vaiśampāyana uvāca
anuhrādaṣcha tatraiva daityaḥ paramadurjayaḥ |
hiraṇyakaśipoḥ putraḥ prayayau yuddhalālasaḥ ||3-51-1
Translation
vaiśampāyana said:
There was the demon anuhrāda, the son of hiraṇyakaśipu, most difficult to conquer, eagerly longing for battle, who also proceeded (to the battle field).
catuścakreṇa yānena trinalvapratimena tu |
yuktenāśvairmahāvīryaiḥ siṁhavaktrairajihmagaiḥ ||3-51-2
His chariot had four wheels, having twelve hundred hands (see nīlakaṇṭha commentary) circumference, yoked with highly valiant horses, having mouths similar to lions and with high speed.
bhīmagambīranādena nemighoṣeṇa vīryavān |
cālayanvasudhāṁ sarvāṁ saśailavanakānanām ||3-51-3
The valiant demon shook the entire earth along with mountains, forests and groves with the loud and deep sound of the wheels of the chariot.
vimardamānā daityaughā anuhrādaṁ yayuḥ śubhāḥ |
śataṁ śatasahsrāṇāṁ rathānāṁ hemamālinām ||3-51-4
Oppressing groups of demons accompanied the auspicious anuhrāda along with hundreds and hundred thousands of chariots adorning golden garlands.
parighairbhindiphālaiścha bhallaiḥ pāśaiḥ paraśvadhaiḥ |
vividhāyudhahastāste śūlamudgarapāṇayaḥ ||3-51-5
The demons were holding many varieties of weapons such as iron bludgeons (parigha), short javelins or arrows shot through a tube or hand (bhindiphāla), missiles (bhalla), ropes (pāśa), hatchets or axes (parashvadha), spears (śūla) and hammers (mudgara) in their hands.
suvarṇajālanirmuktairvajraiścha samalaṅkṛtāḥ |
rathaishcitraishcha kavacaiḥ sajjamānā mahāsurāḥ ||3-51-6
The demons were decorated with gold and diamonds. The great demons became ready for the battle with strange chariots.
tadā viśālocchritaśailarūpe
babhau rathe kāṣchanacitritāṅge |
daityādhipaḥ sattvabalānurūpe
samāsthitastvapratime surūpe ||3-51-7
The king of demons sparkled in the chariot, which was huge like a mountain, decorated with golden pictures and endowed with strength of good and incomparable good form.
virochanashcha balavānvaiśvānarasamadyutiḥ |
mahatā rathavaṁśena sarvāstrakuśalaḥ śuchiḥ ||3-51-8
The powerful virochana, having splendor equal to vaiśvānara, the god of fire, the expert of all knowledge, the pure one, was ready with a great array of chariots.
vyūhānāṁ viniyogajṣo jṣānavijṣānatattvavit |
baleḥ pitā suravaraḥ surāṇāmiva vāsavaḥ ||3-51-9
virochana is the one who knows to build battle formations, the expert of the principles of higher knowledge and the true nature of god, the father of bali, the best among demons, like vāsava (indra) for the devas.
sarvāyudhasamopetaṁ kiṅkiṇījālabhūṣitam |
yuktānāṁ vājimukhyānāṁ sahasreṇāśugāminām ||3-51-10
His chariot was provided with all weapons, decorated with a multitude of bells, yoked with one thousand best, fast moving horses.
rathamāruhya daityendro babhau merurivāparaḥ |
kiṅkiṇījālaparyantaṁ gajendradhvajashobhitam |
The indra (king) of demon, virochana, mounted on the chariot, full of multitude of bells, decorated with a flagstaff, having an indra (king) of elephants as the flag, dazzled like another meru mountain.
saṁdhyābhrasamavarṇābhiḥ patākābhirailaṅkṛtam ||3-51-11
The chariot, full of flags, dazzled with the colour of the evening sky.
pravālajambūnadabhakticitraṁ
vyālaṁ vikārāntaranemighoṣam|
rathaṁ samāruhya kirīṭamālī
yayau sa yuddhāya mahāsurendraḥ ||3-51-12
The great indra (king) of demons, virochana, wearing a crown, mounted on the chariot, beautified with statues of tigers, pearls, gold and colourful lines, accompanied by the continuous sound of its wheels, and proceeded for battle.
