vaiśampāyana uvāca tataḥ sarvāsu māyāsu hatāsu ditinandanāḥ | hiraṇyakaśipuṁ sarve viṣaṇṇāḥ śaraṇaṁ gatāḥ ||3-46-1

Translation

vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) Then, as all the illusions were destroyed, all the sons of diti (the demons) became dejected and they sought the refuge of hiraṇyakaśipu. tataḥ prajvalitaḥ krodhātpradahanniva tejasā | hiraṇyakaśipurdaityaścālayāmāsa medinīm ||3-46-2 Then with blazing anger and spinning with splendor, the demon king, hiraṇyakaśipu shook the earth. tataḥ prakṣubhitāḥ sarve sāgarāḥ salilākarāḥ | chalitā girayaḥ sarve sakānanavanadrumāḥ ||3-46-3 Then all the oceans, full of water, became agitated. All the mountains with forests and wild trees were shaken. tasminkruddhe tu daityendre tamobhūtamabhūjjagat | tamasā samabhūcchannaṁ na prājṣāyata kiṣchana ||3-46-4 When the indra (king) of demons became angry, the world became dark. Covered by darkness all over, nothing could be recognised. āvahaḥ pravahashcaiva vivahashcha samīraṇaḥ | parāvahaḥ saṁvahaścha udvahashcha mahābalaḥ ||3-46-5 The winds, āvaha, pravaha as well as the moving vivaha, parāvaha, saṁvaha and the highly powerful udvaha, tathā parivahaḥ śrīmānmārutā bhayaśaṁsinaḥ | ityete kṣubhitāḥ sapta mārutā gaganecarāḥ ||3-46-6 and also the auspicious parivaha - all these seven winds, moving in the sky became agitated and started giving signs of fear. ye grahāḥ sarvalokasya kṣaye prādurbhavanti vai | te grahā gagane hṛṣṭā vicaranti yathāsukham ||3-46-7 The planets which are manifested at the decline of all the worlds - those planets were seen moving happily in the sky comfortably. ayogatashcha tārāsu sarveṣvṛkṣeṣu saṅgatāḥ | sagrahaṁ sahanakṣatraṁ prajajvāla nabho nṛpa ||3-46-8 The moon connected with stars without yoga (required combination). O king! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued): the sky started blazing along with all the planets and the stars. (Note 1) vivarṇatvaṁ ca bhagavāngato divi divākaraḥ | kṛṣṇaḥ kabandhashcha mahā.ṇllakṣyate ca nabastale ||3-46-9 The lord of the day, the sun lord, became devoid of colour (lost his splendor) in the sky. A huge black headless body was seen in the sky. amuṣchachcāsitāṁ sūryo dhūmavartiṁ bhayāvahām | gaganasthashcha bhagavānabhīkṣṇaṁ paritapyate ||3-46-10 The sun released a black fearful smoke. The sun lord, staying in the sky started getting hotter and began burning (the world) more by each moment. sapta dhūmanibhā ghorāḥ sūryā divi samutthitāḥ | somasya gaganasthasya grahāḥ tiṣṭhanti śṛṅgagāḥ ||3-46-11 Then seven terrible suns, full of smoke, rose in the sky. The planets stayed above the head of moon in the sky. vāme ca dakṣiṇe caiva sthitau śukrabṛhaspatī | shanaishcharo lohitāṅgo lohitārkasamadyutiḥ ||3-46-12 śukra (Venus) and bṛhaspati (Jupiter) stayed on the left and right side. shani (ṣaturn) and lohitāṅga (the one with red body, Mars) having splendor equal to the red sun followed. samaṁ samabhirohanti durgāṇi gaganecarāḥ | śṛṅgāṇi kanakairghorā yugāntāvartakā grahāḥ ||3-46-13 The terrible planets, the planets changing the era, moving in the sky together entered the forts, the golden peaks (of the mountain meru). candramāḥ saha nakṣatrairgrahaiḥ saptabhirāvṛtaḥ | carācaravināśārthaṁ rohiṇī nābhyanandata ||3-46-14 The moon, along with the stars, surrounded by the seven planets did not appreciate rohiṇī, (paving way) for the destruction of the moving and fixed beings. gṛhīto rāhuṇā candra ulkābhirabhihanyate | ulkāḥ prajvalitāśchandre pracelurghoradarśanāḥ ||3-46-15 The moon caught by rāhu was tormented by meteors. The blazing meteors entering the moon was a terrible sight to see. devānāmapi