namo'stu devadevesha ekaśṛṅga varāha vṛṣārchiṣa
Translation
kashyapa said:
O the lord of deva-s! I bow to you. O the one who manifested with one horn (as the great fish ) and boar! You sparkle with the rays of dharma.
vṛṣasindho vṛṣākape suravṛṣabha suranirmita
You are the ocean of dharma, the one who showers virtuousness (1), the best among deva-s and the creator of devas.
anirmita bhadrakapila dhruva dharma dharmarāja vaikuṇṭha
You are not created (by some one else). You are the auspicious kapila, the stable one (2), righteousness (dharma) (3), king of dharma. You are the one who prevents people from going astray or who at the beginning of creation put together different elements of nature (4).
tretāvarta anādimadhyanidhana dhanaṁjaya śuchiśravaḥ
You are the whirlpool of the three types of fire. You do not have the beginning, middle or the end. You are the god of fire (5) and you are the one having pure names (6).
agnija vṛṣṇija aja ajayāmṛteśaya sanātana vidhātastrikāma
You are born from fire (kārtikeya, see nīlakaṇṭha commentary), and you are born in the race of vṛṣṇi (kṛṣṇa). You have no birth (7). You can not be defeated. You lie down in water. You are eternal. You are the one who is dispenser of all fruits of actions or the great supporter (8), the one desired by all the three worlds.
tridhāma trikakut kakudmin dundubhe mahānābha lokanābha
You are the refuge of the three worlds, you have the three shoulders of dharma, knowledge and vairāgya (9). You are viṣṇu, You have the form of a large kettle drum announcing victory, You have a great navel, the world was created from the lotus of your navel.
padmanābha viriṣche variṣṭha bahurūpa virūpa
You have a lotus on your navel (10). You are brahma. You are the best of all. You have many forms and you have no form.
viśvarūpākṣayākṣara
You have a universal form. You have no decay. You are imperishable (11).
satyākṣara haṁsākṣara havyabhuk khaṇḍaparaśo śukra
You have the form of true letters, the form of veda. You are of the form of mantra, ajapa (see nīlakaṇṭha commentary). You are the fire consuming oblations. You slay your enemies with axe (12). You are śukra, the powerful and valiant.
muṣjakeśa haṁsa mahadakṣara hṛṣīkeśa sūkṣma
Your hair is like the species of rustling grass, muṣja (Saccarum Sara). You are the universal soul (hamsa), the great imperishable and the lord of senses (13). You are subtle and minute (14).
parasūkṣma turāṣāṭ viśvamūrte surāgraja nīla nistamo
You are the most minute. You are indra. The universe is your body form (15). You are the eldest of the devas. Your colour is blue. You are devoid of any dark quality.
virajastamorajaḥsattvadhāma sarvalokapratiṣṭha
You are devoid of rajas (rajoguṇa or dust). You are the abode of all the three qualities, tamas (darkness), rajas and sattva (goodness). You are established in all worlds.
śipiviṣṭa sutapastapogra agra agrajā dharmanābha gabhastinābha
You are in the form of rays of light or in sacrificial animals (16). You perform good penances (17) and terrible penances. You are the foremost, you are the first, your navel is dharma. Your navel is the centre of planetary system (sun).

dharmanema satyadhāma satyākṣara gabhastineme vipāpman
You are the one who operates the wheel of dharma, you reside in truth (vaikuṇṭha). You are the form of veda. You are the centre of planetary system (18). You are devoid of any sin.
candraratha tvameva samudravāsāḥ ajaikapāt sahasraśīrṣa
You are mounted on the chariot of moon (the minds of all beings). You are the one with ocean as your dress. You are ajaikapāt, one of the eleven rudras. You have one thousand (innumerable) heads (19).
sahasrasaṁmita mahāśīrṣa sahasradṛk sahasrapāt
You are present in innumerable (thousands), you have a great head, you have innumerable (thousand) eyes (20) and innumerable (thousand) feet (21).