virochanānujaścaiva kujaṁbho nāma dānavaḥ |
syandanairbahusāhasrairmaṇikāṣchanabhūṣitaiḥ ||3-51-13
The younger brother of virochana, the demon named kujaṁbha also proceeded for the battle with many thousands of chariots, decorated with jewels and gold.
vṛto madabalātsiktairdevāribhirariṁdamaḥ |
prāsapāśagadāhastairdānavairyuddhakāṅkṣibhiḥ ||3-51-14
He was accompanied by highly powerful demons, full of the false pride of strength, enemies of deva-s, oppressor of enemies, holding barbed darts (prāsa), rope (pāśa) and mace (gada) in their hands, longing for battle.
sa parvatanibhākāro bhinnāṣjanachayaprabhaḥ |
mahatā bhrājamānena kirīṭena suvarchasā ||3-51-15
The demons having a huge body like mountains, shining like broken black stone, sparkled greatly, with dazzling crowns.
sarvaratnavicitreṇa kavachena ca saṁvṛtaḥ |
mahatā dīptavapuṣā ratnenendurivāṁśumān ||3-51-16
Covered by a shield, decorated with all kinds of jewels and his sparkling body, the demon dazzled like sun, dazzling with moon.
śātakaumbhena mahatā tālavṛkṣeṇa ketunā |
rarāja rathamadhyastho merustha iva bhāskaraḥ ||3-51-17
With bright golden pots and the flag of the palm tree, the demon, mounted on the chariot dazzled like the sun on the meru mountain.
raṇapaṭurativīryasattvabuddhiḥ
surasamarābhimukhaḥ prayāti tūrṇam |
asuragaṇasamāvṛtaḥ kujambha-
stridaśagaṇairiva vṛtrahāmarendraḥ ||3-51-18
Expert in battles, highly valiant, having pure, good intellect, kujambha, surrounded by groups of demons proceeded for the battle against deva-s, like the slayer of vṛtra (indra) surrounded by devas.
asilomā ca tatraiva dānavaḥ parvatāyudhaḥ |
dāruṇaṁ vapurāsthāya dāruṇo dāruṇānanaḥ ||3-51-19
The demon, asilomā who has mountain as weapon was also there along with the demon dāruṇa, who had a dreadful face.
raudraḥ śakaṭacakrākṣo mahākāyo mahābalaḥ |
kṛṣṇavāsā mahādaṁṣṭraḥ kirīṭī lohitānanaḥ ||3-51-20
The demon raudra, whose eyes were like the cart-wheel, the powerful demon mahākāya, the demons kṛṣnavāsā, mahādaṁṣṭra, krīṭi and lohitānana,
vṛto daityasahasraughairgiripādapayodhibhiḥ |
nānārūpadharairdṛptairdaityaistridaśaśatrubhiḥ ||3-51-21
surrounded by groups of thousands of demons, who can fight with mountains and trees, proud demons who have a variety of forms, the enemies of devs-s were also there.
te śūlahastā gagane caranta
itastatastoyadavṛndatulyāḥ |
khaṁ cādayantastapanīyaniṣkā
yathonnatāḥ prāvṛṣi kālameghāḥ ||3-51-22
The demons, holding spears and wearing golden ornaments, moving in the sky here and there (everywhere), like groups of water bearing clouds, covered the sky like black clouds showering rain.
