vaiśampāyana uvāca punareva tu tatrāsīnmahāyuddhaṁ sudāruṇam | kruddhasya namucheshcaiva dharasya ca mahātmanaḥ ||3-55-1

Translation

vaiśampāyana said: Again a highly terrible great battle took place there between the angry demon namuchi and the great soul dhara. saṁrabdhau ca mahābāhū maheṣvāsāvariṁdamau | parasparamudaikṣetāṁ dahantāviva locanaiḥ ||3-55-2 Those valiants with great arms, the great bowmen, the oppressors of enemies, stared at each other as if to burn each other with eyes. visphārya ca mahācāpaṁ hemapṛṣṭhaṁ durāsadam | saṁrambhātsa vasuśreṣṭhastyaktvā prāṇānayudhyata ||3-55-3 Twanging the great bow decorated with gold and difficult to conquer, the best among the vasus (dhara) fought the battle stubbornly, abandoning his (attachment to) lifeforce. sa sāyakamayairjālairdharo daityarathaṁ prati | bhānumadbhiḥ śilādhautairbhānoḥ prāccādayatprabhām ||3-55-4 Shooting groups of arrows that sparkled due to sharpening with grind stone towards the chariot of the son of diti, dhara covered the splendor of the sun. tataḥ prahasya namuchirdharasya ca śilāśitān | asṛjatsāyakāndīptānbhīmavegāndurāsadān ||3-55-5 Then namuchi laughed and shot arrows which were blazing, fast moving and difficult to conquer and sharpened with grind stone towards dhara. mahātejā mahābāhurmahāvego mahārathaḥ | vivyādhātibalo daityo navabhirniśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ||3-55-6 The splendorous, the one with great arms, the highly powerful, the great chariot fighter, the son of diti, (namuchi) shot nine arrows with sharp tips towards dhara. sa totrairiva mātaṅgo vāryamāṇaḥ patatribhiḥ | abhyadhāvaccha saṅkruddho namuchim vasusattamaḥ ||3-55-7 The best among vasu-s, dhara who was blocked by arrows like an elephant controlled by the mahout's staff, became angry and ran towards namuchi. tamāpatantaṁ vegena saṁrambhānnamucī raṇe | daityaḥ pratyasaraddevaṁ matto mattamiva dvipam ||3-55-8 namuchi stubbornly opposed and countered the deva who came running in the battle like an elephant fights against another elephant. tataḥ prādhmāpayacchaṅkhaṁ bherīśataninādinam | vikṣobhya tadbalaṁ harṣādudbhūtārṇavasaṁprabham ||3-55-9 Then he blew a conch loudly with a sound of hundreds of trumpets, agitating his army, equal in splendor to an agitated ocean, with happiness. aśvānṛkṣasavarṇābhānhaṁsavarṇaiḥ suvājibhiḥ | mishrayantsamare daityo vasum prāccādayaccharaiḥ ||3-55-10 Mixing horses, splendorous as bears (namuchi's horses), with auspicious horses having the colour of swans (dhara's horses), (bringing his chariot close to dhara's chariot), the son of diti (namuchi) covered the vasu (dhara) with arrows in the battle. samāśliṣṭāvathānyonyaṁ vasudānavayo rathau | dṛṣṭvā prākampata muhustridaśānāṁ mahadbalam ||3-55-11 Seeing the chariot of vasu (dhara) coming close to the chariot of the son of danu, the great army of deva-s trembled again. krodhasamrambhatāmrākṣau prekṣamāṇau muhurmuhuḥ | garjantāviva śārdūlau prabhinnāviva vāraṇau ||3-55-12 Both of them (dhara and namuchi), looked at each other with angry red eyes again and again. They roared like tigers and trumpeted like elephants in rut. mahāmeghopamaṁ raudramāsīdāyodhanaṁ tayoḥ | rathāśvavarasambādhaṁ mattavāraṇasaṅkulam ||3-55-13 The battle between them became terrible with chariots and horses as well as elephants in rut jostling with each other like a battle between great clouds. samājamiva taṁ dṛṣṭvā prekṣamāṇā mahārathāḥ | āśaṁsanto jayaṁ tābhyāṁ yodhā naikatrasaṁśrayāḥ ||3-55-14 Great chariot fighters, watching the fight, considered the same as an assembly (as a play on a stage). The fighters of both sides wished for victory for both of them. tayoḥ praikṣanta saṁrambhaṁ sannikṛṣṭaṁ mahāstrayoḥ | siddhagandharvamunayo devadānavayostadā ||3-55-15 tau cchadayantāvanyonyaṁ samare niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ | As the siddha-s, gandharva-s and the sages were watching the battle between them, who were great experts of archer, deva-s fought against the sons of danu (demons) and they covered each other with sharp arrows in the battle. śarajālāvṛtaṁ vyoma cakratushcha mahābalau ||3-55-16 The highly powerful fighters covered the atmosphere with groups of arrows. tāvanyonyaṁ jighāṁsantau śaraistīkṣnairmahārathaiḥ | prekṣanīyatamāvāstāṁ vṛṣṭimantāvivāmbudau ||3-55-17 The great chariot fighters, trying to kill each other by shooting sharp arrows were seen as rain bearing clouds showering water. suvarṇavikṛtānbāṇānpramuṣchantāvariṁdamau | bhāskarābhaṁ tadākāśamulkābhiriva cakratuḥ ||3-55-18 The oppressors of enemies, brightened the sky with the sun's splendor as though with meteors by releasing arrows with golden knots (from their bows). tayoḥ śarāḥ prakāśante devadānavayostadā | paṅktyaḥ śaradi mattānāṁ sārasānāmivāmbāre ||3-55-19 The groups of arrows shot by deva-s and the sons of danu sparkled like a group of intoxicated cranes (sārasa birds) sparkling in the sky. tridaśāśvagajānāṁ hi śarīrairgatajīvitaiḥ | kṣaṇena saṁvṛtā bhūmirmeghairiva nabhastalam ||3-55-20 Within a moment the earth was covered by the lifeless bodies of horses and elephants of deva-s, like the sky is covered