janamejaya uvāca parājitāḥ surā daityaiḥ kimakurvata vai mune | kathaṁ ca tridivaṁ labdhaṁ bhūyo devairdvijottama ||3-66-1

Translation

janamejaya said: O sage! (O vaiśampāyana!) What did the deva-s, defeated by the sons of diti do? O the best among the twice-borns! How did the deva-s regain the heaven? vaiśampāyana uvāca śrutvā vāṇīṁ tu tāṁ divyāṁ saha devaiḥ surādhipaḥ | prāgdiśaṁ prasthitaḥ śrīmānadityālayamuttamam ||3-66-2 vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) Hearing those divine (body-less) words (in the battle field), the auspicious king of deva-s, along with deva-s proceeded to the direction of east, to the best abode of aditi. (see verses 3-64-22 to 28) prāpyādityālayaṁ śakraḥ kathayāmāsa tāṁ giram | adityāṁ sā yathā yuddhe tena vāṇī purā śrutā ||3-66-3 Arriving at the abode of aditi, śakra (indra) told aditi about the auspicious words, as he heard them before, in the battle field. aditiruvāca yadyevaṁ putra yuśmābhirna shakyo hantumāhave | balirvirochanasutaḥ sarvaishcaiva marudgaṇaiḥ ||3-66-4 aditi said: If it is so, my son, you will not be able to kill bali, the son of virochana, in the battle even with all the groups of the wind gods (maruts). sahasraśirasā hantuṁ kevalaṁ śakyate'suraḥ | tenaikena sahasrākṣa na hyanyena shatakrato ||3-66-5 The demon can be killed only by the one with thousand heads. O the one with thousand eyes! O the one who performed one hundred sacrifices! Only he will be able to kill him and none other. tadvaḥ pṛcchasva pitaraṁ kaśyapaṁ satyavādinaṁ | parājayārthaṁ daityasya balestasya mahātmanaḥ ||3-66-6 Hence ask your father, kashyapa, the one who is fixed on truth, for the defeat of the son of diti, bali, the great soul. tato'dityā saha surāḥ saṁprāptāḥ kaśyapāntikam | apaśyankaśyapaṁ tatra muniṁ divyataponidhim ||3-66-7 (vaiśampāyana continued: O janamejaya!) Then the deva-s, along with aditi, arrived near kashyapa. All of them saw the sage kashyapa, the divine treasure of penance. ādyaṁ devaṁ guruṁ divyaṁ klinnaṁ triṣavaṇāmbubhiḥ | tejasā bhāskarākāraṁ gauramagniśikhāprabham ||3-66-8 They saw the foremost, divine preceptor of deva-s, whose body was wet with water (due to taking bath) thrice. By splendor he was like the sun. His yellow colour was dazzling like the flame of fire. nyastadaṇḍaṁ tapoyuktaṁ baddhakṛṣṇājinottaram | valkalājinasaṁvītaṁ pradīptaṁ brahmavarchasā ||3-66-9 He had abandoned his staff. He was yoked with penance. The upper part of his body was covered with the skin of black antelope. He was wearing the tree-bark and the skin of black antelope. He was blazing with the splendor of brahma. hūtāśamiva dīpyantamājyamantrapuraskṛtam | svādhyāyanirataṁ śāntaṁ vapuṣmantamivānalam ||3-66-10 He was blazing like the partaker of oblations, fire, honoured with the oblations and chanting. He was always engaged in recitation, calm. He appeared like the fire in body form. taṁ brahmavādināṁ śreṣṭhaṁ surāsuraguruṁ prabhum | pratapantamivādityaṁ mārīcaṁ dīptatejasam ||3-66-11 He was the follower of brahma. He was the lord, the best, the preceptor of deva-s and demons. The son of sage mariachi (kashyapa), blazed with splendor like the blazing sun. yaḥ sraṣṭā sarvabhūtānāṁ prajānāṁ patiruttamaḥ | ātmabhāvaviśeṣeṇa tṛtīyo yaḥ prajāpatiḥ ||3-66-12 He was the creator of all beings. He was the foremost lord of beings. He was the third lord of beings (first brahma, second marīchi) with special nature of the soul. tataḥ praṇamya te vīrāḥ sahādityā surarṣabhāḥ | ūcuḥ prāṣjalayaḥ sarve brahmāṇamiva