anāyuṣāyāḥ putrastu vṛtro nāma mahāsuraḥ |
devaśatrurmahākāyastāmrāsyo nirnatodaraḥ ||3-51-23
The son of anāyuṣa, the great demon named vṛtra, enemy of devs-s, with a huge body, with a coppery red coloured (tāmra) face, having his belly hanging down,
dīptajihvo hariśmaśrurūrdhvaromā mahāhanuḥ |
nīlāṅgo lohitamukhaḥ kirīṭī lohitāmbaraḥ ||3-51-24
with his blazing tongue, having yellow green face hair, his hair standing up, having a huge cheekbone, blue body, red face, wearing a crown and red clothes,
ājānubāhurvikṛtaḥ śvetadaṁṣṭro vibhīṣaṇaḥ |
mahāmāyādharo bhīmo hemakeyūrabhūṣaṇaḥ ||3-51-25
having a huge body and arms, deformed, having white fangs, fearful, capable of holding great illusions, huge and decorated with a golden bracelet on his upper arm,
mahatā maṇicitreṇa kavachena tu saṁvṛtaḥ |
hemamālādharo raudraścakraketuramarṣaṇaḥ ||3-51-26
the terrible demon, covered by a shield decorated with great, strange and beautiful jewels, wearing a golden garland, having a wheel on his flag, impatient,
kiṅkīṇiśatasaṅghuṣṭaṁ tapanīyavibhūṣitam |
yuktaṁ hayasahasreṇa raktadhvajapatākinam ||3-51-27
the one mounted on a chariot, accompanied by the sound of hundreds of bells, decorated with gold, yoked with thousands of horses, having a flagstaff and red flag,
rathānīkena mahatā yuddhāyābhimukho yayau |
divyaṁ syandanamāsthāya daityānāṁ nandivardhanaḥ ||3-51-28
the demon who increases the satisfaction of demons, mounted on a divine chariot, proceeded for battle, accompanied by a large assembly of chariots.
tapitakanakabiṁdupiṅgalākṣo
dititanayo'surasainyayuddhanetā |
vikasitakamalābhacārucakṣuḥ
sitadaśanaḥ shuśubhe rathāsanasthaḥ ||3-51-29
The demon, having eyes as yellow as molten gold, the son of diti, the leader of the army of demons in the battle, having large eyes as beautiful as a fully blossomed lotus flower, having white sparkling teeth, was mounted on an auspicious chariot.
ekacakrastu tatraiva sūryacakra ivoditaḥ |
kālacakrasamo raudraścakrāyudha ivodyataḥ |
sarvāyasamayaṁ divyaṁ rathamāsthāya bhāsuram ||3-51-30
Even though he was driving only one chariot there, he, dazzled as the rising wheel of sun, equal to the wheel of time. Highly terrible, he dazzled as one having wheel as his weapon, mounted on a shining divine chariot made of iron.
vṛto daityagaṇairdṛptaiḥ kālāyasaśilāyudhaiḥ |
tasyāśītisahasrāṇi rathināṁ citrayodhinām ||3-51-31
He was surrounded by the proud groups of demons, having black stones as weapons, accompanied by eighty thousand expert chariot fighters.
sarve kālantakaprakhyā rudhirākṣā mahābalāḥ |
āyasaiḥ kāṣchanaiścaiva sannaddhā varavarṇinaḥ ||3-51-32
All appeared like the slayer of the god of death (shiva), with blood red eyes, wearing iron shields, shining like gold and beautified with best colours.
vyarājantāntarikṣasthā nīlā iva payodharāḥ |
The demons dazzled in the sky like blue water bearing clouds.
[ saṁdaṣṭauṣṭhapuṭā ghorā mahākāyā mahāsurāḥ |
vadhāya surasainyasya sannahyanta mahābalāḥ ]
[The highly powerful, terrible, great demons with huge bodies, biting their lips with teeth (due to anger) became ready for slaying the army of devas.]
sarve kālāntakaprakhyā dhīrāḥ samaradurjayāḥ ||3-51-33
All the brave demons, difficult to conquer in the battle appeared like the slayer of the god of death (shiva).
sāgarodaragambīrā nīlavaktrā durāsadāḥ |
rejuryānto'suravarā velātītā ivārṇavāḥ ||3-51-34
Having bellies as deep as the ocean, with blue mouth, difficult to be approached, the best among the demons dazzled, as they were going, like ships in the ocean approaching the shore.
te bhīmamāyāḥ susamṛddhakāyāḥ
kirīṭinaḥ kāṣchanabhūśitāṅgāḥ |
yayustadā svāyudhadīptahastā
nabhaḥ sapakṣā iva parvatendrāḥ ||3-51-35
The demons having huge illusions, having a sumptuous body, wearing crowns, with their limbs decorated with gold, proceeded, taking their weapons in their hands, like the indras (kings) of mountains with their wings.
