Parva 3 Chapter 77: śrīkṛṣṇasya badarikāśrame ātithyasvīkāraḥ - kṛṣṇa welcomed at badarika Ashram

vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) Then the group of sages, seeing that the Lord of lords (kṛṣṇa, viṣṇu) has arrived, immediately concluded the rituals of the sacrificial fires and honoured the best of the guests. munayo dīrghatapasaḥ samādhau kṛtaniśchayāḥ | jaṭino muṇḍinaḥ keciccirādhamanisaṁtatāḥ ||3-77-2 Some of the sages were engaged in long penances and firm in meditation with determination. Some were having hair locks. Some had shaved heads. Some had twisted veins. nirmajjā nīrasāḥ kechidvetālā iva kechana | aśmakuṭṭāśanaparāḥ parṇabhakṣāstathā pare ||3-77-3 Some sages were without marrow and devoid of blood. Some were looking like ghosts. Some sages were engaged in eating ground stones and others were eating leaves. vedavidyāvratasnātā nirāhārā mahātapāḥ | smarantaḥ sarvadā viṣṇuṁ tadbhaktāstatparāyaṇāḥ ||3-77- 4 The sages were engaged in the study of veda after bathing. Some were engaged in great penance without food. Some were always engaged in remembering viṣṇu and His devotees. āsannamuktayaḥ kechitkechiddhyānaikatatparāḥ | dhyānena manasā viṣṇuṁ dṛṣṭavantastapodhanāḥ ||3-77-5 Some were about reach deliverance. Some were engaged in meditation. The sages with the wealth of penance had seen viṣṇu in their minds by meditation. saṁvatsarāśinaḥ kechtitkechijjalavicāriṇaḥ | śakrasya bhayadātāraḥ śrutismṛtiparāyanāḥ ||3-77-6 Some sages were eating only once in an year. Some were living in water consuming water. Some were capable of giving fear to śakra. Some were engaged in the study of the oral sacred knowledge (shruti) and sacred traditions (smṛti). vasiṣṭo vāmadevaścha raibhyo dhūmrastathaiva ca | jābāliḥ kāśyapaḥ kaṇvo bharadvājo'tha gautamaḥ ||3-77-7 vasiṣṭa, vāmadeva, raibhya, dhūmra as well as jābāli, kāśyapa, kaṇva, bharadvāja and gautama, atriraśvaśirā bhadraḥ śaṅkhaḥ śaṅkhanidhiḥ kuṇiḥ | pārāśaryaḥ pavitrākṣo yājṣavalkyo mahāmanāḥ ||3-77-8 atri, ashvashira, bhadra, śaṅkha, śaṅkhanidhi, kuṇi, pārāśarya (vyāsa), pavitrākṣa and the great soul yājṣavalkya, kakṣīvānaṅgirāścaiva munirdīptatapāstathā | asito devalastāta vālmīkiścha mahātapāḥ ||3-77-9 kakṣivān, aṅgiraā as well as the sage dīptatapa and also asita, devala and the great sage vālmiki ete cānye ca munayo draṣṭumīśvaramavyayam | ādāyārghyaṁ yathāyogamuṭajātsvātsamāyayuḥ ||3-77-10 - These sages as well as other sages left their hermitages, carrying suitable offerings as required, desiring to see the Lord having no decline (kṛṣṇa, viṣṇu). te ca gatvā hariṁ kṛṣṇaṁ viṣṇumīśaṁ janārdanam | bhaktinamrāstadā devaṁ praṇemurbhaktavatsalam ||3-77-11 They, with their heads bowing down with devotion, went ahead and bowed to the Lord, hari, kṛṣṇa, viṣṇu, the lord who excites men, who is affectionate to his devotees. namo'stu kṛṣṇa kṛṣṇeti devadeveti keshavam | praṇavātmaṣjagannātha natāḥ sma śirasā hare ||3-77-12 kṛṣṇa, we bow to you. kṛṣṇa! kṛṣṇa! O Lord of the deva-s! keshava! O the soul of praṇava (Om)! Lord of the universe! O hari! We bow to you with our head. kṛṣṇa viṣṇo hṛṣīkeśa keshaveti ca sarvadā | praṇāmapravaṇā viprāḥ prāhuritthaṁ jagatpatim ||3-77-13 Saying always kṛṣṇa! viṣṇu! Lord of the senses! O keshava! the sages, the best among those who bow, bowed to the Lord of the universe. idamarghyamidam pādyamidaṁ viṣṭarameva ca | kṛtārthāḥ sarvadā deva prasanno no jagatpatiḥ ||3-77-14 Here are the offerings, here are the drinkables, here is the seat. We feel that we have done always what is to be done. O Lord! We hope that you, the Lord of the world is pleased. kiṁ kurmaḥ kiṁ nu naḥ kṛtyaṁ kaśchidroṣaḥ prabho hare | iti prāṣjalayaḥ sarve prāhurdevasya paśyataḥ ||3-77-15 What shall we do to serve you? What is to be done by us? O lord! O hari! Have we done anything wrong? All of them said with folded hands as watched by the Lord. kṛṣṇo'pi tadyathāyogamupayujya sahāmaraiḥ | kṛtaṁ sarvaṁ munivarā vardhatāṁ tapa uttamam ||3-77-16 kṛṣṇa along with the deva-s accepted the offerings and said: O the best among sages! You have welcomed us suitably. Let the best penances progress. iti bruvanpurāṇātmā prītastena garutmatā | āsanaṁ lambhayāmāsa rātrau devo janārdanaḥ ||3-77-17 Saying thus and becoming pleased, the ancient soul (viṣṇu), the lord who excites people, along with garuḍa, took his seat in the night. kuśalaṁ pṛṣṭavānbhhūyā munīnāṁ bhāvitātmanām | agnihotreṣu tapasi tathā bhṛtyeṣu sarvataḥ ||3-77-18 Again the lord enquired about the well being of the sages, having purified souls, in the sacrificial rituals, penances as well as their servants and all other matters. evamādi jagannāthaḥ pṛṣṭavānīśvarastadā | sarvatra kuśalaṁ te'tra brūyuḥ kṛṣṇasya sarvataḥ ||3-77-19 Thus the lord, the Lord of the world, then enquired about everything. Then all of them told kṛṣṇa said that all is well. ātitthyaṁ cakrire te tu nīvāraiḥ phalamūlakaiḥ | devānāmatha sarveṣāṁ viṣṇoḥ kṛṣṇasya yatnataḥ | The sages offered hospitality with nīvari and the fruits and roots to all the deva-s and viṣṇu-kṛṣṇa taking efforts. ātithyamupayuṣjānastataḥ prīto'bhavaddhariḥ ||3-77-20 Accepting their hospitality, lord hari (kṛṣṇa, viṣṇu) was pleased. iti śrīmahābhārate khileṣu harivaṁṣe bhaviṣyaparvaṇi kailāsayātrāyāṁ saptasaptatitamo'dhyāyaḥ This is the seventy-seventh chapter of bhaviṣyaparva, harivaṁśa, khila of mahabhārata, in kalāsayātra, kṛṣṇa welcomed at badarika Ashram · 3-77-1 tata iti || · 3-77-6 jalavicāriṇaḥ jalavāsaparāḥ jalamātrāhārā vā || iti śrīmahābhārate khileṣu harivaṁśe bhaviṣyaparvaṇi ṭīkāyāṁ saptasaptatitamo'dhyāyaḥ || 77 ||