adhomukha mahāmukha mahāpuruṣa puruṣottama sahasrabāho
You have faces looking down and you have great faces. You are the great puruṣa. You are the best among puruṣa-s (22) and you have innumerable (one thousand ) arms.
sahasramūrte sahasrāsya sahasrākṣa sahasrabhuja
You have innumerable (one thousand) bodies, innumerable (thousand) faces, innumerable (thousand) eyes (20) and innumerable (thousand) arms.
sahasrabhuva sahasraśastvāmāhurvedāḥ || 3-68-1
You have innumerable (thousand) forms. Veda-s describe you in innumerable (thousand) ways.
vishvedeva viśvasaṁbhava sarveṣāmeva devānāṁ saubhaga
You are the lord of the world. You are the creator of the world. You are the good fortune of all devas.
ādau gatiḥ viśvaṁ tvamāpyāyanaḥ viśvaṁ tvāmāhuḥ puṣpahāsa
You are the prime refuge of the world (23). You are the form of dharma (see nīlakaṇṭha commentary). You flourish the world and makes it happy. Your smile brightens the world like flowers.
paramavaradastvameva vauṣaṭ oṁkāra vaṣaṭkāraṁ
You are the lord who provides most of the boons. You are the oblation offered to the ancestors with fire (vauṣaṭ). You are the sacred syllable, oṁ. You are the one to whom oblations are offered (vaṣaṭkāra) (24).
tvamekamāhuragryaṁ makhabhāgaprāśinam || 3-68-2
Only you are considered as the best among the partakers of sacrificial oblations.
śatadhāra sahasradhāra bhūrda bhuvarda svarda bhūrbhuvaḥsvarda
You are soma, the moon (see nīlakaṇṭha commentary and 31). You provide the worlds of earth, the atmosphere and the heaven.
tvameva bhūtaṁ bhuvanaṁ tvaṁ svadhā tvameva brahmeshaya
You provide the three worlds. You are the beings and you are the world. You are the heaven and earth. Only you lie in brahma.
brahmamaya brahmādistvameva || 3-68-3
You are of brahma. Only you are the brahma and others.
dyaurasi pṛthivyasi pūṣāsi mātariśvāsi dharmo'si maghavāsi
You are the sky. You are the earth. You are the sun. You are the lord of wind. You are righteousness, dharma (3) and you are indra.
hotā potā netā hantā mantā homyahotā parātparastvaṁ
homyahotā tvameva ||3-68- 4
You only are the sacrificial priests and their companions (hota, pota, neta, hanta, manta, homyahota). You are the most superior lord and the sacrificial offering.
āpo'si viśvavāk dhātrā parameṇa dhāmnā tvameva digbhyaḥ sṛk
You are water. You are the speech of the entire world. For the best of the sacrifices, for satisfying the fire god, the foremost brahma had gathered the inarticulable sound (sṛk) from all directions. That is your form.
sṛgbhāṇḍa tvaṁ
You are all the materials required for the sacrifice.
gaṇa iṣṭo'si ijyo'si īḍyo'si tvaṣṭā
You are the community of priests for conducting sacrifices. You are the one who is worshipped by offering sacrifices. You are the one who is praised by hymns. You are tvaṣṭā (viśvakarmā).
tvamasi samiddhastvameva gatirgatimatāmasi mokṣo'si
You are the blazing fire. You are the refuge (of all beings). You are the ultimate refuge. You are the liberation (of all beings).
yogo'si guhyo'si siddho'si dhanyo'si dhātāsi paramo'si
You are the one who is realized through yoga (25). You are the mysterious (26). You are the one who obtained all or the omnipotent (27). You are the one who achieved everything (28). You are the supporter of all (29). You are the superior lord.
yajṣo'si somo'si yūpo'si dakṣiṇāsi dīkṣāsi viśvamasi ||3-68-5
You are the sacrifice (30). You are soma, the moon (31). You are the sacrificial post. You are the skillful (or the one who goes everywhere or the one who destroys the wicked (32). You are the preparation on consecration of rituals and you are the world.
sthaviṣṭha sthavira viśva turāṣāṭ hiraṇyagarbha hiraṇyanābha
You are the biggest (33). You are the ancient (34). You are the universe (35). You are indra. You are brahma, the one who is in the golden egg (womb of the world) (36). You are with auspicious navel (37).
hiraṇyanārāyaṇa nārāyaṇāntara nṛṇāmayana ādityavarṇa
You are the golden nārāyaṇa. You are the internal nārāyaṇa, the refuge of men. You have the colour of sun.
ādityatejaḥ mahāpuruṣa surottama Adideva padmanābha
You have the splendor of sun. You are the great puruṣa. You are the best among devas. You are the foremost of devas. You have a lotus in your navel (10).
padmeshaya padmākṣa padmagarbha hiraṇyāgrakeśa
You lie down on lotus. Your eyes are as beautiful as the lotus. You are meditated upon in the lotus of the heart (38). Your hair is golden.
śuklaviśvadeva viśvate mukha viśvākṣa viśvasaṁbhava
You are sparkling white. You have the form of the all devas. The world is your face. The world is your eye. The world is born from you.
viśvabhuktvameva || 3-68-6
You are the one who enjoys or rules the world (39).
bhūrivikrama cakrakrama tribhuvana suvikrama svavikrama
You are highly valiant. You make the wheel move. All the three worlds are your form. Your valiance is auspicious. You are with valiance.
svarvikrama babhruḥ suvibhuḥ prabhākaraḥ śaṁbhuḥ svayaṁbhūścha
You are with valiance. You support the world (40). You are the auspicious lord. You are the form of splendor. You are auspicious to your devotees (41). You are the self manifest (42).
bhūtādiḥ bhūtātman mahābhūta viśvabhuktvameva viśvagoptāsi
You are the cause of all (43). You are the soul of all creation (44). You are the great being who transcends time (45). You are the one who enjoys or rules the world (39). You are the protector of the world.
viśvaṁbhara pavitramasi havirviśārada haviḥkarmā amṛtendhana
You are the ruler of the world. You are the purifier (46). You are the expert of sacrifices with oblations. You are interested in sacrifices with oblations. You are the fire flourishing with the fuel of amṛta.
surāsuraguro mahādideva nṛdeva Urdhvakarman pūtātman
You are the perceptor of deva-s and asuras. You are the great deva. You are the deva of men. Devotion to you ensures the progress of soul. You are the pure soul (47).
amṛteśa divaḥspṛk viśvasya pate ghṛtācyasi
You are the lord of amṛta. You are the one who touches the sky (48). You are the lord of the world. You are the sacrificial ladle filled with ghee (49).
anantakarman druhyanavaṁśa svavaṁśa viśvapāstvaṁ tvameva
Your actions have no end. brahma is from your race (see gitā press commentary). You are self born. You protect the world.
viśvaṁ bibharṣi varārthino nastrāyasveti || 3-68-7
You flourish the world. Please protect us who seek boon from you.

5: yaddigvijaye prabhūtam dhanamajayavattena dhanaṣjayaḥ arjunaḥ,
pāṇḍavānāṁ dhanaṣjayaḥ
iti bhagavadvacanāt (bhagavad gītā, 10.37) arjuna who won great wealth (1).
6: shuchini śravāṁsi nāmāni śravaṇīyānyasyeti śuchiśravā He who has pure names (1).
7: na jāyata iti ajaḥ
na jāto na janiṣyate iti śruteḥ
na hi jāto najāyeyaṁ na janiṣye kadācanaḥ
kṣetrajṣaḥ sarvabhūtānāṁ tasmādahamajaḥ smṛtaḥ

iti śruteḥ (puruṣasūktam)- He who has innumerable feet (1).
22: puruṣāṇāṁ uttamaḥ puruṣottamaḥ
yasmāt kṣaramatīto'hamakṣarādapi chottamaḥ |
ato'smi loke vede ca prathitaḥ puruṣottamaḥ
(bhagavd gītā 15.18). The supreme person (1).
