Parva 3 Chapter 72: viṣṇorādeśāt baleḥ pātālapraveśaḥ tatkṛtaviṣṇustavaḥ baliṁ prati garuḍasya uktipratyuktī vāmanastavaphalakathanaṁ ca - following viṣṇu's instruction, bali enters pātāla, hymn to viṣṇu by bali (mokṣaviṁśaka) etc.

vaiśampāyana uvāca śṛṇu nāmāni sarveṣāṁ rūpāṇyabhijanāni ca | āyudhāni ca mukhyāni dānavānāṁ mahātmanām ||3-72-1

Translation

vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) Now hear the names of the great souls, the sons of danu, their forms, their lineage and their prominent weapons. viprachittiḥ śibiḥ śaṅkurayaḥśaṅkustathaiva ca | ayaḥśirā aśvaśirā hayagrīvaścha vīryavān ||3-72-2 viprachitti, shibi, śaṅku, ayaḥśaṅku, ayaḥśira, aśvaśirā and the valiant hayagrīva, vegavānketumānugraḥ sogravyagro mahāsuraḥ | puṣkaraḥ puṣkalaścaiva sāśvo'śvapatireva ca ||3-72-3 vegavān, ketumān, ugra, and the great demon agravyagra, puṣkara, puṣkala, sāśva, ashvapati, prahrādo'śvaśirāḥ kumbhaḥ saṁhrādo gaganapriyaḥ | anuhrādo hariharau vārāhaḥ saṁharo rujaḥ ||3-72-4 prahrāda, ashvashira, kumbha, saṁhrāda, gaganapriya, anuhrāda, harihara, vārāha, samhāra, ruja, vṛṣaparvā virūpākṣo aticandraḥ sulocanaḥ | niṣprabhaḥ suprabhaḥ śrīmāṁstathaiva ca nirūdaraḥ ||3-72-5 vṛṣaparvā, virūpākṣa, aticandra, sulocana, niṣprabha, suprabha, śrīmān, as also nirūdara, ekavaktro mahāvaktro dvivaktraḥ kālasaṁnibhaḥ | śarabhaḥ shalabhashcaiva kuṇapaḥ kulapaḥ krathaḥ ||3-72-6 ekavaktra, mahāvaktra, dvivaktra, kālasaṁnibha, sharabha, shalabha, and also kuṇapa, kulapa, kratha, bṛhatkīrtirmahāgarbhaḥ śaṅkukarṇo mahādhvaniḥ | dīrghajihvo'rkavadano mṛdubāhurmṛdupriyaḥ ||3-72-7 bṛhatkīrti, mahāgarbha, śaṅkukarṇa, mahādhvani, dīrghajihva, arkavadana, mṛdubāhu, mṛdupriya, vāyurgaviṣṭho namuchiḥ shambaro vikṣaro mahān | candrahantā krodhahantā krodhavardhana eva ca ||3-72-8 vāyu, gaviṣṭha, namuchi, shambara, and the great vikṣara, candrahantā, krodhahantā and krodhavardhana, kālakaḥ kālakākṣaścha vṛtraḥ krodho vimokṣaṇaḥ | gaviṣṭhaścha haviṣṭhaścha pralambo narakaḥ pṛthuḥ ||3-72-9 kālaka, kālakākṣa, vṛtra, krodha, vimokṣaṇa, gaviṣṭha, haviṣṭha, pralamba, naraka and pṛthu, candratāpanavātāpī ketumānbaladarpitaḥ | asilomā pulomā ca bāṣkalaḥ pramado madaḥ ||3-72-10 candratāpana, vātāpi, ketumān, baladarpita, asilomā, pulomā, bāṣkala, pramada and mada, śṛgālavadanaścaiva karālaḥ keshireva ca | ekākṣaśchaikabāhuścha tuhuṇḍaḥ sṛmalaḥ sṛpaḥ ||3-72-11 śṛgālavadana, as also karāla, keshi, ekākṣa, ekakabāhu, tuhuṇḍa, sṛmala and sṛpa - ete cānye ca bahavaḥ kramamāṇaṁ trivikramam | upatasthurmahātmānāṁ viṣṇuṁ daityagaṇāstadā ||3-72-12 as the conqueror of the three worlds, viṣṇu, the great soul, took the steps, these and many other sons of diti, came near to him. prāsodyatakarāḥ kechidvyāditāsyāḥ kharasvanāḥ | śataghnīcakrahastāścha vajrahastāstathā pare ||3-72-13 Some of them had barbed missiles (prāsa) in their hands. Some had opened their mouths. Some had donkey's sounds. Some held clubs with iron spikes (shataghni) and wheels (cakra) and others held the weapon, thunderbolt (vajra) in their hands. khaḍgapaṭṭiśahastāścha paraśvadhadharāḥ pare | prāsamudgarahastāścha tathā parighapāṇayaḥ ||3-72-14 Some held swords and spears with three points (paṭṭiśa) and others had axes (parashvadha) in their hands. Some had barbed missiles (prāsa) and hammers (mudgara) and others were holding iron clubs (parigha) in their hands. mahāśanivyagrakarā mauśalāstu mahābalāḥ | mahāvṛkṣodyatakarāstathaiva ca dhanurdharāḥ ||3-72-15 Some held huge rocks (mahāśani) in their hands. Some highly powerful demons had clubs (musala). Some had huge trees in their hands. Also some were holding bows. gadābhuśuṇḍihastāścha