candrārdhacandravaktrāścha pradīptāgnimukhāstathā ||3-45-2
also demons with face of young sun, demons with faces like meteors, demons having faces of moon and half moon, demons having the face of blazing fire,
haṁsakukkuṭavaktrāścha vyāditāsyā bhayavahāḥ |
paṣcāsyā lelihānāścha kākaghṛdhramukhāstathā ||3-45-3
demons with the face of swans, wild cocks, demons with faces affected with diseases, demons with fearful faces, five faced demons, demons with serpent faces, demons with faces of crows and vultures,
vidyujjihvāstriśīrṣāścha tatholkāsannibhānanāḥ |
mahāgrāhanibhāścānye dānavā baladarpitāḥ ||3-45-4
demons with lightning tongues, three headed demons, demons with faces like meteors, demons with faces like great crocodiles or hippopotamuses and other demons proud of their strength,
kailāsavapuṣastasya śarīre śaravṛṣṭayaḥ |
avadhyasya mṛgendrasya na vyathāṁ cakrurāhave ||3-45-5
showered arrows during the battle, on the man-lion's body, huge as mountain kailāsa. The arrows did not afflict pain to the indra (king) of animals (man-lion) who can not be killed.
evaṁ bhūyo'parānghorānasṛjandānavāḥ śarān |
mṛgendrasyorasi kruddhā niḥśvasanta ivoragāḥ ||3-45-6
In this manner, the angry demons, like hissing serpents, again showered terrible arrows on the body of the indra (king) of animals (man-lion).
te dānavaśarā ghorā mṛgendrāya samīritāḥ |
vilayaṁ jagmurākāśe khadyotā iva parvate ||3-45-7
The terrible arrows shot by the demons at the indra (king) of animals dissolved in the sky like the fireflies disappearing in the mountain.
tataścakrāṇi divyāni daityāḥ krodhasamanvitāḥ |
mṛgendrāyākṣipantyāśu prajvalantīva sarvaśaḥ ||3-45-8
The angry demons sent divine wheels towards the indra (king) of animals which blazed all over.
tairāsīdgaganaṁ cakraiḥ saṁpatadbhiḥ samāvṛtam |
yugānte saṁprakāśadbhiścandrasūryagrahairiva ||3-45-9
The sky was fully covered by those blazing wheels like the sun, moon and the planets brightening the sky at the end of the era.
tāni cakrāṇi vadanaṁ pravishanti vibhānti vai |
meghodaradarīṁ ghorāṁ candrasūryagrahā iva ||3-45-10
Those wheels, entering the face of the man-lion, lost their splendor, like the sun, moon and the planets entering the belly of a terrible cloud.
tāni cakrāṇi sarvāṇi mṛgendreṇa mahātmanā |
nigīrṇāni pradīptāni pāvakārchiḥsamāni vai ||3-45-11
The indra (king) of animals, the great soul, swallowed all those wheels, blazing like flames of fire.
hiraṇyakaśipurdaityo bhūyaḥ prāsṛjadūrjitām |
śaktiṁ prajvalitāṁ ghorāṁ hutāśanasamaprabhām ||3-45-12
The demon hiraṇyakaśipu again shot a fast moving spear, shakti, blazing terribly with the splendor of the one who eats oblations (fire god).
tāmāpatantīṁ saṁprekṣya mṛgendraḥ śaktimuttamām |
huṅkāreṇaiva raudreṇa babhaṣja bhagavāṁstadā ||3-45-13
Seeing shakti, the best among spears approaching quickly, the indra (king) of animals, the lord, broke it with a terrible sound of huṅkāra.
rarāja bhagnā sā śaktirmṛgendreṇa mahītale |
savisphuliṅgā jvalitā maholkeva nabaśchyutā ||3-45-14
The spear shakti, broken by the indra (king) of animals shone on the face of earth like a great meteor which fell from the sky with sparks.
nārācapaṅktiḥ siṁhasya sṛṣṭā reje vidūrataḥ |
nīlotpalapalāśānāṁ mālevojjvaladarśanā ||3-45-15
The group of sharp arrows shot at the lion (man-lion) sparkled from a distance like a sparkling garland of blue lotus flowers.
garjitvā tu yathākāmaṁ vikramya ca yathāsukham |
tatsainyamutsāritavāṁstṛṇāgrāṇīva mārutaḥ ||3-45-16
Roaring as he liked, the man-lion, displayed his valour and drove away the army of demons comfortably like a strong wind drives away tips of grass.
tato'śmavarṣaṁ daityendrā vyasṛjanta nabhogatāḥ |
nagamātraiḥ śilākhaṇḍairgirikūṭairmahāprabhaiḥ ||3-45-17
Then the best among the demons released a shower of rocks from the sky, using rock pieces, huge like mountains, splendorous like peaks of mountains.
