Parva 3 Chapter 50: śambarādidaityasannahanaṁ - mobilisation under shambara and others

vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) The great son of diti (demon), pulomā, mounted a terrible chariot of iron which appeared as hardened darkness, having a dark interior, capable of breaking the enemy's chariot. utkarṇaparvatākāraṁ lohajālāntarāntaram | nemighoṣeṇa mahatā kṣubhyantamiva sāgaram ||3-50-2 The chariot was like a huge mountain, with internal metallic frames, with great sounds of the wheel, like an agitated ocean, gadāparighanistriṁśaiḥ satomaraparaśvadhaiḥ | śaktimudgarasaṅkīrṇaṁ satoyamiva toyadam ||3-50-3 full of weapons such as maces, iron bludgeons, swords, lances, hatchets, spears (shakti) and hammers, like a rain cloud, full of water, rathamuṣṭraśasreṇa saṁyuktaṁ vāyuveginā | pulomā''ruhya yuddhāya prasthito yuddhadurmadaḥ ||3-50-4 pulomā, proud with false feeling of victory in battle, mounted the chariot yoked with thousands of camels having the speed of the wind and proceeded for the battle. ṣaṣṭī rathasahasrāṇi pulomānaṁ mahāratham | anvayuḥ sūryavarṇāni pradīptānīva tejasā ||3-50-5 Sixty thousand chariots, sparkling with splendor with the colour of sun, followed the chariot of the great chariot fighter pulomā. khadgadhvajena mahatā taptakāṣchanavarchasā | bhrājate rathamadhyasthaḥ parvatastha ivāṁśumān ||3-50-6 The demon pulomā sparkled in the chariot, having the splendor of molten gold and a flag with mark of sword, like the sun sparkling on a mountain. sucārucāmīkarapaṭṭanaddhāṁ mahāgadāṁ kālanibhāṁ mahābalaḥ | pragṛhya babhrāja sa shatrumadhye kārṣṇāyasīṁ keturivāsthitorvyām ||3-50-7 The highly powerful demon, holding a great mace of iron cladded with sparkling golden sheets, dazzled like the god of death, among the enemies like a high flying flag on the earth. hayagrīvastu balavānhayagrīvairmahāsuraiḥ | vṛtaḥ śatasahasreṇa rathānāṁ rathisattamaḥ ||3-50-8 The powerful hayagrīva along with the great demons hayagrīva, the best among chariot fighters, surrounded by one hundred thousand chariots, dharādharanibhākāraṁ sapatnānīkamardanam | syandanaṁ bhīmamāsthāya yuddhāyābhimukhaḥ sthitaḥ ||3-50-9 with a huge body like a mountain, the oppressor of the enemy's armies, mounted on a huge chariot, stood in the battle field, ready for fighting. śvetaśailapratīkāśaḥ śvetakuṇḍalabhūṣanaḥ | shuśubhe rathamadhyasthaḥ śvetaśṛṅga ivācalaḥ ||3-50-10 Sparkling like a white mountain, decorated by white ear rings, he dazzled in the chariot like a mountain having a white peak. mahatā saptaśīrṣeṇa shobhito nāgaketunā | vaiḍūryamaṇicitreṇa pravālāṅkuraśobhinā ||3-50-11 The chariot having a flag with a great seven headed serpent sparkled, decorated with jewels of cats eye gems and pearls. amitabalaparākramākṛtīnāṁ vararathināmanujagmurūrjitānām | asuragaṇaśatāni gacchamānaṁ tridaśagaṇā iva vāsavaṁ prayāntam ||3-50-12 He was followed by the best chariot fighters having unlimited strength, valiance and energy along with hundreds of the groups of demons, like the groups of deva-s accompany vāsava (indra). prahrādastu mahāprājṣaḥ sarvaśāstraviśāradaḥ | sarvamāyādharaḥ śrīmān yaṣṭākratuśatairapi ||3-50-13 prahrāda with great intellect, the expert of all knowledge, the holder of all kinds of illusions, auspicious, the one who has performed hundreds of sacrifices, samanahyata tejasvī pāvakārchiḥsamaprabhaḥ | rathānīkena mahatā durdināmbodanādinā ||3-50-14 the one with splendor, blazing with the splendor of flames of fire was ready with a great chariot, huge like a cloud, having sound like the rain cloud of a bad day, śūreṇāmitavīryeṇa hemakuṇḍaladhāriṇā | vṛto daityasahasreṇa devairiva pitāmahaḥ ||3-50-15 