vaiśampāyana uvāca
shrutaste daityasainyasya vistaro janamejaya |
bhūyastridaśasainyasya śṛṇu vistaramāditaḥ ||3-52-1
Translation
vaiśampāyana said:
O janamejaya! You heard the detailed description of the army of diti's sons (demons). Now hear the description of the army of the deva-s in detail from the beginning.
surādhipastu bhagavānājṣāpayata vai surān |
marudgaṇāṁstathādityānviśvāndevāṁścha vāsavaḥ ||3-52-2
The lord vāsava (indra), the leader of deva-s, ordered all the deva-s, the group of marut-s, āditya-s, viśvadeva-s,
vasūnaṣṭau bhṛśaṁ sarvānyakṣarakṣomahoragān |
vidyādharagaṇānsarvāngandharvāṁścha mahābalān ||3-52-3
all the eight vasu-s, all the yakṣa-s, rākṣasa-s, the great serpents, all the groups of vidyādhara-s and the highly powerful gandharva-s,
mahārṇavāṁścha śailāṁścha tathā rudrānmahaujasaḥ |
yamavaiśravaṇau chobhau varuṇaṁ ca janādhipam ||3-52-4
all the great oceans, mountains, rudra-s of great energy, both yama and vaiśravaṇa and the lord varuṇa,
ye tu siddhā mahātmānaḥ pitarashcha manasvinaḥ |
rājarṣayaścha shatasho yogasiddhāstathaiva ca ||3-52-5
the great souls siddha-s, all the forefathers with strong brave minds, hundreds of the royal sages and also the yogasiddhas.
tridaśājṣāpakaḥ śakra ājṣāpayati vīryavān |
bhavanto daityanāśāya sannahyantāmiti prabhuḥ ||3-52-6
The valiant śakra who orders the deva-s, ordered them. The lord ordered them: All of you shall get ready for the destruction of the sons of diti.
śakrasya vacanaṁ śrutvā tataḥ sarve divaukasaḥ |
sannahyanta mahātmānaḥ śakrasya samavikramāḥ ||3-52-7
Hearing the words of śakra (indra), all the deva-s, all the great souls, equal in valiance to śakra (indra) prepared themselves.
nānākavachinaḥ sarve vicitrakavacadhvajāḥ |
nānāyudhodyatakarā mattā iva mahāgajāḥ ||3-52-8
All were having varieties of shields, all were having beautiful shields and flagstaff. All took up varieties of weapons, like great elephants in rut.
kechidāruruhurvyāghrānkechidāruruhurgajān |
kechidāruruhurnāgānkechidāruruhurvṛṣān ||3-52-9
Some mounted on tigers, some mounted on elephants, some mounted on serpents, some mounted on bulls.
harinetro hariśmaśrurdviradairāvṛtadhvajam |
rathaṁ harihayairyuktaṁ sa prāyātsamaraṁ prati ||3-52-10
indra's eyes were like lions'eyes (green), his facial hair was green. His flag was the elephant airāvata. Mounting on his chariot yoked with green horses, he proceeded to the battle field.
ādityavarṇaṁ virajaṁ sudhautaṁ
tvaṣṭrā svayaṁ nirmitamīśvarārtham |
jālaiścha jāmbūnadabhakticitrai-
ralaṁkṛtaṁ kāṣchanadāmabhiścha ||3-52-11
The chariot constructed by tvaṣṭrā himself for the god, had the colour of the sun, free from dust, made of good elements, decorated with nets and golden lines and golden garlands.
sakūbaropaskarabandhureṣaṁ
vidyutprabhābhiḥ kṛtamābhitāmram |
kailāsaśṛṅgopamamindrayānaṁ
sucārucārupraticakracakram ||3-52-12
The chariot was equipped with a good carriage pole, frame and other equipment, bright with lightning, made in beautiful red. The chariot of indra looked similar to the peak of the mountain kailāsa. The chariot had the best wheel, opposing the wheels of the enemy's chariot.
tārāsahasraiḥ khachitaṁ jvaladbhi-
rdevārhamālyārchitasarvadeham |
samucchritaṁ śrīdhvajamakṣayākṣaṁ
prajvālyamānaṁ puruṣottamena ||3-52-13
Thousands of stars were seen sparkling all over the chariot. Divine garlands decorated all parts of the chariot. With the auspicious flag flying high on the flagstaff and the axle without any decline, the chariot blazed with the splendor of the best puruṣa (indra).