vajrahastāstathā pare | mahāpaṭṭiśahastāścha tathā parighapāṇayaḥ ||3-72-16 Some had maces (gada) and fire-arms (bhuśuṇḍi) and others were holding thunderbolts (vajra) in their hands. Some were holding huge spears (mahapaṭṭiśa) and iron clubs (parigha) in their hands. asikampanahastāścha dānavā yuddhadurmadāḥ | nānāpraharaṇā ghorā nānāveṣā mahābalāḥ ||3-72-17 The terrible sons of danu, having false pride of victory in battle, had swords (asi), weapons and variety of weapons. The powerful demons were having variety of forms. kūrmakukkuṭavaktrāścha hastivaktrāstathā pare | kharoṣṭravadanāścaiva varāhavadanāstathā ||3-72-18 Some demons had the face of tortoises and cocks. Some had the face of elephants. Some had the face of donkeys and camels as well as the face of boars. bhīmā makaravaktrāścha śiśumāramukhāstathā | mārjāraśukavaktrāścha dīrghavaktrāścha dānavāḥ ||3-72-19 Some had the face of huge sharks and dolphins (or the Gangetic porpoise). Some had faces of cats and parrots. Some of the sons of danu had long faces. garuḍānanāḥ khaḍgamukhā mayūravadanāstathā | aśvavaktrā babhruvaktrā ghorā mṛgamukhāstathā ||3-72-20 Some had the faces of garuḍa and rhinoceros. Some had faces of peacocks. Some had mouths of horses. Some had reddish brown mouths. Some had terrible faces of animals. uṣṭraśalyakavaktrāścha dīrghavaktrāścha dānavāḥ | nakulasyeva vaktrāścha pārāvatamukhāstathā ||3-72-21 Some had faces of camels and porcupines. Some of the sons of danu had long faces. Some had faces of mongoose and others had the faces of pārāvata (pigeon, snake or monkey). cakravākamukhāścaiva godhavaktrāstathā pare | tathā mṛgānanāḥ śūrā gojādimahiṣānanāḥ ||3-72-22 Some had the faces of the bird Anas Casarca (cakravāka) and others had the face of godha (snake). Some valiant demons had the face of animals, gojādi and bullocks. kṛkalāsamukhāścaiva vyāghravaktrāstathā pare | ṛkṣaśārdūlavaktrāścha siṁhavaktrāstathā pare ||3-72-23 Some had the faces of chameleon. Others had the faces of tigers. Some others had the faces of bears, leopards and lions. gajendracharmavasanāstathā kṛṣṇājināmbarāḥ | cīrasaṁvṛtagātrāścha tathā phalakavāsasaḥ ||3-72-24 Some were wearing elephant skins and the skins of black antelopes. Some covered their bodies with tree barks as well as barks of plants. uṣṇīṣiṇo mukuṭinastathā kuṇḍalino'surāḥ | kirīṭino lambaśikhāḥ kambugrīvāḥ suvarchasaḥ ||3-72-25 The asura-s were wearing turbans, diadems, ear rings and crowns. They had long hair. They wore bracelets on the neck and they were radiant. nānāveṣadharā daityā nānāmālyānulepanāḥ | The sons of diti were wearing varieties of clothes. They were decorated with variety of garlands. Their bodies were smeared with varieties of pastes. svānyāyudhāni dīptāni pragṛhyāsurasattamāḥ ||3-72-26 kramamāṇaṁ hṛṣikeśamupātiṣṭhanta dānavāḥ | As the lord of senses (viṣṇu, vāmana) was taking the steps, the best among the asura-s, the sons of danu, taking their various weapons which were blazing, went near and attacked him. pramathya sarvāndaiteyānpādahastatalaiḥ prabhuḥ ||3-72-27 The lord oppressed all the sons of diti, beating them with his hands and feet. rūpaṁ kṛtvā mahākāyaṁ jahārāśu sa medinīm | trailokyaṁ kramamāṇasya dyutirādityasaṁbhavā ||3-72-28 Taking up the form of a huge body, the lord took away the earth, the splendorous lord, measuring the three worlds, having splendor equal to the sun. tasya vikramato bhūmiṁ candrāditau stanāntare | nabhaḥ prakramamāṇasya sakthideshe vyavasthitau | paraṁ vikramamāṇasya jānudeśe vyavasthitau ||3-72-29 As the lord was measuring the earth, the moon and the sun were between his