the one with valour, having unlimited valiance, wearing golden ear rings, surrounded by thousands of diti's sons (demons), as grandfather brahma is surrounded by devas. svavīryādagraṇīrdṛpto mattavāraṇavikramaḥ | surasainyasya sarvasya pratikṣobha iva sthitaḥ ||3-50-16 The one having pride due to his valiance, having valiance like an elephant in rut, stood in the battle field agitating all the armies of devas. svavīryeṇodadhestulyaḥ pradīptāgniriva jvalan | tejasā bhāskarākāraḥ kṣamayā pṛthivīsamaḥ ||3-50-17 The one who can not be equalled with valiance, blazing like fire flames, looking like the sun due to splendor, equal to earth in patience, tāladhvajena dīptena rathenātivirājata | taṁ yāntamanuyānti sma dānavāḥ śatasaṅghaśaḥ ||3-50-18 mounted on a chariot, sparkling with a flagstaff of the palmyra tree - the valiant demon was followed by hundreds of groups of demons. sarve hiranyakavacāḥ sarve ratnavibhūṣitāḥ | divyāṅgarāgābharaṇāḥ samareṣvanivartinaḥ ||3-50-19 All were wearing golden shields. All were decorated with jewels and wearing divine ornaments on their limbs. None of them ever retreated from battle. jāmbūnadavicitrāṅgā vaiḍūryavikṛtāṅgadāḥ | divyasyandanamadhyasthāḥ khasthā iva mahāgrahāḥ ||3-50-20 Their limbs were decorated with strange golden ornaments. They were sparkling with bracelets of cats eye gem on their arms. They were mounted on divine chariots like planets in the sky. ācāravāṁścaiva jitendriyashcha dharme rataḥ satyaparo'nasūyaḥ | sthito'gnitoyāmbudavāyukalpo rūpī yathā sarvaharaḥ kṛtāntaḥ ||3-50-21 The one who observed rituals, the one who conquered senses, the one who was fixed in dharma, the one who stayed in truth, the one not having envy, śambarastu mahāmāyo rathayūthapayūthapaḥ | āruroha rathaṁ divyaṁ sarvayuddhaviśāradaḥ ||3-50-22 shambara, the one with great illusion, the leader of groups of chariots, expert of all kinds of warfare, mounted on a divine chariot. lohitākṣo mahābāhuḥ prataptottamakuṇḍalaḥ | jīmūtaghanasaṅkāśo divyasraganulepanaḥ ||3-50-23 He was having blood red eyes, great arms, shining ear rings, like a huge water bearing cloud, wearing divine garland and smeared with divine pastes. vidyujjyotirnikāśena mukuṭenārkavarchasā | maṇiratnavicitreṇa vaiḍuryavaraśobhinā ||3-50-24 He sparkled like sun with his crown in the light of lightning, decorated with strange jewels and sparkling with cats eye gems. tapanīyena mahatā kavachena virājata | saṁdhyābhreṇeva saṣcchannaḥ srīmānastaśilocchayaḥ ||3-50-25 He sparkled with a great golden shield, like the auspicious asta parvata, covered with clouds of the evening sky. triṁśacchatasahasrāṇi daityānāṁ citrayodhinām | balināṁ kālakalpānāmanvayuḥ śambaraṁ tadā ||3-50-26 Thirty hundred thousand demons, experts fighters, powerful demons, terrible like the god of death, accompanied shambara then. yuktaṁ hayasahasreṇa śuklavarṇena rājatā | krauṣchadhvajena dīptena rathenāhavaśobhinā ||3-50-27 shambara was mounted on a chariot yoked with one thousand white coloured horses. The chariot sparkled with a flag staff of krauṣcha bird. vyāsaktavaiḍūryasuvarṇajālaṁ nānāvihaṅgairapi bhakticitram | vidyutprabhaṁ bhīmaravaṁ suvegaṁ rathaṁ samāruhya rarāja daityaḥ ||3-50-28 The demon, dazzled in the battle field, mounted on a chariot, decorated with cats eye gems, gold, strange pictures of many birds, splendorous like lightning, producing a loud sound and having high speed. iti śrīmābhārate khileṣu harivaṁśe bhaviṣyaparvaṇi vāmanaprādurbhāve śambarādidaityasannahane paṣcāśattamo'dhyāyaḥ Thus this is the fiftieth chapter of bhaviṣyaparva, harivamsha, khila of mahābharata, in the manifestation of vāmana, mobilisation under shambara and others