23: compare with muktānāṁ paramāgatiḥ muktānāṁ paramā prakṛṣṭā gatirgantavyā devatā punarāvṛttyasaṁbhavāttadgatisyeti muktānāṁ paramāgatiḥ
māmupetya tu kaunteyaḥ punarjanma na vidyate
(bhagavad gītā 8.16). The highest goal of the liberated souls or supreme god (1).
24: yaduddeśenāddhvare vaṣaṭkriyate saḥ vaṣaṭkāraḥ yasmin ya~jne vā vaṣaṭkriyā
ya~jno vai viṣnuḥ
iti śruteḥ (taittarīya saṁhitā 1.7.4)- He to whom oblations are offered.
25: jṣānedriyāṇi sarvaṇi nigṛhya manasā saha ekatvabhāvanā yogaḥ kṣetrajṣa paramātmanoḥ tadavāpyataya yogaḥ - He who is realized through yoga (1).
26: rahasyopaniṣadvedyatvādguhāyāṁ hṛdayākāśe nihita iti vā guhyaḥ. The mysterious or profound (1).
27: nityaniṣpannarūpatvat siddhaḥ. He who obtained all. ananyādīnasiddhatvāt siddhaḥ. The omnipotent (1).
28: kṛtārtho dhanyaḥ - He who achieved everything (1).
29: anantādirūpeṇa viśvaṁ bibhartīti dhātā. The supporter of all (1).
30: sarvaya~jnasvarūpatvat ya~jnaḥ sarveṣāṁ devanāṁ tuṣṭikārako ya~jnākāreṇa pravartata iti vā,
ya~jno vai viṣṇuḥ
iti śruteḥ (taittarīya samhita 2.5.5). He who is of the form of sacrifice. (1).
31: somarūpeṇauṣadhīḥ poṣayan somaḥ umayā sahita shivo vā He who in the form of moon nourishes the plant kingdom or who is with uma (shiva).
32: dakṣiṇaśabdasyāpi dakṣa evārthaḥ dakṣate gacchati hinastīti vā dakṣiṇaḥ dakṣaḥ gatihiṁsanayoḥ iti dhātupāṭhāt - He who is skillful or goes everywhere or destroys the wicked (1).
33: atishayena sthūlaḥ sthaviṣṭhaḥ - The biggest. vairājarūpeṇa sthitaḥ sthaviṣṭhaḥ
agnirmūrdho cakṣuṣī candrasūryo
iti śruteḥ - The huge (1).
34: purāṇaḥ sthaviraḥ vayo vacano vā. The ancient (1).
35: viśvasya jagataḥ kāraṇatvena viśvaṁ iti ucyate brahmaḥ puruṣa evedaṁ viśvam iti śruteḥ (muṇḍaka upaniṣad 2.1.10) (1).
36: hiraṇmayāṇḍāntarvartitvāt hiraṇyagarbho brahmā viriṣchaḥ tadatmā hiraṇyagarbha samavartatāgre iti śruteḥ ( ṛgveda 10.121.1)- he who is in the golden egg (1). hiraṇyagarbhaḥ sambhūtikāraṇaṁ hiraṇmayamaṇḍaṁ yadvīryasambhūtaṁ tadasya garbha iti hiraṇyagarbha. The source of the golden egg from which the creation emanated (1).
37: hiraṇmayamiva kalyāṇī nābhirasyeti hiraṇyanābha hitaramaṇīyanābhitvādvā. He who has auspicious navel (1).
38: padmasya hṛdayākhyasya madhye upāsyatvāt padmagrabhaḥ. He who is meditated upon in the lotus of the heart (1).
39: viśvam bhuṅkte bhunakti pālayatīti vā viśvabhuk - He who enjoys or rules all (1).
40: bibharti lokāniti babhruḥ - He who supports the world (1).
41: śaṁ sukhaṁ bhaktānāṁ bhāvayatīti śaṁbhuḥ - He who is auspicious to his devotees (1).
42: svayameva bhavatīti svayaṁbhūḥ
prakṛtīṁ svamadhiṣṭāya sambhavāmyātmamāyayā
