vaiśampāyana uvāca tataḥ saṁcintayāmāsa garuḍaṁ pakṣipuṁgavam | āgaccha tvaritaṁ tārkṣya iti viṣṇurjagatpatiḥ ||3-76-1

Translation

vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) Then, viṣṇu (kṛṣṇa), the Lord of the world, thought about garuḍa, the chief of birds and said: O tārkṣya (garuḍa), come quickly. tataḥ sa bhagavāṁstārkṣyo vedarāśiriti smṛtaḥ | balavānvikramī yogī śāstranetā kurūdvaha ||3-76-2 Then, O the one who causes progress to the kuru race (janamejaya)! vaiśampāyana continued) Lord tārkṣya (garuḍa), known as the soul of veda-s, powerful, valiant, the one who is fixed in yoga, the leader (expert) of śāstra-s, yajṣamūrtiḥ purāṇātmā sāmamūrdhā ca pāvanaḥ | ṛgvedapakṣavānpakṣī piṅgalo jaṭilākṛtiḥ ||3-76-3 who is sacrifice in body form, the ancient soul, whose head is sāmaveda as also sacred, whose wings are ṛgveda, the bird who is yellow in colour, having a body of feathers, tāmratuṇḍaḥ somaharaḥ śakrajetā mahāśirāḥ | pannagāriḥ padmanetraḥ sākṣādviṣṇurivāparaḥ ||3-76-4 who has a coppery red beak, who took away amṛta, who conquered indra, who has a great head, the enemy of serpents, whose eyes are as beautiful as the lotus and thus looks like another real viṣṇu, vāhanaṁ devadevasya dānavīgarbhakṛntanaḥ | rākṣasāsurasaṅghānāṁ jetā pakṣabalena yaḥ ||3-76-5 the vehicle of the Lord of gods, by only seeing whom the pregnancies of the women of the sons of danu are destroyed, the one who conquered the groups of rākṣasa-s and demons with the power of his wings, prādurāsīnmahāvīryaḥ keśavasyāgratastadā | jānubhyāmapatadbhūmau namo viṣṇo jagatpate ||3-76-6 the highly valiant one, appeared in front of keshava (kṛṣṇa, viṣṇu). Touching the ground with his knees, garuḍa said: I bow to you viṣṇu, the Lord of the world. namaste devadevesha hare svāminniti bruvan | pasparsha pāṇinā kṛṣṇaḥ svāgataṁ tārkṣyapuṁgavam ||3-76-7 garuḍa said: I bow to you, O Lord of the gods, O hari! O my lord. kṛṣṇa caressed him with his hands and welcomed the chief of birds, tārkṣya (garuḍa). ityuvāca tadā tārkṣyaṁ yāsye kailāsaparvatam | śūlinam draṣṭumicchāmi śaṅkaraṁ śāśvataṁ shivam ||3-76-8 Then kṛṣṇa said thus to tārkṣya: We shall go to the mountain kailāsa. I wish to see the one who holds spear, the lord who causes prosperity and auspiciousness, the eternal lord, the auspicious lord. bāḍamityabravīttārkṣya āruhyainaṁ janārdanaḥ | tiṣṭhadhvamiti hovāca yādavānpārśvavartinaḥ ||3-76-9 tārkṣya (garuḍa) said: Let it be so. The one who excites men, kṛṣṇa (viṣṇu) mounted on garuḍa and said "Stay" to those sons of yadu (yādava-s) who were standing by the side. tato yayau jagannātho diśaṁ prāguttarāṁ hariḥ | raveṇa mahatā tārkṣyastrailokyaṁ samakaṁpayat ||3-76-10 Then the lord of the world, hari, proceeded to the North-East direction. tārkṣya (garuḍa) shook all the three worlds by his great sound. sāgaraṁ kṣobhayāmāsa padbhyāṁ pakṣī vrajaṁstadā | pakṣeṇa parvatānsarvānvahandevaṁ janārdanam ||3-76-11 Then proceeding on the journey, the bird garuḍa, agitated the ocean with his feet and shook all the mountains with his wings, carrying the Lord who excites men (kṛṣṇa). tato devāḥ sagandharvā ākāśe'dhiṣṭhitāstadā | tuṣṭuvuḥ puṇḍarīkākṣaṁ vāgbhiriṣṭābhirīśvaram ||3-76-12 Then the deva-s and gandharvas standing in the sky pleased the Lord, the one with eyes as beautiful as the lotus with dear words: jaya deva jagannātha jaya viṣṇo jagatpate | jayājeya namo deva bhūtabhāvanabhāvana ||3-76-13 Victory to the lord! Victory to the lord of the universe! Victory to viṣṇu! Victory to the lord of the world! Victory to the conqueror! We bow to the lord who is interested in the welfare of all beings. namaḥ paramasiṁhāya daityadānavanāśana | jayājeya hare deva yogidhyeya parāgata ||3-76-14 We bow to the superior lion! We bow to the destroyer of the sons of diti and the sons of danu! Victory to the conqueror! O hari! O lord! O the one who is meditated upon by those fixed in yoga! The one who has gone to the other side (of life). nārāyaṇa namo deva kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇa hare hare | ādikartaḥ purāṇātmanbrahmayone sanātana ||3-76-15 O the one who is based in water (nārāyaṇa)! O lord! we bow to you. O kṛṣṇa! O kṛṣṇa! O hari! O hari! O the cause of the beginning! O the one with an ancient soul! O the one who is the source of brahma! O the eternal one! namaste sakaleśāya nirguṇāya guṇātmane | bhaktipriyāya bhaktāya namo dānavanāśana ||3-76-16 We bow to the lord of all! O the one having no qualities! O the one with a soul having all qualities! O the one who likes devotion. O the one who is a devotee! Bow to the destroyer of the sons of danu! acintyamūrtaye tubhyaṁ namaste sakaleshvara | ityādibhistadā devaṁ vāgbhirīśānamavyayam ||3-76-17 tuṣṭuvurdevagandharvā ṛṣayaḥ siddhacāraṇāḥ | O the one having a body that can not be thought of! Bow to the lord of all! With these words, the deva-s, gandharva-s, sages, siddha-s and cāraṇa-s praised the lord who has no decline. śṛṇvannevaṁ jagannāthaḥ stutivākyāni tāni ca ||3-76-18 yayau sārdhaṁ suragaṇairmunibhirvedapāragaiḥ | Hearing these praising words, the lord of the world proceeded along with the groups of deva-s and the sages who are experts in Veda-s, yatra pūrvaṁ svayaṁ viṣṇustapastepe sudāruṇam 3-76-19 lokavṛddhikaraḥ śrīmā.ṇllokānāṁ hitakāmyayā | to the place, where, long before, viṣṇu, the auspicious lord, the one who causes progress of the world, himself, performed a terrible penance, wishing for the welfare of the world, varṣāyutaṁ tapastaptaṁ viṣṇunā prabhaviṣṇunā ||3-76-20 where, viṣṇu, the splendorous viṣṇu, observed penance for ten thousand years, yatra viṣṇurjagannāthastapastaptvā sudāruṇam | dvidhākarotsvamātmānaṁ naranārāyaṇākhyayā ||3-76-21 where (in the hermitage of badarī) viṣṇu, the Lord of the world performed a most difficult penance, by splitting his own soul in two, named as nara and nārāyaṇa, gaṅgā yatra saricchreṣṭhā madhye dhāvati pāvanī | where the sacred gaṅga, the best among rivers, flows in the middle, yatra śakraḥ svayaṁ hatvā vṛtraṁ vedārthatattvagam ||3-76-22 brahmahatyāvināśārthaṁ tapo varṣāyutaṁ charat | where śakra himself observed penance for ten thousand years for destroying the sin of killing a Brahmin vṛtra, the exponent of the principles of veda, yatra siddhāścha siddhāḥ syurdhyātvā devaṁ janārdanam ||3-76-23 where siddha-s become accomplished by meditating on the lord who excites men (viṣṇu, kṛṣṇa) yatra hatvā raṇe rāmo rāvaṇaṁ lokarāvaṇam | etachcāsanamiccaṁścha tapo ghoramatapyata ||3-76-24 where, rāma, after killing rāvaṇa, who makes the people cry, in the battle field, performed a very difficult penance desiring the knowledge of the scriptures, devāścha munayashcaiva siddhiṁ yānti śuchivratāḥ | yatra nityaṁ jagannāthaḥ sākṣādvasati keśavaḥ ||3-76-25 where deva-s as well as sages, observing good vows, attain the high states, where keshava (kṛṣṇa) resides always in his real form, yatra yajṣāḥ pravartante nityaṁ munigaṇaiḥ saha | yasyāḥ smaraṇamātreṇa naraḥ svargaṁ gamiṣyati ||3-76-26 where sacrifices are performed daily along with groups of sages, only by remembering which place, man is capable of going to heaven, svargasopānamicchanti yāṁ puṇyāṁ munisattamāḥ | shatravo mitratāṁ yānti yatra nityaṁ nṛpottamam ||3-76-27 which sacred place, the best among the sages desire as a path to heaven, O the best among the kings (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) where enemies are always considered as friends, yāmāhuḥ puṇyaśīlānāṁ stānamuttamadharmiṇām | yatra viṣṇuṁ samārādhya devāḥ svargaṁ samāyayuḥ ||3-76-28 which is considered as the best place for those who are fixed in dharma having sacred habits, where, worshipping viṣṇu, the deva-s ascended heaven, siddhakṣetramidaṁ prāhurṛṣayo vītamatsarāḥ | which is said to be the field of the accomplished by sages devoid of competition. viśālāṁ badarīṁ viṣṇustāṁ draṣṭuṁ sakaleśvaraḥ ||3-76-29 sāyāhne cāmaragaṇairmunibhistattvadarśibhiḥ | pravivesha mahāpuṇyamṛṣijuṣṭaṁ tapovanam ||3-76-30 To see that vast land of badarī, viṣṇu (kṛṣṇa), the Lord of all beings, arrived in the evening, along with the groups of deva-s and sages who observe the principles, the highly sacred forest of penance (badarī), served by sages. agnihotrākule kāle pakṣivyāhārasaṁkule | nīḍasteṣu vihaṅgeṣu duhyamānāsu goṣu ca ||3-76-31 As the sacrificial fires were burning, as the groups of birds were chirping, as the birds were entering their nests, as the cows were being milked, ṛṣiṣvapyatha tiṣṭhatsu munivīreṣu sarvataḥ | samādhistheṣu siddheṣu cintayatsu janārdanam ||3-76-32 as the sages as well as all the valiant hermits were standing, as the siddha-s were meditating thinking about the Lord who excites people (viṣṇu, kṛṣṇa) adhiśriteṣu haviṣu jvālyamāneṣu cāgniṣu | hūyamāneṣu tatraiva pāvakeṣu samantataḥ ||3-76-33 as oblations were being poured, blazing the sacrificial fires, as sacrifices were being conducted with the fire all over, atithau pūjyamāne ca samdhyāviṣṭe jaganmaye | sa tasyāmatha velāyāṁ devaiḥ saha janārdanaḥ ||3-76-34 as all the world was honoring the guests in the evening, at that time, the one who excites men (viṣṇu, kṛṣṇa) along with the deva-s, vivesha badarīṁ viṣṇurmunijuṣṭāṁ tapomayīm | viṣṇu (kṛṣṇa) entered badarī, the abode of penance, served by sages. āśramasyātha madhyaṁ tu pravishya harirīśvaraḥ ||3-76-35 garuḍādavarūhyātha dīpikādīpite tadā | praveshe punḍarīkākṣaḥ sthitastāvatsahāmaraiḥ ||3-76-36 Coming to the center of the hermitage, which was lighted by lamps, lord hari, having eyes as beautiful as the lotus, alighted from garuḍa, and stood along with the devas. iti śrīmahābhārate khileṣu harivaṁśe bhaviśyaparvaṇi kailāsayātrāyāṁ ṣaṭsaptatitamo'dhyāyaḥ This is the seventy-sixth chapter of bhaviṣyaparva, harivaṁśa, khila of mahabhārata, in kalāsayātra, kṛṣṇa goes to badarika Ashram nīlakaṇṭha commentary · 3-76-1 tataḥ samiti || · 3-76-5 dānavīgarbhakṛntanaḥ yaddarśanamātrāddānavānāṁ garbhā naśyantītyarthaḥ || · 3-76-11 pakṣeṇa pakṣavātena parvatān kṣobhayāmāsetyanuṣajyate || · 3-76-14 parāgata sā kāṣṭā sā parā gati iti śrutyuktaparagatisvarūpaḥ | dairghyamārṣam || · 3-76-21 yatra badarikāśrame || · 3-76-24 etat śāsanam etāṁ śāstrājṣāṁ shakrena kṛtāṁ nirguṇamapi brāhmaṇaṁ hatvā brahmahatyāvrataṁ charedityevaṁ icchanpālayitumapi śeṣaḥ || iti śrīmahābhārate khileṣu harivaṁśe bhaviṣyaparvaṇi ṭīkāyāṁ ṣatsaptatitamo'dhyāyaḥ || 76 ||
