakaustubham | vījyamānaṁ hariṁ kṛṣṇaṁ cāmarāṇāṁ śataiḥ sadā ||3-118-11 I saw the lord of the universe, the lord viṣṇu, wearing the jewel kaustubha on his chest. I saw lord hari, kṛṣṇa always being fanned by hundreds of chowries. yuvām vidveṣayuktena chetasā yādaveśvaram | smarantam sarvadā viṣṇuṁ kva caivaṁ kva ca vetti kaḥ ||3-118-12 The lord of yādava-s (kṛṣṇa), remembers both of you with hatred in his mind. Where and who will know viṣṇu in this way? kva ca drakṣyāmi tau mandau kṛto vā matpurogatau | dhyāyantamitthaṁ deveśaṁ kare śatruvahaṁ sadā ||3-118-13 I saw the lord of gods, holding the conch in his hands, who was thinking: Where can I see those two with slow intellect ? When will they come in front of me? hasantamenamadrākṣaṁ karadaṁ hāsyatatparam | vadantaṁ nārade vācam durvāsasi yatīśvare ||3-118-14 I saw the lord (kṛṣṇa, viṣṇu) who was laughing. I saw the lord (kṛṣṇa, viṣṇu) who can pay tributes. I saw the lord (kṛṣṇa, viṣṇu) interested in humor, who was speaking with nārada and sage durvāsa, the lord of those who have restrained their passions and abandoned the material world. brahmasūtrapadāṁ vāṇīṁ dāpayantaṁ munīśvaram | dṛṣṭāhaṁ taṁ hariṁ devaṁ punaḥ punaracintayam ||3-118-15 I saw the lord in conversation with the lord of sages who was pronouncing the meaning of the words of vedas. Seeing lord hari (viṣṇu, kRīṣṇa) I thought again and again that, asādhyamidamārabdhaṁ tābhyāmiti nṛpottama | nārabdhavyamidam kāryamitaḥ prabhṛti bhūmipa ||3-118-16 O the best among the kings (O haṁsa)! You have initiated an impossible task. O the lord of earth! You should not proceed further with this matter. nivṛttā sā kathā haṁsācintayadgrahaṇaṁ tava | tadvṛttāmakhilaṁ sarvaṁ vadishyati hi sātyakiḥ | O haṁsa! The episode of your collection of tribute has finished. All the incidents will be explained in detail by sātyaki. etadvacanamākarṇya haṁsaḥ kruddho'bravīdvacaḥ ||3-118-17 Hearing these words (spoken by janārdana), haṁsa became angry and spoke the following words. haṁsa uvāca are brāhmaṇadāyāda kā nāma tava vāgiyam | āvayoḥ purato vaktuṁ trailokyam jetumicchatoḥ ||3-118-18 haṁsa said: You the son of Brahmin! What are you talking? How dare you speak these words in front of us who are trying to conquer the three worlds? māyayā tvāṁ bhrāmayati kṛṣṇo līlāvidhānavit | taṁ dṛṣṭvā bhrama evaiṣa tava saṣjāyate mahān ||3-118-19 kṛṣṇa, expert in organizing a play, is confusing you with illusion. After seeing kṛṣṇa, you have become highly confused. śaṅkhacakragadāśārṅgavanamālāvibhūṣitam | vṛṣṇivīraṁ samāveśya samucchritayaśodharam ||3-118-20 After seeing kṛṣṇa who holds the conch, cakra, mace and the bow śārṅga and decorated with the garland of wild flowers, the valiant among the vṛṣṇi-s, the one having a high fame, sūtamāgadhasaṁstāvaprakaṭadvārabāhukam | atyadbhutayaśorāśiṁ vikramāllokamaṇḍanam ||3-118-21 the one who was praised by the bards and the poets and led the passage from the entrance, the one who has the most wonderful fame, the one who is respected by the world due to his valiance, caturbhujaṁ balākrāntaṁ vṛṣṇiyādavasaṁmatam | aho'dya bhrama evaiṣa darśanāttasya cakriṇaḥ ||3-118-22 the one having four highly powerful arms, the one who is dear to those of the yādava