Parva 3 Chapter 47: hiraṇyakaśiporvadho brahmakṛtā nṛsiṁhastutiścha - hiraṇyakaśipu killed and brahma's praise of narasimha

vaiśampāyana uvāca tatrādityāścha sādhyāścha vishve ca marutastathā | rudrā devā mahātmāno vasavashcha mahābalāḥ ||3-47-1

Translation

vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) There the āditya-s, sādhya-s, the lords of the universe and also the marut-s, the rudra-s, the deva-s, the great souls, the highly powerful vasus, āgamya te mṛgendrasya sakāśaṁ sūryavarchasaḥ | ūcuḥ saṁtrastamanaso devā lokakṣayārditāḥ ||3-47-2 all the deva-s, terrified and oppressed by the decline of the world, reached near the indra (king) of animals (man- lion), having the splendor of the sun and said: jahi deva diteḥ putraṁ dānavaṁ lokanāśanam | durvṛttamasadācāraṁ saha sarvairmahāsuraiḥ ||3-47-3 O lord! Kill the demon, the son of diti, the destroyer of the world, the one whose conduct is wrong and who does wrong things, along with all the great demons. tvaṁ hyeṣāmantakṛnnānyo daityānāṁ daityanāśana | tannāśaya hitārthāya lokānāṁ svasti vai kuru ||3-47-4 O the destroyer of demons! You are the destroyer of these demons. There is no one else. Hence destroy them for the benefit and good of the beings of the world. tvaṁ guruḥ sarvalokānāṁ tvamindrastvaṁ pitāmahaḥ | ṛte tvadanyaccharaṇaṁ na bhūtaṁ na bhavishyati ||3-47-5 You are the preceptor of all the worlds. You are the indra and you are the great grandfather. Truly, there is no refuge other than you in the present or past and there will be no one in the future. tacchrutvā vacanaṁ devo devānāmādisaṁbhavaḥ | nanāda sumahānādamatigambhīraniḥsvanam ||3-47-6 (O janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) Hearing these words, the lord, the one who was born among the gods in the beginning, roared with a deep and great sound. pāṭitānyasurendrāṇāṁ mṛgendreṇa mahātmanā | siṁhanādena mahatā hṛdayāni manāṁsi ca ||3-47-7 That great soul, the indra (king) of animals, with the loud roar of lion made the hearts and minds of those demon indra-s (kings) fall. gaṇaḥ krodhavasho nāma kālakeyastathā paraḥ | vegashcha vaigaleyashcha saimhikeyashcha vīryavān ||3-47-8 The groups of demons named krodhavasha and another group of demons kālakeya and the demons vega, vaigaleya and the valiant demons saimhikeya, saṁhrādīyo mahānādo mahāvegastathā paraḥ | kapilashcha mahīputro vyāghrākṣaḥ kṣitikampanaḥ ||3-47-9 the demons saṁhrādīya, mahānāda, mahāvega, kapila, mahīputra, vyāghrākṣa, kṣitikampana, khecarāścha niśāputrāḥ pātālatalacāriṇaḥ | gaṇastathāparo raudro meghanādo'ṅkuśāyudhaḥ ||3-47-10 the demons who travel through the sky, the sons of night, the demons who move in the netherworld, the other groups of terrible demons, meghanāda, aṅkuśāyudha, Urdhvago bhīmavegaścha bhīmakarmārkalocanaḥ | vajrī śūlī karālaścha hiranyakaśipustataḥ ||3-47-11 the demons Urdhvavega, bhīmavega, bhīmakarma, arkalocanaḥ, vajri, śūli, karāla and also hiraṇyakaśipu himself, jīmūtaghanasaṅkāśo jīmūta iva vegavān | jīmūtaghanasaṁnādo jīmūtasadṛśadyutiḥ ||3-47-12 who had a form like a dense cloud, who was fast like a cloud, who roared like a cloud, who was sparkling like a cloud, dṛptairdaityagaṇaistuṣṭo mṛgendreṇa mahātmanā | devārirditijo dṛpto nṛsiṁhaṁ samupādravat ||3-47-13 the enemy of deva-s, the one born to diti, the proud demon, hiraṇyakaśipu ran towards the man-lion and reached the great soul, the indra (king) of animals, making the group of proud demons happy. samutpatya tatastīkṣṇairmṛgendreṇa mahānakhaiḥ | tatroṅkārasahāyena vidārya nihato yudhi ||3-47-14 The indra (king) of