vaiśampāyana uvāca prajānāṁ patayaḥ sapta sapta caiva maharṣayaḥ | tasya devasya jātasya namaskāraṁ pracakrire||3-70-1

Translation

vaiśampāyana said: All the seven lords of beings (marīchi, atri, aṅgiras, pulastya, pulaha, kratu, vasiṣṭha - see nīlakaṇtha commentary) and all the seven sages paid obeisance to the Lord who was born. bhāradhvājaḥ kashyapo gautamashcha viśvāmitro jamadagnirvasiṣṭhaḥ | yashchodito bhāskare saṁpranaṣṭe so'pyatrātrirbhagavānājagāma ||3-70-2 bharadhvāja, kashyapa, gautama, viśvāmitra, jamadagni, vasiṣṭha and lord atri, who rose when the sun set, arrived there. marīciraṅgirāścaiva pulastyaḥ pulahaḥ kratuḥ | dakṣaprajāpatiścaiva namaskāraṁ pracakrire ||3-70-3 marīchi, aṅgiras, and also pulastya, pulaha, kratu as well as dakṣa, the lord of beings paid obeisance to the lord. aurvo vasiṣṭhaputraścha stambaḥ kāśyapa eva ca | kapīvānkapīvāṁścha datto niścyavanastathā ||3-70-4 aurva, the son of vasiṣṭha, stamba, kāśyapa, kapivān, akapivān, and nishcyavana, vasiṣṭhaputrāḥ saptāsanvāsiṣṭhā iti viśrutāḥ | hiraṇyagarbhasya sutāḥ pūrvajātāḥ sutejasaḥ ||3-70-5 and vasiṣṭhaputra-s - the famous seven sons of vasiṣṭha, the splendorous sons of hiraṇyagarbha who were born earlier, came and paid obeisance to the lord. gārgyaḥ pṛthustathaivānyo janyo vāmana eva ca | devabāhuryadudhraścha parjanyashcaiva somajaḥ ||3-70-6 gārgya, pṛthu, janya, vāmana, devabāhu, yadudhra, and also soma's son, parjanya, hiraṇyaromā vedaśirāḥ saptanetrastathaiva ca | viśvo'tiviśvaścyavanaḥ sudhāmā virajāstathā ||3-70-7 atināmā sahiṣṇuścha namaskāramakurvata | hiraṇyaroma, vedashira, saptanetra and also viśva, ativiśva, cyavana, sudhāma, viraja, atināma and sahiṣṇu paid obeisance to the lord. uddyotamānā vapuṣā sarvābharaṇabhūṣitāḥ ||3-70-8 upanṛtyanti deveṣaṁ viṣṇumapsarasāṁ varāḥ | The divine women, with their sparkling body decorated with all kinds of ornaments danced in front of the lord of deva-s, viṣṇu. tato gandharvatūryeṣu praṇadatsu vihāyasi ||3-7-9 bahubhiḥ saha gandharvaiḥ prāgāyata ca tumburuḥ | Then as the musical instruments of the gandharva-s were being played in the sky, tumburu sang with many other gandharvas. mahāśrutiścitraśirā ūrṇāyuranaghastathā ||3-70-10 gomāyuḥ sūryavarcāścha somavarcāścha saptamaḥ | mahāśruti, citrashira, ūrṇāyu, anagha, gomāyu, suryavarcha and somavarcha, the seventh, yugapastṛṇapaḥ kārṣṇirnandiścha triśirāstathā ||3-70-11 yugapa, tṛṇapa, kārṣṇi, nandi, triśirā, trayodaśaḥ śāliśirāḥ parjanyashcha caturdaśaḥ | kaliḥ paṣchadaśaścātra tatraiva tu mahīpate ||3-70-12 the thirteenth śāliśira, parjanya, the fourteenth and kali the fifteenth arrived there, O the lord of earth, (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) to pay obeisance to the lord. daśa paṣcha tvime proktā nāradaścaiva ṣoḍaśaḥ | hāhā hūhūścha gandharvau haṁsaścaiva mahādyutiḥ ||3-70-13 sarve te devagandharvā upagāyanti keshavam | All the above fifteen and nārada, the sixteenth, hāhā and also huhū, the gandharvas and haṁsa of great splendor - all the devagandharva-s sang before keshava (vāmana-viṣṇu). tathaivāpsaraso hṛṣṭāḥ sarvālaṅkārabhūṣitāḥ ||3-70-14 vapuṣmantaḥ sujaghanāḥ sarvāṅgaśubhadarśanāḥ | nanṛtuścha mahābhāgā jaguścāyatalochanāḥ ||3-70-15 In the same way, all the divine women, the women of great fortune, decorated by all kinds of ornaments, having beautiful body, hips and buttocks, whose limbs are auspicious to see, having beautiful long eyes, becoming happy, danced and sang. sumadhyāścārumadhyāścha priyamukhyo varānanāḥ | The divine women were having beautiful waists. Their faces were auspicious and beautiful. anūkātha tathā