saṁdiṣṭo baliputreṇa vṛtrabhrājā mahāsuraḥ |
vadhāya surasainasya saṁnahyasveti vīryavān ||3-51-36
The great demon, the brother of vṛtra, the valiant demon instructed by the son of bali to proceed for slaying the army of deva-s,
hematālī mahādaṁṣṭraḥ sragvī rucirakuṇḍalaḥ |
raktamālyāmbaradharaśchaṇḍaḥ samaradurjayaḥ ||3-51-37
the demon, having a golden banner, having great fangs, wearing garlands, wearing beautiful ear rings, wearing blood red coloured garlands, fierce, difficult to conquer in battle,
sumahāvṛttanayanaḥ sa kirīṭī dhanurdharaḥ |
prabhinna iva mātaṅgaḥ śārdūlasamavikramaḥ ||3-51-38
having large round eyes, wearing a crown, holding a bow, flowing with spit like an elephant in rut, equal to a tiger in valiance,
mahātālanibhaṁ cāpaṁ tathā rucirasāyakam |
visphārayanmahāvegaṁ vajraniṣpeṣaniḥsvanam ||3-51-39
the one who stretches his huge bow, appearing like a palm tree and who shoots suitable arrows with great speed with a sound of striking vajra (by indra),
rathena kharayuktena dvajena bhujagena ha |
shuśubhe syandanasthaḥ sa sandhyāgata ivāṁśumān ||3-51-40
mounted on an auspicious chariot yoked with donkeys with a flag of serpents, looked like the sun proceeding to evening in the sky.
rathaistu bahusāhasrairhemapaṭṭavibhūṣitaiḥ |
kūṭamudgarasaṁpūrṇairjalapūrṇairivāmbudaiḥ |
Many thousands of chariots decorated with golden plates, complete with mallets and hammers filled the battle field like water bearing clouds fill the sky.
sa daityendro'bhicakrāma tasminyuddha upasthite ||3-51-41
The indra (king) of demons accompanied by these chariots went to the battle field.
pavanasamagatirviśālavakṣā
vikasitapaṅkajacārugarbhagauraḥ |
pravararathagato yayau sa tūrṇaṁ
tridaśagaṇairabhilakṣitaprabhāvaḥ ||3-51-42
The demon having the speed equal to wind, having a wide chest, with the beautiful colour of the womb of a blooming lotus, mounting on the best chariot, proceeded for the battle, knowing the skill of the groups of devss.
siṁhikātanayaścaiva rāhurnāma mahāsuraḥ |
vikaṭaḥ parvatākāraḥ śataśīrṣā śatodaraḥ ||3-51-43
The son of siṁhikā, the great demon named rāhu, dreadful, having a huge body like a mountain with hundred heads and hundred bellies,
pītamālyāmbaradharo jāmbūnadavibhūṣitaḥ |
snigdhavaiḍūryasaṅkāśaḥ padmapatranibhekṣaṇaḥ ||3-51-44
wearing yellow garlands and clothes, decorated with gold, beautiful like a wet cats eye gem, having eyes as beautiful as the leaves of lotus flower,
sarvakāṣchanasaṁyuktaṁ maṇijālapariṣkṛtam |
patākaśatasaṅkīrṇaṁ yuktaṁ paramavājibhiḥ ||3-51-45
āruroha rathaṁ divyaṁ daityaḥ paramavīryavān |
nanāda ca mahānadaṁ kampayanvasudhātalam ||3-51-46
the most valiant demon, mounted on a divine chariot decorated with all kinds of gold, renovated by groups of jewels, full of hundreds of flags, yoked with the best horses and roared with a great sound, shaking the surface of earth.
mayena vihito divyastasya keturhiraṇmayaḥ |
mayūrapakṣasaṅkāśaṁ kavacaṁ cāyasaṁ mahat ||3-51-47
His divine flag, full of gold, was made by maya. His great shield of iron was beautiful like the wings of a peacock.
bhīmavegaravaiścānyai rathairdivyaiḥ subhāsuraiḥ |
nānāpraharaṇākīrṇaiḥ sevyamāno mahābalaḥ ||3-51-48
The highly powerful demon had other sparkling divine chariots having tremendous speed, full of different varieties of weapons, at his service.