āsthāya taṁ bhāskaramāśuvegaṁ
śacīpatirlokapatiḥ sureśaḥ |
vajrasya dhartā bhuvanasya goptā
yayau mahātmā bhagavānmahendraḥ ||3-52-14
The lord of śacī, the lord of the world, the lord of deva-s, the one who holds vajra, the one who rules the world, the great soul, the lord, the great indra, mounted on the dazzling chariot having high speed.
Amucya varmātha sahasratāraṁ
hutāśanādityasamaprabhāvam |
sūryaprabhaṁ cāmumuche kirīṭaṁ
mālāṁ ca jāmbūnadavaijayantīm ||3-52-15
Then the great indra put on the shield, decorated with thousand stars. It had splendor equal to that of the one who consumes the oblations (fire god) and the sun. He then adorned the crown, having splendor equal to the sun and also the golden garland, vaijayanti.
tvaṣṭrā kṛtaṁ bhāskararaśmidīptaṁ
sutīkṣṇaghorāmalatīvradhāram |
mahāsurāṇāṁ rudhirārdramugraṁ
jagṛhya vajraṁ śataparvabhīmam ||3-52-16
Then the lord took up his weapon vajra, made by tvaṣṭra, blazing like the rays of the sun, having highly sharp and terrible edge, the terrible weapon, wetted by the blood of great demons, the one, huge like hundreds of mountains.
mahāśanī dve ca mahāgrahābhe
dīptāmamoghāṁ ca sa śaktimugrām |
cakraṁ tathaindraṁ sumahatpratāpaṁ
pragṛhya śakraḥ prayayau raṇāya ||3-52-17
indra also took up two swords, huge as the planet ṣaturn, the terrible, blazing and pure spear shakti, the cakra named aindram, having great splendor and proceeded for the battle.
sahasradṛgbhūtapatiḥ sanātanaḥ
sanātanānāmapi yaḥ sanātanaḥ |
khaḍgaṁ ca devādhipatirmahātmā
vaiyāghramādāya ca charma citram ||3-52-18
The one having one thousand eyes, the lord of beings, the eternal one, the eternal lord of the eternals, the great soul, the lord of deva-s also took up a sword and hand gloves made of tiger skin.
kṣīrodadhikṣobhasamucchritāni
purāmṛtāduttamabhūṣaṇāni |
devāsurāṇāṁ samanirjitāni
somārkanakṣatrataḍitprabhāṇi ||3-52-19
The ornaments which were obtained long before, when the milk ocean was churned for amṛta (nectar), the splendorous ear rings having the splendor of moon, sun, stars and lightning, liked equally by the deva-s and demons -
dattānyadityā maṇikuṇḍalāni
yuddhe prayātasya sureshvarasya |
tairbhūṣito bhāti sahasracakṣu-
ruddyotayanvai vidisho dishashcha ||3-52-20
aditi gave these ear rings herself to the lord of deva-s (indra) proceeding for the battle. Wearing these ear rings, the one with one thousand eyes (indra) dazzled lighting up all the directions and sub-directions.
hariḥ prabhurnetrasahasracitro
vibhāti yuddhābhimukhaḥ surendraḥ |
yathā sitaṁ śāradamabhrakalpaṁ
nabhastalaṁ hyṛkṣasahasracitram ||3-52-21
indra, the lord having one thousand eyes, the great indra of the deva-s, dazzled in the battle field, opposing the demons like the white sky in the autumn season dazzles with thousands of white clouds like bears.
