vaiśampāyana uvāca
tataḥ sa bhagavānviṣṇuḥ piśācau māṁsabhakṣakau |
dadarśātha mahāghorau dīpikādhāriṇau hariḥ ||3-80-1
Translation
vaiśampāyana said:
(O janamejaya!) Then, lord viṣṇu, hari (kṛṣṇa) saw, the flesh eating, highly terrible piśāca-s, holding torches.
vilokayāṁcakratustau piśācau devakīsutam |
sthitaṁ sukhāsane viṣnuṁ dṛṣṭvā lokeshvareshvaram ||3-80-2
Then, those two piśāca-s also saw the son of devakī, viṣṇu, the Lord of the gods of the world (kṛṣṇa), comfortably seated.
tau ca gatvā samuddeśaṁ piśācau keshavasya ha |
tatastāvūcaturviṣṇumantarīkṛtya keshavam ||3-80-3
The two piśāca-s went to the place where keshava (kṛṣṇa) was seated and spoke to (asked) viṣṇu (kṛṣṇa), considering keshava (viṣṇu, kṛṣṇa) as some other person.
ko bhavān kasya vā martyaḥ kutaścāgamyate tvayā |
kimarthamiha saṁprāpto vane ghore mṛgākule ||3-80-4
Who are you? Whose man are you? Where are you coming from? Why did you come to this forest, full of terrible animals?
nirmanuṣye dvīpivṛte piśācagaṇasevite |
śvāpadaiḥ sevyamāne ca vipine vyāghrasaṅkule ||3-80-5
This forest, devoid of men and covered with tigers, is served by groups of terrible demons. This forest is served by wolves and full of groups of tigers.
sukumāro'navadyāṅgaḥ sākṣādviṣṇurivāparaḥ |
padmapatrekṣaṇaḥ śyāmaḥ padmābhaḥ śrīpatiḥ svayam ||3-80-6
You are delicate with faultless limbs, looking like another real viṣṇu with eyes beautiful as the lotus flower, having dark blue colour like a lotus flower. You look like the husband of śrī, himself.
asmatprītikaraḥ sākṣātprāpto viṣṇurivāparaḥ |
devo vā yadi va yakṣo gandharvaḥ kinnaro'pi vā ||3-80-7
You look like another viṣṇu, whom we shall be pleased to reach. Are you a god or a yakṣa or gandharva or a kinnara (quasi human)?
indro vā dhanado vāpi yamo'tha varuṇo'pi vā |
ekākī vipine ghore dhyānārpitamanā iva ||3-80-8
Are you indra or the lord of wealth (kubera), yama or varuṇa, seated in this terrible forest, alone, with your mind fixed in meditation?
brūhi martya yathātattvaṁ jṣātumicchāmi mānada |
Speak up man! We want to know your details, O the one who respects others!
evaṁ pṛṣṭaḥ piśācābhyāmāha viṣṇururukramaḥ ||3-80-9
(vaiśampāyana continued: O janamejata!) viṣṇu (kṛṣṇa), the one who took long strides (as vāmana to measure the three worlds) who was asked thus by the piśāca-s, said:
kṣatriyo'smīti māmāhurmanuṣyāḥ prakṛtisthitāḥ |
yaduvaṁśe samutpannaḥ kṣātraṁ vṛttamanuṣṭhitāḥ ||3-80-10
(kṛṣṇa said): Men, who are in their natural state, say that I am a kṣatriya. I was born in the race of yadu. I observe the duties of a kṣatriya.
lokānāmatha pātāsmi śāstā duṣṭasya sarvadā |
kailāsaṁ gantukāmo'smi draṣṭuṁ devamumāpatiṁ ||3-80-11
The worlds are protected by me. I always punish the wicked. I am going to kailāsa to see the lord (shiva) the husband of umā.
ityevaṁ mama vṛttāntaḥ kathyatāṁ kau yuvāmiti |
yuvāmiha samāyātau kimarthaṁ brāhmaṇāśramam ||3-80-12
These are my details. Tell me who you are Why have both of you come to this hermitage of brahmins?
eṣā hi mahatī puṇyā nānāvipraniṣevitā |
badarīyaṁ samākhyātā na kṣudrairāśritā kvachit ||3-80-13
This is a great sacred place, served by many brahmins, famous by the name badarī, which never support the mean and wicked ever.
tapasvibhistapoyuktairjuṣṭā siddhaniṣevitā |
śvagaṇā nātra dṛśyante piśācā māṁsabjojanāḥ ||3-80-14
This place is served by those who are engaged in penance, those who are with penance, and those who have accomplished the skills. Groups of dogs and flesh eating piśāca-s are not seen here.
na hantavyā mṛgāścātra mṛgayā nātra vartate |
na tu kṣudraiḥ praveṣṭavyā na kṛtaghnairna nāstikaiḥ ||3-80-15
Here animals are not to be killed. No hunting can be done here. Here the mean and wicked, the ungrateful and the nonbelievers can not enter.
