Parva 3 Chapter 37: lokānāmādhipatyavyavasthāpanam - establishment of different lordships

vaiśampāyana uvāca trayānāmapi lokānāmādityānāṁ ca bhārata | cakāra śakraṁ rājānamādityasamatejasam ||3-37-1

Translation

vaiśampāyana said: O the one of bharata race! (O janamejaya!) The lord made śakra, the one with splendor equal to the sun, the king of the three worlds as well as of the ādityas. sa vajrī kavacī viṣṇuradityāmabhijajṣivān | smṛteḥ sahāyo dyutimānyathā so'dhvaryubhiḥ stutaḥ ||3-37-2 viṣṇu, the one who has vajra as his weapon, the one who wears a shield, was born to aditi. Having the splendor accompanied by the traditional knowledge, he is praised by the officiating priests of the sacrifice (adhvaryu). jātamātro'tha bhagavāntsa kuśairbrāhmaṇairdhṛtaḥ | tadāprabhṛti deveśaḥ kauśikatvamupāgataḥ ||3-37-3 As he was born, the lord was supported with kusha grass by the brāhmins. From that time, the lord of gods attained the state of being kaushika. abhiṣichyādhirājye tu sahasrākṣaṁ puraṁdaram | brahmā krameṇa rājyāni vyādeṣṭumupacakrame ||3-37-4 After anointing the one with thousand eyes (indra), the destroyer of cities, as the king, the lord brahma started to allocate the states in order. yajṣānāṁ tapasāṁ caiva grahanakṣatrayostathā | dvijānāmauṣadhīnāṁ tu somaṁ rājye'bhyaṣechayat ||3-37-5 The lord anointed soma (moon) as the king of sacrifices, penances, planets, stars as well as the twice-borns and medicines. dakṣaṁ prajāpatīnāṁ tu ambhasāṁ varuṇaṁ patim | pitṝṇāṁ sarvanidhanaṁ kālaṁ vaiśvānaraṁ prabhum ||3-37-6 dakṣa was made the king of the lords of beings, varuṇa was made the king of all aquatic beings. Lord vaiśvānara, the one who destroys all, the one who is splendorous as fire, was made the king of forefathers. gandhānāṁ caiva sarveṣāṁ bhūtānāṁ ca śarīriṇām | śabdākāśabalānāṁ ca vāyurīśastadā kṛtaḥ ||3-37-7 vāyu was made as the lord of all fragrance, all beings having bodies, sound, sky and strength. sarvabhūtapiśācānāṁ mṛtyūnāṁ ca gavāṁ tathā | utpātagraharogāṇāṁ vyādhīnāṁ tu tathaiva ca ||3-37-8 vratānāṁ caiva sarveṣāṁ mahādevaḥ kṛtaḥ prabhuḥ | The great among deva-s, shiva was made the lord of all beings, flesh eating demons, death, cows, all calamities, planets, diseases and ailments and all types of penances. yakṣāṇāṁ rākṣasānāṁ ca guhyakānāṁ dhanasya ca ||3-37-9 ratnānāṁ caiva sarveṣāṁ kṛto vaiśravaṇaḥ prabhuḥ | vaiśravaṇa (son of vishravas) was made the lord of yakṣa-s, rākṣasa-s, guhyaka-s, wealth and all types of jewels. sarveṣāṁ daṁṣṭriṇāṁ śeṣo nāgānāmatha vasukiḥ ||3-37-10 sarīsṛpāṇāṁ sarveṣāṁ prabhurvai takṣakaḥ kṛtaḥ | śeṣa was made the king of all those having great fangs. vāsuki was made the king of all serpents. takṣaka was made the king of all creeping animals . sāgarāṇāṁ nadīnāṁ ca meghānāṁ varṣaṇasya ca | ādityānāmavarajaḥ parjanyo'dhipatiḥ kṛtaḥ ||3-37-11 parjanya, the youngest of āditya-s was made the lord of oceans, rivers, clouds as well as the rain. gandharvāṇāmadhipatistathā citrarathaḥ kṛtaḥ | sarvāpsarogaṇānāṁ ca kāmadevaḥ prabhuḥ kṛtaḥ ||3-37-12 citraratha was made the lord of gandharvas. Lord kāmadeva was made the lord of all groups of divine women. catuṣpadānāṁ sarveṣāṁ vāhanānāṁ ca sarvaśaḥ | maheśvaradhvajaḥ śrīmāngovṛṣo'dhipatiḥ kṛtaḥ ||3-37-13 The auspicious nandi who serves as the flag of the great deva, shiva was made the lord of all four legged beings as also all vehicles. daityānāṁ ca mahātejā hiraṇyākṣaḥ prabhuḥ kṛtaḥ | hiraṇyakaśipuścaiva yauvarājye'bhiṣechitaḥ ||3-37-14 The one with great splendor, hiraṇyākṣa was made the lord of demons. hiraṇyakaśipu was anointed as the hair-apparent. gaṇānāṁ kālakeyānāṁ mahākālaḥ prabhuḥ kṛtaḥ | anāyuṣāyāḥ putrāṇāṁ vṛtro rājā tadā kṛtaḥ ||3-37-15 mahākāla was anointed as the lord of all bhūtagaṇās and kālakeyas. vṛtra was made the king of the sons of anāyuṣā. siṁhikātanayo yastu rāhurnāma mahāsuraḥ | utpātānāmanekānāmaśubhānāṁ prabhuḥ kṛtaḥ ||3-37-16 The son of siṁhikā, named rāhu, the great demon was made the lord of all types of calamities and inauspicious portents. ṛtūnāmatha sarveṣāṁ yugānāṁ caiva bhārata | pakṣāṇāṁ caiva māsānāṁ tathaiva tithiparvāṇām ||3-37-17 kalākāṣṭhāmuhūrtānāṁ gaterayanayostathā | kṛtaḥ saṁvatsaro rājā yogasya