Parva 3 Chapter 123: vicakravadhaḥ - vicakra killed

vaiśampāyana said: During this time, O king, (janamejaya), one to one battle took place. The lord holding the bow śārṅga and mace in his hands (kṛṣṇa), fought with vicakra. balabhadro'tha haṁsena ḍimbhakena ca sātyakiḥ | vasudevograsenābhyāṁ hiḍimbaḥ puruṣādakaḥ ||3-123-2 balabhadra(rāma) fought with haṁsa and sātyaki fought with ḍimbhaka. hiḍimba, the man eater fought with vasudeva and ugrasena. ṣeśāścha Sheshai rājendra cakruryuddhamadīnagāḥ | O the indra of kings! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) The remaining ones fought with the remaining ones without sorrow. vāsudevastrisaptatyā daityaṁ vakṣasyatāḍayat ||3-123-3 śarairniśitadhārāgrairvismayaṁ darśayanraṇe | vāsudeva (kṛṣṇa) shot seventy three arrows having sharp tips at the chest of of the son of diti (vicakra) and showed a wonderful feat in the battle. dānavo devadeveśaṁ dṛḍhena nishitena ca ||3-123-4 śareṇākarṇamākṛṣya dhanuḥpravaramīśvaram | jaghāna stanamadhye ca pashyatastu śacīpate ||3-123-5 The son of danu (vicakra) pulled sharp arrows upto his ear and shot at the middle of the breast of the lord, the lord of gods, who is an expert archer, as the husband of śacī (indra) was watching. tena viddho'tha bhagavānvakṣodeśe janārdanaḥ | avamacchoṇitaṁ viṣṇurādikāle yathā prajāḥ ||3-123-6 The lord janārdana, viṣṇu, who was shot forcefully at the chest by vicakra, vomited blood, in the same way he had produced the subjects at the beginning of creation. tataḥ kruddho hṛṣīkeśaḥ kṣurapreṇāhanaddhvajam | aśvāṁścha caturo hatvā sārathiṁ ca śaraistribhiḥ ||3-123-7 Then the lord of senses ( viṣṇu, kṛṣṇa) became angry and shot off his flag with a kṣurapra. The lord killed all the four horses and the charioteer with three arrows. tato dadhmau mahāśaṅkhaṁ yathā tārāmaye raṇe | Then the lord blew his great conch like he blew it during the battle of tārāmaya (battle between gods and demons regarding bṛhaspati's wife, tārā) long ago. rathādutplutya sahasā dānavaḥ krodhamūrcchitaḥ ||3-123-8 gadāṁ gṛhya mahāghorāṁ duḥsahāṁ vīryaśālinīṁ | tayā jaghāna daityendraḥ kirīṭe keshavasya ha ||3-123-9 lalāṭe ca punarviṣṇuṁ siṁhanādaṁ vyanīnadat | Then, all of a sudden, the son of danu, with extreme anger, jumped out from his chariot. Taking the highly terrible, highly valiant mace which is difficult to bear in the battle, the indra of the sons of diti, struck at the crown of keshava (kṛṣṇa), as well as again on the forehead of viṣṇu (kṛṣṇa) and then roared aloud like a lion. tataḥ śilāṁ ca mahatīṁ pragṛhya danujaḥ kila ||3-123-10 bhrāmayitvā daśaguṇaṁ prāharatkeśavorasi | Then the son of danu (vicakra) took up a great rock. Whirling the rock hundred times, he released it at the chest of keshava (kṛṣṇa). tāmāpatantīṁ saṁprekṣya hastenādāya keśavaḥ ||3-123-11 jaghāna ca tathā daityaṁ sa papātārditaḥ kṣitau | gatāsuriva samjajṣe shvasanniva papāta ha ||3-123-12 Seeing it falling down, keshava (kṛṣṇa) caught it with his hand and struck the son of diti (vicakra) with the same. Then vicakra was highly distressed and fell down on the face of earth. He fell down, sighing deeply as if his life forces left him. prāpya saṁjṣāṁ tato daityaḥ kroddhāddviguṇamābabhau | ādāya parighaṁ ghoramidamāha janārdanam ||3-123-13 Immediately, the son of diti (vicakra) regained his consciousness and became doubly angry. He took up a highly terrible iron club and told janārdana (kṛṣṇa). anena tava govinda darpajātaṁ nihanmyaham | vikramajṣastadā cāsi mama devāsure raṇe ||3-123-14 (vicakra said) O govinda! (kṛṣṇa) I shall destroy all your (valiance) with this club (parigha). You have already seen my valiance during the battle between the gods and demons ( battle of tārāmaya). tāveva vipulau bāhū sa evāsmi janārdana | tathāpi yudhyase vīra jṣātvā tvaṁ māmakaṁ balam ||3-123-15 O janārdana (kṛṣṇa, viṣṇu) I am the same one (who fought against the gods) and these are the same (powerful) arms. Even after knowing about my power, O valiant, are you fighting against me? vārayainaṁ mahābāho parighaṁ bāhuniḥsṛtam | O the one with great arms (kṛṣṇa)! Block this iron club which is released by my (powerful) arms. ityuktvā devadeveśaṁ śaṅkhacakragadādharam | cikṣepa daityo lokeśaṁ sarvalokasya paśyataḥ ||3-123-16 (vaiśampāyana continued! O janamejaya!) Saying this, the son of diti (vicakra) threw the club at the lord of gods, the one who holds the conch, cakra and the mace (viṣṇu, kṛṣṇa), the lord of the world, as those in all the worlds were watching. taṁ gṛhya bāhunā kṛṣṇo hato'sīti vadanhariḥ | khaṇḍaśaḥ kārayāmāsa khaḍgena nishitena ha ||3-123-17 kṛśṇa caught the club with his hand saying "you are dead" and cut it into pieces with a sharp sword. utpāṭya vṛkṣaṁ daityeśaḥ śataśākhaṁ mahāśikham | tena saṁpothayāmāsa viṣṭaraśravasaṁ vibhuṁ ||3-123-18 The lord of the sons of diti (vicakra) pulled out a giant tree having hundred branches and struck the lord having wide fame (kṛṣṇa, viṣṇu) with the same. cittvā taṁ cāpi khaḍgena tilaśaśca cakāra ha | kṛṣṇa cut the tree also with his sword and made it into pieces like the seeds of sesame. vikrīḍya suciraṁ viṣṇustena daityena mādhavaḥ ||3-123-19 hantumaicchattadā daityamādāya niśitaṁ śaram | āgneyāstreṇa saṁyojya jaghānainaṁ mahān hariḥ ||3-123-20 After playing with that son of diti (vicakra) for a long time, viṣṇu, mādhava (kṛṣṇa) then desired to kill the son of diti. Taking up a sharp arrow and joining it with the arrow of the fire god, the great hari (viṣṇu, kṛṣṇa) shot at vicakra. saṁdahya sa sharo daityaṁ sarvalokasya paśyataḥ | yathā pūrvaṁ jagāmāśu karaṁ bhagavataḥ punaḥ ||3-123-21 As all the beings of all the worlds were watching, that arrow burned the son of diti (vicakra) and returned to the lord's hand again as before. hataśiṣṭāstato daityāḥ palāyanto disho daśa | adyāpi na nivartante gacchanto vai mahodadhim ||3-123-22 The sons of diti who were left alive ran in all the ten directions and entered the great ocean.