asuragaṇapatirgajendragāmī
atirabhasagatirmahāsurāṇām |
arigaṇamabhito vibhuḥ prayāto
girivaramastamivāṁśumāntsudīptaḥ ||3-51-49
The leader of the groups of demons, the lord of demons, having the stride of an elephant king, in a most hurried manner among the great demons, stood opposing the group of enemies, like bright sun proceeding to the asta parvata, the best among mountains.
viprachittistu tatraiva danorvaṁśavivardhanaḥ |
kaśyapasyātmajaḥ śrīmānbrahmaṇastejasā samaḥ ||3-51-50
The demon viprachitti, the one who flourished the race of danu, was also there, the son of kashyapa, auspicious, equal to brahma in splendor.
yaṣṭā kratusahasrāṇāṁ vedavittapasānvitaḥ |
svayaṁbhuvā dattavaro varadashcha svayaṁbhuvaḥ |
īśitvaṁ ca mahatvaṁ ca vaśitvaṁ ca mahādyuteḥ ||3-51-51
The one who performed thousands sacrifices, expert of veda-s, with penance, the one to whom the self-born (brahmā) gave boons, the one who is capable of giving boon to the self-born, the one with great splendor having the state of lordship, greatness and the one having the freedom of will,
aiśvaryaguṇasaṁpanno brahmeva svayamūrjitaḥ |
sārdhaṁ putraishcha pautraishcha sannahyata mahābalaḥ ||3-51-52
the one endowed with all qualities of prosperity, the one who is energetic as the self-born (brahmā), the powerful demon (viprachitti), along with his sons and grandsons, became ready for the battle.
sarve māyādharāḥ śūrāḥ kṛtāstrā raṇadurjayāḥ |
sarve kamalavarṇabhā hemakūṭocchrayocchrayāḥ ||3-51-53
All were having the power of illusion, valiant, experts in archery, difficult to conquer in battle. All were bright with the colour of the lotus flower and as tall as the golden peak.
sarve rajatasaṅkāśāḥ kailāsaśikharopamāḥ |
mayena nirmitāsteṣāṁ sarve māyāmayā rathāḥ ||3-51-54
vicaranto vyarājanta śāradā iva toyadāḥ |
All were bright like silver, tall comparable to the peaks of mountain kailāsa and all had chariots with illusion made by the demon maya which sparkled as they moved like water bearing clouds in the autumn season.
sarve haṁsadhvajāḥ śvetāḥ śvetadaṇḍasamucchrayāḥ ||3-51-55
All had white flags with swan. All were white and all had tall white flagstaffs.
śvetāmbaradharā daityāḥ śvetamālyavibhūṣitāḥ |
śvetātapatrāḥ sarve te śvetakuṇḍalamaṇḍitāḥ ||3-51-56
The sons of diti (demons) were wearing white clothes, decorated with white garlands. All were having white umbrellas. All were decorated with white ear rings.
muktāhāravṛtoraskā bhānti nākeśvarā iva |
mahāgrahanibhākārāḥ śatrūṇāṁ lomaharṣaṇāḥ ||3-51-57
All were wearing pearl garlands on their chest and sparkled as the lord of heaven. All were huge like great planets. All were capable of making the hairs of the enemies stand erect with excitement.
raktacitrāmbaradharāścitrābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ |
trailokyavijayaṁ nāma rathamāsthāya vīryavān ||3-51-58
All were wearing strange clothes of red and were decorated with strange ornaments. The valiant demon (viprachitti) mounted on a chariot named trailokyavijayam.
kailāsaśikharākāramaṣṭanalvāyatāntaram |
yuktaṁ vājisahasreṇa sitena śivavarchasā |
patākāśatasaṣchannaṁ nānāyudhavikalpitam ||3-51-59
The chariot was tall like the peaks of kailāsa and eight furlong wide, yoked with one thousand horses, with the auspicious colour of white, having hundreds of flags and equipped with all kinds of weapons.
himāṁśukundapratimaṁ viśālaṁ
sitātapatraṁ danujeshvarasya |
vibhāti tasyopari dhāryamāṇam
śvetādrimūrdhopagataḥ śaśāṅkaḥ ||3-51-60
The wide and white umbrella of the lord of the sons of danu (demons), more white than the one with cold rays (moon) and the white jasmine, sparkled above him like the moon sparkling on the peak of the white mountain.
