viṣnu uvāca aho yajṣe'sureśasya bahubhakṣaḥ susaṁskṛtaḥ | pitāmahasyeva purā yajataḥ parameṣṭhinaḥ ||3-71-1

Translation

viṣṇu (vāmana said) said: Oh! The sacrifice of the lord of demons has many varieties of nicely cooked food. The sacrifice is similar to that observed by the great grand father, brahma, long ago. sureshasya ca śakrasya yamasya varuṇasya ca | viśeṣitastvayā yajṣo dānavendra mahābala ||3-71-2 O the highly powerful king of the sons of danu (bali)! Your sacrifices have excelled those conducted by the lord of deva-s, indra, yama, the god of death and varuṇa, the lord of water. yajatā vājimedhena kratūnāṁ pravareṇa tu | sarvapāpavināśāya tvayā svargapradarśinā ||3-71-3 You are the one who observed the horse sacrifice, the best of sacrifices, to destroy all sins. By performing this sacrifice, you have shown the path to heaven. sarvakāmamayo hyeṣa saṁmato brahmavādinām | kratūnāṁ pravaraḥ śrīmānaśvamedha iti śrutiḥ ||3-71-4 shruti states that the auspicious horse sacrifice, the best of sacrifices, approved by all followers of brahma, is capable of providing all desires. suvarṇaśṛṅgo hi mahānubhāvo lohakṣuro vāyujavo mahārathaḥ | svargekṣaṇaḥ kāṣchanagarbhagauraḥ sa viśvayoniḥ paramo hi medhyaḥ ||3-71-5 The peak (forehead) of the horse sacrifice is golden. Its splendor is great. It is hard and sharp as metal. It is fast like wind, like a great chariot. It views the heaven. Its splendor is bright like gold. The horse sacrifice, the cause of the world, is highly holy. āsthāya vai vājinamaśvamedha- miṣṭvā narā duṣkṛtamuttaranti | Ahushcha yaṁ vedavido dvijendrā vaiśvānaraṁ vājinamaśvamedham ||3-71-6 By observing the horse sacrifice, based on horse, people cross their bad deeds. The twice born, the experts of vedas say that the horse of the horse sacrifice is the god of fire (vaiśvānara). yathā''śramāṇāṁ pravaro gṛhāśramo yathā narāṇāṁ pravarā dvijātayaḥ | yathāsurāṇāṁ pravaro bhavāniha tathā kratūnāṁ pravaro'śvamedhaḥ ||3-71-7 As the state of house-holder is the best of the four stages of life, the twice born are the best among men and you are the best among the asura-s, in the same way, the horse sacrifice is the best among the sacrifices. vaiśampāyaba uvāca etacchrutvā tu vacanaṁ vāmanena samīritam | mudā paramayā yuktaḥ prāha daityapatirbaliḥ ||3-71-8 vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) Hearing these words spoken by vāmana, the lord of the sons of diti, bali became highly pleased and said: baliruvāca kasyāsi brāhmaṇaśreṣṭha kimicchasi dadāmi te | varaṁ varaya bhadraṁ te yatheṣṭaṁ kāmamāpnuhi ||3-71-9 bali said: O the best of brahmins! Whose son are you? What do you want? What shall I give you? Accept a boon from me. Let there be good to you. Obtain what you desire as you like. vāmana uvāca na rājyaṁ na ca yānāni na ratnāni na ca striyaḥ | kāmaye yadi tuṣṭo'si dharme ca yadi te matiḥ ||3-71-10 vāmana said: I do not want land, vehicles, jewels or women. If you are pleased and if your intellect is based on dharma, I will tell you what I desire. gurvarthaṁ me prayacchasva padāni trīṇi dānava | tvamagniśaraṇārthāya eṣa me pravaro varaḥ | O the son of danu (bali)! For the