and vṛṣṇi races, alas!, after seeing the one who holds a cakra, now you are only confused. idānīṁ ca mahārāja bhrāmayatyeva durmatiḥ | tvāmeva vipra mandātmannindrajālikatā hi yā ||3-118-23 O great lord! That one with a wicked intellect is confusing you even now, O Brahmin! O the one with a slow intellect, with his act of magic. cāpalyamidamevaitattava vipra bhramodbhavam aho hi khalu sādṛśyaṁ vaktavyaṁ bhavatā mama ||3-118-24 O Brahmin! Your confusion is definitely childish. Alas! You should have talked about our similarity. ahameva tvayā vipra marshaye proditaṁ vacaḥ | sakhibhāvāddvijaśreṣṭha anyathā kaḥ sahedidam ||3-118-25 O Brahmin! I shall excuse the words spoken by you, O the best among the twice born, due to our friendship. Otherwise who will tolerate words like these? gaccha mandamate vipra yatheṣṭaṁ sāṁprataṁ tava | dvija gaccha yatheṣṭaṁ tvaṁ pṛthivīṁ pṛthivī tava ||3-118-26 O the one with slow intellect! O brahmin! O twice born! You may go as you like. The entire earth is open to you. You may go wherever you like on this earth. jitvā gopāladāyādaṁ hatvā yādavakānbahūn | eṣa naḥ prathamaḥ kalpo jeṣyāma iti yādavān ||3-118-27 After conquering the son of the cowherd and killing many yādava-s, I shall conquer yādavas. This my foremost resolution. gaccha gaccheti vipra tvaṁ dhṛṣṭaṁ paruṣavādinam | śatrupakṣastutiparaṁ saha yuktvā sadā mayā ||3-118-28 Brahmin! Go away! Go away! You are audacious and you speak roughly. I should abandon those who always praise the enemy's side. na me vipravadhaḥ kāryaḥ kaṣṭādapi hi sarvataḥ | ityuktvā brāhmaṇaṁ bhūyo haṁsaḥ sātyakimabravīt ||3-118-29 Even if I am distressed all over, I shall never kill a brahmin. (vaiśampāyana continued: O janamejaya!) Speaking thus to the brahmin, haṁsa again spoke to sātyaki: bho bho yādavadāyāda kimarthaṁ prāptavāniha | kimabravīnnandasutaḥ kiṁ vāsau me'diśatkaram ||3-118-30 O the son of yādava! For what purpose have you come here? What did the son of nanda (kṛṣṇa) say? Did he pay tribute to me? sātyakiruvāca idam satyaṁ vacho haṁsa śaṅkhacakragadābhṛtaḥ | sātyaki said: O haṁsa! These are the true words of the one who holds the conch, cakra and the mace: śanairniśitadhārāgraiḥ śārṅgamuktaiḥ śilāśitaiḥ ||3-118-31 dāsyāmi karasarvasvamasinā nishitena te | I shall pay all the tributes to you with the arrows having tips sharpened by the grind stone and released from the bow śārṅga and with sharp swords. śiraśchetsyāmi te haṁsa karadānasya saṅgraham ||3-118-32 dhārṣṭyaṁ hi tava mandātmankimato'pi nṛpādhama | "O haṁsa! I shall cut off your head. O the one with slow intellect! It is definitely your audacity to say that I shall offer tribute to you. O vile king! What is next?" devadevājjagannāthātkaramicchati yo nṛpaḥ ||3-118-33 tasyaiṣa karasaṅkṣepo jihvācchedo narādhama | O vile king! The hand as well as tongue of the king asking tribute from the Lord of gods, the lord of the universe, shall be cut off. tasya śārṅgaravaṁ śrutvā śaṅkhasya ca hareḥ punaḥ ||3-118-34 ko nāma jīvitam kāṅkṣettiṣṭhedānīṁ tvamadya vai | After hearing the sound of the twang of the bow śārṅga and the conch of hari (kṛṣṇa, viṣṇu) who will stand up to him, who want to live again? (If you think you are powerful) you may. girīśavaradarpeṇa