stuvanti yāntaṁ vipilairvachobhi-
rjayāśiṣā chorjitasattvavīryam |
atrirvasiṣṭho jamadagnirurvo
bṛhaspatirnāradaparvatau ca ||3-52-22
The sages atri, vasiṣṭha, jamadagni, aurva, bṛhaspati, nārada and also parvata praised the valiant and energetic lord, indra with hymns, good words as well as good wishes for victory in the battle.
tamanvayurdevagaṇā mahendraṁ
prayāntamādityasamānavarchasam |
vishve ca devā marutastathaiva
sādhyāstathādityagaṇāścha sarve ||3-52-23
As the great indra, having splendor equal to āditya (sun), proceeded, accompanied by the groups of deva-s, all the viśvadeva-s, as also marut-s and all the groups of sādhya-s and āditya-s followed him.
te devarājasya puraṁdarasya
hayāścha ye mātalisaṅgṛhītāḥ |
prayānti deveshvaramudvahanto
nabhastalaṁ padbhirivākṣipantaḥ ||3-52-24
The horses of the king of deva-s, the destroyer of strongholds, prompted by mātali, proceeded quickly, carrying the lord of deva-s, as though throwing away the sky with their feet.
brahmarṣayaścaiva maharṣayaścha
rājarṣayaścākṣayapuṇyalokāḥ |
sarve'nujagmuḥ sahasā jvalantaṁ
tejo'nvitaṁ śakramamitrasāham ||3-52-25
The brahma sages as also the great sages, the royal sages, the people having goodness without any decline - all followed śakra (indra), the conqueror of enemies, having blazing splendor.
pragṛhya śūlāṁścha paraśvadhāṁścha
dīptāni cāpānnyaśanīrvicitrāḥ |
varmāṇi cāmucya hiraṇmayāni
prayānti suryāṁśusamaprabhāṇi ||3-52-26
Taking spears, hatchets, blazing bows, lightning arrows and golden shields sparkling like the rays of the sun,
tathā kubero'śvasahasrayuktaṁ
śreṣṭhaṁ rathaṁ sarvasahaṁ mahārham |
divyaṁ samāruhya raṇāya yato
dhaneshvaro dīptagadāgrahastaḥ |3-52-27
kubera, the lord of wealth, taking a blazing mace in his hand, mounting on a best divine chariot yoked with one thousand horses, which can bear all, proceeded for the battle.
niśācarāḥ pāvakadhūmakāyā
rakṣovṛṣā rudrasakhasya tasya |
viśālanānāyudhadīptahastā
yāntyagrato vaiśravaṇasya rājṣaḥ ||3-52-28
Those who move in the night, whose bodies are having the colour of the smoke of fire, the bulls among them, the protectors of the friend of shiva (kubera, vaiśravaṇa) whose broad hands are alighted by varieties of weapons are proceeding in front of king vaiśravaṇa for the battle.
te lohitākṣāḥ parivārya devaṁ
vrajanti bhinnāṣjanacūrṇavarṇāḥ |
yakṣottamā yakṣapatiṁ dhaneśaṁ
rakṣanti vai pāśagadāsihastāḥ ||3-52-29
Those with the colour of the dust of broken black stone, holding ropes and maces in their hands, are surrounding the deva having red eyes (kubera), the best among yakṣa-s, the lord of yakṣa-s, the lord of wealth for protection.
puṇyaḥ prabhuḥ prāṇapatirjitātmā
vaivasvato dharmabhṛtāṁ variṣṭhaḥ |
taḍidgaṇābhaṁ śatavājiyuktaṁ
rathaṁ samārohata sūryakalpam ||3-52-30
The lord of life, the one who conquered the soul, the lord who did many good deeds, vaivasvata, the best among the observers of dharma, mounted on a chariot blazing like a group of lightning, like sun.