gaṇitasya ca ||3-37-18 O the one of the bharata race! ( O janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) saṁvatsara was made the lord of all seasons, yugas, fifteen lunar days, months, lunar days, periods, time, moment and the north and south bound paths of the sun as also the lord of yoga and computation. pākṣiṇāṁ caiva sarveṣāṁ cakṣuṣāṁ ca mahābalaḥ | suparṇo bhogināṁ caiva garuḍo'dhipatiḥ kṛtaḥ ||3-37-19 The highly powerful garuḍa, the one with beautiful wings, was made the lord of all birds, all those who can see far away, as well as serpents. aruṇo garuḍabhrātā japāpuṣpachayaprabhaḥ | yogānāṁ caiva sarveṣāṁ sādhyānāmadhipaḥ kṛtaḥ ||3-37-20 aruṇa, the brother of garuḍa, splendorous as the red flowers used during prayers was made the king of all yoga-s as well as sādhyas. putro'sya viratho nama kashyapasya prajāpateḥ | rājā prācyāṁ dishi tathā vāsavenādhipaḥ kṛtaḥ ||3-37-21 The son of the lord of beings kashyapa, named viratha was made the king of the eastern direction by vāsava (indra). ādityasya vibhoḥ putro dharmarājo mahāyaśāḥ | dakṣiṇasyāṁ dishi yamo mahendreṇaiva satkṛtaḥ ||3-37-22 The son of lord āditya (sun), the lord dhramarāja, yama, having great fame, was made the king of southern direction and he was felicitated by the great indra. kaśyapasyaurasaḥ putra salilāntargataḥ sadā | amburājya iti khyātaḥ pratīchyāṁ dishi pārthivaḥ ||3-37-23 kashyapa's legitimate son, varuṇa, who always stays under water and known as the king of water was made the king of the western direction. pulastyaputro dyutimānmahendrapratimaḥ prabhuḥ | ekākṣaḥ piṅgalo nāma saumyāyāṁ dishi pārthivaḥ ||3-37-24 The son of pulastya, the lord named piṅgala, splendorous as the great indra and having one eye, was made the king of the northern direction. evaṁ vibhajya rājyāni svayaṁbhūrlokabhāvanaḥ | lokāṁścha tridive divyānadadatsa pṛthakpṛthak ||3-37-25 Dividing the world in this way, the lord who was born by himself, the lord who desires the welfare of all beings, allocated divine worlds for those kings in heaven. kasyachitsūryasaṁkāśānkasyachidvahnisannibhān | kasyachitsuṣṭhu vidyotānkasyaciccandranirmalān ||3-37-26 Some were given splendorous worlds similar to that of the sun. Some were given worlds similar to that of fire. Some were given worlds shining like lightning. Some were given worlds without any impurity like the moon. nānāvarṇānkāmagamānanekaśataśo janān | sa tānsukṛtināṁ lokānpāpaduṣkṛtidurlabhān ||3-37-27 These worlds were having variety of colours. These could move anywhere as they wished. Many were residing in these worlds, who performed auspicious deeds. Those doing sinful deeds were rare (in these worlds). yeṣāṁ bhāso vibhāntyagre saumyāstārāgaṇā iva | ete sukṛtināṁ lokā ye jātāḥ puṇyakarmiṇaḥ ||3-37-28 These worlds which are seen shining as group of stars are the worlds of those who perform good deeds. These worlds were created for those who perform auspicious deeds. ye yajanti makhaiḥ puṇyaiḥ samāptavaradakṣiṇaiḥ | svadāraniratāḥ śāntā ṛjavaḥ satyavādinaḥ ||3-37-29 dīnānugrahakartāro brahmaṇyā lobhavarjitāḥ | saṁtyaktarajasaḥ santo yānti tatra tapo'malāḥ ||3-37-30 Those who perform auspicious sacrifices giving tributes in the end, always loving their wives, calm, straightforward, truthful, helping those who suffer, those who worship brāhmins, greed-less, those who abandon the rājasa qualities, those are pure with penances go to these worlds. evaṁ niyujya tanayāntsvayaṁ lokapitāmahaḥ | puṣkaraṁ brahmasadanamāruroha prajāpatiḥ ||3-37-31 The lord brahma, the lord of beings, the grandfather of the world, assigning his sons in this manner, went to the house of brahma, puṣkara. sarve svayaṁbhudatteṣu pālaneṣu divaukasaḥ | remire sveṣu lokeṣu mahendreṇābhipālitāḥ ||3-37-32 All the deva-s, protecting the worlds given by the one who was born by himself, protected by the great indra, enjoyed, living in their own worlds. svayaṁbhuvā śakrapuraḥsarāḥ surāḥ kṛtā yathārhaṁ pratipālaneṣu te | yasho divaṁ ca pratipedire śubhaṁ mudaṁ ca jagmurmakhabhāgabhojinaḥ ||3-37-33 All the deva-s, beginning with śakra, taking their portions in the sacrifices, on being assigned by brahma for protecting the worlds as required, became pleased.
