Parva 3 Chapter 126: hiḍimbena sākaṁ vasudevograsenayoryuddham - balabhadreṇa hiḍimbaparābhavaścha - vasudeva and ugrasena fight with hiḍimba, balarāma kills hiḍimba

vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) Even though, both vasudeva and ugrasena were old men, with all the members of their bodies affected by old age, hairs on their heads turned white, they were still enjoying fighting. jṣānavijṣānasaṁpannau rājamārgaviśāradau | yuyudhāte mahāraṅge rākṣasena durātmanā ||3-126-2 Both, well enriched with spiritual and worldly knowledge, experts in the dharma of kṣatriya-s (warfare), fought in the great battlefield with the rākṣasa, hiḍimba, having wicked soul. (See nīlakaṇṭha commentary) śarairanekasāhasrairardayāmāsatū raṇe | rākṣasendraṁ durātmānaṁ hiḍimbaṁ puruṣādakam ||3-126-3 They distressed the indra (king) of rākṣasa-s, hiḍimba, the man eater, with many thousands of arrows in the battle. hiḍimbo rākśasendrastu bhakṣayansarvato narān | atipravṛddho duṣṭātmā lambabāhurmahāhanuḥ ||3-126-4 The indra (king) of rākṣasa-s, hiḍimba, ate men all over (the battle field). The one with wicked soul had a well grown body, long arms and a great cheek. lambodaro virūpākṣaḥ piṅgakeśo vilocanaḥ | śyenanāso mahāraudra ūrdhvaromā mahābhujaḥ ||3-126-5 He had a huge belly, deformed and inauspicious eyes and yellow hair. His nose was crooked like the nose of a hawk. He was highly terrible with huge arms and all the hairs of his body were standing up. parvatākāravarṣmā ca dīrghadaṁṣṭraḥ śivānanaḥ | lambodaro dīrghadanto jagadgrāsaparastathā ||3-126-6 He had a huge body, like a mountain. He had long fangs and the face of a jackal. With a huge belly and long teeth, he appeared terrible as if he is capable of eating the entire world. uttuṅgāṁso mahorasko dīrghagrīvo gajopamaḥ | bhakṣayanmāṁsapiṭakaṁ pibaṣśoṇitasaṣchayam ||3-126-7 He had high shoulders, great chest and long neck. He appeared like an elephant. He ate pieces of flesh and drank lots of blood. gajānnāgaiḥ samāhatya hayairaśvānnṛpottama | rathānrathaiḥ samāhatya sādinaḥ sādibhistathā ||3-126-8 O the best among kings! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued): hiḍimba struck elephants with elephants, horses with horses, chariots with chariots and horsemen with horsemen. manuśyānsa puro dṛṣṭvā nāsyagrāsaṁ cakāra saḥ | kāṁśchiddhatvā mahārāja vṛṣṇipālānsamantataḥ ||3-126-9 bhakṣayamāsa sahasā hiḍimbaḥ puruṣādakaḥ | He sucked those men who were seen before him, straight into his nose. O great king! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued): hiḍimba, the man eater, all of a sudden, killed some of the vṛṣṇi-s, all around and ate them. yānpaśyanpurato rakṣastāṣjaghāna virūpadhṛk ||3-126-10 rākhṣasa, hiḍimbha, having a deformed look, killed those, whomsoever he saw before him. bhakṣayannaparānvṛṣṇīnyādavānrākṣaseśvaraḥ | cikṣepa sahasā kāṁśchiddhiḍimbaḥ puruṣādakaḥ ||3-126-11 hiḍimba, the man eater, the lord of rākṣasa-s, while eating vṛṣṇi-s and yādava-s, all of a sudden, threw some of them, far away. antakāle yathā kruddho rudraḥ prāṇabhṛto nṛpa | kṣaṇenaikena sarvāṁstānbhakṣayāmāsa rākṣasaḥ ||3-126-12 O king! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) Just like the angry rudra (shiva) destroys the beings at the time of the destruction, the rākṣasa (hiḍimba) ate all of them within a moment. kechidbhītā diśaḥ prāpurvṛṣṇayo vīryaśālinaḥ | kechittu bhakṣitāstena rakṣasā vṛṣṇipuṅgavāḥ ||3-126-13 Some of the valiant vṛṣṇi-s became afraid and ran away in all directions. Some of the prominent vṛṣṇi-s were eaten by the rākṣasa, hiḍimba. kumbhakarṇo yathā rājanbhakṣayāmasa vānarān | niḥśeṣaṁ vṛṣṇisainyaṁ tu cakāra puruṣādakaḥ | niścheśṭaṁ vṛṣṇisainyaṁ tu sthitaṁ citrapaṭe yathā ||3-126-14 ( Note 1) O king! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) In the same way kumbhakarṇa ate the monkeys (during the battle between rāma and rāvaṇa), (hiḍimbha) the man eater, consumed the entire army, and nothing of the army of vṛṣṇi-s was left behind. The army of vṛṣṇi-s was made motionless like in a picture. etasminnantare kruddhau vṛddhau yādavapuṅgavau | dhanurgṛhya mahāghoraṁ rākṣasasya puraḥ sthitau ||3-126-15 yathā kruddhasya siṁhasya mṛgau vṛddhatamāviva | In between this, the old, prominent yādava-s became angry. Taking highly terrible bows, they stood before the rākṣasa, hiḍimba, like old deer standing in front of the angry lion. vyādāyāsyaṁ mahārakṣastau vṛddhāvabhyadhāvata ||3-126-16 cikhādiṣurvirūpākṣaḥ pātālatalasannibhaḥ | The great rākṣasa, hiḍimba, having deformed eyes, ran and attacked them, opening his mouth, deep as the netherworld, widely, to swallow them. tato rakṣaḥ paryadhāvatkhādatkhādatkalevaram ||3-126-17 pūrayāmāsaturvīrau śarairyaduvṛṣau nṛpa | Then the rākṣasa, hiḍimba, came running and eating the bodies seen by him. Then O king! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) The bulls of the yādava-s shot lots of arrows and filled his mouth. hiḍimbasya mahāghoraṁ vyāditāsyamivāntakam ||3-126-18 sarvāṁstānvārayāmāsa devaśatrurvirūpadhṛk | dhāvati sma tato rakṣo vyāditāsyaṁ bhayānakam ||3-126-19 hiḍimbha, the enemy of deva-s having deformed eyes, blocked all of them, by opening, his huge, terrible mouth like the god of death. The terrifying rākṣasa arrived running, opening his mouth widely. tayorgṛhītvā dhanuṣī babhaṣja yuddhi satvaram | He took away their bows and broke them quickly in the battle. bāhū prasārya duṣṭātmā rākṣaso vikṛtānanaḥ ||3-126-20 vasudevaṁ mahīpālaṁ rājānaṁ vṛddhasevinam | grahītuṁ rākṣasaśreṣṭho yatate nṛpasaṁsadi ||3-126-21 The wicked soul, rākṣasa hiḍimba, the best among rākṣasa-s, having a deformed face, extended his long arms and tried to catch vasudeva and the protector of the earth, king (ugrasena) served by the aged in the assembly of kings. hiḍimba uvāca eṣa vāṁ bhakṣayiṣyāmi vasudevaṁ tvayā saha | ugrasena kimarthaṁ tvaṁ tiṣṭhase matpurogamaḥ ||3-126-22 hiḍimba said: O ugrasena! Here I shall eat you along with vasudeva. For what purpose are you standing in front of me? āgaccha praviśāsyaṁ me grāsabhūtau tu vāṁ mama | vidhinā nirmito vṛddho vasudevo hareḥ pitā ||3-126-23 Come and enter my mouth. You have become my food. This vasudeva, father of hari (viṣṇu, kṛṣṇa) created by brahma, bubhukṣitaḥ śramārtaścha yuddhe tvaritavikramaḥ | manmukhānnaiṣa gacchetāṁ praviśetāṁ tvarānvitau ||3-126-24 is tired and hungry, though quick and valiant in battle. I will not leave you from my mouth. You may quickly enter the same. yuvayoḥ śoṇitaṁ pītvā tṛptiṁ yāsyāmi nirvṛtaḥ | khādāmi ca punarmāṁsaṁ vṛddhayoryuvayoḥ sukham ||3-126-25 By drinking your blood, today I will be satisfied and happy. I shall comfortably eat the flesh of both of you, who are old. iti bruvaṁstathā rakṣo vyāditāsyaṁ mahāhanuḥ | dhāvati sma tadā kṣipraṁ hiḍimbo rākśaseśvaraḥ ||3-126-26 (vaiśampāyana continued: O janamejaya!) Saying this, the rākṣasa, hiḍimbha, the lord of rākṣasa-s, having a huge cheekbone, ran all of a sudden and quickly reached with his mouth widely open. vasudevograsenau ca bhītau viprekṣya sarvataḥ | diśo'bhyabhajatāṁ rājanniḥśastrau vṛṣṇipuṅgavau ||3-126-27 O king! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) The prominent vṛṣṇi-s, vasudeva and ugrasena, became afraid, left their weapons and looked all around, and folowed different directions. etasminnantare dṛṣṭvā balabhadraḥ pratāpavān | dṛṣṭvā ca tau tathābhūtau vasudevograsenakau ||3-126-28 During this time, the splendorous balabhadra saw that vasudeva and ugrasena have become (helpless) thus vāsudeve samādiśya haṁsaṁ yudhyantamīśvare | nirgatya cāntaraṁ tasya rākṣasasya durātmanaḥ ||3-126-29 He (balarāma) assigned lord vāsudeva (kṛṣṇa) to fight with haṁsa and reached in between those and the wicked soul, the rākṣasa mā kṛthāḥ sāhasaṁ rakṣo muṣchaitau rājasattamau | sthito'smi yudhyatāṁ rakṣo mayā śatrujighāṁsatā ||3-126-30 and said: O rākṣasa! Do not act rashly. Release these best kings. I am standing in front of you. O rākṣsa! Fight with me, the slayer of enemies. ahameva haniṣye tvāṁ kā cheyam tava bhīṣikā | iti bruvāṇaṁ halinaṁ tau visṛjya mahāraṇe ||3-126-31 I will only kill you. What are you threatening? Seeing the one with plough as weapon, (balarāma), hiḍimba released them (vasudeva and ugrasena) in the great battle. mahānayamasau duṣṭo bhakṣayāmyenamagrataḥ | vidārya pūrvavadvaktraṁ balabhadramupādravat ||3-126-32 This one is huge and wicked. I shall eat him before. Saying this, hiḍimba ran towards balabhadra (balarāma), opening his mouth widely as before. viṣṛjya saśaraṁ cāpaṁ rākṣasasya puraḥ sthitaḥ | muṣṭiṁ pragṛhya balavānsphoṭayanbāhumuttamam ||3-126-33 Leaving his bow and arrow, the powerful balabhadra(balarāma) stood before the rākṣsa (hiḍimba) clapping his best hands and then folding his strong fists. hiḍimbastvatha duṣṭātmā muṣṭiṁ kṛtvā bhayānakam | jaghāna vakṣo rāmasya vyādityāsya ivāntakaḥ ||3-126-34 The wicked soul hiḍimba also folded his terrible fists and struck on the chest of (bala)rāma, opening his mouth like the god of death. kruddho'tha balabhadrastu muṣṭinā tena tāḍitaḥ | jaghāna muṣṭinā tena rākṣaseśamaninditaḥ ||3-126-35 balabhadra, struck by the fist, became angry. He, the one who is not despised, struck the lord of rākṣasa-s, with his fist. muṣṭiyuddhaṁ samabhavannararākṣasavīrayoḥ | The valiant man and rākṣsa had a battle of fists. yuddhyatoryuddharaṅge'tha nararākṣasasiṁhayoḥ ||3-126-36 tayośchaṭachaṭāśabdaḥ prādurāsīdbhayānakaḥ | As