taṁ lokapālaṁ pitaro'nujagmu-
rviviktapāpā jvalitāstapobhiḥ |
sarve ca bhūtā bhuvanapradhānā
nānāyudhavyagrakarāḥ subhīmāḥ ||3-52-31
The keeper of the world was accompanied by the forefathers who are without sin and who sparkle with penance. Also there were all the beings, prominent in the world, having huge bodies, holding varieties of weapons.
daṇḍaṁ mahāstraṁ parigṛhya devo
lokāṅkuśaṁ nigrahaniśchitārtham |
hiraṇmayānāṁ kamalotpalānāṁ
mālāṁ manojṣāmavasajya kaṇṭhe ||3-52-32
The lord (vaivasvata, yama) took up his most powerful staff, which controls the world, which is meant for punishment. Then wearing a beautiful, golden lotus garland, agreeable to the mind, on his neck,
sthito'sthimedāmiṣalohitārdraṁ
sarvāsurāṇāṁ nidhanaṁ virūpam |
tejomayaṁ mudgaramugrarūpaṁ
vikarṣamāṇo'ruṇadhūmranetraḥ ||3-52-33
the slayer of all demons stood on the chariot. Then the lord, having smoky red eyes, took up his terrible splendorous, dreadful hammer, which was wet with the bones, fat, meat and blood, for suppressing and slaying all the demons.
samanvito vyādhiśatairanekai-
ryayau hariśmaśrurudārasattvaḥ |
mahāsurāṇāṁ nidhanāya buddhiṁ
cakre tadā vyādhipatiḥ kṛtāntaḥ ||3-52-34
The lord's facial hair was greenish. He was having a generous nature. Fixing his mind on the slaying of the great demons, the lord of diseases, the one who causes death, summoning many hundreds of diseases, proceeded for battle.
tatastriśīṣairbhujagairbṛhadbhi-
ryuktaṁ rathaṁ hemachitaṁ mahātmā |
āsthāya kundendunibhaṁ jalesho
yayau raṇāyāsuradarpahantā ||3-52-35
The great soul, the lord of water (varuṇa), the slayer of the pride of deva-s proceeded for the battle, mounted on a chariot decorated with gold, yoked with huge three-headed serpents and having the splendor of jasmine and the moon.
vaiḍūryamuktāmaṇibhūṣitāṅga-
stejomayaḥ pāśagṛhītahastaḥ |
mahāsurāṇāṁ nidhanāya devaḥ
prayāti rūpyāṅgadabaddhabāhuḥ ||3-52-36
The lord (of water, varuṇa), full of splendor, with his limbs decorated with cats eye gems and pearls, with his hand holding a rope, wearing a white bracelet on his hand, proceeded for slaying the great demons.
[anvīyamāno jaladevatābhi-
rniṣecyamāṇo jalajalaishcha sattvaiḥ |
saṁstūyamānaścha maharṣivṛndaiḥ
saṁpūjyamānaścha mahābhujaṅgaiḥ ]
[(The lord of water) was accompanied by the water gods. Those beings, produced from water, were anointing the lord. He was praised by the groups of great sages and he was worshipped by great serpents.]
kailāsaśṛ+ṅgapratimo'prameyaḥ
samudranātho'mṛtapo mahātmā |
mahoragaiḥ svaistanayaiḥ sugupto
yayau rathenārkasamaprabheṇa ||3-52-37
The lord of ocean (varuṇa), the great soul who had drunk amṛta (nectar), the lord with immeasurable power, appeared similar to the peak of mountain kailāsa. Great serpents were wishing him an auspicious journey. The lord proceeded to the battle, mounted on a chariot having splendor equal to the sun.