animals, jumping forward, killed hiraṇyakaśipu in the battle by tearing (his body) with his great nails with the help of oṅkāra. mahī ca lokashcha śaśī nabhashcha grahāścha sūryaścha dishashcha sarvāḥ | nadyashcha śailāścha mahārṇavāścha gatāḥ prakāśaṁ ditiputranāśāt ||3-47-15 With the destruction of the son of diti (hiraṇyakaśipu), the earth, the world, moon, sky, planets, sun, all the directions, rivers, mountains as well as the great oceans became lighted up. tataḥ pramuditā devā ṛṣayaścha tapodhanāḥ | tuṣṭuvurvividhaiḥ stotrairādidevaṁ sanātanam ||3-47-16 Then the deva-s, sages having the wealth of penance became happy. They made the eternal lord happy by praising him with many hymns. devā ūcuḥ yattvayā vihitaṁ deva nārasiṁhamidaṁ vapuḥ | etadevārchayiṣyanti parāvaravido janāḥ | deva-s said: O lord ! This body of man-lion, taken by you will be worshipped by the wise people who know about the past and present (cause and effect). mṛgendratvaṁ ca lokeṣu sarvasattveṣu vā vibho ||3-47-17 In all the worlds, the state of being the indra of animals (man-lion), O lord! will be praised by all the beings. gāyanti tvāṁ ca munayo mṛgendra iti nityaśaḥ | tvatprasādātsvakaṁ sthānaṁ pratipannāḥ sma vai vibho ||3-47-18 The sages will always sing about you as the man-lion, the indra (king) of animals. O lord! With your pleasure we have regained our own places. evamukto devasaṅghairnarasiṁho mahāmanāḥ | brahmā ca paramaprīto viṣṇoḥ stotramudairayat ||3-47-19 (vaiśampāyana continued: O janamejaya!) The man-lion, who was praised thus by the groups of deva-s was highly pleased. brahma became highly pleased and pronounced a hymn of viṣṇu. brahmovāca bhavānakṣaramavyaktamacintyaṁ guhyamuttamam | kūṭasthamakṛtaṁ kartṛ sanātanamanāmayam ||3-47-20 brahma said: O lord ! you are without decline, you are un-manifested, you can not be imagined, you are mysterious and the best, you are the highest, unchangeable, you have no creator, you are the creator, you are the eternal. You are not pernicious. sāṅkhyayoge ca yā buddhistattvārthapariniṣṭhitā | tāṁ bhavāndeva vidyātmā puruṣaḥ śāśvato dhruvaḥ ||3-47-21 You are the puruṣa, eternal and fixed. You are the knowledgeable soul who knows about the intellect fixed in the sāṅkhyayoga installed in the meaning of principles. tvaṁ vyaktashcha tathāvyaktastvattaḥ sarvamidaṁ jagat | bhavanmayā vayaṁ deva bhavānātmā bhavānprabhuḥ ||3-47-22 You are the manifested as well as the unmanifested. You are this entire universe. O lord! We are you. You are the soul and you are the lord. caturvibhaktamūrtistvaṁ sarvalokavibhurguruḥ | caturyugasahasreṇa sarvalokāntakāntakaḥ ||3-47-23 You are with a body, divided in four parts. You are the lord and preceptor of all the words. With thousands of four eras, you are the destroyer of the destroyer of all worlds. [ caturdevaścaturhotraścaturātmā sanātanaḥ ] You are the four deva-s, you are the four hotra-s, you are the four souls and you are the eternal. pratiṣṭhā sarvabhūtānāmanantabalapauruṣaḥ | kapilaprabhṛtīnāṁ ca yatīnāṁ paramā gatiḥ ||3-47-24 You are the refuge of all beings. You are with unending strength and power. You are the ultimate destination of the sages such as kapila. anādimadhyanidhanaḥ sarvātmā puruṣottamaḥ | sraṣṭā tvaṁ tvaṁ ca saṁhartā tvameko lokabhāvanaḥ ||3-47-25 You are the one who do not have beginning, middle and the end. You are the soul of all (in the universe). You are the best among men. You are the creator, you are the destroyer. You are the only one who is concerned with the welfare of people. bhavānbrahmā ca rudrashcha mahendro