Parva 3 Chapter 129: ḍimbhakasyātmatyāgaḥ - ḍimbhaka commits suicide

ḍimbhako vīryasaṁpanno yumunāmanujagmivān | vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) Hearing that his highly terrible, most valiant elder brother was killed in the great battle, ḍimbhaka, endowed with valiance, left the battlefield fighting with baladeva(rāma) and went to the river yamuna. tamanvadhāvadvegena balabhadro halāyudhaḥ ||3-129-2 He was followed quickly by balabhadra (rāma) having the plough as weapon. haṁso hi yatra patitastatrāsau nipapāta ha | yamunāyāṁ mahārāja viloḍya jalasaṣchayam ||3-129-3 ḍimbhaka jumped into the river yamuna where haṁsa had fallen, O great king (janamejaya!vaiśampāyana continued), and agitated the entire water. atha kruddhaḥ sa ḍimbhako bhrāmayitvā jalaṁ bahu | unmajyonmajya sahasā nimajya ca punaḥ punaḥ ||3-129-4 Then ḍimbhaka became angry and agitated the water many times. He went inside the water, rose up, again entered the water and rose up again and again. na dadarsha tadā rājanbhrātaraṁ vīryaśālinam | unmajyātha mahābāhurvāsudevaṁ vilokya ca ||3-129-5 O king! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) He could not see his highly valiant elder brother there. The one with powerful arms, ḍimbhaka, rose up from the water and saw vāsudeva (kṛṣṇa). uvāca vacanaṁ rājanḍimbhako vīryavattamaḥ | are gopakadāyāda kvāsau haṁsa iti sthitaḥ ||3-129-6 O king! (janamejaya!vaiśampāyana continued) ḍimbhaka, the best among valiant, spoke these words: You, the son of cowherd! Where is haṁsa? vāsudevo'pi dharmātmā yamunāṁ pṛccha rājaka | ityabravītprasannātmā vāsudevaḥ pratāpavān ||3-129-7 vāsudeva (kṛṣṇa), the one with the soul of dharma, answered: O vile king! You may ask the river yamuna. Thus spoke the one with pleasant soul, the splendorous one, vāsudeva (kṛṣṇa). tacchrutvā yamunāṁ bhūyaḥ pravishya ḍimbhakaḥ kila | bahuprakāramudvīkśya bhrātaraṁ bhrātṛvatsalaḥ ||3-129-8 Hearing this, ḍimbhaka again entered the waters of the river yamuna. ḍimbhaka, who is affectionate to his elder brother searched for his brother many times. vilalāpa tato rājā ḍimbhako bhrāntamānasaḥ | kva nu gacchasi rājendra vihāyainamabāndhavam ||3-129-9 (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) Then king ḍimbhaka, with his mind confused, cried: O the indra of kings! Where are you going leaving me, without having any relatives? kuto bhrātarito gaccheḥ parityajyaiva māmiha | vilapyevaṁ nṛpaśreṣṭha ḍimbhako bhrātṛvatsalaḥ ||3-129-10 O brother! Where are you going, leaving me here? O the best among kings! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued): ḍimbhaka, affectionate to his brother lamented in this manner. ātmatyāge manaḥ kurvanyamunāyā mahāhrade | nimajyonmajya sahasā maraṇe kṛtaniśchayaḥ ||3-129-11 He decided in his mind to abandon his soul in the great pool of the river yamuna. He decided to kill himself immediately by drowning and raising up. hastena jihvāmākṛṣya bhūyo bhūyo vilapya ca | tataḥ samūlāmākṛṣya jihvāṁ sāhasakṛtsvayam ||3-129-12 With his hand, he pulled his tongue and cried again and again. Then he pulled out his tongue with its root, himself, immediately. mamārāntarjale rājanḍimbhako narakāya vai | O king! (janamejaya!vaiśampāyana continued) ḍimbhaka died inside the water. This type of death was sure to get hell for him. evaṁ tu nihate haṁse ḍimbhake vīryaśālini ||3-129-13 āgamatpuṇḍarīkākṣo bhūtānvismāpayanniva | After the highly valiant haṁsa and ḍimbhaka were killed thus, the one having eyes as beautiful as the lotus of creation (kṛṣṇa), as if to surprise all beings, came back. tataḥ prītaḥ prasannātmā vāsudevaḥ pratāpavān ||3-129-14 Then the splendorous vāsudeva (kṛṣṇa), having a pleasant soul, was pleased. govardhane'tha vishramya balabhadrasahāyavān | kiṣchitkālaṁ mahārāja pūrvabhuktamuvāsa ha ||3-129-15 kṛṣṇa took rest at the govardhana mountain along with balabhadra(rāma).