breasts. As the lord was measuring the sky, the moon and the sun were near his thighs. As he was measuring the top, the moon and the sun were near his knee. viṣṇoramitavīryasya vadantyevaṁ dvijātayaḥ | The twice born say that the valiance of viṣṇu is unlimited. jitvā lokatrayaṁ kṛtsnaṁ hatvā cāsurapuṅgavān ||3-72-30 dadau śakrāya vasudhāṁ harirlokanamaskṛtaḥ | Conquering the entire three worlds, and killing the chief asura-s, hari, to whom the world pays obeisance, gave the earth to śakra (indra). sutalaṁ nāma pātālamadhastādvasudhātale ||3-72-31 balerdattaṁ bhagavatā viṣṇunā prabhaviṣṇunā | The netherworld, named sutalaṁ, located below the earth, was given to bali by the lord viṣṇu, the splendorous viṣṇu. tadavāpyāsuraśreṣṭhaścakāra matimuttamām ||3-72-32 rasātalatale vāsamakarodasurādhipaḥ | With the best intelligence, bali accepted the netherworld. The king of asura-s, bali, lived at the netherworld, rasātala. tatrasthashcha mahātejā dhyānaṁ paramamāsthitaḥ ||3-72-33 uvāca vacanaṁ dhīmānviṣṇuṁ lokanamaskṛtam | The one with high splendor, bali, stayed at rasātala and took up meditation. He, the one with intellect, spoke the following words to viṣṇu, to whom the world pays obeisance. kiṁ mayā deva kartavyaṁ brūhi sarvamaśeṣataḥ | O lord! What is my duty? You may tell me all, without leaving anything. tato daityādhipaṁ prāha devo viṣṇuḥ surottamaḥ ||3-72-34 Then the lord viṣṇu, the best among deva-s, told bali, the king of the sons of diti. viṣṇuruvāca dadāmi te mahābhāga parituṣṭo'smi te'sura | varaṁ varaya bhadraṁ te yatheṣṭaṁ kāmamāpnuhi ||3-72-35 viṣṇu said: O the one of great fortune! I am pleased with you. O asura! Accept a boon from me. Let there be good to you. Obtain all that you desire. mā ca śakrasya vacanaṁ pratihāsīḥ kathaṁchana | ahamājṣāpayāmi tvām śreyaścaivamavāpsyasi ||3-72-36 I am ordering you, never to reject the words of śakra. You will have good fortune in this way. atha daityādhipaṁ prāha viṣṇurdevādhipānujaḥ | vācā paramayā devo vareṇyaḥ prabhurīśvaraḥ ||3-72-37 (vaiśampāyana continued: O janamejaya!) Then viṣṇu, the younger brother of the king of deva-s (indra), the most superior lord, the best among respected, the lord, the lord of lords, told the king of the sons of diti using prominent words: yattvayā salilaṁ dattaṁ gṛhītaṁ pāṇinā mayā | tasmātte daitya devebhyo nāsti jātu bhayaṁ kvachit ||3-72-38 The water given by you was accepted with my hands. Hence, O the son of diti, you will have no fear from the deva-s ever. sutalaṁ nāma pātālaṁ tatra tvaṁ sānugo vasa | sarvadaityagaṇaiḥ sārdhaṁ matprasādānmahāsura ||3-72-39 O great asura! With my pleasure, you may live in the netherworld named sutalaṁ along with your followers and all the groups of the sons of diti. na ca te devadevasya śakrasyāmitatejasaḥ | śāsanaṁ pratihantavyaṁ smaratā śāsanaṁ mama ||3-72-40 Remembering my order, you shall never disobey the order of the lord of deva-s, śakra, having unlimited splendour. devatāścāpi te sarvāḥ pūjyā eva mahāsura | O great asura! Worship all deva-s as well. bhogāṁścha vividhansamyagyajṣāṁścha sahadakṣiṇān ||3-72-41 prāpsyase ca mahābhāga divyānkāmānyathepsitān | O the one of good fortune! You shall enjoy many luxuries, sacrifices along with tributes as well as divine desires. iha cāmutra cākṣayyānvividhāṁścha paricchadān | daityādhipatyaṁ ca sadā matprasādādavāpsyasi ||3-72-42 Due to my pleasure, you shall obtain the lordship over all the sons of diti, always. You shall also enjoy many items in this world as well as in the other world. yadā ca tāṁ mayā proktāṁ maryādāṁ cālayiṣyasi | vadhiṣyanti tadā hi tvāṁ nāgapāśairmahābalāḥ ||3-72-43 If you