tadaśmavarṣaṁ siṁhasya gātre nipatitaṁ mahat |
disho daśa prakīrṇaṁ hi khadyotaprakaro yathā ||3-45-18
As the shower of rocks fell on the great body of the lion, it was shattered like a row of fire flies in all the ten directions.
tadaśmaughairditisutāstadā siṁhamariṁdamam |
prāccādayanyathā meghā dhārābhiriva parvatam ||3-45-19
O the oppressor of foes! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) Then the sons of diti covered the man-lion with a group of rocks, like the rain bearing clouds cover a mountain with showers of rain.
na ca taṁ cālayāmāsurdaityaughā devamāsthitam |
bhīmavegā balaśreṣṭhaṁ samudrā iva parvatam ||3-45-20
That did not move the lord standing firm, like the one with a high speed can not move the best among the powerful, like the ocean can not move the mountain.
tato'śmavarṣe nihate jalavarṣamanantaram |
dhārābhirakṣamātrābhiḥ prādurāsītsamantataḥ ||3-45-21
When the shower of rocks was destroyed, there was a shower of water, which showered as thick as shafts , spreading all over.
nabhasaḥ prachyutā dhārāstigmavegāḥ sahasraśaḥ |
āvṛṇvansarvato vyoma diśaśchopadiśastathā ||3-45-22
Thousands of shafts of water with high speed covered the sky all over in all the directions and sub-directions.
dhārāṇāṁ sannipātena vāyorvisphūrjitena ca |
vardhatā caiva varṣeṇa na prājṣāyata kiṣchana ||3-45-23
Due to the shower of water and the fast blowing wind as well as the increasing rain, nothing could be known whatsoever.
dhārā divi ca saṁsaktā vasudhāyāṁ ca sarvaśaḥ |
na spṛśanti sma taṁ tatra nipatantyo'niśaṁ bhuvi ||3-45-24
The showers touching each other in the sky as well as on the earth all over, could not touch the man-lion, even after falling on the earth.
bāhyato vavṛṣe varṣaṁ nopariṣṭāttu toyadaḥ |
mṛgendrpratirūpasya sthitasya yudhi māyayā ||3-45-25
The rain showered outside. The rain bearing clouds did not rain on the lord, standing in the form of the indra (king) of animals in the battle field by illusion.
hate'śmavarṣe tumule jalavarṣe ca śoṣite |
sasṛjurdānavā māyāmagniṁ vāyuṁ ca sarvaśaḥ ||3-45-26
As the tumultuous shower of rocks was destroyed and as the shower of water dried up, the demons created illusion as fire and air all over.
nabhasaḥ prachyutashcaiva tigmavegaḥ samantataḥ |
jvālāmālī mahāraudro dīptatejāḥ samantataḥ ||3-45-27
A highly terrible group of scorching flames fell from the sky all over blazing with splendor with tremendous speed.
sa sṛṣṭaḥ pāvakastena daityendreṇa mahātmanā |
na śaśāka mahātejā dagdhumapratimaujasam ||3-45-28
The fire, thus created by the indra (king) of demons, the great soul, with great splendor was unable to burn the man-lion having unlimited splendor.
tamindrastoyadaiḥ sārdhaṁ sahasrākṣo'mitadyutiḥ |
mahatā toyavarṣeṇa śamayāmāsa pāvakam ||3-45-29
indra along with rain bearing clouds, the one with thousand eyes, the one with unlimited splendor, destroyed that fire, with a great shower of water.
tasyāṁ pratihatāyāṁ tu māyāyāṁ yudhi dānavāḥ |
sasṛjurghorasaṅkāśaṁ tamastīvraṁ samantataḥ ||3-45-30
As that illusion was destroyed, the demon (hiraṇaykaśipu) created a terrible dense darkness all over in the battle.
tamasā saṁvṛte loke daityeṣvāttāyudheṣu vai |
svatejasā parivṛto divākara ivābabhau ||3-45-31
As the world was surrounded by darkness and as the demons took up weapons, the man-lion sparkled with his own splendor as the sun.
triśikhāṁ bhrukuṭīṁ cāsya dadṛśurdānavā rane |
lalāṭasthāṁ trikūṭasthāṁ gaṅgāṁ tripathagāmiva ||3-45-32
In the battle field, the demons saw the three headed contraction of brows on the forehead of the lord, shining like the gaṅga with three paths on the mountain trikūṭa.
iti śrīmahābhārate khileṣu harivaṁśe bhaviṣyaparvaṇi nārasiṁhe paṣchacatvāriṁśo'dhyāyaḥ
Thus this is the fourtyfifth chapter of bhaviṣyaparva, harivamsha, khila of mahābhārata, in the manifestation of man-lion, narasimha rejects daitya's illusion