varuṇo yamaḥ | bhavānkartā vikartā ca lokānāṁ prabhuravyayaḥ ||3-47-26 You are brahma and also rudra, the great indra, varuṇa and yama. You are the doer, the un-doer, also the lord of the world who does not have any decline. parāṁ ca siddhiṁ paramaṁ ca devaṁ paraṁ ca mantraṁ paramaṁ manashcha | paraṁ ca dharmaṁ paramaṁ yashashcha tvāmāhuragryaṁ puruṣaṁ purāṇam ||3-47-27 You are the highest skill, the most superior deva, the superior mantra and also the superior mind, the highest dharma, the highest fame and you are the foremost person, the puruṣa, celebrated in the purāṇas. paraṁ ca satyaṁ paramaṁ havishcha paraṁ pavitraṁ paramaṁ ca mārgam | paraṁ ca hotraṁ paramaṁ ca yajṣaṁ tvāmāhuragryaṁ puruṣaṁ purāṇam ||3-47-28 You are the highest truth, highest oblation, highest and most holy way, highest oblation to the fire and the highest sacrifice and you are the foremost person, the puruṣa celebrated in the purāṇas. paraṁ śarīraṁ paramaṁ ca dhāma paraṁ ca yogaṁ paramāṁ ca vāṇīm | paraṁ rahasyaṁ paramāṁ gatiṁ ca tvāmāhuragryaṁ puruṣaṁ purāṇam ||3-47-29 You are the superior body, foremost residence, foremost yoga and highest speech, highest secret and foremost destination and you are the foremost person, the puruṣa celebrated in the purāṇas. paraṁ parasyāpi paraṁ ca yatparaṁ paraṁ parasyāpi paraṁ ca devam | paraṁ parasyāpi paraṁ prabhuṁ ca tvāmāhuragryaṁ puruṣaṁ purāṇam ||3-47-30 You are the highest of the foremost, you are the highest of the deva-s, highest of the lords and you are the foremost person, the puruṣa celebrated in the purāṇas. paraṁ parasyāpi paraṁ pradhānaṁ paraṁ parasyāpi paraṁ ca tattvaṁ | paraṁ parasyāpi paraṁ ca dhātā tvāmāhuragryaṁ puruṣaṁ purāṇam ||3-47-31 You are the most important of the highest, you are the highest of the principles, you are the highest of the creators and you are the foremost person, the puruṣa celebrated in the purāṇas. paraṁ parasyāpi paraṁ rahasyaṁ param parasyāpi paraṁ paraṁ yat | paraṁ parasyāpi paraṁ tapo ya- ttvāmāhuragryaṁ puruṣaṁ purāṇam ||3-47-32 You are the highest of the secrets, you are the highest of the highest, you are the highest penance and you are the foremost person, the puruṣa celebrated in the purāṇas. paraṁ parasyāpi paraṁ parāyaṇaṁ paraṁ ca guhyaṁ ca paraṁ ca dhāma | paraṁ ca yogaṁ paramaṁ prabhutvaṁ tvāmāhuragryaṁ puruṣaṁ purāṇam ||3-47-33 You are the highest of all refuges, highest of the residences, highest lordships and you are the foremost person, the puruṣa celebrated in the purāṇas. vaiśampāyana uvāca evamuktvā sa bhagavānsarvalokapitāmahaḥ | stutvā nārāyaṇaṁ devaṁ brahmalokaṁ gataḥ prabhuḥ ||3-47-34 vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) The lord (narasiṁha) was praised thus by the grandfather of all the worlds. Praising the lord nārāyaṇa (viṣṇu), lord brahma went to the world of brahma. tato nadatsu tūryeṣu nṛtyantīṣvapsaraḥsu ca | kṣīrodasyottaraṁ kūlaṁ jagāma prabhurīśvaraḥ ||3-47-35 As the musical instruments played and as the divine women danced, the lord, the God (the man-lion, viṣṇu) went to the northern bank of the milky ocean. nārasiṁhīṁ tanuṁ tyaktvā sthāpayitvā ca tadvapuḥ | paurāṇaṁ rūpamāsthāya yayau sa garuḍadhvajaḥ ||3-47-36 Leaving the body of the man-lion and installing the body (at the proper place) taking his original form, the lord having garuḍa on his flag went away. aṣṭacakreṇa yānena bhūtiyuktena śobhinā | avyaktaḥ prakṛtirdevaḥ saṁsthānamagamatprabhuḥ ||3-47-37 The Lord, the one who is not manifested, the Lord of the nature went to his place in the carriage having eight wheels which sparkle due to splendor.