yuddhāyataṁ yāntamadīnasattvaṁ
nabhastale candramivātikāntam |
pashyanti bhūtāni mahānubhāvaṁ
saṁhṛṣṭaromāṇi kṛtāṣjalīni ||3-52-38
While the noble minded lord, the pure soul varuṇa, was proceeding for the battle, like the highly beautiful moon in the sky, all beings were looking at the generous lord with folded hands, happiness and excitement.
dhātāryamāṁśo'tha bhago vivasvā-
nparjanyamitrau ca śacī ca devaḥ |
tvaṣṭā tathaivorjitaviśvakarmā
pūṣā ca sākṣāddivi devarājaḥ ||3-52-39
The lord dhātā, aryamā, aṁśa as also bhaga, vivasvān, parjanya, mitra and also the lord of śacī (indra), tvaṣṭā and also the energetic viśvakarmā, pūṣā and the king of deva-s in person -
sauracchadaiḥ sadhvajakiṅkiṇīkai-
rvaiḍūryaniṣkaiśchitahemakaṇṭhaiḥ |
hayairvaraiḥ śakrarathaprakāśai-
ryuktānrathānāruruhuḥ surāste ||3-52-40
All the deva-s, wearing shields, and cats eye gems, gold coins and golden ornaments on their neck, mounted chariots, yoked with the best horses sparkling like the chariots of śakra (indra).
divākarākāranibhāni kechi-
ddhutāśanārchiḥpratimāni kechit |
niśākarāṁśupratimāni kechi-
ttaḍidgaṇoddyotanibhāni kechit ||3-52-41
Some of the deva-s were as splendorous as the lord of the day (sun), some were worshipped like the acceptor of oblations (god of fire), some were like the rays of the lord of the night (moon) and some were having the brightness of group of lightning.
nīlāṁśumeghapratimāni kechi-
tkārṣṇāyasākāranibhāni kechit |
varmāṇi divyāni mahāprabhāṇi
tvaṣṭrā kṛtānyuttamabhānumanti ||3-52-42
Some of the deva-s were shining like dark blue rain clouds, some were sparkling like black iron. The deva-s wore sparkling, divine shields of great splendor, made by tvaṣṭrā.
Amucya mālāścha suvarṇapuṣpāḥ
prayānti toyanilatulyavegāḥ |
dvāvaśvinau caiva mahānubhāvau
rūpottamau dharmabhṛtāṁ variṣṭhau ||3-52-43
Wearing garlands of golden flower, the deva-s proceeded for the battle with the speed of wind of the rainy season. The twin aśvinī deva-s, the generous lords, having the best form, the eminent among those fixed in dharma,
rathaṁ samāruhya suvarṇacitraṁ
raṇaṁ gatau kāṣchanatulyavarṇau |
bhānoḥ sutā vai vasavashcha sarve
balotkaṭā daityavadhāya devāḥ ||3-52-44
mounting on a beautiful golden chariot, having colour equal to gold proceeded to the battle. The lords, the sons of bhānu (sun) and all the vasu-s, having tremendous power, also proceeded for the battle.
rathāṁścha nāgāṁścha mahāpramāṇā-
nāsthāya jagmuḥ suśubhāstrahastāḥ |
rudrāścha sarve'ruṇadhūmavarṇāḥ
śvetairyayurgopatibhirbṛhadbhiḥ ||3-52-45
The deva-s, mounted on chariots and huge elephants, holding auspicious weapons proceeded for the battle. All the rudra-s having the colour of red smoke, mounted on huge white bulls, proceeded for the battle.
mahaujasaḥ sarvaguṇopapannā
dīptātmano bhābhiriva jvalantaḥ |
nānāyudhavyagrakarairbhujaistai-
rlokānsamastāniva nirdahantaḥ ||3-52-46
The deva-s, having great splendor, having all good qualities, with blazing mind and blazing with splendor, holding varieties of weapons in their hands proceeded for the battle as though to burn all the worlds.
yayuḥ sasainyāstapanīyanaddhāḥ
savidyutastoyadharā yathaiva |
vishve ca devāstapasā jvalanto
vīryottamāḥ sūryamarīchivarṇāḥ ||3-52-47
The deva-s, decorated with blazing golden ornaments proceeded for the battle along with their armies like water bearing clouds with lightning. The viśvadeva-s, blazing with penance, with best valiance, with the colour of sun-rays,
yayuḥ sasainyā yudhi durnivāryā
balotkaṭāḥ padmasahasramālāḥ |
rathaiḥ suyuktaistapanīyavarṇai-
rvaiḍūryamuktāmaṇidāmacitraiḥ ||3-52-48
difficult to defend, proceed with their armies. Proud of their power, they were wearing garlands of thousands of lotus flowers, mounted on chariots decorated with gold, beautiful cats eye gems and pearls.
nānāvidhākārasamākulāste
pāriplavaiścaiva sitātapatraiḥ |
tejomayaiḥ kāṣchanacārucitraiḥ
sunirmalaiḥ pāvakasannibhāste ||3-52-49
The deva-s had a variety of forms. They were mounted on chariots having white umbrellas, splendorous, decorated with beautiful golden pictures, without having any dirt and blazing like the fire god.
uracchadaiḥ sadhvajakiṅkiṇīkai-
rhayaishcha vāyoḥ samavegavadbhiḥ |
diśāṁ gajaishcaiva mahābalaistaiḥ
kailāsaśṛṅgapratimairmahadbhiḥ ||3-52-50
The deva-s were wearing shields. Their chariots, decorated with bells, had flags. The chariots were yoked with horses, having speed equal to wind. The deva-s were accompanied by highly powerful elephants of the directions, splendorous as the peaks of mountain kailāsa.
prajagmurugrāyudhacāpahastā-
ścaturyugānte jvalitā ivolkāḥ |
sādhyāścha devāḥ sumahāprabhāvāḥ
svādhīnacakrāḥ pratidīptavaktrāḥ |
prayānti jāmbūnadabhūṣitāṅgā
gāṅgaughamātrairgaganairbalaughaiḥ ||3-52-51
Accompanied by all these the deva-s proceeded to the battle, holding fierce weapons and bows in their hands. They looked like blazing meteors at the end of the four eras. The sādhya-s and the deva-s, having great splendor, having divine wheels under their control and with blazing mouths. They proceeded to the battle field, with limbs decorated with golden ornaments, through the sky, with the splendor of a powerful group of rain bearing clouds from (the heavenly river) gaṅga.
vidyotayanto vidisho diśāścha
mahābalāste jayatāṁ variṣṭhāḥ |
variṣṭhapuṣṭauṣṭhabhujāḥ sudṛptā
vaiśvānarārkapratimaprabhāvāḥ ||3-52-52
The deva-s, those who brighten the directions and the sub-directions, highly powerful ones, the best among the victorious who are well-nourished, endowed with the best lips and broad arms, highly proud, having splendor equal to vaiśvānara (the god of fire) and sun,
te brahmavidbhishcha samasyamānāḥ
saṁpūjyamānāścha suraiḥ saśakraiḥ |
gandharvasaṅghairanugamyamānā
vadhāya teṣāmasurādhipānām ||3-52-53
those who are considered equal by those who know brahma, those who are worshipped by the deva-s along with śakra, accompanied by the groups of gandharva-s, assembled together for slaying the demon kings.
vaiḍūryavajrasphaṭikāgracitrai-
rdhvajaiḥ suvarṇaiścha pariṣkṛtānām |
rūpaṁ babhau chotkaṭābhuṣanānāṁ
daityendranāśāya vibhūṣitānām ||3-52-54
They were decorated with cats eye gems and diamonds. They had flag staff decorated with glass and modified with golden ornaments. The forms of the deva-s, decorated with grand ornaments, ready for the destruction of the kings of demons, dazzled.