yo devaḥ so'bhyavarṣata śoṇitam | apatangaganādulkā vidyudrūpāḥ saniḥsvanāḥ ||3-46-16 The lord of deva-s (indra) showered blood from the sky. Meteors flashed in the sky like lightning. akāle pādapāḥ sarve puṣpyanti ca phalanti ca | latāścha saphalāḥ sarvā yāḥ prādurdaityanāśanam ||3-46-17 All the trees started flowering and producing fruits as per the wrong season. The creepers became fruitful manifesting the destruction of demons. phale phalānyajāyanta puṣpe puṣpaṁ tathaiva ca | Fruits were produced on fruits and flowers on flowers. unmīlanti nimīlanti hasanti ca rudanti ca ||3-46-18 vikroshanti ca gambhīraṁ dhūmayanti jvalanti ca | pratimāḥ sarvadevānāṁ kathayanti yugakṣayam ||3-46-19 The idols of all gods opened their eyelids and closed, laughed and cried with loud voice, fumed and blazed giving indication about the decline of the era. āraṇyaiḥ saha saṁsṛṣṭā grāmyāścha mṛgapakṣiṇaḥ | cukruśurbhairavaṁ tatra mṛgendre samupasthite ||3-46-20 The villages mingled with forests. The animals and birds made fearful sounds as the indra (king) of animals approached. nadyashcha pratilomā hi vahanti kaluṣodakāḥ | aparāhṇagate sūrye lokānāṁ kṣayakārake ||3-46-21 The rivers flowed in opposite directions and water sources became muddied, as the sun, who causes decline of the world approached the afternoon. na prakāśanti ca disho raktareṇusamākulāḥ | vānaspatyā na pūjyante pūjanārhāḥ kathaṣchana ||3-46-22 The directions did not light up, mixed with red dust. The medicinal plants entitled for worship lost all kinds of worship. vāyuvegena hanyante bhidyante praṇudanti ca | tadā ca sarvabhūtānāṁ cāyā na parivartate ||3-46-23 The wind blew fast, beating, splitting and pushing. Then all beings became devoid of shadow, aparāhṇagate sūrye lokānāṁ ca yugakṣaye | tadā hiraṇyakaśipordaityasyopariveśmanaḥ ||3-46-24 as the sun who causes decline of the world approached the afternoon. Then, on top of the residence of the demon hiraṇyakaśipu, bhāṇḍāgārāyudhāgāre niviṣṭamabhavanmadhu | tathaiva cāyudhāgāre dhūmarājiradṛśyata ||3-46-25 in the depository of weapons and treasury, honeybees made their nest. In the same way, smoke was seen in the depository of weapons. sa ca dṛṣṭvā mahotpātānhiraṇyakaśipustadā | purohitaṁ tadā śukraṁ vacanaṁ chedamabravīt ||3-46-26 Then hiraṇyakaśipu, seeing the fall of great meteors, spoke the following words to his chief priest śukra. kimarthaṁ bhagavannete mahotpātāḥ samutthitāḥ | śrotumicchāmi tattvena paraṁ kautūhalaṁ hi me ||3-46-27 (hiraṇyakaśipu said:) O lord! What is the meaning of the fall of these great meteors? I have great curiosity to hear about the meaning. śukra uvāca śṛṇu rājannavahito vacanaṁ me mahāsura | yadarthamiha dṛśyante mahotpātā mahabhayāḥ ||3-46-28 śukra said: O king! Hear my words with attention, O great demon, about the meaning of the highly fearful fall of these great meteors. yasyaite saṁpradṛśyante rājṣo rāṣṭre mahāsura | desho vā hriyate tasya rājā vā bandhamarhati ||3-46-29 O great demon! The kingdom of the king, where these (meteors) are seen (as falling), O king! it means that, the kingdom will be lost and the king will be killed. ato bhuddhyā samīkṣasva yathā sarvaṁ praṇaśyati | bṛhadbhayaṁ hi na cirādbhaviśyati na saṁśayaḥ ||3-46-30 Even then, check with your intellect, as all are destroyed. A great fear, may happen without any delay. There is no doubt in this. etāvaduktvā śukrastu hiraṇyakaśipuṁ tadā | svastītyuktvā tu daityendraṁ jagāma svaṁ niveshanam ||3-46-31 (vaiśampāyana continued: O janamejaya!) Then śukra told thus to hiraṇyakaśipu. Conveying his well wishes to the indra (king) of demons (hiraṇyakaśipu), śukra returned to