mānasāḥ ||3-66-13 The valiant, the bulls of the deva-s, along with aditi, paid obeisance to sage kashyapa, like the mind born sons pay obeisance to brahma and told him with folded hands: tacchrutaṁ yudhi śakreṇa sarasvatyā samīritaṁ | ajeyastridaśaiḥ sarvairbalirdānavasattamaḥ ||3-66-14 (deva-s said) The words of sarasvati (body-less words) heard by śakra (indra) in the battle field are thus: bali, the best among the sons of danu can not be conquered by the devas. śrutvā tu vacanaṁ teṣāṁ putrāṇāṁ kaśyapastadā | cakāra gamane buddhiṁ brahmalokāya lokakṛt ||3-66-15 (vaiśampāyana continued: O janamejaya!) Hearing the words spoken by his sons, kashyapa, the creator of the world, decided in his mind to go to the world of brahma. kashyapa uvāca gachcāma brahmasadanaṁ brahmaghoṣanināditaṁ | yathāśrutaṁ ca tatraiva brahmaṇe vadatānaghāḥ ||3-66-16 kashyapa said: Let us go the house of brahma, resounded by the sound of brahma. Let us tell the sinless brahma, what you heard in the battle field. vaiśampāyana uvāca tato'dityā saha surā yāntaṁ kaśypamanvayuḥ | prasthitaṁ brahmasadanaṁ devarṣigaṇasevitaṁ ||3-66-17 vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) Then the deva-s, along with aditi, followed kashyapa in the journey to the abode of brahma, served by the groups of deva sages. te muhūrtena saṁprāptā brahmalokaṁ divaukasaḥ | divyaiḥ kāmagamairyānairmahārhaiḥ sumanoharaiḥ ||3-66-18 Within a moment, the deva-s reached the world of brahma using divine, splendid and beautiful carriers, which travel as desired. didṛkṣavaste brahmāṇaṁ tapaso rāśimavyayam | abhyagacchanta vistīrṇāṁ brahmaṇaḥ paramāṁ sabhām ||3-66-19 There they entered the foremost, wide , assembly of brahma, to see brahma, having the wealth of penance without any decline. ṣaṭpadodgītaninadāṁ sāmagītavimiśritām | śreyaskarīmamitraghnīṁ dṛṣṭvā saṣjahṛṣurmudā ||3-66-20 They became happy to see the world of brahma sounding with the songs of bees (having six legs) along with the song of sāma (veda), causing prosperity, destroying the enemies. brāhmaṇaiścha mahabhāgairvedavedāṅgapāragaiḥ | ṛcho bahvṛchamukhyaiścha śikṣāvidbhistathā dvijaiḥ | śabdanirvacanārthaṁ ca preryamāṇapadākṣarāḥ ||3-66-21 There the highly fortunate brāhmins, experts of vedas and vedāṅga-s, experts of many ṛks, experts of teaching, were reciting the vedic mantras, along with the proper pronunciation, expressing the meanings of letters and words. śuśruvuste'maravyāghrā vitateṣu ca karmasu | yajṣavedāṅgaviduṣāṁ padakramavidāṁ tathā ||3-66-22 There, the tigers of the deva-s heard the recitals of the experts of sacrifices and vedāṅga-s, experts of the words in proper order along with rituals. ghoṣeṇa paramarṣīṇāṁ sā babhūva nināditā | yajṣasaṁstavavidbhiścha śikṣāvidbhistathā dvijaiḥ ||3-66-23 The assembly resounded loudly with the sounds of the great sages and brahmins, experts of rituals of sacrifices, and expert teachers. śabdanirvacanārthajṣaiḥ sarvavidyāviśāradaiḥ | mīmāṁsāhitavākyajṣaiḥ sarvavādaviśāradaiḥ ||3-66-24 hṛṣṭapuṣṭasvaraistatra dvijendravalguvādibhiḥ | nāditaṁ brahmasadanaṁ pravaraṁ devasadmavat ||3-66-25 The abode (world) of brahma, resounding with the sounds of those experts of the definition of sounds and meanings, experts of all knowledge, experts of the pleasing words of explanation of vedic texts, experts of all kinds of arguments, the twice borns, who can argue beautifully, having happy and healthy sounds was the best, comparable to the abode of devas. te tatra samanuprāpya śṛṇvanto vai dhvanim surāḥ | pūtānyātmaśarīrāṇi menire tu na saṁśayaḥ ||3-66-26 the deva-s, arriving there, heard those sounds. There is no doubt that they considered that their souls and bodies were purified by the sounds. tūṣṇiṁbhūtā ekachittā brahmanyagatamānasāḥ | vismayotphullanayanā nirīkṣantaḥ parasparam ||3-66-27 Without uttering anything, having a single mind, with their minds concentrated on brahma, with their eyes wide open with wonder, they looked at each other. namaskurvanti ca punarguruṁ lokaguruṁ prabhum | manasaiva suraśreṣṭhāḥ puraskṛtya tu kashyapam ||3-66-28 The best among deva-s, paid obeisance to the preceptor of the world, the lord, keeping kashyapa in front in their minds. punaḥ saṁpūjya paramaṁ vedochcāraṇaniḥsvanam | gambīrodāramadhuraṁ susvaraṁ haṁsagadgadam ||3-66-29 They again worshipped the foremost sound of reciting the veda, deep, kind, sweet and good sound, the utterance of swans. aikyanānātvasaṁyogasamavāyaviśāradaiḥ | lokāyatikamukhyaiścha śuśruvuḥ svanamīritam ||3-66-30 ekatvavāda (the unity of jīvā and īśvara), nānātvavāda (the diversity of the trinity (jīva, īśvara and prakṛti)), saṁyogavāda (union of prakṛti and puruṣa for creation), samavāyavāda (samavāya - sixth category of vaiśeṣika) and lokāyatika (lokāyata - materialism. However, see nīlakaṇṭha commentary) - the deva-s heard the words pronounced by the experts of all knowledge. (Note: see Hindi commentary of Gita Press edition) tatra tatra ca viprendrānniyatānsaṁśitavratān | japahomaparānmukhyāndadṛśuḥ kaśyapātmajāḥ ||3-66-31 The sons of kashyapa (deva-s) saw the indras (kings) of brahmins leading a controlled life, observing penances and engaged in chanting and conducting sacrifices. tasyāṁ sabhāyāmāste sma brahmā lokapitāmahaḥ | surāsuraguruḥ śrīmānvidhivaddevamāyayā ||3-66-32 The auspicious brahma, the great grandfather of the world, the preceptor of deva-s and asura-s is seated in that assembly, as ordained, by the devamāyā. upāsate ca tatrainaṁ prajānāṁ patayaḥ prabhum | dakṣaḥ prachetāḥ pulaho marīchiścha dvijottamaḥ ||3-66-33 The lord is being served by the lords of beings - dakṣa, pracheta, pulaha, marīchi, the best among the twice borns. bhṛguratrirvasiṣṭhaścha gautamo nāradastathā | manurdyaurantarikṣaṁ ca vāyustejo jalaṁ mahī ||3-66-34 bhṛgu, atri, vasiṣṭha, gautama, nārada, manu, dyau, antarīkṣa, the lord of wind (vāyu), fire, water and the earth, śabdasparshau ca rūpaṁ ca raso gandhastathaiva ca | prakṛtiścha vikārāścha yachcānyatkāraṇaṁ mahat ||3-66-35 the sound, touch, shape, taste, smell, nature and emotions as well as other causes, sāṅgopāṅgāścaturvedāḥ sarahasyapadakramāḥ | kriyāścha kratavashcaiva saṅkalpaḥ prāṇa eva ca ||3-66-36 all the four vedas and their aṣga-s and upāṅga-s, along with their secrets and word order, actions, sacrifices, imagination as well as life forces, ete cānye ca bahavaḥ svayambhuvamupasthitāḥ | artho dharmashcha kāmaścha dveṣo darpashcha nityadā ||3-66-37 all these as well as many others were serving the self born. Wealth, dharma, desire, hatred and pride, always, śakro bṛhaspatiścaiva saṁvarto budha eva ca | śanaiścharo'tha rāhuścha grahāḥ sarve hyaśeṣataḥ ||3-66-38 śakra (indra), the preceptor of deva-s, bṛhaspati, saṁvarta as well as budha (son of soma), ṣaturn who moves slowly, rāhu and all the planets without any omission, maruto viśvakarmā ca nakṣatrāṇi ca bhārata | divākaraścha somashcha brahmāṇaṁ samupāsate || 3-66-39 all the groups of marut-s, viśvakarmā, the stars, O the one of bharata race (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued), the lord of the day (sun) and the moon (soma) were serving the lord brahma. sāvitrī durgataraṇī vāṇī saptavidhā tathā | sarvāṇi śrutiśāstrāṇi gāthāścha niyamāstathā | bhāśyāṇi sarvaśāstrāṇi dehavanti viśāṁpate || 3-66-40 O the ruler of earth! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) The goddesses sāvitrī, durgā who helps to cross over difficult paths, vāṇī the goddess of seven sounds, all kinds of oral sacred knowledge, treatises, songs and rules, explanations of all treatises - all were serving brahma in body form. kṣaṇā lavā muhūrtāścha divā rātriścha bhārata | ardhamāsāścha māsāścha ṛtavaḥ ṣaṭtathaiva ca | kṣaṇa (a division of time), lava (1/60 of twinkling), muhūrta (48 minutes), day and night, O the one of bharata race (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued), half-month, month, and all the six seasons, saṁvatsarāścaturyugaṁ māsā rātriścaturvidhā ||3-66-41 the year, the four eras, month and the four kinds of night, kālacakraṁ ca yaddivyamanityaṁ dhruvamavyayam | ete cānye ca bahavaḥ svayambhuvamupasthitāḥ ||3-66-42 the divine, fixed, great wheel of time, not eternal (anityaṁ) yet having no decline and many others were serving the self born. te praviṣṭāḥ sabhāṁ divyāṁ brahmaṇaḥ sarvakāmadām | kaśyapastridaśaiḥ sārdhaṁ putrairdharmaviśāradaiḥ ||3-66-43 kashyapa, the expert of dharma, along with his sons, the deva-s, entered the divine assembly of brahma, capable of giving all desires. sarvatejomayīṁ divyāṁ brahmarṣigaṇasevitām | The divine assembly, having all kinds of splendor, was served by the brahma sages. brāhmyā śriyā dīpyamānamacintyaṁ vigataklamam ||3-66-44 brahmāṇaṁ vīkṣya te sarve āsīnaṁ paramāsane | All of them saw the blazing brahma, who can not be conceived, who was not having any fatigue, seated in the assembly with prosperity. jagmurmūrdhnā śubhau pādau brahmaṇaste divaukasaḥ ||3-66-45 All the deva-s bowed to the auspicious feet of brahma by touching them with their heads. śirobhiḥ spṛśya charaṇau tasya te parameṣṭhinaḥ | vimuktāḥ sarvapāpebhyaḥ śāntā vigatakalmaṣāḥ ||3-66-46 By touching the feet of the supreme lord with their heads all the deva-s became released from all sins. They became calm with all their sins removed. dṛṣṭvā tu tānsurānsarvānkaśyapena sahāgatān | ahā brahmā mahātejā devānāṁ prabhurīśvaraḥ ||3-66-47 The lord, the highly splendorous lord of deva-s, seeing all the deva-s who arrived along with kashyapa, spoke. iti śrīmahābhārate khileṣu harivaṁśe bhaviṣyaparvaṇi vāmanaprādurbhāve brahmalokagamane ṣaṭṣaṣṭitamo'dhyāyaḥ This is the sixty-sixth chapter of bhaviṣyaparva, harivaṁśa, khila of mahābharata , in the manifestation of vāmana , Kashyapa and āditi go to Brahma nīlakaṇṭha commentary · 3-66-12 yaḥ iti | uttama iti caturmukha uktaḥ | tasya ātmā vai putranāmāsi iti śrutyāvagataḥ putre marīchau ātmābhāvaḥ evaṁ paraṁparayā pautre'pi sādhāraṇyenātmabhāvaprāptāvāha ātmabhāvaviśeṣeṇeti | putrāpekṣayāpautre ātmabhāvo viśeṣato'sti | ata eva prahlādaguṇāḥ vaiṣṇavatvādayaḥ | pautre balā kātsnyairnābhivyaktā na tu putre virochane | ata eva dakṣiṇātyāḥ pautraṁ pitāmahanāmnā yojayanti | · 3-66-30 lokāyatikamukhyaḥ | śāstravidbhiḥ saha devāḥ śuśruvuriti saṁbandhaḥ | na ca lokāyatānāṁ dehātmavādināṁ vedadrohiṇāṁ brahmaloke gatiḥ sambhavatīti śaṁkanīyam | atra lokāyata śabdasya tachcāstrābhimānidevatāparatvāt | tatra mūrtimatāṁ vedānāṁ sāmagānāṁ śāstrāṇāṁ ca sarveṣāṁ sadbhāvasya kathanādi tyuhyam || iti śrīmahabharate khileṣu harivaṁśe bhaviṣyaparvaṇi ṭīkāyāṁ ṣaṭṣaṣṭitamo'dhyāyaḥ