break this code of conduct as stated by me, the highly powerful serpents shall tie you up with the serpent-knot. namaskāryāścha te nityaṁ mahendrādyā divaukasaḥ | mama jyeṣṭhaḥ suraśreṣṭha śāsanaṁ pratigṛhyatām ||3-72-44 You shall always pay obeisance to the deva-s such as the great indra. īndra, the best among deva-s is my elder brother. You shall accept his order. baliruvāca devadeva mahābhāga śaṅkhacakragadādhara | surāsuraguro śreṣṭha sarvalokamaheshvara | tatrāsato me pātāle bhāgaṁ brūhi surottama ||3-72-45 bali said: O the lord of lords! O the one of great fortune! O the one who holds the conch, the wheel and the mace! O the best preceptor of deva-s as well as asura-s! O the great lord of all the worlds! O the best among deva-s! Please assign a portion for me who lives in the netherworld. mamānnamaśanaṁ deva prāśanārthamariṁdama | tadvadasva suraśreṣṭha tṛptiryena mamākṣayā ||3-72-46 O lord! Please assign my food , O the oppressor of foes, for the sake of my consumption. O the best among deva-s! Please assign my portion so that I, residing in the netherworld, am always satisfied. śrībhagavānuvāca aśrotriyaṁ śrāddhamadhītamavrata- madakṣiṇaṁ yajṣamanartvijā hutaṁ | aśraddhayā dattamasaṁskṛtaṁ havi- rete pradattāstava daitya bhāgāḥ ||3-72-47 The auspicious lord said: (śrāddha) ceremony performed to honour and please the dead ancestors, performed by brahmins who are not conversant with the sacred knowledge of Vedas, studies made without observing celibacy, sacrifices without tributes, oblations without priests, offerings devoid of care, uncooked oblations - all these, O the son of diti, shall be your portion. puṇyaṁ madveṣiṇāṁ yaccha madbhaktadveṣiṇāṁ tathā | krayavikrayasaktānāṁ puṇyaṁ yachcāgnihotriṇām ||3-72-48 The merit of those who hate me as well as those who hate my devotees, the merit of brahmins who offer oblations to fire and who indulge in buying and selling, aśraddhayā ca yaddānaṁ dadatāṁ yajatāṁ tathā | tatsarvaṁ tava daityendra matprasādādbhaviṣyati ||3-72-49 the merit of those who donate and perform sacrifices without care - all these, O the king of the sons of diti, shall become your portion due to my pleasure. vaiśampāyana uvāca etacchrutvā tu vacanaṁ balirviṣṇormahātmanaḥ | evamastviti taṁ proktvā pātālamasurottamaḥ | pravivesha mahānādo devājṣāṁ pratipālayan ||3-72-50 vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) Hearing these words of the great soul viṣṇu, bali said: Let it be. Saying this, the best among asura-s (bali), entered the netherworld, with a loud sound, obeying the order of the lord. etasminnantare cāpi viṣṇustridaśapūjitaḥ | bhagavānapi rājyānāṁ pravibhāgāṁścakāra ha ||3-72-51 Meanwhile, lord viṣṇu, worshipped by the deva-s, assigned the various regions of the world. dadau pūrvāṁ diśaṁ chaindrīṁ śakrāyāmitatejase | yāmyāṁ yamāya devāya pitṛrājṣe mahātmane ||3-72-52 The lord assigned the eastern direction, aindri, to śakra (indra) having unlimited splendor. The lord assigned the southern direction to the great soul, yama, the king of ancestors. paśchimāṁ tu diśaṁ prādādvaruṇāya mahātmane | uttarāṁ ca kuberāya yakṣādhipataye disham ||3-72-53 The western direction was given to the great soul varuṇa. The northern direction was given to kubera, the king of yakṣas. adhaḥsthāṁ nāgarājāya somāyordhvāṁ diśaṁ dadau | The downward direction was assigned to the lord of serpents, ananta. The upward direction was assigned to soma, the moon. evaṁ vibhajya trailokyaṁ viṣṇurbalavatāṁ varaḥ ||3-72-54 jagāma tridivaṁ devaḥ pūjyamāno maharṣibhiḥ | Assigning the three worlds thus, viṣṇu, the best among the powerful, returned to