his home. tasmingate sa daityendro dhyātavānsuciraṁ tadā | āsāṣcakre sudīnātmā brahmavākyamanusmaran | As śukra went away, the indra (king) of demons meditated for some good amount of time. The highly sad soul sat for some time, remembering the words of lord brahma. asurāṇāṁ vināśāya surāṇāṁ vijayāya ca ||3-46-32 dṛśyante vividhotpātā ghorā ghoranidarśanāḥ | For the destruction of the asura-s and the victory of the deva-s, the terrible fall of varieties of the fearful meteors will be seen. ete cānye ca bahavo ghorā hyutpātadarśanāḥ ||3-46-33 daityendrāṇāṁ vināśāya dṛśyante kālanirmitāḥ | These as well as other terrible fall of meteors will be seen, which are made by Time, for the destruction of demon kings. tato hiraṇyakaśipurgadāmādāya satvaram ||3-46-34 abhyadravata vegena dharaṇīmanukampayan | Then hiraṇyakaśipu quickly took up the mace and shook the earth by running with high speed. hiraṇyakaśipurdaityo padā saṁsṛṣṭavānmahīm ||3-46-35 saṁdaṣṭauṣṭhapuṭaḥ krodhādvarāha iva pūrvajaḥ | The demon hiraṇyakaśipu shook the earth with his feet, like his elder brother (hiraṇyākṣa) shook varāha, biting his lips with anger. medinyāṁ kampyamānāyāṁ daityendreṇa mahātmanā ||3-46-36 mahīdharebhyo nāgendrā nipeturbhayaviklavāḥ | As the great soul, the indra (king) of demons, hiraṇyakaśipu, shook the earth, great serpents, terrified by fear, ran out from the mountains. viṣajvālākulairvaktrairvimuṣchanto hutāśanam ||3-46-37 chatuḥśīrṣāḥ paṣchaśīrṣāḥ saptaśīrṣāścha pannagāḥ | The four headed, five headed as well as seven headed serpents were emitting poisonous flames from their mouths and were spitting fire. vāsukistakṣakaścaiva karkoṭakadhanaṣjayau ||3-46-38 elāpatraścha kālīyo mahāpadmaścha vīryavān | vāsuki, takṣaka as well as karkoṭaka, dhanaṣjaya, elāpatra and kāliya and the valiant mahāpadma, sahasraśīrṣadhṛṅnāgo hematāladhvajaḥ prabhuḥ ||3-46-39 śeṣo'nanto mahīpālo duṣprakampaḥ prakampitaḥ | The serpent with thousand heads, the lord serpent, having the golden tāla as his flag, the great serpent śeṣa, the serpent having no end, the one who protects the earth, the one who can not be shaken, was also shaken (by hiraṇyakaśipu). dīptānyantarjalasthāni pṛthivīdharaṇāni ca ||3-46-40 tadā kruddhena daityena kampitāni samantataḥ | Then those who carry the earth, the mountains, those holding water in them, the bright mountains, were also shaken all over by the angry demon, hiraṇyakaśipu. pātālatalacāriṇyo nāgatejodharāḥ śivāḥ ||3-46-41 Apashcha sahasā kruddhā duṣprakampyarasāḥ ś ubhāḥ | The auspicious water body, which move in the netherworld and which carries the splendour of serpents, which is difficult to shake, also became angry all of a sudden. nadī bhāgīrathī caiva sarayūḥ kauśikī tathā ||3-46-42 The river bhāgīrathi and also sarayu as well as kauśikī, yamunā caiva kāverī kṛṣṇā veṇā tathaiva ca | suveṇā ca mahābhāgā nadī godāvarī tathā ||3-46-43 yamunā and also kāverī, kṛṣṇā, veṇā as well as suveṇā, the fortunate river godāvarī, carmaṇvatī ca sindhushcha tathā nadanadīpatiḥ | mekalaprabhavashcaiva śoṇo maṇinibhodakaḥ ||3-46-44 carmaṇvatī and also sindhu as well as the lord of rivers and streams (the ocean), the river which starts from the mountain mekala and the river shone having water as pure as a jewel, susrotā narmadā caiva tathā vetravatī nadī | gomatī gokulākīrṇā tathā pūrṇā sarasvatī ||3-46-45 the river narmadā having a good source (of water), the river vetravati, the river gomatī full of many stations of cows (on its banks) and also the full river sarasvatī, mahī kālanadī caiva tamasā puṇyavāhinī | sitā chekṣumatī caiva devikā ca mahānadī ||3-46-46 the rivers mahī, kālanadī and also