jāmī miśrakeśī tvalambuṣā ||3-70-16 marīchiḥ śūchikāścaiva vidyutpūrṇā tilottamā | adrikā lakṣaṇā caiva rambhā tadvanmanoramā ||3-70-17 asitā ca subāhuścha supriyā subhagā tathā | urvaśī citralekhā ca sugrīvā ca sulochanā ||3-70-18 puṇḍarīkā sugandhā ca surathā ca pramāthinī | nandā śāradvatī caiva tathānyāstatra saṁghaśaḥ ||3-70-19 menakā sahajanyā ca parṇikā puṣjikasthalā | etāścāpsaraso'nyāścha pranṛtyanti sahasraśaḥ ||3-70-20 The divine women anūkā, jāmī, miśrakeśī, alambuṣā, marīchi, śūchikā, vidyutpurṇā, tilottama, adrikā, lakṣaṇa as well as rambha and manorama, asitā, subāhu, supriya and also subhaga, urvaśī , citralekhā, sugrīvā, sulochanā, puṇḍarikā, sugandhā as also surathā, pramāthinī, nandaā, śāradvatī and other women as groups, such as menakā, sahajanyā, parṇikā, puṣjikasthala and other divine women in thousands danced there. dhātāryamā ca mishrashcha varuṇo'ṁśo bhagastathā | indro vivasvānpūṣā ca tvaṣṭā ca savitā tathā ||3-70-21 kathito viṣṇurityevaṁ kāśyapeyo gaṇastathā | dhātā, aryamā, mishra, varuṇa, aṁśa, bhaga, indra, vivasvān, pūṣa, tvaṣṭā, savitā as well as viṣṇu are the group of the sons of kashyapa. ityete dvādaśādityā jvalantaḥ sūryavarchasaḥ ||3-70-22 cakrustasya sureshasya namaskāraṁ mahātmanaḥ | These twelve āditya-s, blazing and splendorous like sun, arrived there and paid obeisance to the great soul, the lord of devas. mṛgavyādhaścha sarpashcha nirṛtiścha mahābalaḥ ||3-70-23 ajaikapādahirbudhnyaḥ pinākī cāparājitaḥ | dahano'theśvaraścaiva kapālī ca viśāṁpate ||3-70-24 sthāṇurbhagaścha bhagavānrudrāstatrāvatasthire | O the lord of earth! (O janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) mṛgavyādha, sarpa, highly powerful nirṛti, ajaikapāt, ahirbudhnya, pinākī and also aparājita, dahana, īśvara and also kapālī and sthāṇu, the lord rudra were present there. ashvinau vasavaścāṣṭau marutashcha mahābalāḥ ||3-70-25 viśvedevāścha sādhyāścha tasya prāṣjalayaḥ sthitāḥ | The twin ashvin-s, the eight vasu-s, the powerful group of marut=s and also viśvadeva-s and sādhya-s were there with folded hands. śeṣānujā mahābhāgā vāsukipramukhāstathā ||3-70-26 kacchapaścāpahartā ca takṣakaścha mahābalaḥ | adhṛṣṭāstejasā yuktā mahākrodhā mahābalāḥ ||3-70-27 ete nāgā mahātmānastasmai prāṣjalayaḥ sthitāḥ | The younger brothers of śeṣa, starting with the highly fortunate and prominent vāsuki, kacchapa, as well as apaharta, the highly powerful takṣaka - These undefeatable serpents, having splendor, highly angry serpents, the great souls were present there with folded hands. tārkṣyaścāriṣṭanemiścha garuḍaścha mahābalaḥ ||3-70-28 aruṇaścāruṇiścaiva vainateyā hyupasthitāḥ | tārkṣya, ariṣṭanemi and the powerful garuḍa, aruṇa, āruṇi, the son of vinata were present there. pitāmahaścha bhagavānsvayamāgamya lokakṛt | prāha caivaṁ guruḥ śrīmānsaha sarvairmahātmabhiḥ ||3-70-29 Then the lord, the great grandfather, the creator of the world arrived there. The auspicious preceptor accompanied by all great souls said as follows: brahmovāca yasmātprasūyate lokaḥ prabhaviṣṇuḥ sanātanaḥ | tasmāllokeśvaraḥ śrīmānviṣṇureva bhavatvayam ||3-70-30 brahma said: This world is created from the eternal lord, the splendorous viṣṇu. Hence the lord, the auspicious viṣṇu, shall become the lord of the world. evamuktvā tu bhagavānsārdhaṁ devarṣibhiḥ prabhuḥ | namaskṛtvā sureśāya jagāma tridivaṁ punaḥ ||3-70-31 (vaiśampāyana continued: O janamejaya!) Speaking thus, lord brahma along with the deva sages, paid obeisance to the lord of deva-s and again returned to heaven. sa tu jātaḥ sureśānaḥ kaśyapasyātmajaḥ prabhuḥ | navadurdinameghābho raktākṣo vāmanākṛtiḥ ||3-70-32 The lord, the lord of deva-s, who became the son of kashyapa, sparkled with the dark colour of the cloud of the rainy season. His eyes were red. He was short in stature. He had the form of vāmana, a dwarf. śrīvatsenorasi śrīmānromajātena rājatā | utphullalochanāḥ sarvāḥ paśyantyapsarasastadā ||3-70-33 He had a mark of śrīvatsa on his chest, shining with chest-hair. All the divine women looked at him with their eyes wide open. divi sūryasahasrasya bhavedyugapadutthitā | yadi bhāḥ sadṛśī sā syādbhāsā tasya mahātmanaḥ ||3-70-34 If thousands of suns rise in the sky at the same time, that brightness may not be equal to the splendor of that great soul. surarṣipratimaḥ śrīmānbhūrbhuvo bhūtabhāvanaḥ | śuchiromā mahāskandhaḥ sarvatejomayaḥ prabhuḥ ||3-70-35 The auspicious lord was like a deva-sage, concerned with the welfare of the earth, the sky and all the beings. He had clean hair and great shoulders. The lord was having all the splendor. yā gatiḥ puṇyakīrtīnāmagatiḥ pāpakarmaṇām | yogasiddhā mahātmāno yaṁ viduryogamuttamam ||3-70-36 He is the refuge of those having meritorious fame. Those who do sinful acts can not reach the lord. He is known as the best yoga by the great souls, the experts of yoga. yasyāṣṭaguṇamaiśvaryaṁ yamāhurdevasattamam | He is endowed with all the eight qualities of aishvarya. He is known as the best among devas. yaṁ prāpya śāśvataṁ viprā niyatāmokṣakāṅkṣiṇaḥ ||3-70-37 janmano maraṇāccaiva mucyante bhavabhīravaḥ | Reaching the eternal lord, those who are excited inwardly (brāhmins) and always desirous of liberation, are released from the fear of birth and death and worldly existence. yadetattapa ityāhuḥ sarvāśramanivāsinaḥ ||3-70-38 All those from all stages of life perform penance to achieve the lord. sevante yaṁ yatāhārā duścharaṁ vratamāsthitāḥ | yo'nanta iti nāgeṣu sevyate sarvabhogibhiḥ ||3-70-39 All those who perform difficult penances controlling food, reach the lord. All serpents such as ananta serve the lord. sahasramūrdhā raktākṣaḥ śeṣādibhiranuttamaiḥ | yo yajṣa iti viprendrairijyate svargalipsubhiḥ ||3-70-40 The lord has numerous heads (one thousand). His eyes are red. The incomparable serpents such as seṣa and the kings (indra) of those who are excited inwardly (brāhmins) and those desiring heaven, consider the lord as a sacrifice and worship the lord. nānāsthānagataḥ śrīmānekaḥ kaviranuttamaḥ | yaṁ vedā gānti vettāraṁ yajṣabhāgapradāyinam ||3-70-41 The lord is established at various places. The auspicious lord is the one and only one. The incomparable lord is wise. The veda-s praise the lord as the provider of oblations. vṛṣārchiścandrasūryākṣaṁ devamākāśavigraham | The lord sparkling with the rays of dharma has the moon and the sun as his eyes. The sky is the body of the lord. sa prāha tridaśānsarvānvācā vai parayā vibhuḥ ||3-70-42 jānannapi mahātejā gato yogena bālatām | The lord, even though having great splendor, had become a boy with yoga. The lord spoke to all the deva-s: kiṁ karomi suraśreṣṭhāḥ kaṁ varaṁ ca dadāmi vaḥ ||3-70-43 yatkāṅkṣitaṁ vai sarveṣāṁ tadvai brūta mudā yutāḥ | (vāmana said) O the best among deva-s! What shall I do? Which boon shall I give you? Please tell me with pleasure what is desired by all of you. tasya tadvacanaṁ śrutvā vāmanasya mahātmanaḥ ||3-70-44 sarve te hṛṣṭamanaso devāḥ kashyapanandanam | ūcuḥ prāṣjalayo viṣṇuṁ surāḥ śakrapurogamāḥ ||3-70-45 (vaiśampāyana continued: O janamejaya!) Hearing the words spoken by the great soul vāmana, all the deva-s became happy. The deva-s, keeping śakra (indra) in the front, told the son of kashyapa, viṣṇu with folded