keśī dānavamukhyastu jihmastāmrākṣadarśanaḥ |
nīlameghachayaprakhyaḥ kālaḥ puruṣavigrahaḥ ||3-51-61
keshi, prominent among the sons of danu (demons), the one with squint, having coppery red colour eyes as seen, appearing like a group of dark blue clouds, similar to the god of death, having the body of puruṣa,
mahāgrahanibhākāraḥ śatrūṇāṁ lomaharṣaṇaḥ |
citramālyāmbaradharo raktābharaṇabhūṣitaḥ ||3-51-62
having a huge body like a great planet, the one who makes the hairs of enemies to stand erect, wearing strange garlands and clothes, decorated with strange red coloured ornaments,
śatākṣaḥ śatabāhuścha hariśmaśrurmahābalaḥ |
śaṅkukarṇo mahānādo vapuṣā ghoradarśanaḥ ||3-51-63
having hundred eyes, hundred arms, with green face hair, highly powerful, having pointed ears, having a loud voice, terrible to see with his body,
yuktaṁ mahiṣakairdivyairghaṇṭākoṭikṛtasvanam |
mahāvāridharākāramāsthāya rathamuttamam ||3-51-64
mounted on a best chariot, yoked with hundreds of divine buffaloes, having sound of millions of bells, having the shape of a great water bearing cloud.
dhvajenoṣṭreṇa mahatā nīlakesaravarchasā |
nānārāgavicitrābhiḥ patākābhirvibhūṣitam ||3-51-65
The chariot was decorated with many flags of many beautiful colours. The chariot was having a great flag staff with a blue coloured flag having a camel on it.
dvipaṣcāśatsahasrāṇi rathānāmugravarchasaām |
yayustasyāsurendrasya prayātasya surānprati ||3-51-66
The indra of the demons, opposing the deva-s, was accompanied by fifty two thousand chariots, having fearful great shapes.
bhānti bhinnāṣjananibhāḥ prayātasya mahātmanaḥ |
daṁṣṭrārdhacandravadanāḥ sabalākā ivāmbudāḥ ||3-51-67
The great souls, the demons, shining like split black stones, accompanied the demon. With fangs and faces like half moon, they appeared like water holding clouds accompanied by cranes.
tattasya vaiḍūryasuvarṇacitraṁ
vidyutprabhaṁ bhāskararaśmitulyam |
kirīṭamābhātyasurottamasya
dāvāgnidīptaṁ śikharaṁ yathādreḥ ||3-51-68
He had a colourful umbrella, decorated beautifully with gold, bright as lightning, equal to the rays of the sun. The best among demons had a crown, blazing like the blazing peak of a mountain.
vṛṣaparvāsuracaiva śrīmāṁścha surasūdanaḥ |
āruroha rathaṁ divyaṁ meruśṛṅgamivāṁśumān ||3-51-69
The auspicious demon vṛṣaparva, the slayer of deva-s, mounted on a divine chariot, like the sun mounting on the peak of the mountain meru.
pravālajāmbūnadacitrakūbaraṁ
mahārathaṁ bhārasahaṁ mahārham |
svalaṅkṛtaṁ rājatahemakuṇḍalaṁ
gabhastinakṣatrataḍinnikāśam ||3-51-70
The frame of the great, load bearing, luxurious chariot was beautified by pearls and gold. The demon himself, wearing silver and golden ear rings, appeared like a star in the sky, sparkling with lightning.
keyūrayuktāṅgadanaddhabāhuḥ
sahasratāreṇa ca charmaṇā saḥ |
sāṅgrāmikairābharaṇaiścha citrai-
rmadhyāhnasūryapratimo babhuva ||3-51-71
The demon was wearing bracelets on his arms. His shield was decorated with one thousand stars. Wearing ornaments suitable for the battle, he sparkled in the battle field, excelling the splendor of the midday sun.
mahābalo baddhatalāṅgulitro
balotkaṭaḥ kiṁśukalohitākṣaḥ |
pragṛhya cāmīkaracārucitraṁ
cāpaṁ sthito vṛttaviśālanetraḥ ||3-51-72
The powerful demon wearing gloves on his hands, terrible with power, having red eyes as beautiful as flowers of the tree Butea frondosa, the one having his long eyes wide open, stood in the battle field, holding the bow, with golden knots.