sake of building a fire hall for my preceptor, give me three feet (of earth). This is the best boon I desire. vāmanasya vacaḥ śrutvā prāha daityapatirbaliḥ ||3-71-11 Hearing the words of vāmana, the lord of the sons of diti (bali) said: baliruvāca tribhiḥ kiṁ tava viprendra padaiḥ pravadatāṁ vara | śataṁ śatasahasrāṇāṁ padānāṁ mārgatāṁ bhavān ||3-71-12 bali said: O the king (indra) of those who are excited inwardly! O the best among speakers! Why (only) three feet? You shall get hundreds and hundred thousands feet! śukra uvāca mā dadasva mahābāho na tvaṁ vetsi mahāsura | eṣa māyāpraticchanno bhagavān pravaro hariḥ ||3-71-13 śukra said: O the one with great arms! Do not give! You do not know, O the best among asura-s! He is the lord, the best (among deva-s), hari, covered by illusion! vāmanaṁ rūpamāsthāya śakrapriyahitepsayā | tvāṁ vaṣchayitumāyāto bahurūpadharo vibhuḥ ||3-71-14 Taking up the form of vāmana (dwarf), the lord, capable of taking many forms has come to deceive you, desiring the benefit of śakra (indra). evamuktaḥ sa śukreṇa ciraṁ saṣchintya vai baliḥ | praharṣeṇa samāyuktaḥ kimataḥ pātramiṣyate ||3-71-15 (vaiśampāyana continued: O janamejaya!) bali who was told thus by śukra thought for a long time. He became very happy thinking. is there a beneficiary, better than the lord? pragṛhya haste saṁbhrānto bhṛṅgāraṁ kanakodbhavam | Becoming highly excited, bali, took up the gold vessel in his hand. baliruvāca viprendra prāṣmukhastiṣṭha sthito'smi kamalekṣaṇa ||3-71-16 pratīccha dehi kiṁ bhūmiṁ kiṁ mātrā bhoḥ padatrayam | dattaṁ ca pātaya jalaṁ naiva mithyā bhavedguruḥ ||3-71-17 bali said: O the king of those who are excited inwardly! Stand facing the east! vāmana said) I have stood (facing the east) (bali said) O the one with eyes as beautiful as the lotus flower! Take! (vāmana said) give me! (bali said) What? (vāmana said) earth (bali said): How much? (vāmana said): Only three feet! (bali said): I have given. (vāmana said): Offer water so that my perceptor's desire is not wasted. śukra uvāca bho na deyaṁ kuto daitya vijṣāto'yaṁ mayā dhruvam | ko'yaṁ viṣṇuraho prītirvaṣchitastvaṁ na vaṣchitaḥ ||3-71-18 śukra said: O lord! Do not give! (bali said): Why not? (śukra said) O the son of diti! I definitely know who he (vāmana) is! (bali said) Who is he? (śukra said) Oh! He is viṣṇu! (bali said:) Then I am highly pleased (śukra said) You are deceived! (bali said): I am not deceived! baliruvāca kathaṁ sa nātho'yaṁ viṣṇuryajṣe svayamupasthitaḥ | dāsyāmi devadevāya yadyadicchatyayaṁ vibhuḥ ||3-71-19 bali said: If he is the lord viṣṇu himself, who has come to this sacrifice, then I shall give the lord, the Lord of lords, all that he wishes. ko vānyaḥ pātrabhūto'smādviṣṇoḥ parataro bhavet | evamuktvā baliḥ śīghraṁ pātayāmāsa vai jalam ||3-71-20 Who else can become a beneficiary, superior than lord viṣṇu? Saying this, bali poured the water quickly. vāmana uvāca padāni trīṇi daityendra paryāptāni mamānagha | yanmayā pūrvamuktaṁ hi tattathā na tadanyathā ||3-71-21 vāmana said: O the king of the sons of bali! Three feet of earth is sufficient for me, O the one without any sin! It will be the same as I said