with clouds. tataḥ sudhāraṁ jvalitaṁ sūryamaṇḍalasannibham | dharāya vasave muktaṁ cakraṁ namuchinā raṇe | Then, during the battle, namuchi released a blazing wheel (cakra) having a good sharp edge, sparkling like the sphere of sun, towards the vasu, dhara. patatā tena cakreṇa dharasya syandanottamaḥ ||3-55-21 sadhvajaḥ sāyudhaḥ sāśvo dagdho'rkakiraṇaprabhaḥ | Due to that wheel, having the splendor of the sun rays, which fell, the best chariot of dhara, along with its flagstaff, weapons and horses were burned. sa tyaktvā syandanaṁ devaḥ pradīptaṁ cakratejasā ||3-55-22 bhayāttasyāsurendrasya gataḥ svagṛhamuttamam | Leaving the chariot burned by the splendor of the blazing wheel, the deva dhara, being afraid of the king (indra) of demons (namuchi) went to his best house. parājitya suraṁ daityo namuchirbalagarvitaḥ ||3-55-23 prayātaḥ svena sainyena bhūyaḥ surachamūṁ prati | The son of diti, namuchi, proud due to power, after defeating the deva (dhara), proceeded with his army, towards the army of deva-s, again. yau tau mayashcha tvaṣṭā ca devadaityeṣu vishrutau ||3-55-24 pravarau viśvakarmāṇau māyāśataviśāradau | Both maya and tvaṣṭā, famous among the sons of diti and the gods, the best creators of the world, are experts in hundreds of illusions. ghorastayoḥ saṁprahāraḥ prāvartata sudāruṇaḥ ||3-55-25 anyonyaspārddhinostatra cirātprabhṛti saṁyuge | A terrible and dreadful battle took place. There, between them, who were desiring for a fight for a long time, a battle took place. tvaṣṭā tu niśitairbāṇairdaityaṁ tu baladarpitam ||3-55-26 parākrāntaṁ parākramya vivyādha triśataiḥ śaraiḥ | Valiant tvaṣṭā, shot three hundred sharp arrows at the valiant son of diti (maya) who was proud of his power. mayastu prativivyādha tvaṣṭaāraṁ niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ||3-55-27 sughātaiḥ suprasannāgraiḥ śātakumbhavibhūśitaiḥ | opposing tvaṣṭa, maya shot sharp arrows decorated with golden knots and having shining tips. nanāda ditijaśreṣṭho hatastvaṣṭuḥ śarairmayaḥ ||3-55-28 Bearing the arrows shot by tvaṣṭa, maya, the best among the sons of diti , roared. saṅkruddho daityasainasya vichinvanniva jīvitam | śaktiṁ kanakavaiḍūryacitradaṇḍāṁ mahāprabhām ||3-55-29 Becoming angry, tvaṣṭa took up the highly splendorous spear shakti with its staff decorated by gold and cats eye gems, as if to seek the life of the army of diti's sons. devo gṛhītvā samare daityendraṁ samapātayat | During the battle, the deva (tvaṣṭa) took up the spear and threw it at the indra (king) of diti's sons. bhīmāṁ sarvāyasīṁ dṛṣṭvā puraṁdara ivāśanim ||3-55-30 tāṁ tvaṣṭurbhujanirmuktāmarkavaiśvānaraprabhām | Seeing that terrible spear of iron, released by tvaṣṭā's arms, appearing like the thunder (vajra) of indra , splendorous like the sun and the fire, mayaściccheda tīkṣṇāgraistūrṇaṁ saptabhirāśugaiḥ ||3-55-31 maya shot seven arrows, with sharp tip and cut off the spear. ataḥ kṣuṇvanniva prāṇāṁstvaṣṭuḥ kopānmahāsuraḥ | preṣayāmāsa saṁrabdhaḥ śarānbarhiṇavāsasaḥ ||3-55-32 Then the great demon (maya), becoming angry and stubborn, shot arrows with peacock feathers as if to pierce the life of tvaṣṭa. ciccheda bāṇāṁstvaṣṭā tāṣjvalitairnataparvabhiḥ | daityasya sumahāvegaiḥ suvarṇavikṛtaiḥ śaraiḥ ||3-55-33 tvaṣṭa cut off those blazing arrows shot by the son of diti (maya) by arrows having high speed, golden knots and sharp tips. tau vṛṣāviva nardantau balinau vāsitāntare | śārdūlāviva cānyonyaṁ prasaktāvabhijaghnatuḥ ||3-55-34 Both of the powerful fighters struck each other roaring like hungry bulls and like tigers opposing each other. anyonyaṁ pratiyudhyantāvanyonyavadhakāṅkṣiṇau | anyonyamabhīvīkṣantau kruddhāvāśīviṣāviva ||3-55-35 Desiring to kill each other, they fought against each other. They looked at each other like angry, poisonous snakes. mahāgajāvivāsādya viṣāṇāgraiḥ parasparam | śaraiḥ pūrṇāyatotsṛṣṭairanyonyamabhijaghnatuḥ ||3-55-36 They opposed each other like great elephants fight with their tusks. Against each other, they shot arrows, released by pulling the bow strings fully. tataḥ suvipulāṁ dīptāṁ mayo rukmāṅgado gadām | tvaṣṭari prāhiṇotkruddhaḥ sarvaprāṇaharāṁ raṇe ||3-55-37 Then maya, wearing a golden bracelet on his upper arm, becoming angry, threw a huge blazing mace, capable of killing all beings, towards tvaṣṭa, in the battle. tathā jaghānātirathastvaṣṭuruttamavājinaḥ | gadayā dānavaḥ kruddho vajreṇendra ivācalān ||3-55-38 With that mace, he, the angry son of danu (maya) killed the best horses of tavṣṭa like indra destroys mountains with his thunderbolt (vajra). tataḥ kruddho mahādaityaḥ kṣurābhyāmatha saṁyuge | punardvābhyāṁ śarābhyāṁ tu niśitābhyāṁ mahāraṇe ||3-55-39 Then, in the great battle, the great son of diti (maya), becoming angry, shot two knife arrows. Following by another two sharp arrows, he dhvajaṁ tvaṣṭuratha ccitvā sūtaṁ ninye yamakṣayam | mahābalānmahāvegāntsadaśvāngadayā'hanat ||3-55-40 cut off the flagstaff of tvaṣṭa and sent his charioteer to the land of the god of death. He killed the highly powerful and highly fast horses with his mace. dṛṣṭvā tvaṣṭā hataṁ sūtamaśvāṁścha vinipātitān | hatāśvaṁ rathamutsṛjya sūtaṁ ca patitaṁ bhuvi ||3-55-41 Seeing that his charioteer is killed and horses felled, tvaṣṭa left the chariot, having its horses killed and its charioteer felled on earth. visphārayanmahācāpaṁ sthito bhūmāvivācalaḥ | Twanging his great bow tvaṣṭa stood in the battle field like a mountain on the earth. hatāśvasūtaṁ virathaṁ dṛṣṭvā ripumavāsthitam ||3-55-42 Seeing his enemy standing (in the battle field) with his horses killed and devoid of his chariot, jayaśriyā sevyamāno dīpyamāna ivānalaḥ | mayaḥ kālāntakaprakhyaścāpapāṇiradṛśyata ||3-55-43 the one who is served by the prosperous victory, blazing like the god of fire, maya, terrible like slayer of Time (the god of death), was seen holding the bow in his hands. prādahaddevasainyāni dāvāgniriva kānanam | tvaṣṭuḥ so'kṣipatātyugrānnārācāṁstigmatejasaḥ ||3-55-44 He (maya) burned the army of deva-s like the wild fire burns the forest. He (maya) shot the terrible, pointed and splendorous arrow at tvaṣṭa. caturdaśa śilādhautāntsāyakānvividhākṛtīn | te papustasya sainasya śoṇitam rukmabhūṣaṇāḥ ||3-55-45 āśīviṣā iva kruddhā bhujaṅgāḥ kālachoditāḥ | He shot fourteen arrows, of various shapes, sharpened on grindstone. The arrows, decorated with gold, drank the blood of the army, like angry and poisonous serpents, prompted by Time. Te kṣitiṁ samavartanta shobhante rudhirokṣitāḥ ||3-55-46 ardhapraviṣṭā saṁrabdhā bilānīva mahoragāḥ | They (the arrows) reached the earth, blazing, decorated by blood, like great serpents, entering their holes, mid-way, with anger. taṁ pratyavidhyattvaṣṭā tu jāmbūnadavibhūśitaiḥ ||3-55-47 caturdaśabhiratyugrairnārācairabhidhārayan | Opposing him, tvaṣṭa shot fourteen highly terrible arrows, decorated with gold, capable of tearing the body. te tasya daityasya bhujaṁ savyaṁ nirbhidya patriṇaḥ ||3-55-48 vidārya viviśurbhūmiṁ pannagā iva vegataḥ | Those arrows split the left arm of the son of diti and entered the earth by splitting it like fast moving serpents. te prakāśanta nārācāḥ pravishanto vasuṁdharām ||3-55-49 astaṁ gacchantamādityaṁ pravishanta ivāṁśavaḥ | Those arrows sparkled as they entered the earth, like rays entering the setting sun in the evening. mayastribhirathānarcchattvaṣṭāraṁ tu patatribhiḥ ||3-55-50 suparṇavegairvikṛtairjvaladbhiḥ prāṇanāśanaiḥ | maya then shot three arrows at tvaṣṭa, having the speed of the one with golden wings (garuḍa), distorted , blazing and capable of destroying life. tvaṣṭātha mayanirmuktaiḥ sāyakairarditaḥ prabhuḥ ||3-55-51 apayāto raṇaṁ hitvā vrīḍayābhisamanvitaḥ | tvaṣṭa, the lord, his body split by the arrows released by maya, left the battle field, highly humbled (by maya in the battle). taṁ tatra hatasūtaṁ ca bhujaṅga iva nirviṣam ||3-55-52 tvaṣṭāraṁ virathaṁ kṛtvā muditaḥ sa tu dānavaḥ | killing the charioteer of tvaṣṭa, like a serpent without poison, making tvaṣṭa abandon his chariot, the son of danu (maya) became happy. visphāryamāṇo ruciraṁ cāpaṁ rukmāṅgadaṁ dṛḍhaṁ ||3-55-53 raṇe vyatiṣṭhaddaityendro jvalanniva hutāśanaḥ | Twanging the strong powerful bow, decorated by gold, the indra of the sons of diti, stood in the battle field blazing like the one who eats oblations (lord of fire). pulomā tu balaślāghī dṛpto dānavasattamaḥ ||3-55-54 rathe śvetahayeneha sārdhaṁ yuddhyati vāyunā | pulomā, the one who is praised by the powerful, the proud, the best among the sons of danu fought against the god of wind (vāyu), having a chariot yoked with white horses. sarveṣāmeva bhūtānāṁ yaḥ prāṇaḥ kathyate dvijaiḥ ||3-55-55 balinā kālakalpena vāyunā saha saṅgataḥ | pulomā fought against the powerful god of wind (vāyu), equal in splendor with the god of death, the one who is praised by the twice-borns as the soul of all beings. pulomnastatra pavanaḥ śrutvā jyātalaniḥsvanam ||3-55-56 nāmṛṣyata yathā matto gajaḥ pratigajasvanam | The god of wind heard the sound of the bow string of puloma and could not bear it like an elephant in rut can not bear the sound of the opponent elephant. daityacāpachyutairbāṇaiḥ prāccādyanta disho daśa ||3-55-57 raśmijālairivārkasya vitataṁ sāmbaraṁ jagat | The arrows released from the bow of the son of diti (puloma) covered all the ten directions like the rays of the sun covering the entire sky and the world. sa tāmranayanaḥ kruddhaḥ shvasanniva mahoragaḥ ||3-55-58 vṛto daityaśatairvāyū raśmivāniva bhāskaraḥ | The angry son of diti, (puloma), having red eyes, breathing like a great serpent shot arrows and covered the god of wind like the sun covers the sky with rays. daityacāpabhujotsṛṣṭāḥ śarā barhiṇavāsasaḥ ||3-55-59 rukmapuṅkhāḥ prakāśante haṁsāḥ śreṇīkṛtā iva | The arrows released from the bow and arms of the son of diti, having the wings of peacock, sparkled, with golden knots, like a group of swans. cāpadhvajapatākābhyaḥ śastrā dīptamukhāśchyutāḥ ||3-55-60 prāptavantaścha dṛśyante daityasyāpatataḥ śarāḥ | The blazing arrows released from the bow having flag and flagstaff, the arrows shot by the son of diti (puloma) were seen arriving as weapons. evaṁ sutīkṣnānkhacarāṣchalabhāniva pāvake ||3-55-61 suvarṇāvikṛtāṁścitrānmumocha ditijaḥ śarān | Thus the son of diti (puloma) released sharp and strange arrows decorated with gold, moving in the sky, like butterflies falling in the fire. tamantakamiva kruddhamāpatantaṁ sa mārutaḥ ||3-55-62 tyaktvā prāṇānatikramya vivyādha navabhiḥ śaraiḥ | As the angry son of diti (puloma) arrived like the god of death, the god of wind (māruta), crossing the limit of leaving his life (fighting for his life), released nine arrows. tasya vegamasaṁhāryam dṛṣṭvā vāyuḥ sanātanaḥ ||3-55-63 uttamaṁ javamāsthāya vyadhamatsāyakavrajān | The eternal god of wind, seeing his speed which cannot be destroyed, taking up the best speed, broke the group of arrows. tejo vidhamya balavāṣcharajālāni mārutaḥ ||3-55-64 vivyādha daityaṁ viṁśatyā viśikhairnataparvabhiḥ | The powerful god of wind (māruta), broke the splendor and the group of arrows. He then shot twenty arrows having sharp tips at the son of diti (puloma). marudgaṇānāṁ pravarā daśa divyā mahaujasaḥ ||3-55-65 sādhu sādhviti vegena siṁhanādaṁ pracakrire | The best ten among the divine followers of the god of wind, having great splendor said, "well done, well done", and quickly roared like lion. tasmintsamutthite shabde tumule lomaharṣaṇe ||3-55-66 abhyadhāvanta ditijāḥ paulomāḥ krodhamūrcchitāḥ | As the highly exciting tumultuous sound was produced, the sons of diti, the followers of puloma, excited by anger ran towards the god of wind. te samāsādya pavanaṁ samāvṛṇvaṣcharottamaiḥ ||3-55-67 parvataṁ vāridhārābhiḥ prāvṛṣīva balāhakāḥ | They covered the god of wind (pavana) with the best of arrows, like the water bearing clouds cover the mountain showering rain. te pīḍayantaḥ pavanaṁ kruddhāḥ sapta maharathāḥ ||3-55-68 prajāsaṁharaṇaṁ ghorāḥ somaṁ sapta grahā iva | The angry seven great chariot fighters (followers of puloma) oppressed the god of wind (pavana) like the seven planets oppress the moon, at the terrible time of destroying all the beings (end of yuga). tato dakṣiṇamakṣobhyaṁ nānāratnavibhūṣitam ||3-55-69 karaṁ gajakarākāramudyamya yudhi mārutaḥ | Then in the battle, the god of wind (māruta) raised his left hand having the shape of the trunk of an elephant, which cannot be excited and decorated with varieties of jewels, teṣāṁ mūrdhasu daityānāṁ pātayāmāsa vīryavān ||3-55-70 nihitā vāyuvegena tena sapta mahārathāḥ | and the valiant god of wind let it fall on the heads of the sons of diti. All the seven chariot fighters were killed with the speed of wind. tyaktvā prāṇānpulomā tu vivyādha navabhiḥ śaraiḥ ||3-55-71 pradarpitamasaṁhāryaṁ dṛṣṭvā vāyuṁ sanātanam | Then, seeing the eternal god of wind proud and un-destroyable, puloma, abandoning his (desire for) life, shot nine arrows. asaṣchintya suraughāṁstāṣjvalitāṁścha pulomataḥ ||3-55-72 teṣāṁ vidārya tejaṁsi dānavānāṁ mahātmanām | Then without considering the group of blazing arrows shot by puloma, the god of wind destroyed the splendor of the great souls, the sons of danu. śoṇitāklinnamukuṭā gairikāgrā ivādrayaḥ ||3-55-73 te bhinnavarmāsthibhujāḥ patanto bhānti dānavāḥ | mātaṅgayūthasaṁbhagnāḥ puṣpitā iva pādapāḥ ||3-55-74 Splashing blood on their headgear, the dazzling sons of danu, like mountains having brown peaks, fell down, with their shield, bones arms broken, like flowering trees broken by a herd of elephants. teṣāṁ vidāritairdehairdānavānāṁ mahātmanām | tataḥ prāvartata nadī raudrarūpā bhayāvahā ||3-55-75 Due to the split bodies of the great souls, the sons of danu, a terrible river of blood started flowing there. prasravantī raṇe raktaṁ bhīrūṇāṁ bhayavardhinī | devadaityagajāśvānāṁ rudhiraughapariplutā | In the battle field, blood started flowing, full with the blood of groups of deva-s, the sons of diti, elephants and horses, increasing the fear of the cowards. raṇabhūmirabhūdraudrā tatra tatra sahasraśaḥ ||3-55-76 saṁbhūtā gatasattvaishcha yakṣarākṣasakhecharaiḥ | The battle field became terrible everywhere. The yakṣa-s, rākṣasa-s and those who move in the sky, in thousands, became lifeless. sānugaiḥ sapatākaiścha sopāsaṅgarathadhvajaiḥ ||3-55-77 śīrṇakumbhaistathā nāgairghanṭābhistu vibhūṣitaiḥ | The followers, along with flags, quivers, chariots, flagstaff, elephants with broken foreheads decorated with bells, suvarṇapuṅkhairjvalitairnārācaistigmatejasaiḥ ||3-55-78 devadānavanirmuktaiḥ saviṣairuragairiva | sharp blazing arrows with splendor having golden knots shot by deva-s and the sons of danu, like poisonous serpents, prāsatomaranārācaiḥ śaktikhaḍgaparaśvadhaiḥ ||3-55-79 suvarṇavikṛtaiśchapi gadāmusalapaṭṭiśaiḥ | barbed missiles (prāsa), lances (tomara), arrows (nārāca), the spears shakti, swords, axes (parashvadha), maces decorated with golden knots, clubs (musala), spears with sharp points (paṭṭiśa), kanakāṅgadakeyūrairmaṇibhiścha sakuṇḍalaiḥ ||3-55-80 tanutraiḥ satalatraishcha hārairniṣkaiścha śobhanaiḥ | golden bracelets, bracelets, jewels, ear rings, shields, hand gloves, garlands and sparkling golden ornaments for neck, hataishcha ditijaistatra śastrasyandanavarjitaiḥ ||3-55-81 patitairapi viddhaishcha śataśo'tha sahasraśaḥ | sons born to diti who are dead, without weapons and chariots, fallen and scattered in hundreds and thousands, nipātitadhvajaratho hatavājirathadvipaḥ ||3-55-82 vimardo devadaityānāṁ sadṛśaḥ karmaṇā