mahāsurendraścha mahāsurairvṛto
balistadā syandanamāruroha |
vaiḍūryahemopachitaṁ viśālaṁ
vidyutprabhaṁ ṣoḍaśanalvamātram ||3-51-73
Then bali, the great indra (king ) of demons, mounted his chariot, surrounded by great demons. The chariot, sixteen furlongs wide, was splendorous as lightning, beautified with cats eye jewels and gold.
yuktaṁ sahasreṇa diteḥ sutānāṁ
gajānanānāṁ vikṛtākṛtīnām|
cāmīkaroraḥsthalabhūṣitānāṁ
pranardatāṁ prāvṛṣi cāmbudānām ||3-51-74
He was accompanied by thousands of the sons of diti (demons), having the face of elephants, having distorted forms, decorated by shields on their chests, roaring like the water bearing clouds, showering rain.
mahārathaṁ devarathaprakāśaṁ
sahasramāyena mayena sṛṣṭam |
īhāmṛgākrīḍitabhakticitraṁ
divyaṁ rathaṁ divyarathānuyātam ||3-51-75
The great divine chariot, created by maya, with thousand illusions, was shining like the chariot of deva-s, decorated by pictures of playing wolves was accompanied by many divine chariots.
sakiṅkiṇīkaṁ vimalaṁ suvistṛtaṁ
hiraṇmayaiḥ padmaśatairalaṅkṛtam |
abhyādade vaijayikīṁ jayāya
srajaṁ balirhemavicitrapuṣpām ||3-51-76
Decorated by bangles with bells and hundreds of lotus flowers, wearing the garland of golden flowers named vaijayanti for victory,
Abadhya mālāṁ prabhayā vicitrāṁ
balistadā bhāti bhujairviśālaiḥ |
rarāja taiḥ sarvasamṛddhiyuktai-
rmahārchiṣā sūrya ivāmbarasthaḥ ||3-51-77
the demon bali sparkled, with his broad arms, decorated by splendorous garlands, endowed with all kinds of prosperity, like the splendorous sun shining in the sky.
srajaṁ tadābadhyati cāsya durgā
sarvāsurāṇāmiva hārabhūtām |
vairochaniḥ sarvaśriyābhijuṣṭo
vibhrājate'sau śaradīva candraḥ ||3-51-78
Then goddess durgā decorated him with the garland, as though it was for all the demons. Then the demon bali, the son of virochana, sparkled like the moon of autumn season,
merostaṭairvā jvalanaprakāśai-
rādityasaṁyuktamivābhrajālam |
like the groups of white clouds sparkle with the sun, with the light of fire on the summit of the mountain meru.
prāsāścha pāśāścha hiraṇyabaddhā
varmāṇi khaḍgāścha paraśvadhāścha ||3-51-79
dhanūṁṣi vajrāyudhasapramāṇi
divyā gadā vajramukhāścha śaktyaḥ |
divyāścha khaḍgā viśikhāścha dīptā
nārācapūrṇā vividhāścha tūṇāḥ ||3-51-80
The weapons, barbed missiles (prāsa) ropes with golden knots, shields, swords, and also hatchets, bows equal to the wepon vajra of indra, divine maces, the spears shakti with diamonds at the tip, divine swords, blazing arrows, quivers holding sharp arrows -
dhṛtā rathe daityavṛṣasya tasya
cakāśire prajvalitā yatholkāḥ |
All these weapons sparkled in the chariot of the best among the demons, like a group of blazing meteors.
te cāmarāpīḍadharāḥ sudaṁṣṭrāḥ
suvarṇamuktāmaṇihemacitrāḥ ||3-51-81
vījyanti bālavyajanairvinītā
mahāsurāḥ syandanavedikāsthāḥ |
The demons with good fangs, decorated with gold, pearls, and jewels were having chowries of yak tail. The great demons mounted on the chariot were comforted by modest servants fanning them.