earlier. It can not be otherwise. vaiśampāyana uvāca ityetadvacanaṁ śrutvā vāmanasya mahaujasaḥ | kṛṣṇājinottarīyaṁ sa kṛtvā vairochanistadā ||3-71-22 vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) Hearing these words of vāmana of great splendor, the son of virochana, bali, put the skin of black antelope on his shoulder. evamastviti daityesho vākyamuktvārisūdanaḥ | tato vārisamāpūrṇaṁ bhṛṅgāraṁ sa parāmṛśat ||3-71-23 The lord of the sons of diti, the slayer of enemies, bali, said: Let it be. Then he kept his hand on the vessel filled with water. vāmano hyasurendrasya chikīrṣuḥ kadanaṁ mahat | kṣipraṁ prasārayāmāsa daityakṣayakaraṁ karam ||3-71-24 vāmana, desiring to bring great harm to the king of demons, quickly extended his hand, capable of causing the decline of the sons of diti. prāṣmukhaścāpi daityeshastasmai sumanasā jalam | dātukāmaḥ kare yāvattāvattaṁ pratyaṣedhayat ||3-71-25 tasya tadrūpamālokya hyacintyaṁ ca mahātmanaḥ | abhūtapūrvaṁ ca harerjihīrṣoḥ śriyamāsurīm ||3-71-26 iṅgitajṣo'grataḥ sthitvā prahrādastvabravīdvacaḥ | As the lord of the sons of diti, having a pleased mind, was about to pour water on the extended hand of vāmana, who stood facing east, seeing that form of the great soul which can not be thought of, thinking that this form of hari who takes away the progress and welfare of demons has not existed before, prahrāda, the foremost of those who recognize the actions of viṣṇu, stood in front of bali and said: prahrāda uvāca mā dadasva jalaṁ haste vaṭorvāmanarūpiṇaḥ ||3-71-27 sa tvasau yena te pūrvaṁ nihataḥ prapitāmahaḥ | prahrāda said: Do not pour water on the hands of the young Brahmin, in the form of vāmana. He is the same one (narasimha - viṣṇu) who killed your great grandfather (hiraṇyakaśipu) before. viṣṇureṣa mahāprajṣastvāṁ vaṣchayitumāgataḥ ||3-71-28 He is viṣṇu of great intellect, who has come to deceive you. baliruvāca hanta tasmai pradāsyāmi devāyemaṁ pratigraham | anugrahakaraṁ devamīdṛśaṁ jagataḥ prabhum ||3-71-29 bali said: I am giving this gift to that lord. The Lord, the lord of world is providing blessings in this manner. brahmaṇo'pi garīyāṁsaṁ pātraṁ lapsyāmahe vayam | avaśyaṁ cāsuraśreṣṭha dātavyaṁ dīkṣitena vai ||3-71-30 We have got the one superior to brahma as beneficiary. O the best among asura-s! The one who is observing vow shall definitely give what is to be given. ityuktvāsurasaṅghānāṁ madhye vairochanistada | devāya pradadau tasmai padāni trīṇi viṣṇave ||3-71-31 (vaiśampāyana continued: O janamejaya!) Saying this, among the groups of the asura-s, the son of virochana, bali, gave three feet of earth to viṣṇu (vāmana). prahrādauvāca dānaveśvara mā dāstvaṁ viprāyāsmai pratigraham | prahrāda said: O the lord of the sons of danu! Do not offer the gift to the one who is inwardly excited (vāmana - brahmin). nemaṁ vipraśiśuṁ manye nedṛśo bhavati dvijaḥ ||3-71-32 rūpeṇānena daityendra satyameva bravīmi te | He is not the child of the one who is inwardly excited (Brahmin). A twice born can not be in this form. O the king of the sons of diti! I am telling you the truth. nārasiṁhamahaṁ manye tameva punarāgatam ||3-71-33 I recognize him as the man-lion, who