heaven, worshipped by the great sages as well. vāmanaḥ sarvabhūteśaḥ pratiṣṭhāpya ca vāsavam ||3-72-55 vāmana, the lord of all beings installed vāsava (indra) in heaven. tasminprayāte durdharṣe vāmane'mitatejasi | sarve mumudire devāḥ puraskṛtya shatakratum ||3-72-56 vāmana, the one with unlimited splendor, difficult to conquer, left heaven. All deva-s, beginning with the one who performed one hundred sacrifices, śakra, enjoyed the most. vaiśampāyana uvāca gate tu tridivaṁ kṛṣṇe baddhvā vairochaniṁ balim | nāgaiḥ saptaśirobhishcha kambalāśvatarādibhiḥ ||3-72-57 vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) As kṛṣṇa (viṣṇu) left heaven, the serpents with seven heads, such as kambala and ashvatara, tied up bali, the son of virochana. nāgabandhanaduḥkhārtaṁ baliṁ vairochaniṁ tataḥ | yadṛcchayāsau devarṣirnāradaḥ pratyapadyata ||3-72-58 Accidently, the deva sage, nārada, arrived near bali, the son of virochana, distressed by the sorrow of serpent-knot. sa taṁ kṛcchragataṁ dṛṣṭvā kṛpayābhipariplutaḥ | uvāca dānavaśreṣṭhaṁ mokṣopāyaṁ dadāmi te ||3-72-59 Seeing him (bali) in distress, the sage was overcome with kindness. The sage told the best among the sons of danu: I will give you the means for release. stavaṁ devādhidevasya vāsudevasya dhīmataḥ | anādinidhanasyāsya akṣayasyāvyayasya ca ||3-72-60 I will give you the hymn of the lord of lords, the one who illuminates all (the one who dwells in all beings), the one with intellect, the one having neither the beginning nor the end, the un-decaying one, the imperishable one. tamadhīṣvātha daityendra viśuddhenāntarātmanā | tadgatastanmanā bhūtvā drutaṁ mokṣamavāpsyasi ||3-72-61 O the indra of the sons of diti! Recite that hymn with a pure internal soul, with your mind reaching the lord. Then you will be quickly released from the knots. tato virochanasutaḥ prayataḥ prāṣjaliḥ śuchiḥ | mokṣaviṁśakamavyagro nāradātsamadhītavān ||3-72-62 Then, bali, the son of virochana, piously disposed, with folded hands, with a pure and steady mind, learned mokṣaviṁśaka (the hymn of release having twenty parts) from the deva sage, nārada. tamadhītya stavaṁ divyaṁ nāradena samīritam | pṛthivī choddhṛtā yena taṁ jajāpa mahāsuraḥ ||3-72-63 Then the great demon, bali, recited that divine hymn, spoken by nārada, capable of lifting the earth (from distress). oṁ namo'stvanantapataye akṣayāya mahātmane | jaleśayāya devāya padmanabhāya viṣṇave ||3-72-64 (bali said) oṁ! I bow to the lord ananta, the lord of serpents, the un-decaying lord, the great soul, the lord of water, the lord viṣṇu, having lotus on his navel. saptasūryavapuḥ kṛtvā trī.ṇllokānkāntavānasi | bhagavankālakālastvaṁ tena satyena mokṣaya ||3-72-65 I bow to the lord, who measured the three worlds, taking up the body, having the splendor of seven suns. Oh the lord of the lord of Time! By this truth, grant me liberation. naṣṭacandrārkagagane kṣīṇayajṣatapaḥkriye | punashcintayase lokāṁstena satyena mokṣaya ||3-72-66 As the sky becomes devoid of the moon and the sun and as the sacrifices and penances decline, you again recalls the worlds. By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation. brahmarudrendravāyvagnisaridbhujagaparvatāḥ | tvatsthā dṛṣṭvā dvijendreṇa tena satyena mokṣaya ||3-72-67 The kings of twice born, see brahma, rudra, indra, the lord of wind (vāyu), the lord of fire, rivers, serpents and mountains in the lord. By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation. mārkaṇḍena purā kalpe pravishya jaṭharaṁ tava | carācaragataṁ dṛṣṭaṁ tena satyena mokṣaya ||3-72-68 In the earlier era, mārkanḍeya had entered your belly and saw all the moving and fixed beings of the world inside you. By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation. eko vidyāsahāyastvaṁ yogī yogamupāgataḥ | punastrailokyamutsṛjya tena satyena mokṣaya ||3-72-69 You are the only one lord, assisted by knowledge. You are yogi, yoked with yoga. You created all the three worlds again. By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation. jalaśayyāmupāsīno yoganidrāmupāgataḥ | lokāṁścintayase bhūyastena satyena mokṣaya ||3-72-70 You lie in the bed of water. Entering the sleep of yoga, you again think about the world. By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation. vārāhaṁ rūpamāsthāya vedayajṣapuraskṛtam | dharā jaloddhṛtā yena tena satyena mokṣaya ||3-72-71 Taking up the form of the great boar, keeping the deva-sacrifices in front, you uplifted the earth. By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation. uddhṛtya daṁṣṭrayā yajṣāṁstrīnpiṇḍānkṛtavānasi | tvaṁ pitṝṇāmapi hare tena satyena mokṣaya ||3-72-72 Uplifting the sacrifices with your fang, you assigned three portions of the offerings to the ancestors as well. By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation. pradudruvuḥ surāḥ sarve hiraṇyākṣabhayārditāḥ | paritrātāstvayā deva tena satyena mokṣaya ||3-72-73 All the deva-s ran away, oppressed by the fear of hiraṇyakṣa. O lord! They were protected by you. By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation. dīrghavaktreṇa rūpeṇa hiraṇyākṣasya saṁyuge | śiro jahāra cakreṇa tena satyena mokṣaya ||3-72-74 In the battle, you fought with hiraṇyakṣa, in the form of the great boar, having a long mouth and cut off his head with your cakra (wheel). By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation. bhagnamūrdhāsthimastiṣko hiraṇyakaśipuḥ purā | huṁkāreṇa hato daityastena satyena mokṣaya ||3-72-75 Earlier you killed hiraṇyakaśipu with the sound huṁ (huṁkāra). The son of diti (hiraṇyakaśipu) was killed, having his head, bones and brain fully smashed. By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation. dānavābhyāṁ hṛtā vedā brahmaṇaḥ paśyataḥ purā | paritrātāstvayā deva tena satyena mokṣaya ||3-72-76 Long ago, the Vedas were taken away by the sons of danu, as brahma was watching. You protected the Vedas. By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation. kṛtvā hayaśirorūpaṁ hatvā tu madhukaiṭabhau | brahmaṇe te'rpitā vedāstena satyena mokṣaya ||3-72-77 Taking up the form of hayashira, you killed madhu and kaiṭabha and gave the Vedas to brahma. By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation. devadānavagandharvā yakṣasiddhamahoragāḥ | antaṁ tava na pashyanti tena satyena mokṣaya ||3-72-78 Your end is not seen by deva-s, the sons of danu, gandharva-s, yakṣa-s, the great serpents. By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation. apāntaratamā nāma jāto devasya vai sutaḥ | kṛtāścha tena vedārthāstena satyena mokṣaya ||3-72-79 O lord! The one with the name apāntaratama, born as your son, O Lord, provided the meanings of all Vedas. By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation. vedayajṣāgnihotrāṇi pitṛyajṣahavīṁṣi ca | rahasyaṁ tava devasya tena satyena mokṣaya ||3-72-80 Vedas, sacrifices, fire-sacrifices and sacrifices for ancestors and the oblations are your secrets. By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation. ṛṣirdīrghatamā nāma jātyandho guruśāpataḥ | tvatprasādāccha cakṣuṣmāṁstena satyena mokṣaya ||3-72-81 The sage named dīrghatama (long darkness) was blind from birth, due to the curse of the preceptor. He regained his eye-sight due to your pleasure. By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation. grāhagrastaṁ gajendraṁ ca dīnaṁ mṛtyuvaśaṁ gatam | bhaktaṁ mokṣitavāṁstvaṁ hi tena satyena mokṣaya ||3-72-82 You, the lord, released your devotee, the king of elephants from the mouth of the crocodile, from the side of death. By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation. akṣayaścāvyayaścha tvaṁ brahmaṇyo bhaktavatsalaḥ | ucchritānāṁ niyantāsi tena satyena mokṣaya ||3-72-83 You are the un-decaying lord. You are imperishable. you are brahma. You are affectionate to your devotees. You control those rising with pride. By that truth, O Lord, grant me liberation. śaṅkhaṁ cakraṁ gadāṁ padmaṁ śārṅgaṁ garuḍameva ca | prasādayāmi śirasā te bandhānmokṣayantu mām ||3-72-84 I shall please the conch, wheel, mace, lotus, the bow śārṅgaṁ and garuḍa, bowing my head. They shall grant me liberation. śaṅkhacakragadātūṇaśārṅgaṁ ca garuḍādayaḥ | prasādayāmāsurhariṁ baliṁ mokṣaya bandhanāt ||3-72-85 (vaiśampāyana continued: O janamejaya!) The conch, wheel, mace, lotus, the bow śārṅgaṁ and garuḍa pleased lord hari and said: Please grant liberation to bali from knots. tataḥ prasanno bhagavānādideśa khageshvaram | garuḍaṁ nāgahantāraṁ baliṁ mokṣaya bandhanāt ||3-72-86 Then the lord became pleased (with bali) and sent the lord of birds, garuḍa, the killer of serpents, asking him to grant liberation to bali from the knots. tato vikṣipya garuḍaḥ pakṣāvatulavikramaḥ | jagāma vasudhāmūlaṁ yatrāste saṁyato baliḥ ||3-72-87 The garuḍa of unequalled valiance, waving his wings, arrived at the root of earth, the netherworld, where bali was tied up. āgamaṁ tasya vijṣāya nāgā muktvā mahāsuram | yayuḥ purīṁ bhogavatīṁ vainateyabhayārditāḥ ||3-72-88 Knowing about the arrival of garuḍa, the serpents released the great asura, bali. Then, oppressed by the fear of the son of vinata (garuḍa) the serpents went to the city of bhogavati. muktaṁ kṛṣṇaprasādena cintayānamadhomukham | bhraṣṭaśriyamuvācedaṁ garutmānpannagāśanaḥ ||3-72-89 bali, who was released due to the pleasure of kṛṣṇa, was immersed in thoughts and he kept his head down. The one who eats snakes, garuḍa spoke to bali, who had lost all his prosperity. garuḍa uvāca dānavendra mahābāho viṣṇustvāmabravītprabhuḥ | mukto nivasa pātāle saputrajanabāndhavaḥ ||3-72-90 garuḍa said: O the king (indra) of the sons of danu! O the one with powerful arms! Lord viṣṇu has said: You shall live free in the netherworld along with your sons and relatives. itastvayā na gantavyaṁ gavyūtimapi dānava | samayaṁ yadi bhindhyāstvaṁ mūrdhā te śatadhā bhavet ||3-72-91 O the son of danu! You shall not leave this place even to a place, twice the distance of calling from here. If you break this agreement, then your head shall shatter in to a hundred pieces. pakṣīndravacanaṁ śrutvā dānavendro'bravīdidam | sthito'smi samaye tasya anantasya mahātmanaḥ ||3-72-92 Hearing the words of the king (indra) of birds (garuḍa), the king (indra) of the sons of danu said: (Note 1) jīvyopāyaṁ tu bhagavānmama kiṣchitkarotu saḥ | ihastho'haṁ sukhāsīno yenāpyāye khageshvara ||3-72-93 (bali said) Let the lord arrange some means for my living. O the lord of birds! I shall live in this place comfortably, happily and satisfied. balestu vacanaṁ śrutvā garutmānidamabravīt | pūrvameva kṛtastena jīvyopāyo mahātmanā ||3-72-94 Hearing the words of bali, garuḍa spoke as follows: The great soul, the lord, has already assigned a means for living for you. vartayiṣyanti ye yajṣā vidhihīnā na ṛtvijaḥ | prāyaśchittamajānanto yajṣabhāgastatastava ||3-72-95 Some perform sacrifices, not as ordained and not with the priests. The portions of those sacrifices, performed without thinking, are