ayaḥśirā aśvaśirā durāpaḥ
śibirmataṅgo viśirāḥ śatākṣaḥ ||3-51-82
ayo nikumbhaḥ krathanashcha dānavo
rarakṣire te daśa dānavādhipam |
ayaḥśira, ashvashira, durāpa, shibi, mataṅga, vishira, śatākṣa, aya, nikumbha, the son of danu named kratha - These ten demons protected the king of demons.
puraścarāścaiva sahasraśo'surāḥ
padātayo dānavarājarakṣiṇaḥ ||3-51-83
śataghnicakrāśaniśaktipāṇayaḥ
prajagmuragre'nilatulyaveginaḥ |
Many hundreds of demons, walking, the protectors of the king of demons, accompanied him, holding the weapons such as clubs with spikes, cakra (wheel), missiles, the spears shakti, having speed equal to the wind.
ghaṇṭāḥ suśabdāstapanīyabaddhā
āḍambarā gargaraḍiṇḍimāścha ||3-51-84
mahāravā dundubhayashcha nedū
rathaprayāṇe ditijeshvarasya |
The musical instruments, trumpets (āḍambara), gargara and drums (ḍiṇḍima), decorated with bells having good sound and gold, and trumpets with loud sounds played during movement of the chariot of the king of demons.
tasyotthitaḥ kāṣchanavedikāḍhyo
hiraṇmayo divyamahāpatākaḥ ||3-51-85
mahādhvajo vai tapanīyanaddho
rarāja vīrasya yathā vivasvān |
For the demon king, a great golden divine flag, rose up on the altar. For the valiant demon, a great flag staff rose up, decorated with gold, like the flag staff of the sun god.
samucchritaṁ kāṣchanamātapatraṁ
srakkāṣchanī vakṣasi cāsya bhāti ||3-51-86
A great golden umbrella also rose up for the demon king. A golden garland sparkled on his chest.
samantataścāpyasurāścaranti
daityarṣayaḥ prāṣjalayo jayanti |
Demons moved around the demon king. The demon sages wished the king success with folded hands.
purohitāḥ shatruvadhe samāhitā-
stathaiva cānye śrutaśīlavṛddhāḥ ||3-51-87
japaishcha mantraishcha tathauṣadhībhi-
rmahātmanaḥ svastyayanaṁ pracakruḥ |
The priests, keen in the destruction of the enemies and other old priests experts in the old knowledge and rituals, with chanting, mantras and medicines, wished a successful journey for the great soul.
sa tatra vastrāṇi śubhāścha gāvaḥ
phalāni puṣpāṇi tathaiva niṣkān ||3-51-88
balirdvijebhyaḥ prayataḥ prayaccha-
nvirājate'tīva yathā dhaneśaḥ |
There, the demon king, bali, offered good clothes, cows, fruits, flowers as well as gold coins to the twice borns and sparkled as the lord of wealth (kubera).
sahasrasūryo bahukiṅkiṇīkaḥ
parārddhyajāmbūnadahemacitraḥ ||3-51-89
sahasracandrāyutatārakaścha
ratho baleragnirivāvabhāti |
The chariot of the demon king bali, dazzled like fire with the splendor of one thousand suns, many bells, decorated with gold, thousands of moons and ten thousand stars.
tamāsthito dānavasaṅgṛhītaṁ
mahābalaḥ kārmukadhṛksabāṇaḥ ||3-51-90
udvartayiṣyaṁstridaśendrasenā-
matīva raudraṁ sa bibharti rūpam |
In the chariot driven by the son of danu (demon), the powerful demon stood, holding the bow and arrow, taking up a most terrible form to beat and break the army of the devas.
sa vegavānvīrarathaughasaṅkulaḥ
prayāti devānprati daityasāgaraḥ ||3-51-91
mahārṇavo vīchitaraṅgasaṅkulo
yathā jalaughairyugasaṁśaye tathā |
Accompanied by the fast moving groups of chariots, the ocean of the army of demons proceeded against the deva-s, like the (agitated) great ocean, along with terrific waves of mass of water, at the end of the era.
trailokyavitrāsakarairvapurbhi-
stānyagrato yānti bale rathasya |
mahābalānyucchritakārmukāṇi
saparvatānīva vanāni rājan ||3-51-92
O king! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued): The great army of demons, holding their bows high, with their bodies terrifying the three worlds, proceeded before the chariot of bali, like forests accompanied by mountains.
