Parva 3 Chapter 39: hiraṇyākṣavadhaḥ - hiraṇyākṣa killed

vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) As the efforts of the lord of deva-s (indra) were made useless and as the deva-s were oppressed, the one who holds the cakra (wheel) and mace, viṣṇu decided to kill hiraṇyākṣa. vārāhaḥ parvato nāma yaḥ pūrvaṁ samudāhṛtaḥ | sa eṣa bhūtvā bhagavānājagāmāsurāntakṛt ||3-39-2 The Lord taking the same form of varāha, huge as a mountain, which was explained before, went near the asura, hiraṇyākṣa. tataścandrapratīkāṣamagṛhṇācchaṅkhamuttamam | sahasrāraṁ ca taccakraṁ cakraparvatasannibham ||3-39-3 Then he took up the best conch, beautiful as the moon, as well as the cakra (wheel) having one thousand spokes, huge like a mountain. mahādevo mahābuddhirmahāyogī maheśvaraḥ | paṭhyate yo'maraiḥ sarvairguhyairnāmabhiravyayaḥ ||3-39-4 He is the great deva of great intellect. He is the great yogi, the great lord. He is the one who does not have any decline, who is praised with names having secret meanings by those who do not die (deva-s). sadasachcātmani śreṣṭhaḥ sadbhiryaḥ sevyate sadā | ijyate yaḥ purāṇaiścha triloke lokabhāvanaḥ ||3-39-5 He is the best among the good souls. He is always served by good men. He is the one concerned with the welfare of the world, who is worshipped by the experts of ancient histories in the three worlds. yo vaikuṇṭhaḥ surendrāṇāmananto bhogināmapi | viṣṇuryo yogaviduṣāṁ yo yajṣo yajṣakarmaṇām ||3-39-6 He is the one who resides at vaikuṇṭha for the best among devas. He is Ananta (with out end) to the serpents. He is viṣṇu for the experts in yoga. He is he sacrifice for those who perform sacrifice. makhe yasya prasādena bhuvanasthā divaukasaḥ | ājyaṁ maharṣibhirdattamaśnuvanti tridhā hutam ||3-39-7 He is the one by whose pleasure, the deva-s of heaven, can partake the offering, offered by the great sages in three ways in the sacrifices performed on earth. yo gatirdevadaityānāṁ yaḥ surāṇāṁ parā gatiḥ | yaḥ pavitraṁ pavitrāṇāṁ svayambhūravyayo vibhuḥ ||3-39-8 He is the destination of deva-s and asuras. He is the ultimate destination of the devas. He is the most sacred among sacred. He is born by himself. He is the lord without any decline. yasya cakrapraviṣṭāni dānavānāṁ yuge yuge | kulānyākulatāṁ yānti yāni dṛṣṭāni vīryataḥ ||3-39-9 He is the one who seeing the asura-s becoming powerful in each era, make them enter the cakra and render them in a sad state. tato daityadravakaraṁ paurāṇāṁ śaṅkhamuttamam | dhamanvaktreṇa balavānākṣipaddaityajīvitam ||3-39-10 Then blowing the best among the conches, the ancient conch, which drives the asura-s away, with his mouth, the powerful lord shook the asura's life. śrutvā śaṅkhasvanaṁ ghoramasurāṇāṁ bhayāvaham | kṣubhitā dānavāḥ sarve disho daśa vyalokayan ||3-39-11 Hearing the terrible sound of the conch, fearful for the demons, all the demons became angry and looked in all the ten directions. tataḥ saṁraktanayano hiraṇyākṣo mahāsuraḥ | ko'yamityabravīdroṣānnārāyaṇamudaikṣata ||3-39-12 Then the great asura, hiraṇyākṣa, with blood-red eyes, saying angrily who is this, looked at nārāyaṇa. vārāharūpiṇaṁ devaṁ saṁsthitaṁ puruṣottamam | śaṅkhacakrodyatakaraṁ devānāmārtināśanam ||3-39-13 The demon looked at the lord, the best among men, the destroyer of the sorrow of deva-s, standing in the form of varāha, holding