hands: brahmaṇo varadānena hṛtaṁ no nikhilaṁ jagat | tapasā mahatā caiva vikrameṇa damena ca ||3-70-46 balinā daityamukhyena sarvajṣena mahātmanā | bali, the great soul, the one who knows all, the prominent among the sons of diti, with his great penance, valiance and self-control as well as by the boon given by brahma , took away the entire world belonging to us. avadhyaḥ kila so'smākaṁ sarveṣāṁ devasattama ||3-70-47 bhavānprabhavate tasya nānyaḥ kashchana suvrata | O the best among deva-s! He can not be killed by all of us. O the one with good penance! There is no one else other than you, who can conquer him. yatprapadyāmahe sarve bhavantaṁ śaraṇārthinaḥ | śaraṇyaṁ varadaṁ devaṁ sarvadevabhayāpaham ||3-70-48 All of us seeking refuge, seek your refuge, who is the lord, the provider of boons, the one who destroys the fear of all devas. ṛṣīṇāṁ ca hitārthāya lokānāṁ ca sureshvara | priyārthaṁ ca tathādityāḥ kashyapasya tathaiva ca ||3-70-49 O the lord of deva-s! The liking of the sages and the people of the world and the liking of aditi and kashyapa shall happen. kavyaṁ pitṝṇāṁuchitaṁ surāṇāṁ havyamuttamam | pravarteta mahābaho yathāpūrvaṁ surottama ||3-70-50 Suitable offering shall be ensured to the ancestors and the best oblation to the deva-s, O the best among the deva-s! O the one with great arms! All should happen as before. ānṛṇyārthaṁ sureshasya vāsavasya mahātmanaḥ | pratyānaya mahendrasya trailokyamidamavyayam ||3-70-51 For releasing the great soul, the lord of deva-s, vāsava (indra) from debt, return all the imperishable three worlds to the great indra. kratunā vājimedhena yajate sa hi dānavaḥ | yatpratyānayane yuktaṁ lokānāṁ tadvicintaya ||3-70-52 The son of danu is performing a horse sacrifice now. Please think what is suitable to regain the three worlds. vaiśampāyana uvāca evamuktastadā devairviṣṇurvāmanarūpadhṛk | praharṣayannuvācātha sarvāndevānidaṁ vacaḥ ||3-70-53 vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) viṣṇu, in the form of vāmana, who was told thus by the deva-s, said, generating happiness for all the devas. viṣṇuruvāca tasya yajṣasakāśaṁ māṁ maharṣirvedapāragaḥ | bṛhaspatirmahātejā nayatvaṅgirasaḥ sutaḥ ||3-70-54 vāmana (viṣṇu) said: Let the great sage , the one who is expert of vedas, the son of aṅgiras, the highly splendorous bṛhaspati, take me to the place of the sacrifice. tasyāhaṁ samanuprāpto yajṣavāṭaṁ surottamāḥ | vichariṣye yathāyuktaṁ trailokyaharaṇāya vai ||3-70-55 O the best among deva-s! Reaching at the entrance of the place of sacrifice, I shall do the needful for taking away the three worlds. vaiśampāyana uvāca tato bṛhaspatirdhīmānanayadvāmanaṁ prabhuṁ | yajṣavāṭaṁ mahātejā dānavendrasya dhīmataḥ ||3-70-56 vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) Then the highly splendorous bṛhaspati with intellect, led lord vāmana to the entrance of the sacrifice of the indra (king) of danu's sons, bali, with intellect. mauṣjī yajṣopavītī ca cchatrī daṇḍī dhvajī tathā | vāmano dhūmraraktākṣo bhagavānbālarūpadhṛk ||3-70-57 Lord vāmana was in the form of a boy, with his hair like the species of rustling grass, muṣja (Saccarum Sara), invested with the sacred thread, holding an umbrella, staff and flag, with his eyes smoke-red in colour. taṁ gatvā yajṣavāṭaṁ ca brahmarṣigaṇasaṅkulam | ātmanā caiva bhagavānvarṇayāmāsa taṁ kratum ||3-70-58 Reaching the place of the sacrifice, full of brahma sages, lord vāmana himself described that sacrifice. lokeśvareśvaraḥ śrīmānsurairbrahmapurogamaiḥ | adhyāsyamāno bhagavānavṛddho'pyatha vṛddhavat ||3-70-59 The lord of the gods of the world, the auspicious