for you. na teṣāṁ yajṣabhāgaṁ vai pratigṛhṇanti devatāḥ | anenāpyāyitabalaḥ sukhamātraṁ nivatsyasi ||3-72-96 The portions of sacrifices offered by them will not be accepted by the devas. You shall live here comfortably, getting your strength from those portions. vaiśampāyana uvāca saṁdeśametaṁ bhagavāndattavānkaśyapātmajaḥ | dānavendra mahābāho viṣṇustrailokyabhāvanaḥ ||3-72-97 vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) (garuḍa continued) O the king (indra) of the sons of danu! O the one with great arms! This message was given by the lord, the son of kashyapa, the one who is concerned with the welfare of the three worlds. imaṁ stavamanantasya sarvapāpapramochanam | yaḥ paṭheta naro bhaktyā tasya nashyati kilbiṣam ||3-72-98 If one recites, with devotion, this hymn of the lord having no end, capable of releasing from all sins, all his sins, injuries and diseases will vanish. gohatyāyāḥ pramuchyeta brahmaghno brahmahatyayā | aputro labhate putraṁ kanyā chaivepsitaṁ patim ||3-72-99 One will be released from the sin of killing cows. The killer of brahmin will be released from the sin of killing brahmins. The childless shall obtain children. The maiden will get a husband as per her wish. sadyo garbhātpramuchyeta garbhiṇī janayetsutam | The pregnant women will deliver children without any pain. ye ca mokṣaiṣiṇo loke yoginaḥ sāṅkhyakāpilāḥ ||3-72-100 stavenānena gacchanti śvetadvipamakalmaṣāḥ | Those of the world desirous of liberation, the yogis of sāṅkhya and kapila will reach the white island, devoid of all sins, by reciting this hymn. sarvakāmaprado hyeṣa stavo'nantasya kīrtyate ||3-72-101 Reciting this hymn of ananta will fulfill all desires. yaḥ paṭhetprātarutthāya śuchiḥ prayatamānasaḥ | sarvānkāmānavāpnoti mānavo nātra saṁśayaḥ ||3-72-102 If one recites this hymn early morning, purified with a pious mind, then he will obtain all his desires. There is no doubt. eṣa vai vāmano nāma prādurbhāvo mahātmanaḥ | vedavidbhirdvijaireva paṭhyate vaiṣṇavaṁ yaśaḥ ||3-72-103 This is the manifestation of the great soul, named vāmana. In this way, the twice-born, the experts of Vedas, study about the fame of viṣṇu. yastvimaṁ vāmanaṁ divyaṁ prādurbhāvaṁ mahātmanaḥ | śṛṇuyānniyato bhaktyā sadā parvasu parvasu ||3-72-104 If this divine manifestation of the great soul vāmana is heard, always with devotion, as ordained, during each half month, parānvijayate rājā yathā viṣṇurmahābalaḥ | yasho vimalamāpnoti vipulaṁ cāpnute vasu ||3-72-105 the king will conquer the enemies as the powerful viṣṇu (conquered the enemies of deva-s) and obtain pure fame and get immense wealth. priyo bhavati bhūtānāṁ sarveṣāṁ vāmano yathā | putrapautrāścha vardhante ārogyaṁ guṇasaṁpadaḥ ||3-72-106 Like vāmana, he will become dear to all beings. His sons and grandsons shall flourish. He will be endowed with good health and good qualities. prīyate paṭhataścāsya devadevo janārdanaḥ | sarvakāmayutaścaiva kṛṣṇadvaipāyano'bravīt ||3-72-107 The lord of lords, the one who excites men will be pleased with the one who studies the manifestation of vāmana and all his desires will be satisfied. Thus spoke kṛṣṇadvaipāyana, vyāsa. iti śrīmahābhārate khileṣu harivaṁśe bhaviṣyaparvaṇi vāmanaprādurbhāve dvisaptatitamo'dhyāyaḥ This is the seventy-second chapter of bhaviṣyaparva, harivaṁśa, khila of mahabhārata, in the manifestation of vāmana, following viṣṇu's instruction, bali enters pātāla, hymn to viṣṇu by bali (mokṣaviṁśaka) etc. (Note1) gītā press edition has the following additional line: sthito'smi samaye tasya anantasya mahātmanaḥ I shall stay here as agreed with the great soul, the one having no end.
