vaiśampāyana uvāca
niṣprayatneṣu deveṣu trailokye daityapālite |
jaye balerbalavato mayaśambarayostathā ||3-65-1
Translation
vaiśampāyana said:
(O janamejaya!) As the deva-s, abandoned their efforts in the battle field for victory and as bali, the powerful among the powerful, maya and shambara became victorious, and the son of diti (bali) started governing all the three worlds,
sudhāsu dikṣu sarvāsu pravṛtte dharmakarmaṇi |
apavṛtte candramasi ayanasthe divākare ||3-65-2

As all the directions became prosperous and dharma based actions prevailed, as the moon set and the lord of the day (sun) rose and proceeded on his path,
prahrādaśambaramayairanuhrādena caiva hi |
dikṣu sarvāsu guptāsu gagane daityapālite ||3-65-3
as prahrāda, shambara, maya and anuhrāda started protecting all the directions and the sky was being governed by the sons of diti,
daityeṣu makhaśobhāścha svargārthaṁ darshayatsu ca |
as the sons of diti realized the splendor of sacrifices for obtaining the benefits of heaven,
prakṛtisthe tadā loke vartamāne ca satpathe ||3-65-4
as the world, fixed in its own nature was proceeding currently on the good path,
abhāve sarvapāpānāṁ bhāve caiva tathā sthite |
bhāve tapasi siddhānāṁ sarvatrāśramarakṣiṣu ||3-65-5
as all kinds of sins disappeared and the good deeds flourished, as the accomplished ones were firm in penances, as all subjects of the stages (Ashramas - brahmacarya (student), gārhastya (householder), vānaprastha (retired) and sanyāsa (renounced)) were protected everywhere,
catuṣpāde sthite dharme adharme pādavigrahe |
prajāpālanayukteṣu bhrājamāneṣu rājasu ||3-65-6
as the dharma was fixed on all the four legs (penance, cleanliness, kindness and truth) and as all the three legs of adharma are severed (only one leg remaining), as the kings excelled in protecting their subjects,
svadharmasaṁprayukteṣu sarvāśramanivāsiṣu |
abhiṣikto'suraiḥ sarvairdaityarājo balistadā ||3-65-7
as all those belonging to the four stages were doing their duty, all the demons anointed bali as the king of the sons of diti.
hṛṣṭeṣvasurasaṅgheṣu nadatsu muditeṣu ca |
athābhyupagatā lakṣmīrbāliṁ padmāsane sthitā ||3-65-8
As all the groups of demons became happy, as all were shouting and enjoying, the goddess of fortune and beauty, lakṣmi, seated on a lotus flower, came over to bali.
padmodyatakarā devī varadā suramohinī |
The goddess, one who is capable of giving boons, the one who confuses the deva-s, was holding a lotus flower in her hand.
śrīruvāca
bale balavatāṁ śreṣṭha mahārāja mahādyute ||3-65-9
The goddess of prosperity, śrī, said:
O bali! The best among the powerful! O great king! O the one with great splendor!
prītāsmi tava bhadraṁ te devatānāṁ parājaye |
yastvayā yudhi vikramya devarājaḥ parājitaḥ ||3-65-10
I am pleased with you. Let there be good to you in defeating the devas. You defeated the king of deva-s, indra in the battle with your valiance.
dṛṣṭvā te paramaṁ sattvaṁ tato'haṁ svayamāgatā |
nāscaryaṁ dānavaśreṣṭha hiraṇyakaśipoḥ kule ||3-65-11
prasūtasyāsurendrasya tava karmedamīdṛśam |
I came to you on my own, seeing your high principles. O the best among the sons of danu! This work of you, born in the race of hiraṇyakaśipu, the lord of demons, is definitely no wonder!
viśeṣatastvayā rājandaityendraḥ prapitāmahaḥ ||3-65-12
yena bhuktaṁ hi nikhilaṁ trailokyamidamavyayam |
O king! You have excelled your great grandfather, the king of the sons of diti, who had ruled all the three worlds, having no decline.
viśeṣatastava vibho sarve dharmapathe sthitāḥ ||3-65-13
tena trailokyamukhyena bhokṣyasyamitavikrama |
Especially, O lord! All your people stay on the path of dharma. O the one with unlimited valiance! Hence all the three worlds shall prevail without any decline.
evamuktvā hi sā devī lakṣmīrdaityapatiṁ balim ||3-65-14
praviṣṭhā varadā saumyā sarvabhūtamanoramā |
(vaiśampāyana said: O janamejaya!) Saying this, the goddess lakṣmī (goddess of fortune and beauty), the one who gives boons, the gentle goddess, the goddess who makes the minds of all beings happy, came over to bali, the lord of the sons of diti.
śiṣṭāścha devyaḥ pravarā hrīḥ kīrtirdyutireva ca||3-65-15
prabhā dhṛtiḥ kṣamā bhūtirnītirvidyā dayā smṛtiḥ |
kṛtirlajjā tathā medhā lakṣmīrīhā gatistathā ||3-65-16
śrutiḥ prītirilā kīrtiḥ śāntiḥ puṣṭiḥ kriyāstathā |
The other goddesses of splendor, hrī (modesty), kīrti (fame), dyuti (splendor), prabhā (radiance), dhṛti (satisfaction), kṣmā (patience), bhūti (welfare), nīti (prudence), vidyā (knowledge), dayā (kindness), smṛti (remembrance), kṛti (performance), lajjā (modesty), medhā (intelligence), lakṣmī (fortune and beauty), īhā (activity), gati (refuge), shruti (learning), prīti (gratification), ilā (libation - see nīlakaṇṭha commentary), kīrti (fame), śānti (peace), puṣṭi (prosperity) and kriyā (action) also came over to bali, the lord of the sons of diti.
sarvāścāpsaraso divyā nṛtyagītaviśāradāḥ ||3-65-17
patīṁ prāptāḥ sudaiteyaṁ trailokye sacarācare |
All the divine women, the experts of dance and music also came over to the good son of diti, the lord of all the three worlds and all the moving and fixed beings.
prāptamaiśvaryamamitaṁ balinā brahmavādinā ||3-65-18
bali, the observer of principles of brahmā, thus obtained unlimited prosperity.
iti śrīmahābhārate khileṣu harivaṁśe bhaviṣyaparvaṇi vāmanaprādurbhāve paṣchaṣaṣṭitamo'dhyāyaḥ
This is the sixty-fifth chapter of bhaviṣyaparva, harivaṁśa, khila of mahābhārata, in the manifestation of vāmana, on bali's victory, Goddess śrī and others come over to bali