babhau | flagstaffs of the chariots, killed horses and elephants, destroyed chariots - the battlefield sparkled with the results of actions of deva-s and the sons of diti. atha daityasahasreṇa paulomena mahāsuraḥ ||3-55-83 saṁvṛtaḥ pavanaḥ srīmāngadāmusalapāṇinā ||3-55-84 The great demon, pauloma was surrounded by thousands of the sons of diti. The auspicious god of wind (pavana) was surrounded by his followers holding maces and clubs in their hands. te jaghnuḥ śatasāhasrāḥ pavanaṁ dānavottamāḥ | tairvadhyamānaḥ sa babhau samantādarpitaiḥ śaraiḥ ||3-55-85 Hundreds of thousands of the best among the sons of danu attacked the god of wind (pavana). The lord sparkled , surrounded and shot arrows for killing by the demons. hatvāṣṭau tatra yodhānāṁ śatāni pavanaḥ prabhuḥ | kṛtvā mārgaṁ suraśreṣṭho nanāda sumahārathaḥ ||3-55-86 The lord, god of wind, the best among deva-s, created a path by killing eight hundred fighters among those (who surrounded him). The best among chariot fighters roared. adyāpi ca suvistīrṇaḥ panthāḥ saṁdṛśyate divi | nāmnā vāyuratho nāma siddhāḥ pashyanti taṁ divi||3-55-87 Even now that path having great width, named chariot of wind seen and named by siddha-s is seen in heaven. vaiśampāyana uvāca hayagrīvastu ditijaḥ pūṣaṇaṁ prati vīryavān | nanāda sumahānādaḥ siṁhanādaṁ mahārathaḥ ||3-55-88 vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) The valiant son born to diti, hayagrīva, saw the deva pūṣa. The great chariot fighter roared loudly like a lion. visphārya sumahachcāpaṁ hemajālavibhūṣitam | pūṣaṇaṁ ditijo'paśyatkruddho ghoreṇa cakṣuṣā ||3-55-89 Twanging his great bow, decorated with golden ornaments, the son born to diti (hayagrīva) looked at pūṣa angrily with terrible eyes. bhujabhyāmādadānasya saṁdadhānasya vai śarān | muṣchataḥ karṣato vāpi dadṛśustatra nāntaram ||3-55-90 No interval was seen while taking the arrows with hands, fixing on the bow, pulling the bow strings and releasing the arrows. agni cakropamaṁ dīptaṁ maṇḍalīkṛtakārmukam | tadāsīddānavendrasya savyadakṣiṇamasyataḥ ||3-55-91 The bow of the indra (king) of the sons of danu, pulled equally on the right and left sides for releasing the arrows, comparable to a wheel of fire, blazed like whirling torch. rukmapuṅkhaistatastasya cāpamuktaiḥ śitaiḥ śaraiḥ | prāccādyanta śilādhautairdiśaḥ sūryasya ca prabhāḥ ||3-55-92 All the directions and the splendor of sun were covered by the sharp arrows, decorated by golden knots, sharpened on grind stones and released from his bow. tataḥ kanakapuṅkhānāṁ śarāṇāṁ nataparvaṇām ||3-55-93 nabhaścarāṇāṁ nabhasi dṛśyante bahavo vrajāḥ | Then many arrows, with sharp tips and golden knots were seen flying in the sky as many groups. girikūṭanibhāccāpātprabhavantaḥ śarottamāḥ ||3-55-94 śreṇībhūtāḥ prakāśante yāntaḥ śyenā ivāmbare | The best of arrows, powered by the bow, huge like the peak of a mountain sparkled in a row as a row of hawks in the sky. gṛdhrapatrāṣchilādhautānkārtasvaravibhūṣitān ||3-55-95 mahāvegānpraśastāgrānmumocha ditijaḥ śarān | The son born to diti (hayagrīva) released powerful and sharp arrows having the wings of vultures, sharpened on grind stones, decorated with golden knots. tataścāpabaloddhūtāḥ śātakumbhavibhūṣitāḥ ||3-55-96 dehe samavakīryanta pūṣṇaḥ sannihitāḥ śarāḥ | The arrows released with the power of the bow, decorated with gold, split the body of pūṣa. te vyomni rukmavikṛtāḥ saṁprakāśanta sarvaśaḥ ||3-55-97 khadyotā iva gharmānte khe carantaḥ samantataḥ | The arrows decorated with gold sparkled all around in the sky like fireflies circling the sky during the rainy season. śilādhautāḥ prasannāgrāḥ pūṣaṇaṁ siṣichuḥ śarāḥ ||3-55-98 parvataṁ vāridhārābhiryathā prāvṛṣi toyadāḥ | A group of arrows sharpened on the grind stone fell on pūṣa like showers of water rained on a mountain by rain bearing clouds. tataḥ prachcādayāmāsa pūṣaṇaṁ śaravṛṣṭibhiḥ ||3-55-99 parvataṁ vāridhārābhichcādayanniva toyadaḥ | Then the son of diti covered pūṣa by a shower of arrows like rain bearing clouds cover the mountain with shower of water. tataḥ sapūṣṇo'devasya balaṁ vīryaṁ parākramam ||3-55-100 vyāvasāyaṁ ca sattvaṁ ca pashyanti tridaśādbhutam | Then the deva-s saw the wonderful power, valiance, bravery, determination and true nature of pūṣa. tāṁ samudrādivodbhūtāṁ śaravṛṣṭiṁ samutthitām ||3-55-101 nācintayattadā pūṣā daityaṁ cābhyadravadraṇe | pūṣa, not considering the shower of arrows arriving as though from ocean, ran towards the son of diti (hayagrīva) in the battle. hemapṛṣṭhaṁ mahānādaṁ pūṣṇa āsīnmahādhanuḥ ||3-55-102 vikṛtaṁ maṇḍalībhūtaṁ śakrāśanimivāparam | The great bow of puṣa, decorated with gold and having a great sound, took up a circular shape, like another thunderbolt of śakra (indra). tataḥ śarāḥ prādurāsanpūrayanta ivāmbaram ||3-55-103 suvarṇapuṅkhāḥ pūṣṇaste prabhavantaḥ śarāsanāt | Then arrows, having golden knots, powered by the bow of pūśa were seen as though filling the sky. māleva rukmapuṅkhānāṁ vitatā vyomni patriṇām ||3-55-104 prādurāsīnmahāghorā bṛhatī pūṣakārmukāt | A garland of terrible arrows having golden knots was seen in the sky, released from the bow of pūśa. tato vyomni vibhaktāni