Parva 3 Chapter 49: trailokyavijayārthaṁ balerudyogaḥ, mayasya yuddhābhigamanaṁ ca - asura-s under bali mobilise for war with deva-s

vaiśampāyana said: Hearing the words spoken by those with great intellect, the highly powerful bali became pleased in his mind. He ordered the millions of demons: Now, let us conquer all the three worlds. tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā balervairochanasya tu | udyogaṁ paramaṁ cakrurdānavā yuddhadurmadāḥ ||3-49-2 Hearing the words of bali, the son of virochana, there, the sons of danu (demons), proud with the false feeling of victory in battle, began to assemble the armies. mahāpadmo nikumbhashcha kumbhakarṇaścha vīryavan | kāṣchanākṣaḥ kapiskandho mainākaḥ kṣitikampanaḥ ||3-49-3 mahāpadma, nikumbha, the valiant kumbhakarṇa, kāṣchanākṣa, kapiskandha, maināka, kṣitikampana, śitakeshordhvavaktrashcha vajranābhaḥ śikhī jaṭī | sahasrabāhurvikaṭo vyāghrākṣaḥ priyadarśanaḥ ||3-49-4 those demons with white hairs and mouth pointing up, vajranābha, shikhi, jaṭi, sahasrabāhu (having thousand arms), vikaṭa, vyāghrākṣa, priyadarshana, ekākṣa ekapānmuṇḍo vidyudakṣaścaturbhujaḥ | gajodaro gajaśirā gajaskandho gajekṣaṇaḥ ||3-49-5 ekakṣa (one eyed demon), ekapāt, demon with shaved head, vidyudakṣa, caturbhuja (four-armed), gajodara, gajashira, gajekṣaṇa, aṣṭadaṁṣṭraścaturvaktro meghanādī jalaṁdharaḥ | karālo jvālajihvāsyaḥ śatāṅgaḥ śatalocanaḥ ||3-49-6 aṣṭadaṁṣṭra (demon with eight teeth), caturvaktra (with four mouths), maghanādi (with voice like thundering cloud), jalaṁdharah (one who holds water), karāla, jvālajihvāsyah (having flaming tongue), śatāṅga (having hundred limbs), shatalocana (having hundred eyes), sahasrapādaḥ sumukhaḥ kṛṣṇaścaiva mahāsuraḥ | raṇotkaṭo dānapatiḥ śailakampī kulākuliḥ ||3-49-7 sahasrapāda (one with hundred feet), sumukhaḥ, the great black coloured demon (kṛṣṇa), raṇotkaṭa, dānapati, shailakampi (one who shakes the rocks), kulākuli, samudro rabhasaśchaṇḍo dhūmraścaiva mahāsuraḥ | gotrajo gokṣuro raudro godantaḥ svastiko dhruvaḥ ||3-49-8 samudra, rabhasa, chaṇḍa, the great demon dhūmra, gotraja, gokṣura, raudra, godanta (one with teeth of cow), svastika and dhruva, māṁsalo māṁsabhakṣaścha vegavānketumāṣchibiḥ | paṅkadigdhaśarīraścha bṛhatkīrtirmahāhanuḥ ||3-49-9 māṁsala, maṁsabhakṣa (who eats meat), vegavān, ketumān, shibi, paṅkadigdhaśarīra (whose body is smeared with dirt), bṛhatkīrti, mahāhanu (one having a great cheek), samaprabho vikumbhāṇḍo virūpākṣo mahodaraḥ | śvetaśīrṣaścandrahanuścandrahā candratāpanaḥ ||3-49-10 samaprabha, vikumbhāṇḍa, virūpākṣa (with distorted eye), mahodara (having a huge belly), śvetaśīrṣa (white head), candrahanu, candraha (slayer of moon), candratāpana (who tortures the moon), vikṣaro dīrghabāhuścha madyapo mārutāśanaḥ | tālajaṁgho mahābhāgaḥ sarabhaḥ śalabhaḥ krathaḥ ||3-49-11 vikṣara, dīrghabāhu, madyapa, mārutāśana (who eats air), tālajaṁgha, mahābhāga, sarabha, shalabha, kratha, samudramathano nādī vitatashcha mahābalaḥ | pralambo narako vyālī dhenukaḥ kālalocanaḥ ||3-49-12 samudramathana, nādī, vitata, mahābala, pralamba, naraka, vyāli, dhenuka, kālalocana, variṣṭhaścha gariṣṭhaścha