vaiśampāyana uvāca vidrāvya tu raṇe sarvānasurānpuruṣottamaḥ | mumocha tatra baddhāṁstānpuraṁdaramukhānsurān ||3-40-1

Translation

vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) After making all the asura-s run away from the battle, the best among men, (viṣṇu in the form of varāha) released the deva-s including the destroyer of strongholds (indra). tataḥ prakṛtimāpannāḥ sarve devagaṇāstathā | puraṁdaraṁ puraskṛtya nārāyaṇamupasthitāḥ ||3-40-2 Then all the groups of deva-s, led by the destroyer of strongholds (indra) who regained their original state, stood in the service of narāyaṇa. devā ūcuḥ tvatprasādena bhagavaṁstava bāhubalena ca | jivamo'dya mahābāho niṣkrāntāścāntakānanāt ||3-40-3 deva-s said: O lord! O the one with powerful arms! We live due to your pleasure, and also due to the power of your arms. Now we are rescued from the mouth of the god of death. tvachcāsanāddhi bhagavankiṁ kurvantyaditeḥ sutāḥ | ichcāmaḥ pādaśuśrūṣāṁ tava kartuṁ sanātana ||3-40-4 O lord! What shall we, the sons of diti, do according to your order? O the eternal one! We wish to serve your feet (you). vaiśampāyana uvāca tacchrutvā vacanaṁ teṣāṁ puṇḍarīkanibhekṣaṇaḥ | uvāca vacanaṁ devānmudā yukto hatadviṣaḥ ||3-40-5 vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) Hearing the words spoken by the deva-s, the one with eyes as beautiful as the lotus flower (viṣṇu), spoke the following words happily to deva-s, whose enemy was killed. śrībhagavānuvāca yo yasya bhavato loko mayaiva vihitaḥ purā | pālyatāṁ sa tu yajṣena niyogashcha kvachitkvachit ||3-40-6 The auspicious lord (varāha - viṣṇu) said: Make efforts to follow my directions by protecting the worlds, whichever I have allocated to you before. aiśvaryaṁ pratipannaḥ svaṁ kratubhāgapuraskṛtam | mayaiva pūrvaṁ nirdiṣṭo niyogaḥ pratipālyatām ||3-40-7 You have already obtained the prosperity presented by (partaking) the portions of sacrifice. Obey the directions given to you by me before. śakraṁ chovāca bhagavānvacanaṁ dundubhisvanaḥ | idaṁ yathāvatkartavyaṁ satsu cāsatsu ca tvayā ||3-40-8 (vaiśampāyana said: O janamejaya!) The lord, having the loud sound of a kettle drum, spoke the following words to śakra (indra) also: You shall do your duty in the right way, appropriate for good men. gacchantu tapasā svargaṁ munayaḥ śaṁsitavratāḥ | tava lokaṁ suraśreṣṭha sarvakāmadughaṁ sadā | The sages, those who observe vows , shall go to heaven (your world), which always fulfills all desires, O the best among deva-s (indra)! due to their penances. yāyajūkāścha ye kechidbrāhmaṇāḥ kṣatriyā viśaḥ ||3-40-9 teṣāṁ kāmadughā lokāḥ svargamādimanoharāḥ | Whichever brāhmaṇa, kṣatriya or vaishya who performs sacrifices will attain wonderful worlds such as heaven, which fulfill all their desires. yajṣairiṣṭvā yāyajūkāḥ phalaṁ te prāpnuvantu ca ||3-40-10 Those who are keen on performing sacrifices, will do the same and obtain the results. bhāvaḥ saddharmaśīlānāmabhāvaḥ pāpakarmaṇām | santaḥ svargajitaḥ santu sarvāśramanivāsinaḥ ||3-40-11 Those who are with good behavior will prosper and they will not do any sinful deeds. All those living in hermitages shall be victorious in heaven. satyaśūrā raṇe śūrā dānaśūrāścha ye narāḥ | te narāḥ svargamashnantu sadā ye cānasūyavaḥ ||3-40-12 Those who are valiant in truth, valiant in battle, valiant in carity, and those are not envious, they shall always attain heaven. aśraddadhānāḥ puruṣāḥ kāmino'rthaparāḥ śaṭhāḥ | abrahmaṇyā nāstikāścha narakaṁ yāntu mānavāḥ ||3-40-13 Those who are not attentive, greedy, selfish and stubborn, harming the Brahmins and do not believe in god, shall go to hell. etāvatkriyatāṁ vākyaṁ mayoktaṁ tridaśeśvarāḥ | tato mayi sthite sarvānbādhiṣyante na cārayaḥ ||3-40-14 O the lord of heaven (indra)! If you implement the words spoken by me, then as along as I am there, all of you shall not be affected by your enemies. ityuktvāntarhito devaḥ śaṅkacakragadādharaḥ | devatānāṁ ca sarveṣāmabhavadvismayo mahān ||3-40-15 Speaking thus, the lord, the one who holds the conch, cakra and mace disappeared. All the deva-s were struck by great wonder. etadatyadbhutaṁ dṛṣṭvā vārāhacaritaṁ surāḥ | namaskṛtya varāhāya nākapṛṣṭhamito gatāḥ ||3-40-16 Seeing this most wonderful adventure of (lord) varāha, the deva-s bowed to (lord) varāha (viṣṇu) and happily went to the backside (interiors) of heaven from there. tataḥ svānyādhipatyāni pratipannāni daivataiḥ | sarvalokādhipatye ca pratiṣṭhāṁ vāsavo gatāḥ ||3-40-17 Then the deva-s resumed their command of their regions and vāsava (indra) was installed as the lord of all the worlds. vimuktā dānavagaṇaiḥ prakṛtiṁ dharaṇī gatā | The earth, released from the groups of demons, regained its natural position. sthairyahetordharaṇyāstu jṣātvā cāgaskṛtāngirīn ||3-40-18 sveṣu sthāneṣu saṁsthāpya parvatānāṁ puraṁdaraḥ | ciccheda bhagavānpakṣānvajreṇa śataparvaṇā ||3-40-19 Knowing that the mountains are responsible for lack of firmness (immobility) of earth, the destroyer of strongholds (indra), the lord, after installing the mountains at their own places, cut off their wings with his weapon, the hundred jointed (edged) (shataparva) vajra. sarveṣāmeva pakṣā vai cinnāḥ śakreṇa dhīmatā | ekaḥ sapakṣo mainakaḥ suraistatsamayaḥ kṛtaḥ ||3-40-20 śakra (indra), having intellect, cut off the wings of all the mountains, except maināka (the son of himavat by menā) who was left with wings as per the agreement with devas. eṣa nārāyaṇasyāyaṁ prādurbhāvo mahātmanaḥ | vārāha iti viprendraiḥ purāṇe parikīrtitaḥ ||3-40-21 This is the description of varāha manifestation of the great soul, nārāyaṇa, as extolled by the indra (king) of brāhmins in ancient histories. kṛṣṇadvaipāyanamataṁ nānāśrutisamāhitam | nāśucherna kṛtaghnāya na nṛśaṁsāya kīrtayet ||3-40-22 This, along with the sacred knowledge heard from the beginning, as stated by kṛṣṇadvaipāyana (vyāsa), should not be told to the one who are impure, ungrateful and cruel. na kṣudrāya na nīcāya na gurudveṣakāriṇe | nāśiṣyāya tathā rājanna kṛtaghnāya caiva hi ||3-40-23 O king! (O janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) This should not be told to the mean, low, those who hate the perceptor, those who are not students and also to those who are ungrateful. āyuṣkāmairyaśaḥ kāmairmahīkāmaiścha mānavaiḥ | jayaiṣibhiścha shrotavyo devānāmeṣa vai jayaḥ ||3-40-24 Those who desire long life, fame, land and those who desire victory shall listen to this victory of the devas. purāṇavedasaṁbaddhaḥ śivaḥ svastyayano mahan | pāvanaḥ sarvasattvānāṁ tatkālavijayapradaḥ ||3-40-25 This account, concerning ancient history and vedas, is auspicious and will ensure a prosperous venture. This is sacred for all the beings and will ensure victory at that time. eṣa kauravya tattvena kathitastvanupūrvaśaḥ | vārāhasya nṛpaśreṣṭha prādurbhāvo mahātmanaḥ ||3-40-26 Thus, O the one of the race of kuru (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued), I have told you, in principle, sequentially, O the best among kings, (vaiśampāyana continued) the manifestation of the great soul, varāha (viṣṇu). ye yajanti makhaiḥ puṇyairdaivatāni pitṝnapi | ātmānamātmanā nityaṁ viṣṇumeva jayanti te ||3-40-27 Those who perform holy sacrifices for deva-s and also for the forefathers are performing sacrifices for viṣṇu, the eternal soul of the soul. lokāyanāya tridaśāyanāya brāhmāyanāyātmabhavāyanāya | nārāyaṇāyātmahitāyanāya mahavarāhāya namaskuruṣva ||3-40-28 O king!