has come again. evamuktastadā tena prahrādenāmitaujasā | prahrādamabravīdvākyamidaṁ nirbhartsayanniva ||3-71-34 (vaiśampāyana said: O janamejaya!) bali, who was told thus by prahrāda of unlimited splendor, spoke these words to prahrāda, as though he was speaking against him. baliruvāca dehīti yācate yo hi pratyākhyāti ca yo'sura | ubhayorapyalakṣmyā vai bhāgastaṁ vishate naram ||3-71-35 bali said: The one who requests saying give and the one who rejects the request, O asura! Among these two, the one who rejects obtains the portion of poverty of both. pratijṣāya tu yo vipre na dadāti pratigraham | sa yāti narakaṁ pāpī mitragotrasamanvitaḥ ||3-71-36 The one who does not give the gift to the one who is excited inwards (Brahmin), after agreeing to do so, that sinner shall go to hell along with his friends, family and race. alakṣmībhayabhīto'haṁ dadāmyasmai vasuṁdharām | Afraid of the fear of poverty, I shall provide him with earth (as per his request). pratigrahītā cāpyanyaḥ kaśchidasmāddvijo'tha vai ||3-71-37 nādhiko vidyate yasmāttaddadāmi vasuṁdharām | No twice born is seen, more deserving than him to give the gift. Hence I am giving him the gift of earth. hṛdayasya ca me tuṣṭiḥ parā bhavati dānava ||3-71-38 dṛṣṭvā vāmanarūpeṇa yācantaṁ dvijapuṅgavam | O the son of danu! I have great pleasure in my heart, seeing the best among the twice born, requesting (for earth) in the form of vāmana. eṣa tasmātpradāsyāmi na sthāsyāmi nivāritaḥ ||3-71-39 Hence I am giving him (what he asked). I will not stop if you prevent me. bhūyaścha prābravīdevaṁ vāmanaṁ viprarūpiṇam | svalpaiḥ svalpamate kiṁ te padaistribhiranuttamam ||3-71-40 (vaiśampāyana continued: O janamejaya!). Again bali said to Lord vāmana, in the form of the one who is excited inward: O! the one with little intellect! What is the three feet, comparable to none, for you? kṛtsnāṁ dadāmi te vipra pṛthivīṁ sāgarairvṛtām | O the one who is excited inwards! I shall give you this entire earth surrounded by ocean. vāmana uvāca na pṛthvīṁ kāmaye kṛtsnāṁ saṁtuṣṭo'smi padaistribhiḥ | eṣa eva ruciṣyo me varo dānavasattama ||3-71-41 vāmana said: I do not want the entire earth. I am happy with three feet (of earth). O the best among the sons of danu! This is the boon to my liking. vaiśampāyana uvāca tathāstviti baliḥ procya sparśayāmāsa dānavaḥ | padāni trīṇi devāya viṣṇave'mitatejase ||3-71-42 vaiśampāyana said: Saying let it be, bali, the son of danu, gave three feet of earth to lord viṣṇu having unlimited splendor. toye tu patite haste vāmano'bhūdavāmanaḥ | sarvadevamayaṁ rūpaṁ darśayāmāsa vai vibhuḥ ||3-71-43 As the water fell on his hand, vāmana (the dwarf) became avāmana (universal form). The lord showed his universal form, full of all devas. bhūḥ pādau dyauḥ śiraścāsya candrādityau ca cakṣuṣī | pādāṅgulyaḥ piśācāścha hastāṅgulyaścha guhyakāḥ ||3-71-44 The earth was his feet. The sky was his head. The sun and moon were his eyes. The toes of his feet were flesh eating demons (piśāca). The fingers of his hands were guhyakas. viśvedevāścha jānusthā jaṅghe sādhyāḥ surottamāḥ | yakṣā nakheṣu saṁbhūtā lekhāścāpsarasastathā ||3-71-45 The viśvadeva were his