śarajālāni sarvaśaḥ ||3-55-105 āhatāni vyaśīryanta śaraiḥ sannataparvabhiḥ | Arrows were seen in the sky all around. The arrows with pointed tips struck each other and were destroyed. tataḥ kanakapuṅkhānāṁ cinnānāṁ kaṅkavāsasām ||3-55-106 patatāṁ pātyamānānāṁ khamāsīchcāvṛtaṁ raṇe | The sky was covered with arrows with golden knots and having the wings of heron, seen as fallen and falling in the sky. pūṣā prāpūrayadbāṇairhayagrīvaṁ śilāśitaiḥ ||3-55-107 nāmāṅkairarkasadṛśairdivyahemapariṣkṛtaiḥ | pūṣa covered hayagrīva with arrows sharpened on a grind stone. The arrows marked with name were equal to sun rays and renovated with divine golden engravings. tato vyasṛjadugrāṇi śarajālāni dānavaḥ |V-55-108 amarṣī balavānkruddho didhakṣanniva pāvakaḥ | Then the impatient, powerful, angry son of danu (hayagrīva), blazing like burning fire, shot groups of terrible arrows. pūṣṇastvājau dhvajaṁ caiva patākāṁ dhanurevaca ||3-55-109 raśmīnyoktrāṇi cāśvānāṁ hayagrīvo raṇe'cchinat | hayagrīva cut off the flagstaff, flag and the bow of pūśa as well as the rein controlling the horses in the battle. athāpyaśvānpunarhatvā caturbhiḥ sāyakottamaiḥ ||3-55-110 sārathiṁ sumahātejā rathopasthādapātayat | Then he killed all the four horses with the best of arrows and felled the splendorous charioteer from the chariot. kṛtastu virathaḥ pūṣā hayagrīveṇa saṁyuge ||3-55-111 pūṣā tasya rathābhyāsātsa yayau tena vai jitaḥ | In the battle, hayagrīva made pūśa devoid of chariot. pūṣa defeated by hayagrīva abandoned his chariot and left the battle field. gataḥ śakrarathābhyāśaṁ mukto mṛtyumukhādiva ||3-55-112 pūṣa reached near the chariot of indra as though released from the mouth of death. tatrādbhutamidaṁ bhūyo yuddhaṁ vartata dāruṇam | kṛtapratikṛtaṁ ghoraṁ shambarasya bhagasya ca ||3-55-113 Then there was a terrible and wonderful battle between shambara and bhaga with terrible deeds against each other. saptakiṣkuparīṇāhaṁ dvādaśāratnikārmukam | cāpaṁ cāśaninirghoṣaṁ dṛḍhajyaṁ bhārasādhanam | The bow was having a length of seven kiṣku (1 kiṣku = twentyfour thumbs breadth) decorated with twelve jewels. The bow had strong string with the sound of thunder and capable of bearing the load. vikṣipannakṣasadṛśānvyasṛjatsāyakānbahūn ||3-55-114 krodhasaṁraktanayanaḥ śambaraḥ sarvayogavit | shambara, expert in all kinds of yogas, having eyes red due to anger, released many arrows thick like the axle of a chariot, by pulling the bow string. tena vitrāsyamānāni devasainyāni sarvaśaḥ ||3-55-115 samakampanta bhītāni sindhoriva mahormayaḥ | All the armies of deva-s frightened by him, trembled due to fear like an ocean agitated by great waves. tamāpatantaṁ saṁprekṣya virūpākṣaṁ vibhīṣaṇam ||3-55-116 bhagaḥ prasphuramāṇauṣṭhastvaramāṇo vyadārayat | Seeing the terrible one with deformed eyes arriving in the battle field, bhaga split his lips, split due to anxiety. tato bhago maheṣvāso divyaṁ visphārayandhanuḥ ||3-55-117 avākirandaityagaṇāṣcharajālena cādayan | Then the great archer bhaga, twanging his divine bow scattered the groups of diti's sons, covering them with groups of arrows. tamapyagādbhago daityaṁ tūrṇamasyantamantikāt ||3-55-118 mātaṅgamiva mātaṅgo vṛṣaṁ prati vṛṣo yathā | bhaga fought with the son of diti (shambara) who was nearby and shooting arrows quickly like an elephant fights with an elephant and a bull fights with another bull. tau pragṛhya mahāvegau dhanuṣī bhārasādhane ||3-55-119 prāccādayetāmanyonyaṁ takṣamāṇau raṇe śaraiḥ | Taking up huge, heavy bows having great speed, they covered each other with sharp arrows, in the battle. tayoḥ sutumulaṁ yuddhamāsīdghoraṁ mahāraṇe ||3-55-120 bhagaśambarayorbhīmamaprameyaṁ mahātmanoḥ | The battle between them became tumultuous and terrible in the battle field. The battle between the great souls, bhaga and shambara was terrible and immeasurable (unlimited). atha pūrṇayatotsṛṣṭaiḥ śaraiḥ sannataparvabhiḥ ||3-55-121 vyadārayetāmanyonyaṁ kārṣṇe nirbhidya charmaṇī | Then they broke and split each other's shields by shooting arrows released by pulling strings fully. tau tu vikṛtasarvāṅgau rudhireṇa samukṣitau |3-55-122 saṁprekṣyamāṇau rathināvubhau paramadurmadau | Both the great chariot fighters, with the highest false pride, getting wounded on all limbs and drenched in blood, looked at each other. takṣamāṇau sitairbāṇairna vīkṣitumaśaknutām ||3-55-123 Both wounding by shooting sharp arrows were unable to look at each other. atha vivyādha samare tvaramāṇo'suro bhagam | nārācaiḥ krodhatāmrākṣaḥ kālāntakayamopamaḥ ||3-55-124 Then the demon shambara, having red eyes due to anger, comparable to the slayer of the god of death, shot a group of iron arrows at bhaga in the battle. garutmāniva cākāśe pothayāno mahoragam | nārācā nyapatandehe tūrṇaṁ śambarachoditāḥ ||3-55-125 Like garutmān (garuḍa) who tortures a great serpent in the sky, the iron arrows shot by shambara fell on bhaga's body. tānantarikṣe nārācānbhagaściccheda patribhiḥ | bhaga cut off the iron arrows by shooting arrows in the sky. jvalantamachalapreṣyaṁ vaiśvānarasamaprabham ||3-55-126 tato bhagaṁ chatuḥṣaṣṭyā vivyādhāsurasattamaḥ | śilīmukhairmahāvegairjāmbūnadavibhūṣitaiḥ ||3-55-127 The best among demons (shambara) shot sixty-four arrows having high speed, decorated with gold and sharpened on grinding stone at bhaga, who appeared like a blazing mountain having the splendor of the god of fire. tadā tatsuciraṁ kālaṁ yuddhaṁ samamivābhavat | shambarasya ca māyābhirnādṛśyata tato'mbaram ||3-55-128 The equal battle between them lasted for a long time. Due to the illusion created by shambara, the sky became invisible. dorbhyāṁ chikṣipataścāpaṁ raṇe viṣṭabhya tiṣṭhataḥ | śrūyate dhanuṣaḥ shabdo visphūrjitamivāśaneḥ ||3-55-129 He stood in the battle field, pulling the string of the bow forcefully. The sound of his bow, twanged powerfully was heard like thunderbolt. sa bhagasya hayānhatvā sārathiṁ ca mahāhave | abhyavarṣaccharairenaṁ parjanya iva vṛṣṭimān ||3-55-130 shambara, by showering arrows, killed the horses and the charioteer of bhaga in the great battle, like rain clouds showering rain. na tasyāsīdanirbhinnaṁ gātre dvyaṅgulamantaram | bhagadevasya daityena śambareṇāstraghātinā ||3-55-131 As the son of diti, shambara, shot arrows, no space of two fingers un-split by arrows, was left on the body of the deva bhaga. daityasya cādbhutam divyamastramastreṇa dhārayan | bhaga stopped the wonderful divine arrows shot by the son of diti (shambara) by shooting arrows. māyāyuddhena māyāvī śambaro'stamayo'bhavat ||3-55-132 avaṣchayadbhagaṁ daityo māyābhirlāghavena ca | shambara, the expert of illusion became a setting mountain by illusionary battle and the son of diti confused bhaga with illusion as well as swiftness. bhagastasya rathaṁ sāśvaṁ śaravarṣairavākirat ||3-55-133 sahasramāyo dyutimāndevasenāṁ niṣūdayan | shambara, having thousands of illusions, the splendorous one, the slayer of the deva armies, released a shower of arrows on the chariot and horses of bhaga. adṛśyata śaraiśchannaḥ śambaraḥ shatasho raṇe ||3-55-134 adṛśyatpatito bhumau gatachetā ivāsuraḥ | shambara, covered by hundreds of arrows, became invisible in the battle. The demon (shambara) was seen fallen on earth, as if he lost his life. atha sma yudhyate bhūyaḥ śatadhā śailasannibhaḥ ||3-55-135 diśā gajendramārūḍho dṛśyate sa punarbalī | Then the demon, huge like a mountain, was seen again, fighting in hundred parts. He was seen again, mounted on the king of elephant of directions. prādeśamātraścha punaḥ punarbhavati shailavat ||3-55-136 mahāmegha iva śrīmāṁstiryagūrdhvaṁ ca so'bhavat | Again he was seen like the index finger. Then he became huge like a mountain. Then the auspicious demon was seen as a huge cloud, raising up all around. punaḥ kṛtvā virūpāṇi vikṛtāni ca sarvaśaḥ ||3-55-137 sarvāṁ bhīṣayate senāṁ devānāṁ bhīmadarśanaḥ | Then, taking up distorted forms all around, the one terrible to see, terrified the army of devas. te bhītāḥ prapalāyante siṁhaṁ dṛṣṭvā mṛgā yathā | They ran away (from the battle field), terrified, like deer terrified by seeing elephant. tataḥ so'nyaṁ varaṁ dehaṁ kṛtvā prāṁśutaraṁ punaḥ ||3-55-138 gacchatyūrdhvagātiṁ ghoro diśaḥ shabdena pūrayan | Then taking up another best body, very tall, the terrible demon rose up, filling all directions with sound. nabhastalagataścāpi varṣate vāsavo yathā ||3-55-139 saṁvartakāmbudaprakhyaḥ pūrayanpṛthivītalam | Reaching the sky, he showered arrows like vāsava (indra) showers rain from the rain clouds at the end of the era, filling the surface of earth. saṁvartako'nalaścaiva bhūtvā bhīmaparākramaḥ ||3-55-140 śatavartmā shatashikho dadāha ca punaḥ surān | The performer of high valiant deeds, appearing as the god of fire at the end of era, with his hundred heads, burned the deva-s again in hundred ways. muhurtāccha mahāśailaḥ śataśīrṣā śatodaraḥ ||3-55-141 adṛśyata divastambhaḥ śataśṛṅga ivācalaḥ | Within a moment, he appeared as a great mountain, having hundred peaks and hundred bellies. He was seen in the sky like a pillar, like a mountain having hundred peaks. ye'nye daityāścha sādhyāścha ye ca vishve ca devatāḥ ||3-55-142 kṣipantyastrāṇi divyāni tāni so'grasatāsuraḥ | The other aditya-s, siddha-s and the deva-s of the universe, released divine arrows. The demon (shambara) captured all the arrows. yudhyamānaścha samare sarathaḥ so'surottmaḥ ||3-55-143 gandharvanagarākārastatraivāntaradhīyata | The best among the demons, huge, having the form of the city of gandharva fighting the battle, disappeared from the battle field along with his chariot. te bhītāḥ samudīkṣanta tridaśā bhīmavikramāḥ ||3-55-144 sahasramāyaṁ samare śambaraṁ citrayodhinam | deva-s of high valiance, looked up terrified at shambara, the expert fighter, the one having thousands of illusions. sa bhago bhayasaṁtrasto dānavendrasya saṁyuge ||3-55-145 rathaṁ tyaktvā mahābhāgo mahendraṁ śaraṇaṁ gataḥ | bhaga, the highly fortunate one, terrified in the battle, by the fear of the king of the sons of danu (shambara), abandoned his chariot and sought the refuge of the great indra. parājitya tu taṁ devaṁ dānavendraḥ pratāpavān ||3-55-146 gato yatra mahātejā jātavedā mahāprabhaḥ | The splendorous shambara, the indra of the sons of danu, defeating the deva (bhaga) went to the place were, jātaveda, the highly splendorous god of