the river tamasā with holy water, sitā, chekṣumatī, also the rivers devikā and also mahānadī, jambūdvīpaṁ ratnavantaṁ sarvaratnopaśobhitaṁ | suvarṇakūṭakaṁ caiva suvarṇākaramaṇḍitam ||3-46-47 the island jambū with full of jewels, dazzling with all kinds of jewels, the mountain suvarṇakūṭakaṁ, decorated with gold - all these were shaken by the demon hiraṇyakaśipu. mahānadaścha lohityaḥ śailakānanaśobhitaḥ | pattanaṁ kauśikāraṇyaṁ draviḍaṁ rajatākaram ||3-46-48 The great river lohitya decorated with mountains and forests, the city named kauśikāraṇya, the place draviḍaṁ, full of silver, māgadhāṁścha mahāgrāmānaṅgānvaṅgāṁstathaiva ca | suhmānmallānvidehāṁścha mālavānkāśikosalān ||3-46-49 the great land of māgadha as well as the lands of aṅga and vaṅga, suhma, malla, videha and also the lands of māLava, kāśi and kosala, bhuvanaṁ vainateyasya suvarṇasya ca kaṁpitam | kailāsaśikharākāraṁ yatkṛtaṁ viśvakarmaṇā ||3-46-50 and also the land of the son of vinatā, the one having golden colour (garuḍa) were shaken by hiraṇyakaśipu. The mountain made by viśvakarma, in the form of the peak of the mountain kailāsa, raktatoyo bhīmavego lauhityo nāma sāgaraḥ | śubhaḥ pāṇḍurameghābhaḥ kṣirodaścaiva sāgaraḥ ||3-46-51 the ocean named lauhitya having water with the colour of blood, moving with high speed, the milk ocean having water coloured like white clouds, udayashcaiva rājendra ucchritaḥ shatayojanam | suparṇavedikaḥ śrīmannāgapakṣiniṣevitaḥ ||3-46-52 and the mountain udaya, having a height of one hundred yojana, O the indra of kings (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued), the one having an auspicious golden stage, served by serpents and birds, bhrājamāno'rkasadṛśairjātarūpamayairdrumaiḥ | śālaistālaistamālaiścha karṇikābhiścha puṣpitaiḥ ||3-46-53 the mountains with flowering trees, sal (Vatica Robusta, śāla), palmyra (Borassus Flabelliformis, tāla), Xanthochymus Pictorius (white blossomed, tamāla) and Pterospermum Acerifolium (karṇikāra), fully golden and sparkling like the sun, ayomukhashcha vipulaḥ sarvato dhātumaṇḍitaḥ | tamālavanagandhaścha parvato malayaḥ śubhaḥ ||3-46-54 the huge mountain ayomukha, decorated with all kinds of elements, the auspicious mountain malaya, full of the fragrance of the forests of Xanthochymus Pictorius (white blossomed, tamāla) surāṣṭrāścha subāhlīkāḥ śūrābhīrāstathaiva ca | bhojāḥ pāṇḍyāścha vaṅgāścha kaliṅgāstāmraliptakāḥ ||3-46-55 the lands of surāṣṭra, subāhlīka, śūra and ābhīra as well as bhoja, pāṇḍya, vaṅga, kaliṅga and tāmraliptaka, tathaivāndhrāścha puṇḍrāścha vāmacūḍāḥ sakeralāḥ | kśobhitāstena daityena sadevāḥ sāpsarogaṇāḥ ||3-46-56 and also the lands of Andhra, puṇḍra, vāmacūḍa and kerala were agitated by the demon (hiraṇyakaśipu) along with the groups of deva--s and the divine women. agastibhuvanaṁ caiva yadagamyaṁ purā kṛtam | siddhacāraṇasaṅghaiścha sevitaṁ sumanoharam ||3-46-57 The world of agastya, where no one can go, which was created long ago, the mind stealing (beautiful) world, served by groups of siddha-s and cāraṇa-s, vicitranāgavihagaṁ supuṣpitalatādrumam | jātarūpamayaiḥ śṛṅgairapsarogaṇasevitam ||3-46-58 having strange serpents and birds and flowering creepers and trees, having peaks of gold, served by the groups of divine women (was also shaken by the demon). giriḥ puṣpatakaścaiva lakṣmīvānpriyadarśanaḥ | utthitaḥ sāgaraṁ bhitvā vayasyaścandrasūryayoḥ ||3-46-59 The mountain named puṣpataka, the wealthy mountain, dear to see, which rose up, splitting the sea, as a companion of the moon and the sun, rarāja sumahāśṛṅgairgaganaṁ vilikhanniva | suryacandrāṁśusaṅkāśaiḥ sāgarāmbusamāvṛtaḥ ||3-46-60 sparkled with its