lord, the lord worshipped by deva-s and brahma, the lord who does not become old, appeared aged. dānavādhipatestasya balervairochanasya ca | yajṣavāṭamacintyātmā jagāma surasattamaḥ ||3-70-60 vāmana, the best among deva-s, the soul who can not be thought of, went to the place of sacrifice of the king of the sons of danu, bali, the son of virochana. pālito'pi hi daiteyaḥ sāṅgrāmikaparicchadaiḥ | dvāre dānavasaṁbādhe sahasaiva vivesha ha ||3-70-61 Even though the entrance of the place of sacrifice was protected by the sons of diti, armed for battle, the lord vāmana directly went to the entrance. ṛṣibhiścaiva mantrādyaiḥ sarvataḥ parivāritam | daityadānavarājendramupatasthe baliṁ balī ||3-70-62 The powerful lord vāmana, saw the powerful bali, the indra (king) of the kings of the sons of diti and danu, surrounded by the sages as well as the priests, reciting mantras. varṇayitvā yathānyāyaṁ yajṣaṁ yajṣaḥ sanātanaḥ | vistareṇa naraśreṣṭha prayogairvividhaistathā ||3-70-63 O the best among men! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) The eternal lord, the lord of sacrifices, described the sacrifice in detail, systematically. He also explained the various rituals of the sacrifice. śukrādīnṛtvijaścāpi yajṣakarmavichakṣaṇān | sarvāneva nijagrāha cakāra ca niruttarān ||3-70-64 Lord vāmana defeated all the priests of the sacrifice such as śukra who are experts in the rituals of the sacrifice. He also made them devoid of answers. ārādatha balestasya ṛtvijāmabhitastathā | yajṣamātmānamevāsau hetubhiḥ kāraṇaṁ vibhuḥ ||3-70-65 By the side of bali, lord vāmana, surrounded by the sacrificial priests explained that the sacrifice is the soul, along with reasons. vaidikairaprakāśaiścha punarapyatha bhārata | pratyakṣamṛṣisaṅghānāṁ varṇayāmāsa citraguḥ ||3-70-66 O the one of bharata race! (janamejaya! vaishampayana continued) As the groups of sages were listening, the lord having beautiful speech, again explained the sacrifice with secret principles of vedas. tato niruttarāndṛṣṭvā sopādhyāyānṛṣīṁścha tān | avṛddhenāpi vṛddhāṁstānvāmanena mahaujasā ||3-70-67 Seeing that the highly splendorous vāmana, the boy, has made the aged and experienced sages and teachers, devoid of answers, adbhutaṁ cāpi mene sa virochanasuto balī | mūrdhnā kṛtāṣjaliśchedamabravīdvismito vacaḥ ||3-70-68 bali, son of virochana, considered it as a wonder. Astonished, he kept his folded hands over his head and spoke these words: kūṭastvaṁ ko'si kasyāsi kiṁ tehāsti prayojanam | naivaṁvidhaḥ parijṣāto dṛṣṭapūrvo mayā dvijaḥ ||3-70-69 (bali said) Where are you coming from? Who are you? Who are your parents? What do you want from here? I have neither known nor seen a twice-born like you before. bālo matimatāṁ śreṣṭho jṣānavijṣānakovidaḥ | śiṣṭavāgrūpasaṁpanno manojṣaḥ priyadarśanaḥ ||3-70-70 You are a boy. You are the best among those having intellect. You are an expert of spiritual and worldly knowledge. You speak best words. You are handsome. You are beautiful and dear to see. nedṛśāḥ santi devānāmṛṣīṇāmapi sūnavaḥ | na nāgānāṁ na yakṣāṇāṁ nāsurāṇāṁ na rakṣasāṁ ||3-70-71 There are no sons like you for deva-s, sages, serpents, yakṣa-s, asura-s or rākṣasas. na pitṝṇāṁ na siddhānāṁ gandharvāṇāṁ tathaiva ca | yo'si so'si namaste'stu brūhi kiṁ karavāṇi te ||3-70-72 There are no sons like you for ancestors, siddha-s and gandharva-s as well. Whoever you are, let it be. I bow to you. What shall I do for you? vaiśampāyyana uvāca ukta evaṁ hyacintyātmā balinā vāmanastadā | provācopāyatattvajṣaḥ smitapūrvamidaṁ vacaḥ ||3-70-73 vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!)