ko brūyādīdṛśaṁ vacaḥ ||3-118-35 You are saying words like this due to the pride because of the boons given by the lord of the mountain (shiva) sahāyā vayamevaite balabhadrapurogamāḥ | prathamo balabhadro'sau dvitīyo'haṁ ca sātyakiḥ ||3-118-36 Also we, lead by balabhadra(rāma) , are there for helping kṛṣṇa. The first is balabhadra (rāma), the second is me, sātyaki, kṛtavarmā tṛtīyastu caturtho niśaṭho balī | paṣchamo'tha ca babhrustu ṣaṣṭaśchaivotkalaḥ smṛtaḥ ||3-118-37 the third is kṛtavarma, the fourth is the powerful niśaṭha, the fifth is babhru, the sixth is the famous utkala, saptamastāraṇo dhīmānastraśastraviśāradaḥ aṣṭamastvatha sāraṅgo navamo vipṛthustathā ||3-118-38 the seventh is tāraṇa, the one with intellect and the expert in archery, the eighth is sāraṅga and the ninth is vipṛthu, daśamashchoddhavo dhīmānvayamete balānvitāḥ | the tenth is uddhava, the one with intellect. All of us are powerful. ta ete purato goptuḥ śaṅkhacakragadabhṛtaḥ ||3-118-39 devadevasya yuddheṣu tiṣṭhantyeva divāniśam | We shall stand day and night in front of the lord, the one who holds the conch, cakra and mace, the lord of gods (kṛṣṇa, viṣṇu), in the battle field. yau hi vīrau sutau tasya nāsatyasadṛśau bale ||3-118-40 Those two valiant sons of vasudeva are equal to nāsatya-s (the twin ashvini deva-s) in power. tāveva vāṁ kṣamau yuddhe hantuṁ balamadānvitau | yo girīśo girā devo varaṁ dattvā sa tiṣṭhati ||3-118-41 They alone are sufficient to kill you who are proud with power, in battle while the lord of the mountain, shiva, who gave you the boon by words, is standing aside. yuvāṁ hi kimbalau yuddhe tiṣṭhataḥ saśaraṁ dhanuḥ | gṛhītvā śatrubhiḥ sārdhaṁ yuddhaṁ kartuṁ samudyatau ||3-118-42 With what power are you standing in the battle field, holding the bow and arrows, trying to engage your enemies in the battle? īdṛśeṣvatha bhṛtyeṣu yuddhaṁ kurvatsu śatrubhiḥ | trailokyaṁ rakṣatastasmātkaramicchanvrajeta kaḥ ||3-118-43 As servants like us fight with the enemies in the battle field, who can demand tribute from the lord who protects the three worlds? haniṣyatyeva vāṁ yuddhe trailokyaṁ yo hi rakṣati| śareṇa niśitenājau śārṅgamuktena kevalam ||3-118-44 The lord who protects the three worlds will kill you in the battle, simply with the sharp arrows released from the bow śārṅga. kva na saṅgrāma ityevaṁ punarāha jagatpatiḥ | puṣkare punyade nityamuta govardhane girau ||3-118-45 The lord of the universe asked again: Where is the location of our battle - at the holy place of puṣkara or the eternal mountain of govardhana? mathurāyāṁ prayāge vā darshayanto balāni me | Will you show your army (power) at mathura or prayāga? śaṅkhacakradhare deve jagatpālanatatpare ||3-118-46 rājasūyaṁ mahāyajṣaṁ kartumicchati kaḥ svayam | Who want to perform the great royal sacrifice (rājasūya) while the lord holding the conch and cakra is interested in the welfare of the world? vadanvā svastimānmartyastvāṁ vinā ko vrajetsukham ||3-118-47 Or else is there some one who can go home comfortably after speaking thus? idamicchasi chenmūḍha hāsyatāṁ yāsi bhūtale | ityuktvā sātyakirvīro hasanniva bhuvi sthitaḥ ||3-118-48 O fool! If you wish to do this, you will become a laughing stock on the face of earth.