the conch and cakra (wheel) in his hands. rarāja śaṅkhacakrābhyāṁ tābhyāmasurasūdanaḥ | sūryacandramasormadhye yathā nīlapayodharaḥ ||3-39-14 The slayer of asuras, sparkled with the conch and cakra (wheel) like a dark blue rain bearing cloud sparkles between the sun and the moon. tato'suragaṇāḥ sarve hiraṇyākṣapurogamāḥ | udyatāyudhanistriṁśā dṛptā devamupādravan ||3-39-15 Then all the groups of the proud asura-s, lead by hiraṇyākṣa in the front, taking up weapons attacked the lord. pīḍyamāno'tibalibhirdaityaiḥ sarvāyudhodyataiḥ | na cacāla hariryuddhe'kampyamāna ivācalaḥ ||3-39-16 Attacked by the highly powerful demons, who were holding all kinds of weapons, hari (viṣṇu - varāha) did not move in the battle, like a mountain which can not be shaken. tataḥ prajvalitāṁ śaktiṁ vārāhorasi dānavaḥ | hiraṇyākṣo mahātejāḥ pātayāmāsa vīryavān ||3-39-17 The valiant demon hiraṇyākṣa, having high splendor, struck a blazing spear on the chest of varāha (viṣṇu). tasyāḥ śaktyāḥ prabhāveṇa brahmā vismayamāgataḥ | samīpamāgatāṁ dṛṣṭvā mahāśaktiṁ mahābalaḥ ||3-39-18 brahmā was struck by wonder by the splendor of that spear. The one with great power, seeing the great spear approaching near, huṁkāreṇaiva nirbhartsya pātayāmāsa bhūtale | tasyāṁ pratihatāyāṁ tu brahmā sādhviti cābravīt ||3-39-19 denounced it with the sound huṁ and felled it on the ground. As the spear was broken thus, brahmā said, "Well done". yaḥ prabhuḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ varāhastena tāḍitaḥ | tato bhagavatā cakramāvidhyādityasannibham ||3-39-20 The lord of all beings, lord varāha, as he was attacked by the asura, the lord whirled his cakra (wheel), looking like sun pātitaṁ dānavendrasya śirasyuttamakarmaṇā | tataḥ sthitasyaiva shirastasya bhūmau papāta ha | hiraṇmayaṁ vajrahataṁ meruśṛṅgamivottamam ||3-39-21 and sent it towards the king of demons, (hiraṇyākṣa) and felled his head for the best reason. Struck by the cakra (wheel), his head fell on the earth, like a golden peak of the meru mountain, struck by vajra. hiraṇyākṣe hate daitye śeṣā ye tatra dānavāḥ | sarve tasya bhayatrastā jagmurāśu disho daśa ||3-39-22 As hiraṇyākṣa was killed, all the remaining demons, afraid of lord viṣṇu, ran away from there in all the ten directions. sa sarvalokāpraticakracakro mahāhaveṣvapratimogracakraḥ | babhau varāho yudhi cakrapāṇiḥ kālo yugānteṣviva daṇḍapāṇiḥ The one holding the cakra (wheel) unopposed in all the worlds, the one holding the terrible wheel unopposed, the one holding the wheel, sparkled in the battlefield like the god of death holding his staff at the end of the era. iti śrīmahābhārate khileṣu harivaṁśe bhaviṣyaparvaṇi vārāhe ekonacatvāriṁśo'dhyāyaḥ Thus this is the thirtynineth chapter of bhavishyaparva, harivaṁśa, khila of mahābhārata, in the manifestation of the great boar, hiraṇyākṣa killed nīlakaṇṭha commentary · 3-39-1 niṣprayatna iti | parvato nāma parvāṇi darśapūrṇamāsādīni avayavatvena vartante'sminniti parvato yajṣatanurnāmetyarthaḥ | ya eṣa vakṣyamāṇaguṇaḥ sa varāho bhūtveti saṁbandhaḥ || · 3-39-7 tridhā hutaṁ hutahūyamānaprahūtākhyaprakāratrayeṇa hutā agnau hūyamānā anaganau prahutā brāhmaṇabhojane ityāśvalāyanavyākhyātena || · 3-39-23 apraticakram apratihatājṣaṁ cakraṁ yasya saḥ || iti śrīmahābhārate khileṣu harivaṁśe bhaviṣyaparvaṇi ṭīkāyāmekonacatvāriṁśo'dhyāyaḥ ||