the lions of the men and rākṣsas fought, fearful sounds of fist strikes emanated from the battle field. atha rākṣasarājastu muṣṭinā rāmamāhave ||3-126-37 jaghāna vakṣodeśe tu vajreṇeva puraṁdaraḥ | In the battle field, the king of rakṣasa-s, hiḍimba, struck (bala)rāma with his fist on the chest like the destroyer of cities, indra, strikes with his vajra. atha rāmo balī sākṣānmuṣṭiṁ saṁvartya yatnataḥ ||3-126-38 hiḍimbaṁ tāḍayāmāsa vakṣasyamaravidviṣam | Then the powerful (bala)rāma, folding his fist nicely, struck on the chest of hiḍimba, the one who hates the immortals, devas. talābhyāmatha rāmastu cakre hatvā sa rākṣasam ||3-126-39 āhatastalaghātena hiḍimbo rākṣaseśvaraḥ | jānubhyāmapatadbhūmau gatāsurvīrarākṣasaḥ ||3-126-40 (bala)rāma, spreading his hand, slapped the rākṣasa on his face. hiḍimba, the lord of rākṣasa-s, struck by the slap of the hand, fell on his knees on the ground. The rakṣasa lost all his vigour. tata utpatya rāmastu dorbhyāṁ saṅgṛhya rākṣasaṁ | ādāya bahuvegena bhrāmayitvā padātpadam ||3-126-41 Then bala(rāma) leaped and caught the rākṣasa with his hands, lifted and whirled him around with the speed of his hands, step by step. vyāvidhyatsuciraṁ rāmo darśayannātmano balam | utkṣipya rākṣasendraṁ taṁ sarvalokasya paśyataḥ ||3-126-42 gavyūtimātraṁ cikṣepa tato deśāddhalayudhaḥ | (bala)rāma, showing the power of his mind, lifted the indra of rākṣasa-s, hiḍimba, up and whirled him for a long time. As all were watching, the one having the plough as his weapon, balarāma, threw the rākṣasa away to a distance of two calls. (Note 2) gatāsū rākṣasaśreṣṭhastato deśānnirākramat ||3-126-43 Thus the best among rākṣasa-s, hiḍimba lost his life and left that place. ye kechidrākṣasāstatra hataśeśā mahāraṇe | balabhadrāttato bhītā jagmuścaivaṁ disho daśa ||3-126-44 All the rākṣasa-s who were left undead in that great battle, became afraid of balabhadra (balarāma) and ran away in all the ten directions. athāṁśumālī bhagavāndineśaḥ saṁhṛtya tejāṁsi sahasraraśmiḥ | astaṁ yayau cakṣurapi prajānā- mīṣattamaścāpi samāviveśa ||3-126-45 As the lord with the rays, the lord of the day, the lord having thousands of rays, contained his splendor, the evening arrived and the eyes of all the beings entered darkness. The night arrived. tasminpraviṣṭe'tha samudratoyaṁ prajāpatau viśvamukhe jagadgurau | nakṣatranāthaḥ samupājagāma saṁdhyātamo'pi vyanaśannṛpottama ||3-126-46 O the best among kings! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) As the lord of the beings, the face of the world, the preceptor of the universe, entered the waters of the ocean, the lord of the stars duly arrived, destroying the darkness of the evening. prabhātakāle nṛpasattamo raṇo govardhane kinnaragītanādite | iti bruvanto nṛpasattamāstadā vyupāramaṁstatra raṇotsave nṛpa ||3-126-47 O king! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) The best among the kings (of the army of haṁsa and ḍimbhaka) said: "O king! It will be good if the war in the morning takes place at the mountain of govardhana, reverberating with the sound of songs sung by the kinnara-s" and retired from the festival of battle on that day.