knees. The sadhya-s, the best among deva-s, were his shanks. The yakṣa-s were being born from his nails and the divine women from the lines (on his hands). taḍidvṛṣṭiḥ suvipulā keśāḥ sūryāṁśavastathā | tārakā romakūpāṇi romāṇi ca maharṣayaḥ ||3-71-46 His great looks were lightning. His hair was sun rays. The hair pores on his skin were stars and the sages were his hairs. bāhavo vidiśaścāsya diśaḥ shrotre tathaiva ca | ashvinau shravanau cāsya nāsā vāyurmahābalaḥ ||3-71-47 His arms were the sub directions and ears the directions. The ear lobes were ashvin-s and his nose, the powerful wind. prasādaścandramāścaiva mano dharmastathaiva ca | satyamasyābhavadvāṇī jihvā devī sarasvatī ||3-71-48 His pleasure is the moon as well as his mind dharma. His words are truth. His tongue is Goddess sarasvati. grīvā ditirmahādevī tāluḥ sūryaścha dīptimān | dvāraṁ svargasya nābhirvai mitrastvaṣṭā ca vai bhruvau ||3-71-49 His neck is the great goddess diti. His palate is the blazing sun. His navel is the entrance to heaven. His eyebrows are mitra and tvaṣṭā. mukhaṁ vaiśvānaraścāsya vṛṣaṇau tu prajāpatiḥ | hṛdayaṁ bhagavānbrahmā puṁstvaṁ vai viśvato muniḥ ||3-71-50 His face is vaiśvānara, the fire god. His testicles are prajāpati, the lord of beings. His heart is lord brahmā. His manliness is sage viśvata. pṛṣṭhe'sya vasavo devā marutaḥ pādasandhiṣu | sarvacchandāṁsi daśanā jyotīṁṣi vimalāḥ prabhāḥ ||3-71-51 His back side is vasus. His knee joints are maruts. His teeth are the meters. His brightness is his splendor. ūrū rudro mahādevo dhairyaṁ cāsya mahārṇavaḥ | ūdare cāsya gandharvā bhujagāścha mahābalāḥ ||3-71-52 His thighs are the great rudras. His courage is the great oceans. His belly is gandharva-s and the highly powerful serpents. lakṣmīrmedhā dhṛtiḥ kāntiḥ sarvavidyā ca vai kaṭiḥ | lalāṭamasya paramasthānaṁ ca paramātmanaḥ ||3-71-53 His intellect is goddess lakṣmī. His brightness is goddess dhṛti. His waist is all knowledge. His forehead is the ultimate place of the supreme soul. sarvajyotīṁṣi yānīha tapaḥ śakrastu devarāṭ | tasya devādhidevasya tejo hyāhurmahātmanaḥ ||3-71-54 All the lights are his penance. The king of deva-s, śakra, is the splendor of the great soul, the lord of devas. stanau kakṣau ca vedāścha oṣṭhau cāsya makhāḥ sthitāḥ | iṣṭayaḥ paśubandhāścha dvijānāṁ cheṣṭitāni ca ||3-71-55 His breasts and armpits are Vedas. Both his lips are sacrifices. His desires are the animal sacrifices and the rituals observed by the twice born. tasya devamayaṁ rūpaṁ dṛṣṭvā viṣṇormahāsurāḥ | abhyasarpanta saṅkruddhāḥ pataṅgā iva pāvakam ||3-71-56 Seeing that universal form of viṣṇu, full of deva-s, the great asura-s became angry and surrounded him like insects surrounding the fire. iti śrīmahābhārate khileṣu harivaṁśe bhaviṣyaparvaṇi vāmanaprādurbhāve viśvarūpaprakāśe ekasaptatitamo'dhyāyaḥ This is the seventyfirst chapter of bhaviṣyaparva, harivaṁśa, khila of mahābhārata, in the manifestation of vāmana, vāmana transforms to trivikrama nīlakaṇṭha commentary · 3-71-18 vaṣchitastvamiti śukraḥ | navaṣchita iti balirityādi yathāyogamūhyam || īti śrīmahābharate khileṣu harivaṁśe viṣṇuparvaṇi ṭīkāyāmekasaptatitamo'dhyāyaḥ
