Parva 3 Chapter 61: devāsurayuddhe viprachittivaruṇayoryuddham - viprachitti takes on varuṇa

vaiśampāyana said: viprachitti, the foremost among the sons of diti, becoming angry, shot blazing arrows terrible like great serpents at the eternal lord of water, varuṇa. sa dahyamāno daityena dīptaḥ śaragabhastibhiḥ | nābhyajānata kartavyaṁ saṅgrāme sa jaleśvaraḥ ||3-61-2 The lord of water (varuṇa) who was burned by the blazing arrows shot by the son of diti, did not know what is to be done in the battle. sarvalokeshvarasyeva parameṣṭhī prajāpatiḥ | na śaknotyagrataḥ sthātuṁ viprachitterjalādhipaḥ ||3-61-3 Just as the superior lord, the lord of all beings is unable to stand in front of the lord of all worlds, the lord of water was unable to stand in front of viprachitti. vajro nāma mahāvyūho nirbhayaḥ sarvatomukhaḥ | taṁ vyūhya pratyayudhyanta dānavā devavāhinīṁ ||3-61-4 The sons of danu, having no fear, made a formation of army named vajra, a great formation (facing the enemy) on all sides and fought against the army of devas. vahnijvālāsamaṁ tatra ravimaṇḍalasannibham | mukhamābhāti daityasya viprachittermahātmanaḥ ||3-61-5 The face of the splendorous son of diti, viprachitti, the great soul, sparkled equal to the flames of fire, like the blazing sphere of sun. varuṇastu mahātejā viprachittiṁ mahāsuram | pradahanniva tejobhirjigīṣuḥ pratyavaikṣata ||3-61-6 varuṇa, having great splendor, attempting to achieve victory looked at the great demon viprachitti as though to burn him with splendor. sragdāmamālābharaṇaḥ keyūrāṅgadabhūṣaṇaḥ | jagrāha parighaṁ daityaḥ kailāsaśikharopamam ||3-61-7 Wearing a garland of flowers, decorated by bracelets on his upper arms, the son of diti (viprachitti) took up a huge iron bludgeon studded with iron (parigha) comparable to the peak of mountain kailāsa. pinaddhaṁ kāṣchanaiḥ paṭṭairhemamālinamāyasam | yamadaṇḍopamaṁ ghoraṁ daityānāṁ bhayanāśanam ||3-61-8 bhramayāmāsa saṅkruddho mahāśakradhvajopamam | Becoming angry, the great demon viprachitti whirled the iron bludgeon, made of iron, decorated by golden knots and a golden garland, comparable to the staff of the lord of death, terrible, capable of destroying the fears of all the sons of diti, comparable to the grand flagstaff of indra, the king of devas. vinanāda vivṛttāsyo viprachittirmahāsuraḥ ||3-61-9 The great demon viprachitti roared aloud, opening his mouth widely. sa kaṇṭhasthena niṣkeṇa bhujasthairapi cāṅgadaiḥ | kuṇḍalābhyāṁ vicitrābhyāṁ bhrājate kāṣchanasrajā ||3-61-10 He wore a golden ornament on his neck, bracelets on his upper arms and beautiful ear rings on his ears. He sparkled with a golden garland. dānavo bhūṣaṇairbhāti parigheṇāyasena ca | yathendradhanuṣā meghaḥ savidyutstanayitnumān ||3-61-11 The son of danu sparkled with his iron bludgeon decorated with ornaments like a huge thunder cloud shines with lightning and rainbow (bow of indra). prasphuratparighāstreṇa vātaskandhānmahāsvanaḥ | jajvāla ca sadhūmārchiḥ sāṅkarṣaṇa ivānalaḥ ||3-61-12 The roaring great demon produced wind by whirling his iron bludgeon. He sparkled like the fire at the end of era, blazing with smoke. vidhyādharagaṇaiḥ sārdhaṁ gandharvanagarairapi | saha chaivāmarāvatyā siddhalokaistathā saha ||3-61-13 grahanakṣatrarachitaṁ sārkacandravibhūṣitam | daityendraparighoddhūtaṁ bhramatīva nabhastalam ||3-61-14 Along with the groups of vidyādhara, the city of gandharva in the sky, the city of amarāvati, the auspicious world of siddha-s, the planets and the stars, decorated by the sun and moon, the sky appeared like whirling in the wind produced by the iron bludgeon of the king of the sons of diti. durāsadaḥ susaṁjajṣe parighābharaṇakṣamaḥ | surendhano'surendrāgniryugāntāgnirivotthitaḥ ||3-61-15 The son of diti, decorated by the ornament of the iron bludgeon became difficult to be defeated. The one whose fuel was deva-s (the