ātmaprabhhābhiścha raṇotkaṭābhi-
rvarmaprabhābhiścha tamonudābhiḥ |
dhvajottamābhiḥ svaśarīrabhābhi-
rmahāprabhābhiścha mahojjvalābhiḥ ||3-52-55
The deva-s had self splendor as also the battle splendor. The sparkle of their shields removed the darkness. The deva-s sparkled highly with the blazing splendor of their best flagstaffs and their own bodies.
vibhānti te devavarāḥ sasādhyāḥ
pradhmātaśaṅkhasvanasiṁhanādāḥ ||3-52-56
The best among the deva-s along with sādhya-s dazzled. They blew conches with their voices, as loud as the lion's roar.
mahārathasthāstridivaukasaste
mahābalāḥ śatrubalaṁ prayānti |
mahāstrahastā yayurugrakāyā
mahāsurāṇāṁ nidhanāya devāḥ ||3-52-57
The highly powerful deva-s, the great chariot fighters proceeded against the enemy's army. The deva-s, with fierce bodies, holding great weapons in their hands, proceeded for slaying the great demons.
tathaiva sarve mahato'tivīryā
balotkaṭāste samaraṁ pratītāḥ |
yayurmahāmeghasamānavarṇā-
ścakrāyudhāstoyadanādanādāḥ |3-52-58
All the deva-s having great souls, highly valiant, having immense power, having their colour equal to the great clouds, having wheels as weapons, having the sounds of water bearing clouds proceeded for the battle.
mahendraketupratimā mahābalāḥ
pragṛhya sarvāsurasūdanāṁ gadām |
raṇotkaṭā lohitacandanāktāḥ
sahemamālyāmbarabhūṣitāṅgāḥ ||3-52-59
The highly powerful deva-s, strong like the flagstaff of indra took up maces for slaying all demons. They were fierce in battle, with eyes, like red sandal. They were decorated with golden garlands.
te yuddhaśauṇḍāḥ sabhujāstravīryā
balotkaṭāḥ krodhaviloḍitākṣāḥ |
yayuḥ sajāmbūnadapadmamālā
yatheṣṭanānāvidhakāmarūpāḥ |
They were intoxicated with battle with the valiance of their arms and weapons. They were with immense power. Their eyes were red with anger. deva-s capable of taking forms as they desire, proceeded for the battle adorning garlands of golden lotus flowers.
khaḍgaprabhāśyāmalitāṁsapīṭhāḥ
puraṁdaraṁ vai parivārya devāḥ ||3-52-60
The deva-s, with their back and shoulders, appearing as dark blue due to the splendor of their swords, surrounded the destroyer of strongholds (indra).
vaiḍūryacāmīkaracārurupā-
ṇyābadhya gātreṣu mahāprabhāṇi |
varmāṇi daityāstranivāraṇāni
prayānti yuddhāya sapatnasāhāḥ ||3-52-61
Wearing beautiful golden shields of great splendor, sparkling with cats eye gems on their bodies, so that the arrows of the demons shall not strike them, the deva-s capable of resisting the speed of enemies proceeded for the battle.
tairutthitaiḥ kāṣchanavedikāḍhyai-
rvaradhvajairbhāskararaśmivarṇaiḥ |
yayau surāṇāṁ pṛtanograbhāsā
samunnadantī yudhi siṁhanādān ||3-52-62
With their flagstaffs sparkling like the rays of the sun, like the shafts of light planted on a golden stage, the army of deva-s, with their frontline sparkling, proceeded for the battle roaring like lions.
ityevamuktaṁ tridiveshvarasya
sainyaṁ tadāsītsumahatprabhāvam |
yuddhaṁ prayātasya jayāvahasya
vadhāya teṣāmasurādhipānām ||3-52-63
In this manner, I have told you (O janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) how the army of the lord of deva-s having great splendour, the victorious one, proceeded for battle for slaying the army of the demon kings.
