Parva 3 Chapter 67: kaśyapādīnprati brahmavākyaṁ kṣirodasyottare tīre kaśyapādergamanaṁ tapaścaryā ca - kashyapa and others commence penance, on brahma's advice

brahmovāca yadarthamiha saṁprāptā bhavantaḥ sarva eva hi | vijānāmyahamavyagra etatsarvaṁ mahābalāḥ ||3-67-1

Translation

brahma said: O the powerful ones! I, who pay attention to all details, know all the reasons for which all of you have come here. bhaviṣyati ca vaḥ so'rthaḥ kāṅkṣito yaḥ surottamāḥ | balerdānavamukhyasya yo vijetā bhaviṣyati ||3-67-2 O the best among deva-s! All that you desire will happen so. The one who will conquer the chief of the sons of danu, bali, na khalvasurasaṅghānāmeko jetā sa viśvakṛt | trailokyasyāpi jetāsau devānāmapi chottamaḥ ||3-67-3 He is the only one creator of the world, who can conquer the groups of demons. He will conquer the three worlds. He will be the best among the devas. dhātā caiva hi lokānāṁ viśvayoniḥ sanātanaḥ | pūrvadehaṁ sadā prāhurhemagarbhanidarśanam ||3-67-4 He is the creator of the world. The eternal one is the source of the world. He, the one who is in the golden womb, is the foremost one, from whose body I was born. ātmā devena vibhunā kṛto'jeyo mahātmanaḥ | The great soul, the Lord, has made the supreme soul, not to be conquered by any one. balerasuramukhyasya viśvasya jagatastathā ||3-67-5 prabhavaḥ sa hi sarveṣāmasmākamapi pūrvajaḥ | He is the source of all - bali, the chief of demons, the world and the universe. He, the one who was born before is the source of all of us as well. acintyaḥ sa hi viśvātmā yogayuktaḥ paraṁtapaḥ ||3-67-6 He, the soul of the universe, can not be thought of. He is yoked with yoga, the one who destroys enemies. taṁ devāpi mahātmānaṁ na viduḥ ko'pyasāviti | vedātmānaṁ ca viśvaṁ ca sadevaḥ puruṣottamaḥ ||3-67-7 Even the deva-s do not know who the great soul is. The best among men, is the soul of vedas, the world and the soul of devas. tasyaiva tu prasādena pravakṣye'haṁ parāṁ gatim | yatra yogaṁ samāsthāya tapashcharati dushcharam ||3-67-8 With his pleasure, I shall speak about the ultimate refuge, where, taking up yoga, he performs highly difficult penance. kṣīrodasyottare kūle udīchyāṁ dishi devatāḥ | amṛtaṁ nāma paramaṁ sthānamāhurmanīṣiṇaḥ | bhavantastatra vai gatvā tapasā saṁśitavratāḥ ||3-67-9 O deva-s! On the northern bank of the milk ocean, in the north direction, those with intellect, speak about a superior place called amṛtaṁ. All of you, who observe vows with penances, shall go there. amṛtaṁ sthānamāsādya tapashcharata dushcharam | Arriving at the place called amṛtaṁ, perform highly difficult penance. tatra śroṣyatha vispaṣṭāṁ snigdhagambhīraniḥsvanām ||3-67-10 uṣṇage toyapūrṇasya toyadasya samasvanām | There you shall hear a clear, friendly and deep sound, equal to the thunder of water bearing cloud full of water, in the rainy season. yuktākṣarapadasnigdhāṁ ramyāmabhayadāṁ śivām ||3-67-11 vāṇīṁ paramasaṁskārāṁ varadāṁ brahmavādinīm | That speech will be with appropriate letters and words, friendly, beautiful, providing refuge, auspicious, highly cultivated, boon-giving, along with brahma words. divyāṁ sarasvatīṁ satyāṁ sarvakilbiṣanaśiṇīm ||3-67-12 sarvadevādhidevasya bhāṣitāṁ bhāvitātmanaḥ | Those words of sarasvatī will be divine, truthful and destroying all sins, spoken by the Lord of all deva-s, who is having the supreme soul. tasya vratasamāptau tu yāvadvratavisarjanam ||3-67-13 amoghasya tu devasya viśvedevā mahātmanaḥ | Those words will be spoken by the Lord having no sins, the lord of the world, the great soul, at the end of the vow, as the vows conclude. svāgataṁ vaḥ suraśreṣṭhā matsakāśe vyavasthitāḥ ||3-67-14 kasya kiṁ vā varaṁ devā dadāmi varadaḥ sthitaḥ | O the best among deva-s! O those who have come near me! I welcome