bhūtalomā tathā vidhuḥ | duṣprasādaḥ kirītī ca sūcīvaktro mahāsuraḥ ||3-49-13 variṣṭha, gariṣṭha, bhūtaloma, vidhu, duṣprasāda, kirīti, the great demon sūchivaktra, subāhuḥ kaṣjabāhuścha karaṇaḥ kalaśodaraḥ | somapo devayājī ca pravaro vīramardanaḥ ||3-49-14 subāhu, kaṣjabāhu, karaṇa, kalashodara, somapa, devayāji, pravara, vīramardana, supathaḥ khaṇḍamuktiścha śikhinetraḥ śikhidhvajaḥ | yathāsmṛti mayā proktā marīcheḥ kīrtivardhanāḥ ||3-49-15 supatha, khaṇḍamukti, shikhinetra, shikhidvaja, who enhance the fame of the race of marichi - I named the demons as I remember. ete cānye ca bahavo nānābhūṣaṇabhūṣitāḥ | rathaughairbahusāhasrairyayuryoddhumariṁdamāḥ ||3-49-16 These as well as many other demons, the oppressors of enemies, decorated with varieties of ornaments along with many thousands of groups of chariots, proceeded for battle. divyāmbaradharā daityā divyamālyānulepanāḥ | divyaishcha kavacairnaddhā divyaiśchaivocchritairdhvajaiḥ ||3-9-17 The sons of diti (demons) were wearing divine clothes, smeared with divine pastes, protected by divine shields and were having divine flags flying high. divyāyudhadharā daityā garjamānā yathāmbudāḥ | bṛhadbhī rathaghoṣaiścha cālayanto vasuṁdharām ||3-49-18 The sons of diti (demons) were holding divine weapons and roaring as if they were water bearing clouds. They were riding on the earth with loud chariot sounds. mahābalā divyabalāstradhāriṇo bhujaṅgabhogapratimairmahābhujaiḥ | sudurjayā daityavṛṣāḥ surārayo ditipriyā lohitalohitekṣaṇāḥ ||3-49-19 The sons of diti were with great arms, holding weapons having divine power, having great arms like serpents with decorations. The bulls of demons, difficult to be conquered, the enemies of deva-s, dear to diti were having eyes blood-red like copper. te jagmurarkajvalanendravīryā mahendravajrāśanitulyavegāḥ | vivṛttadaṁṣṭrā haridhūmrakeśā vivardhamānāḥ śaradīva meghāḥ ||3-49-20 The valiant demons with eyes blazing like sun, equal in speed to the lightning vajra of the great indra, with protruding fangs, with green hair like smoke, were growing like clouds of the autumn season. sahasrabāhurbāṇaścha baleḥ putro mahābalaḥ | rathātirathakoṭyā vai sannahyata mahābala ||3-49-21 The highly powerful son of bali, the powerful bāṇa having thousand arms made millions of chariots ready (for battle). sarve māyādharā daityāḥ sarve divyāstrayodhinaḥ | sarve madabalotsiktā sarve labdhavarāḥ purā ||3-49-22 All the sons of diti were proficient in illusion. All were capable of fighting with divine weapons. All were proud with power. All had obtained boons earlier. sarve kāṣchanaśailābhāḥ pītakauśeyavāsasaḥ | kirīṭoṣṇīṣamukuṭā divyabhūṣaṇabhūṣitāḥ ||3-49-23 All were splendorous like golden mountains. All were wearing yellow silk clothes. All were wearing crowns, turbans and headgears decorated with divine ornaments. hiraṇyakavacāḥ sarve hiraṇyadhvajaketavaḥ | syandanasthā vyarājanta śāradā iva khe grahāḥ ||3-49-24 All were wearing golden shields. All were having golden flags and flagstaffs. They sparkled in the chariots like the planets sparkle in the autumn sky. tāpanīyairvarairniṣkairanalajvalitaprabhaiḥ | hemaparvataśṛṅgasthāḥ puṣpitā iva kiṁśukāḥ ||3-49-25 They were wearing golden ornaments on the neck and breast which were blazing like fire, like the flowering Butea Frondosa trees (kiṁśuka) on the peaks of golden mountains. teṣāṁ madhyagato bāṇaḥ prāvṛṣīvotthito ghanaḥ | sthitaḥ śaktigadāpāṇistrinalvapratime rathe ||3-49-26 Among them, bāṇa stood high like a rain bearing cloud, holding the spear shakti and mace in his hands, in his large chariot, having a circumference of three furlongs. vicitrāśvadhvajayuge citrabhaktivirājite | gadāparighasaṁpūrṇe hemajālavibhūṣite ||3-49-27 The chariot was yoked with strange horses and flagstaff. It sparkled with strange decorations. It was complete with mace and bludgeons and decorated with golden items. anvīyamāno ditijairvālakhilyairivāṁśumān | nānāpraharaṇairghoraistīkṣṇadaṁṣṭrairivoragaiḥ ||3-49-28 As sun is surrounded by vālakhilya-s (thumb sized sages), bāṇa was surrounded by the sons of diti, terrible, having sharp fangs like serpents, who were holding varieties of weapons. paṣcha tasya mahāvīryā dānavā yuddhadurmadāḥ | rarakṣū rathamavyagrā vyāditāsyā bhayāvahāḥ ||3-49-29 His chariot was protected by five highly valiant sons of danu (demons), fearful, who were with false pride of victory in battle, who were undisturbed and who had wide open mouths. subāhurmeghanādaścha bhīmagarbhaścha vīryavān | tathā kanakamūrdhā ca vegavānketumāniti ||3-49-30 They were subāhu, meghanāda, the valiant bhīmagarbha, kanakamūrdha and the speeding ketumān. kanakarajatabhakticitrapārśve patagapatipratime rathe sthito'bhūt | jaladaninadatulyanemighoṣe suragaṇasainyavadhāya dānavendraḥ ||3-49-31 The indra (king) of demons, bāṇa stood in the chariot, which was like the king of the birds, having strange golden and silver lines. anāyuṣāyāḥ putrastu balo nāma mahāsuraḥ | vṛtaḥ śatasahasreṇa rathānāṁ bhīmavarchasām ||3-49-32 The son of anāyuṣa, the great demon called bala, was having a hundred thousand chariots with huge body. yuktamṛkṣasahasreṇa rathamāruhya vīryavān | nīlāyasamayaṁ ghoraṁ vāyasāṅkaṁ sudurjayaṁ ||3-49-33 The valiant demon mounted on a chariot, yoked with one thousand bears, a terrible chariot of iron, which is difficult to conquer and which has a crow on the flag. nīlāmbaradharaḥ śrīmānvaidūryācalasannibhaḥ | mahatā rathavegena prayayau dānavastadā ||3-49-34 The auspicious son of danu (demon) wearing blue clothes, shining and huge like a mountain of diamonds, then proceeded with a high speed of his chariot. tatraikārṇavasaṅkāśe sainyamadhye vyarājata | prabhātasamaye śrīmansamudrastha ivāṁśumān ||3-49-35 There, among the army, large like the one ocean, he sparkled like the sun who reaches the sea in the morning time. sutaptajāmbūnadatulyavarchasā niśākarākārataḍidguṇākaraḥ | kirīṭamukhyena vibhāti śobhinā yathāgiriḥ śṛṅgavareṇa bhāsvatā ||3-49-36 The demon, having the qualities of niśākara (moon), sparkled with the best of crowns, with the splendor of molten gold, like a mountain with the best of the peaks shines (on the earth). ṣaṣṭī rathasahasrāṇi namucherasurasya vai | kharayuktāni sarvāṇi meghatulyaravāṇi ca ||3-49-37 The demon namuchi had sixty thousand chariots. All were