fire was. sa vahnirvāgbhirugrābhiḥ kruddhastarjayate balī | bhavāmyeṣa hi te mṛtyurityuktvāntardhīyata ||3-55-147 The powerful demon, becoming angry, oppressed the god of fire with terrible words. Saying that "I will become your death", he disappeared from there. vaiśampāyana uvāca etasminnantare bhūtvā brāhmaṇendro mahābalaḥ | jaghāna somaḥ śītāstro dānavānāṁ chamūṁ raṇe ||3-55-148 vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) During this time, the highly powerful indra of brāhmins, soma, arrived in the battle field. He killed the army of the sons of danu with cold arrows in the battle. kailāsaśikharākāro dyutimadbhirgaṇairvṛtaḥ | avadhīddānavāndṛṣṭvā daṇḍapāṇirivāntakaḥ ||3-55-149 The moon, having the form of the peaks of kailāsa mountain, splendorous, along with followers, holding a staff in his hand like the god of death, seeing the sons of danu, killed them. pothayadrathavṛndāni vājivṛndāni vai prabhuḥ | daityeṣu vicharaṣchrīmānyugānte kālavadbalī ||3-55-150 The auspicious, powerful lord roamed among the sons of diti, oppressing the groups of chariots and horses like the god of death at the end of the era. so'marṣādrathajālāni uruvegena candramāḥ | dadāha dānavānsarvāndāvāgniriva choditaḥ ||3-55-151 The lord candrama, oppressed the groups of chariots by the speed of his thighs. He burned all the sons of danu, like a wild fire. mṛdanrathebhyo rathino gajebhyo gajayodhinaḥ | sādinaścāśvapṛṣṭhebhyo bhūmau cāpi padātinaḥ ||3-55-152 He oppressed the chariot fighters mounted on the chariots, elephant fighters mounted on elephants, horse riders mounted on horses and foot soldiers on earth. śītenavyadhamatsarvānvāyurvṛkṣānivaujasā | candramāḥ sumahātejā dānavānām mahācamūm ||3-55-153 The highly splendorous lord candrama, oppressed the great army of the sons of danu, oppressed all with a cold wind, like a cool wind oppresses the trees. tadastramabhavattasya pradigdhaṁ śatruśoṇitaiḥ | pinākamiva rudrasya kruddhasyābhighnataḥ paśūn ||3-55-154 His arrows became wet with the blood of his enemies, like the trident (pināka) of angry rudra (shiva) became wet on killing the animals. yugāntakopamaḥ śrīmāndaityeṣu vyacharadbalī, | āvārya mahatīṁ senāṁ prādravantīṁ punaḥ punaḥ ||3-55-155 The powerful auspicious lord, comparable to the god of death at the end of eras, roamed among the sons of diti, scattering the great army, fleeing from the battle field again and again. candraṁ mṛtyumivāyāntaṁ dṛṣṭvā yodhā visiṣmiyuḥ | The fighters became wonderstruck, seeing the candrama like the god of death. yato yataḥ prakṣipati śiśirāstraṁ tamonudaḥ ||3-55-156 tatastato vyaśīryanta daityasainyāni saṁyuge | Wherever the destroyer of darkness shoots the arrow of cold, the army of the sons of diti broke up there in the battle. vyadārayatsa sainyāni svabalenābhisaṁvṛtaḥ ||3-55-157 grasamānamanīkāni vyāditasyamivāntakam | He split the great army with his power, swallowing the army like the god of death, with his mouth wide open. taṁ tathā bhīmakarmāṇaṁ gṛhītāstraṁ mahāhave ||3-55-158 dṛṣṭvā śaśāṅkamāyāntaṁ daityābhaṁ candrabhāskarau | Seeing the one having the mark of hare (candrama), the performer of terrible deeds arriving in the battle field, two sons of diti named candra and bhāskara, took up arrows and, tālamātrāṇi cāpāni karṣamāṇau mahābalau ||3-55-159 cādayetāṁ śaraiścandraṁ vṛṣṭimantāvivāmbudau | pulling the strings of the bows, huge like palm trees, both the powerful demons covered the lord candrama with showers of arrows, like water bearing clouds shower rain. atha visphāryamāṇānāṁ karmukāṇāṁ surāsuraiḥ ||3-55-160 abhavatsumahāśabdo diśaḥ sannādayanniva | Then there was a huge sound of the twanging of the bows of the deva-s and demons, filling all the directions. vinadadbhirmahānāgairheṣamāṇaiścha vājibhiḥ ||3-55-161 bherīśaṅkhaninādaiścha tumulaṁ sarvato'bhavat | The trumpeting by great elephants, the roaring of horses and the playing of trumpets and conches made the battle field noisy and tumultuous all around. yuyutsavaste saṁrabdhā jayagṛddhā yaśasvinaḥ ||3-55-162 anyonyamabhigarjanto goṣṭheṣviva mahāvṛṣāḥ | Those fighting each other, seeking victory and fame, fought against each other roaring like great bulls in a cattle shed. śirasāṁ pātyamānānāṁ samare niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ ||3-55-163 aśmavṛṣṭirivākāśe hyabhavatsenayostathā | As heads were fallen during the battle with sharp arrows, it appeared like a shower of rocks in the sky among both armies. kuṇḍaloṣṇīṣadhārīṇi jātarūpasrajāṁsi ca ||3-55-164 patitāni sma dṛśyante śirāṁsi raṇamūrdhani | Heads wearing ear rings, head gear and golden garlands were seen fallen down in the battle field. viśikhairmāthitairgātrairbāhubhiścha sakārmukaiḥ ||3-55-165 sahastābharaṇaiścānyairviccinnai rudhirokṣitaiḥ | Bodies oppressed by arrows, arms holding the bows, hands wearing bracelets drenched in blood, were seen scattered in the battle field. kavacairāvṛtairgātrairurubhiśchandanokṣitaiḥ ||3-55-166 mukhaishcha candrasaṅkāśaistaptakuṇḍalabhūśaṇaiḥ | Bodies covered by shields, thighs sparkling with sandalwood paste, faces beautiful like the moon decorated with sparkling ear rings -