you. What boon shall I, who is capable of giving boons, shall give you and to whom? taṁ kaśyapo'ditiścaiva varaṁ gṛhṇīta vai tataḥ ||3-67-15 praṇamya śirasā pādau tasmai yogātmane tadā | (vaiśaṁpāyana said) Saying that let us ask for boons, kashyapa and aditi, bowed with their heads touching the feet of the one whose soul is yoked with yoga. bhavāneva ca naḥ putro bhavatviti na saṁśayaḥ ||3-67-16 uktashcha parayā bhaktyā tathāstviti sa vakṣyati | (brahma said) If you ask him that you shall become our son, without any doubt, and with high devotion, he will say, let it be. devā bruvantu taṁ sarve bhrātā nastvaṁ bhaveti ha ||3-67-17 Let all deva-s ask him to become their brother. tathāstviti ca sa śrīmānvakṣyate sarvalokakṛt ||3-67-18 The auspicious lord, the creator of all the worlds will say, let it be. tasmādevaṁ gṛhītvā tu varaṁ tridaśasattamāḥ | kṛtakṛtyāḥ punaḥ sarve gacchadhvaṁ svaṁ svamālayam ||3-67-19 O the best among deva-s! Getting a boon like this from him, with a feeling of having done what is to be done, all shall return to their own abodes. tathāstviti surāḥ sarve kaśyapo'ditireva ca | vanditvā brahmacharaṇau gatāḥ saumyāṁ diśaṁ prati ||3-67-20 Saying that let it be, all the deva-s, kashyapa, as well as aditi bowed to the feet of brahma and proceeded to the gentle, northern direction. te'chireṇaiva saṁprāptāḥ kṣirodasyottaraṁ taṭam | yathoddiṣṭaṁ bhagavatā brahmaṇā brahmavādinā ||3-67-21 Without much delay, they reached the northern bank of the milk ocean, as spoken by the lord brahma, fixed in the principle of brahma. te'tītya sāgarānsarvānparvatāṁścha bahūnkṣaṇāt | nadyashcha vividhā divyāḥ pṛthivyāṁ surasattamāḥ ||3-67-22 They, the best among deva-s, crossed all the oceans, many mountains and varieties of divine rivers of the earth, within a short time. pashyanti ca sughorāṁ vai sarvasattvavivarjitām | abhāskarāmamaryādāṁ tamasā saṁvṛtāṁ disham | Then they saw a highly terrible place, devoid of all beings, devoid of sun, having no limits and fully covered by darkness. amṛtaṁ sthānamāsādya kashyapena suraiḥ saha ||3-67-23 dīkṣitāḥ kāmadaṁ divyaṁ vrataṁ varṣasahasrakam | Reaching the place of amṛtaṁ, kashyapa, along with deva-s observed a divine, desire-yielding vow for one thousand years, prasādārthaṁ sureśāya tasmai yogāya dhīmate | nārāyaṇāya devāya sahasrākṣāya dhīmate ||3-67-24 to please the lord of deva-s, the one yoked with yoga, the one with intellect, the lord nārāyaṇa, the one with thousand eyes, the one having high intellect. brahmacharyeṇa maunena sthānavīrāsanena ca | damena ca surāḥ sarve tapo duścharamāsthitāḥ ||3-67-25 All the deva-s observed the highly difficult penance with celibacy, silence, adopting the vīrāsana position, and self control, standing on an elevated spot. kashyapastatra bhagavānprasādārthaṁ mahatmanaḥ | udīrayati vedoktaṁ yamāhuḥ paramaṁ stavam ||3-67-26 There, lord kashyapa recited the highest hymn as stated in veda to please the great soul. iti śrīmahābhārate khileṣu harivaṁśe bhaviṣyaparvaṇi vāmanaprādurbhāve saptaṣaṣṭitamo'dhyāyaḥ This is the sixty-seventh chapter of bhaviṣyaparva, harivaṁśa, khila of mahābhārata, in the manifestation of vāmana, kashyapa and others commence penance, on brahma's advice nīlakaṇṭha commentary · 3-67-1 yadarthamiti || · 3-67-4 hemagarbhanidarśanaṁ hiraṇyagarbho nidarśanaṁ pratimā putro yasya sa tathā taṁ mama pitaramityarthaḥ | vayamityanvayaḥ || · 3-67-5 viśvasyājeyamityarthaḥ || · 3-67-11 uṣṇage uṣṇo grīṣmaḥ gato nīto yatra tasminnuṣṇage || · 3-67-14 amoghaḥ ravo yasya | mukheti pāṭhe'pi rava eva lakṣyaḥ || · 3-67-24 sureśāya sureshasya || iti śrīmahābhārate khileṣu harivaṁśe bhaviṣyaparvaṇi ṭīkāyāṁ saptaṣaṣṭitamo'dhyāyaḥ || Missing śloka numbers in CS edition added following Gangavisnhu edition (-ah)