yoked with donkeys having colour equal to the clouds. nānāpraharaṇāḥ sarve sarve te citrayodhinaḥ | mahābhraghanasaṅkāśā vegavanto mahābalāḥ ||3-49-38 All the demons were capable of fighting with varieties of weapons. All were expert warriors. All were huge like great white clouds. All were highly powerful and having great speed. ratho vyāghrasahasreṇa yuktaḥ paramavegavān | namucherasurendrasya sarvaratnavibhūṣitaḥ ||3-49-39 The chariot of the (indra) king of demons, namuchi, was yoked with one thousand tigers, having high speed and decorated with all kinds of ornaments. śārdūlachihnaḥ shuśubhe tasya keturhiraṇmayaḥ | rathamadhye sureshasya madhyaṁdinaraviryathā ||3-49-40 The golden flag with tiger sparkled in the middle of the chariot of the lord of the demons, like the sun of mid day. sa bhīmavegaścha mahābalaścha pragṛhya cāpaṁ himavāniva sthitaḥ | nīlāmbaraḥ kāṣchanapaṭṭanaddho diśāgajo yadvadupetakakṣaḥ||3-49-41 That highly powerful demon, having great speed, stood (on the chariot) holding the bow like the mountain himavat, wearing blue clothes like a huge elephant of the directions, having a golden chain and a golden turban. kiṅkiṇījālanirghoṣaṁ tapanīyavibhūṣitam | sapatākadhvajopetaṁ sasaṁdhyamiva toyadam ||3-49-42 The chariot was having the sound of bells, decorated with gold, along with flag and flagstaff, like a rain bearing cloud in the evening sky, cakraiścaturbhiḥ saṁyuktamaṣṭanalvāyatāntaraṁ | hemajālākulaṁ dīptaṁ kālacakramivoditam ||3-49-43 having four wheels, with eight furlongs wide, full of golden ornaments, sparkling like the wheel of time, nānāyudhadharaṁ ghoraṁ vyāghracharmapariṣkṛtam | īhāmṛgagaṇākīrṇaṁ citrabhaktivirājitam ||3-49-44 having varieties of weapons, terrible, modified with tiger skin, along with groups of īhāmṛga, beautified with many colourful lines, tūṇīraśarasaṁpūrṇaṁ śaktitomarasaṅkulam | gadāmudgarasaṁbādhaṁ cāparatnavibhūṣitam ||3-49-45 complete with quiver full of arrows, along with the spear shakti and lances, maces and hammers, and a bow decorated with jewels, yuktamṛkṣasahasreṇa lambakesaravarchasā | rājatena vikīrṇena śobhitaṁ siṁhaketunā ||3-49-46 and yoked with one thousand bears having wide manes. The silver chariot dazzled with a flag having lion on it. sa tena shuśubhe daityo mayo māyāvisarpiṇā | ratharatne sthitaḥ śrīmānudayastha ivāṁśumān ||3-49-47 The son of diti (demon), maya, dazzled with that chariot which moved fast by illusion. The auspicious demon dazzled on the jewel among chariots like the rising morning sun. vimalarajatabinduśobhitāṅgaṁ maṇikanakojjvalacārubhakticitram | ayutaśatasahasramūrjitānāṁ maymanuyāti tadā mahārathānām ||3-49-48 With their limbs sparkling by pure silver dots, decorated with colourful lines, sparkling with jewels and gold, ten thousands of hundred thousand energetic demons, great chariot fighters accompanied the demon maya. iti śrīmahābhārate khileṣu harivaṁśe bhaviṣyaparvaṇi vāmanaprādurbhāve mayasya yuddhābhigamane ekonapaṣcāśattamo'dhyāyaḥ This is the forty-ninth chapter of bhaviṣyaparva, harivaṁśa, khila of mahābhārata, in the manifestation of vāmana, asura-s under bali mobilise for war with deva-s