one who killed deva-s), the king of demons blazed like the rising fire at the end of era. tridaśā varuṇaścaiva na śekuḥ spandituṁ bhayāt | tatrāsīnnirbhayastvekaḥ kaushiko vāsavaḥ prabhuḥ | The deva-s as well as varuṇa were unable to move due to fear. There is one lord, vāsava (indra), kaushika, who was able to move without fear. bhāskarapratimaṁ ghoraṁ parighaṁ raudradarshanam ||3-61-16 pātayāmāsa senāyāṁ jaleshasya sa dānavaḥ | The son of danu made the iron bludgeon, terrible like the sun, fierce to see, fall on the army of the lord of water. patatā tena saṅgrāme jaleshasya mahātmanaḥ ||3-61-17 bhūtānāṁ śatasāhasraṁ parighena samāhatam | When it fell down on the army during the battle, one hundred thousand of the beings of the great soul, the lord of water, were killed by the iron bludgeon. teṣāṁ gātrāṇi cāsādya vyaśīryanta sahasraśaḥ ||3-61-18 viśīryamāṇaṁ vibabhāvulkāśatamivāmbare | Thousands of their bodies were smashed by the iron bludgeon. The sky appeared scattered with many meteors falling. bhūyaśchainaṁ tadā''bhrāmya varuṇāya nyapātayat ||3-61-19 The demon again whirled the iron bludgeon and made it fall on varuṇa. pātyamāne tadā tasmiṣcharīre vāruṇe tadā | sa bhinnaḥ parigho ghoro devagātre vyaśīryata ||3-61-20 As it fell down on the body of varuṇa, the destroying, terrible iron bludgeon was destroyed by striking at the body of deva. śīryamāṇasya cūrṇāni khadyotā iva cāmbare | The iron bludgeon was destroyed and scattered as powder like birds in the sky. sa tu tena prahāreṇa na cacāla jalādhipaḥ ||3-61-21 parigheṇa hataḥ saṅkhye yathā vajrahato'chalaḥ | Struck by the iron bludgeon, the king of water (varuṇa) was not moved. The one who was struck by the iron bludgeon in the battle was unmoved like a mountain struck by indra's thunderbolt. svasainyeṣvapi bhagneṣu bhinnadeheṣu cāhave ||3-61-22 muhūrtamabhavatkṣobhyamapāṁpatiramarṣaṇaḥ | With the destruction of his army and the splitting of his body in the battle, the raging lord of water (varuṇa) was agitated for a moment. so'marṣaṁ ca samāpanno varuṇo'mitavikramaḥ ||3-61-23 sarvasaṁhāramakarotsvapakṣasyārimardanaḥ | (see nīlakaṇṭha commentary) varuṇa of unlimited valiance, controlled his rage. The oppressor of enemies reassembled all his side. sa sāgaraiścaturbhiścha vṛto dīptaiścha pannagaiḥ ||3-61-24 śaṅkhamuktāmaṇichito bibhrattoyamayaṁ vapuḥ | Surrounded by all the four oceans and blazing serpents, the one who has a sparkling water body decorated by conches and pearls-gem, pāṇḍuroddhūtavasano nānāratnavibhūṣitaḥ ||3-61-25 varuṇaḥ pāśadhṛkchrīmānkūrmamīnasamākulaḥ | the one who swings his white garment, the one who is decorated with many ornaments, the auspicious varuṇa, the one who holds the rope, the one who is with tortoises and fish, varuṇastu tadā kruddhastānnirīkṣya svasainikān ||3-61-26 uvāca dṛṣṭvā yudhyadhvaṁ dānavānāṁ jighāṁsayā | the lord varuṇa, becoming angry, seeing his own army, said: Fight for killing the sons of danu. ahamenaṁ haniṣyāmi bhayaṁ muktvā tu yudhyata ||3-61-27 I shall kill him. You fight the battle, leaving your fear. tataste pannagāḥ sarve mahārṇavajalāśrayāḥ | jaghnurdaityānraṇamukhe nadanto jayagṛddhinaḥ ||3-61-28 Then all the serpents, who live in the great ocean, the water body, roared, yearning for victory and killed the sons of diti in the battle. te tu nālīkanārācairgadābhirmusalairtathā | abhyaghnandānavānhṛṣṭā muditā varuṇānugāḥ ||3-61-29 They, the followers of varuṇa, killed the sons of danu happily, with spears (nālīka), iron arrows (narāca), maces (gada) and clubs (musala). viprachittistu saṅkruddho mahābalaparākramaḥ | pannagānāṁ śarīrāṇi vyadhamadyuddhadurmadaḥ ||3-61-30 The great powerful valiant viprachitti became angry. The one having a false pride of battle, broke the bodies of the serpents. garuḍenāpi cāstreṇa pannagāndānavotttamaḥ | samare ghātayāmāsa garuḍaḥ pannagāśanaiḥ ||3-61-31 The best among the sons of danu, killed the serpents in the battle by the garuḍa weapon like the eater of serpents garuḍa kills the serpents. sa śaraiḥ sūryasaṅkāśaiḥ śātakumbhavibhūṣitaiḥ | pannagānsamare vīraḥ pramamātha sudurjayān ||3-61-32 The valiant oppressed the serpents, difficult to conquer, in the battle by arrows decorated with golden knots, blazing like sun rays. samare bhinnagātrāste pannagāḥ śarapīḍitāḥ | peturmathitasarvāṅgā gajā iva mahāgajaiḥ ||3-61-33 The serpents oppressed by the arrows in the battle, with their bodies split, fell down with their bodies cut like elephants struck by great elephants. tapantaṁ tamivādityaṁ dīptairbāṇagabhastibhiḥ | abhyadhāvata saṅkruddhaḥ samare varuṇaḥ prabhuḥ ||3-61-34 While they were burning with blazing arrows, like the blazing sun, lord varuṇa, becoming angry, arrived at the battle field running. tatastu dānavāstatra bhinnadehāḥ sahasraśaḥ | vyathitā vidravanti sma disho daśa vichetasaḥ ||3-61-35 Then thousands of the sons of danu with their bodies split, became distressed and ran away in all the ten directions, losing their mind. indrasyārthe parākramya varuṇastyaktajīvitaḥ | vinardamano yuyudhe samare pāśabhṛdvaraḥ ||3-61-36 varuṇa, abandoning his life force, showed his valiance for the sake of indra. The best among the holders of the rope fought the battle, roaring loudly. varuṇaḥ pannagāścaiva muṣṭibhiḥ samarotkaṭāḥ | abhyavartanta samare viprachittiṁ mahāsuram ||3-61-37 varuṇa with his fists, as well as the battle-excited serpents fought the battle with the great demon vipracīti. tato'straiścha śilābhiścha prāharatsa balotkaṭaḥ | vyapohata mahātejā viprachittirmahāsuraḥ ||3-61-38 Then the great demon, the highly splendorous viprachitti, drove away the powerful enemies by shooting arrows and throwing rocks. tataḥ pāvakasaṅkāśaiḥ sa muktaiḥ śīghragāmibhiḥ | varuṇasya mahāvegānbibheda samare hayān ||3-61-39 Then the great demon viprachitti split the fast moving horses of varuṇa in the battle, by releasing fast moving arrows, forcefully, which blazed like fire. karmaṇā tena mahatā viprachittermahātmanaḥ | agnerājyāhutasyeva tejaḥ samabhivardhata ||3-61-40 Due to that great task, the great soul vprachitti, obtained the splendor equal to the fire, which is given oblation with ghee. sa śaraiḥ sūryasaṅkāśaiḥ sumuktaiḥ śīghragāmibhiḥ | vāruṇīṁ tāṁ mahāsenāṁ nirmamantha mahābalaḥ ||3-61-41 The highly powerful viprachitti oppressed the great army of varuṇa by shooting fast moving arrows with sharp tips, blazing like the sun. kṣiṇāstrāṁ sāyakākrāntāṁ sharajalena mohitām | śūlaśaktyṛṣṭibhinnāṁ ca cakāra rudhirokṣitām ||3-61-42 With his arrows exhausted, distressed by the (enemies') arrows, confused by the group of arrows, split by lances (śūla), spear (shakti), and swords (ṛṣṭi) varuṇa shed blood in the battle. sa śarairvahnisaṅkāśaiḥ sumuktairnataparvabhiḥ | varuṇasya mahāvegānbibheda samare hayān ||3-61-43 The demon viprachitti split the fast moving horses of varuṇa in the battle, with arrows blazing like fire, and having sharp tips. abhidruto'tha daityena sasainyaḥ salilādhipaḥ | mahendraṁ śaraṇaṁ prāpto viprachitterbhayārditaḥ ||3-61-44 Then the lord of ocean (varuṇa) with his army, who was approached by the running son of diti, oppressed by the fear of viprachitti, sought the refuge of the great indra. iti śrīmahābhārate khileṣu harivaṁśe bhaviṣyaparvaṇi vāmane viprachittiyuddhe ekaṣaṣṭitamo'dhyāyaḥ This is the sixty-first chapter of bhaviṣyaparva , harivamsha , khila of mahabhārata , in the manifestation of vāmana , in the deva demon battle , Viprachitti takes on Varuna nīlakaṇṭha commentary · 3-61-12 vātaskandhān vātamayān skandhāvārān paridhīnityarthaḥ | · 3-61-24 sarvasaṁhāraṁ sarveṣāmekīkaraṇam · 3-61-38 vyapohata nirākṛtavan iti śrīmahābhārate khileṣu harivaṁśe bhaviṣyaparvaṇi ṭīkāyāmekaṣaṣṭitamo'dhyāyaḥ
