Parva 3 Chapter 44: nṛsiṁhasyopari daityānāṁ śastrāstrapātaḥ - daitya-s do battle with narasimha

vaiśaṁpāyana said: (O janamejaya!) Hearing the words spoken by prahrāda, hiraṇyakaśipu, the lord of the groups of demons said to all the groups of demons: mṛgendro gṛhyatāṁ śīghramapūrvāṁ tanumāsthitaḥ | yadi vā saṁśayaḥ kaśchidvadhyatāṁ vanagocharaḥ ||3-44-2 (hiraṇyakaśipu said) Catch quickly the indra (king) of animals, having a body not seen before. If you have any doubt whatsoever, kill this one who moves in the forest. tacchrutvā dānavāḥ sarve mṛgendraṁ bhīmavikramam | parikṣipanto muditāstrāsayāmāsurojasā ||3-44-3 (vaiśaṁpāyana continued: O janamejaya!) Hearing these words, all the demons happily surrounded the indra (king) of animals and (tried to) make him tremble with their strength. siṁhanādaṁ naditvā tu punaḥ siṁho mahābalaḥ | babhaṣja tāṁ sabhāṁ ramyāṁ vyāditāsya ivāntakaḥ ||3-44-4 The (man-)lion, having great power, again with a roar of lion, shattered the beautiful assembly with his open mouth, like the god of death. sabhāyāṁ bhajyamānāyāṁ hiraṇyakaśipuḥ svayam | cikṣepāstrāṇi siṁhasya roṣavyākulalocanaḥ ||3-44-5 As the assembly was shattered, hiraṇyakaśipu himself, his eyes burning with anger, shot arrows towards the man-lion. sarvāstrāṇāmatha śreṣṭhaṁ daṇḍamastraṁ subhairavam | kālacakraṁ tathātyugraṁ viṣṇucakraṁ tathaiva ca ||3-44-6 The best among all the weapons, the weapon daṇḍa, highly frightful, the most terrible wheel of Time and also the wheel of viṣṇu, dharmacakraṁ mahaccakramajitaṁ nāma nāmataḥ | cakramaindraṁ tathā ghoramṛṣicakraṁ tathaiva ca ||3-44-7 the wheel of dharma, the great wheel named as the one which can not be conquered , the wheel of indra and also the terrible wheel of the sages, paitāmahaṁ tathā cakraṁ trailokyamahitasvanam | vicitramaśanīṁ caiva śuṣkārdraṁ cāśanidvayam ||3-44-8 and the wheel of the great grandfather having a great sound in all the three worlds, the strange lightning, the dry as well as the wet lightning, raudraṁ tadugraṁ śūlaṁ ca kaṅkālaṁ musalaṁ tathā | astraṁ brahmashirashcaiva brāhmamastraṁ tathaiva ca ||3-44-9 the dreadful and terrible spear, and also the mace called kaṅkāla, the weapon brahmashira and also the weapon of brahma, aiṣīkamastramaindraṁ ca āgneyaṁ śaiśiraṁ tathā | vāyavyaṁ mathanaṁ nāma kāpālamatha kiṅkaram ||3-44-10 the weapon of the reed, the weapon of indra. the weapon of the fire god, the weapon of the cool season (shishira), the weapon of the god of wind named the oppressing, (the weapons named) skull (kāpāla) and the kiṅkara, tathā cāpratimāṁ śaktiṁ krauṣchamastraṁ tathaiva ca | astraṁ hayashirashcaiva saumyamastraṁ tathaiva ca ||3-44-11 and also the spear named shakti which can not be opposed, the weapon krauṣcha, the weapon of the hayashira (horse-head), and also the weapon named saumya, paiśācamastramamitaṁ sārpyamastraṁ tathādbhutam | mohanaṁ śoṣaṇaṁ caiva saṁtāpanavilāpane ||3-44-12 the weapon paiśāca having no bounds, the wonderful weapon sārpya (related to serpent), the weapon which confuses (mohana), the weapon that thins, the weapons saṁtāpana (that heats) and vilāpana (that makes one cry), jṛmbhaṇaṁ prāpaṇaṁ caiva tvāṣṭraṁ caiva sudāruṇam | kālamudgaramakṣobhyaṁ kṣobhaṇaṁ tu mahābalam ||3-44-13 the weapon which causes yawning, the weapon prāpaṇa (reaching) and the terrible weapon tvāṣṭra, the hammer of Time, the highly powerful weapon kṣobhaṇa, saṁvartanaṁ mohanaṁ ca tathā māyādharaṁ param | gāndharvamastraṁ dayitamasiratnaṁ ca nandakam ||3-44-14 the weapon saṁvartana, the confusing weapon, the weapon māyādhara, the dear weapon gāndharva, the jewel among the swords nandakam, prasvāpanaṁ pramathanaṁ vāruṇaṁ cāstramuttamam | astram pāśupataṁ caiva yasyāpratihatā gatiḥ ||3-44-15 the weapons prasvāpna, pramathana, the best among weapons vāruṇa, the weapon pāśupata, whose path is not blocked anywhere, etānyastrāṇi sarvāṇi hiraṇyakaśipustadā | cikṣepa nārasiṁhasya dīptasyāgneryathāhutiḥ ||3-44-16 hiraṇyakaśipu himself sent all these weapons on the man-lion, like pouring oblations on the fire (in a yajṣa). astraiḥ prajvālitaiḥ siṁhamāvṛṇodasurādhipaḥ | vivasvāndharmasamaye himavantamivāṁśubhiḥ ||3-44-17 The king of demons, covered the man-lion with blazing weapons, like vivasvān (the sun) covers the mountain himavanta with his (scorching) rays during the summer. sa hyamarṣānilodbhūto daityānāṁ sainyasāgaraḥ | kṣaṇenāplāvayatsiṁhaṁ mainākamiva sāgaraḥ ||3-44-18 The ocean of the army of the demons, blown by the winds of anger, drowned the man-lion, like the mountain maināka is drowned in the ocean. prāsaiḥ pāśaistathā śūlairgadābhirmusalaistathā | vajrairashanikalpaishcha śilābhiścha mahādrumaiḥ ||3-44-19 The weapons such as knives, ropes, spears, maces, clubs, vajra-s, lightning, rocks and huge trees, mudgaraiḥ kūṭapāśaiścha śūlolūkhalaparvataiḥ | śataghnībhiścha dīptābhirdaṇḍairapi sudāruṇaiḥ ||3-44-20 hammers, iron mallets, ropes, spears, wooden staffs, mountains, wood studded with iron spikes, blazing staffs with thorns and terrible staffs, parivārya samantāttu nighnannastrairhariṁ tadā | svalpamapyasya na kṣuṇṇamūrjitasya mahātmanaḥ ||3-44-21 were thrown at hari (viṣṇu) to kill him, surrounding him all around. The great soul with splendor was not even harmed a bit. te dānavāḥ pāśagṛhītahastā mahendravajrāśanitulyavegāḥ | samantato'bhyudyatabāhuśastrāḥ sthitāstriśīrṣā iva pannagendrāḥ ||3-44-22 The demons with speed equal to the lightning vajra of the great indra, holding ropes in their hands, with weapons ready in their hands, stood surrounding the man-lion like serpent kings having three heads. suvarṇamālākulabhūṣitāṅgā nānāṅgadābhogapinaddhagātrāḥ | muktāvalīdāmavibhūṣitāṅgā haṁsā ivābhānti viśālapakṣāḥ ||3-44-23 The demons with their limbs decorated by golden garlands, wearing varieties of bracelets on their arms and bodies, decorated by garlands of pearl, sparkled like a row of swans with their wings spread wide. teṣāṁ tu vāyupratimaujasāṁ vai keyūramālāvalayotkaṭāni | tānyuttamāṅgānyabhito vibhānti prabhātasūryāṁśusamaprabhāṇi ||3-44-24 The demons having splendor competing with the god of wind, with their bodies and arms decorated by bracelets, sparkled, equal to the splendorous sun. taiḥ prakṣipadbhirjvalitānalopamai- rmahāstrapūgaiḥ sa samāvṛto babhau | giriryathā saṁtatavarṣibhirghanaiḥ kṛtāndhakārod'bhutakandaradrumaḥ ||3-44-25 The one (man-lion) surrounded by the great weapons sent by the demons, blazing like fire shone like a great mountain, darkened by the rain bearing clouds. tairhanyamāno'pi mahāstrajālaiḥ sarvaistadā daityagaṇaiḥ sametaiḥ | nākampatājau bhagavānpratāpavā- nsthitaḥ prakṛtyā himavānivācalaḥ ||3-44-26 As the groups of the army of demons showered groups of terrible weapons, the splendorous lord, standing like the mountain himalaya did not even shake. saṁtāpitāste narasiṁharūpiṇā diteḥ sutāḥ pāvakadīptatejasā | bhayādvicheluḥ pavanoddhatā yathā mahormayaḥ sāgaravārisaṁbhavaḥ ||3-44-27 The sons of diti, having splendor like blazing fire, those burned by the lord in the form of man-lion, moved due to fear, like the great waves of the ocean turned upside down by a great wind. śatairdhanurbhiḥ sumahātivegā yugāntakālapratimāṣcharaughān | ekāyanasthā mumuchurnṛsiṁhe mahāsurāḥ krodhavidīpitāṅgāḥ ||3-44-28 The great demons, their limbs blazing with anger, shot groups of weapons, blazing like the fire at the end of the era, with great speed, using hundreds of bows. iti śrīmahābhārate khileṣu harivaṁśe bhaviṣyaparvaṇi nārasiṁhe catuścatvāriṁśo'dhyāyaḥ Thus this is the fourtyfourth chapter of bhaviṣyaparva, harivamsha, khila of mahābhārata , in the manifestation of man-lion, daitya-s do battle with narasimha nīlakaṇṭha commentary · 3-44-1 prahrādasyeti | · 3-44-8 śuṣkā nirmedhā ārdrāḥ samedhāḥ || iti śrīmahābhārate khileṣu harivaṁśe bhaviṣyaparvaṇi ṭīkāyāṁ catuścatvāriṁśo'dhyāyaḥ ||