great peaks, touching the sky. The peaks shone with the rays of the sun and the moon, surrounded by the waters of the ocean (was also shaken by the demon). vidyudvānparvataḥ śrīmānāyātaḥ shatayojanam | vidyutāṁ yatra sampātā nipātyante nagottame ||3-46-61 The auspicious mountain vidyudvān, one hundred yojana high - On this mountain which is best among mountains, the lightning from the sky falls (was also shaken by the demon). ṛṣabhaḥ parvatashcaiva śrīmānṛṣabhasaṁsthitaḥ | kuṣjaraḥ parvatashcaiva yatrāgastyagṛhaṁ mahat ||3-46-62 The mountain ṛṣabha, where the auspicious ṛṣabha lives, the mountain kuṣjara where the great residence of the sage agastya is located, viśākharathyā durdharṣā sarpāṇāmālayā purī | tathā bhogavatī cāpi daityendreṇābhikaṁpitā ||3-46-63 the city named viśākharatya, which can not be conquered, the residence of serpents, as well as the city bhogavati were shaken by the indra (king) of demons, (hiraṇyakaśipu). mahāmeghagiriścaiva pāriyātraścha parvataḥ | cakravāṁstu giriḥ śreṣṭho vārāhaścaiva parvataḥ ||3-46-64 the mountain mahāmegha, the mountain pāriyātra, the mountain cakravān and the best mountain varāha, prāgjyotiṣapuraṁ caiva jātarūpamayaṁ śubham | yasminvasati duṣṭātmā narako nāma dānavaḥ ||3-46-65 the auspicious and golden city of prāgjyotiṣapuraṁ, where the wicked soul named naraka, the demon lives, merushcha parvataśreṣṭho meghagambhīraniḥsvanaḥ | ṣaṣṭiṁ tatra sahasrāṇi parvatānāṁ viśāṁpate ||3-46-66 the best among the mountains, meru where the great clouds thunder, O the lord of earth! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) which has sixty thousand mountains, taruṇādityasaṅkāśo mahendrashcha mahāgiriḥ | devāvāsaḥ śubhaḥ puṇyo girirājo divaṁ gataḥ ||3-46-67 the great mountain mahendra, which shines like the young (rising) sun, the auspicious, holy, king of mountains, rising up to the heaven, hemaśṛṅgo mahāśailastathā meghasakho giriḥ | kailāsaścāpi duṣkampo dānavendreṇa kampitaḥ ||3-46-68 the great mountain hemaśṛṅga, also the mountain meghasakha, the mountain kailāsa which is difficult to shake, the indra of demons, hiraṇyakaśipu, shook. yakṣarākṣasagandharvairnityaṁ sevitakandaraḥ | śrīmānmanoharaścaiva nityaṁ puṣpitapādapaḥ |3-46-69 The mountain with caves where yakṣa-s, rākṣasa-s and gandharva-s live, the auspicious, beautiful mountain with ever-flowering trees, hemapuṣkarasaṣchannaṁ tena vaikhānasaṁ saraḥ | kampitaṁ mānasaṁ caiva rājahaṁsairniṣevitam ||3-46-70 the lake vaikhānasa, covered by golden lotuses and also the lake mānasam, served by swans (rājahaṁsa), was shaken by the demon (hiraṇyakaśipu). viśṛṅgaḥ parvatashcaiva kumārī ca saridvarā | tuṣārachayasaṅkāśo mandarashcaiva parvataḥ ||3-46-71 The mountain viśṛṇga, also the best among the rivers kumārī and also the mountain mandara, appearing white like snow, uśīrabhījaścha girī rudropasthastathādrirāṭ | prajāpateścha nilayastathā puṣkaraparvataḥ ||3-46-72 the mountain uśīrabhīja, the king of mountains rudropastha, and also the residence of ptajāpati, the mountain puṣkara, devāvṛtparvataścaiva tathā vai vāluko giriḥ | krauṣchaḥ saptarṣiśailaścha dhūmavarṇaścha parvataḥ ||3-46-73 the mountain devāvṛt and also the mountain vāluka, the mountain krauṣcha, the mountain saptarṣi, the mountain dhūmavarṇa, ete cānye ca girayo deśā janapadāstathā | nadyashcha sāgarāścaiva dānavendreṇa kampitāḥ ||3-46-74 all these and other mountains, nations and communities, rivers and oceans were shaken by the king (indra) of demons. kapilashcha mahīputro vyāghrākṣaścaiva kampitaḥ | khecarāścha niśāputrāḥ pātālatalavāsinaḥ ||3-46-75 The son of earth, kapila and vyāghrākṣa were shaken by the demon.