ahamasya tu deshasya rakṣitā nātra saṁśayaḥ |
vyatikramo yadi bhavettasya śāstāsmi yatnataḥ ||3-80-16
I am the protector of this place. There is no doubt in this. I will definitely punish those if any deviation takes place.
kau bhavantau kva nu yuvāṁ kasyeyaṁ mahatī chamūḥ |
nātaḥ paraṁ praveṣṭavyamṛṣayastvatra saṁsthitāḥ ||3-80-17
Who are you? Where are you from? Whose is this huge army? You shall not proceed further. Sages are living there.
vighnastatra pravarteta tapaḥsu ca tapasvinām |
ihaiva sthīyatāṁ tāvadvaktavyaṁ ca tataḥ sukham ||3-80-18
That may cause obstacle in the penance of those engaged in penance. You shall stay here and answer me comfortably.
anyathāhaṁ niṣeddhā syāṁ balādvākyaistathaiva ca |
Otherwise I shall stop you with my power as well as with words.
vaiśampāyana uvāca
evaṁ priṣṭau piśācau tu vaktumevopacakratuḥ ||3-80-19
vaiśampāyana said:
(O janamejaya!) The flesh eating piśāca-s who were told thus (by kṛṣṇa) began to speak.
tayoreko mahāghoraḥ piśāco dīrghabāhukaḥ |
uvāca vacanaṁ tatra yathā hṛdi samarpitam ||3-80-20
One among the highly terrible piśāca-s, having long arms, spoke the following words there, as these were from his heart:
piśāca uvāca
śrūyatāmabhidhāsyāmi samāhitamanā bhava |
namaskṛtya jagannāthaṁ hariṁ kṛṣṇaṁ jagatpatim ||3-80-21
piśāca said:
Listen! I shall speak. Be one having a composed mind (be ready to listen). I shall speak bowing to the Lord of the universe, hari, kṛṣṇa, the Lord of the universe,
Adidevamajam viṣṇuṁ vareṇyamanaghaṁ shuchim |
vakṣyāmi sakalaṁ yadvattayā śṛṇu yadīcchasi ||3-80-22
viṣṇu, the ancient Lord, the lord who is unborn, the lord who is most respected, the pure lord having no fault, I shall speak everything. You may hear if you wish.
ghaṇṭākarṇo'smi nāmnāhaṁ piśāco ghoradarśanaḥ |
māṁsādo vikṛto ghoraḥ sākṣānmṛtyurivāparaḥ ||3-80-23
I am the piśāca named ghaṇṭākarṇa, terrible to see. I eat flesh. I am deformed and terrible like another real death.
dhanadasyānugantāhaṁ sākṣādrudrasakhasya ca |
mamāyamanujaḥ sākṣādantakasyāntako hyaham ||3-80-24
I am a servant of the lord of wealth (kubera) who is a friend of the real rudra (shiva). This is my younger brother. He is the death of the real lord of death.
mṛgayeyaṁ sumahatī viṣṇoḥ pūjārthamityuta |
mameyaṁ vartate senā śvagaṇo'pi mamaiva tu ||3-80-25
This great hunting is for worshipping viṣṇu. This army is under my control. This group of dogs is also mine.
āgato'haṁ mahāśailātkailāsādbhūtasevitāt |
ahaṁ piśācaveṣeṇa saṁviṣṭaḥ pāpakarmakṛt ||3-80-26
I am coming from the great mountain kailāsa served by ghosts (shiva's servants). I have the form of a piśāca who perform sinful deeds.
satataṁ dūṣayanviṣṇuṁ ghaṇṭāmābadhya karṇayoḥ |
mama na praviśennāma viṣṇoriti vicintayan ||3-80-27
I have been hating viṣṇu always by hanging bells (=ghaṇṭa) on my ears (= karṇa), thinking that the name of viṣṇu shall not enter my ears.
ahaṁ kailāsanilayamāsādya vṛṣabadhvajam |
ārādhya taṁ mahādevamastuvam satataṁ shivam ||3-80-28
Entering the mountain kailāsa, I met the lord having bull as his flag (shiva). Then I always worshipped and praised the great deva, shiva.
tataḥ prasanno māmāha vṛṇīśveti varaṁ haraḥ |
tato muktirmayā tatra prārthitā devasannidhau ||3-80-29
Then hara (shiva) was pleased with me and he asked me to accept a boon. Then I prayed for liberation in presence of the great lord, shiva.
muktiṁ prārthayamānaṁ māṁ punarāha trilocanaḥ |
muktipradātā sarveṣāṁ viṣṇureva na saṁśayaḥ ||3-80-30
The lord with three eyes, shiva, told me who prayed for liberation: viṣṇu is the only one who provides liberation for one and all. There is no doubt.
tasmādgatvā ca badarīṁ tatrārādhya janārdanam |
muktim prāpnuhi govindānnaranārāyaṇāśrame ||3-80-31
Hence you go to badarī, to the hermitage of nara and nārāyaṇa and worshipping the one who excites men (viṣṇu), obtain liberation from govinda (kṛṣṇa, viṣṇu) there.
ityukto devadevena śūlinā jṣātavānaham |
tameva paramaṁ matvā govindaṁ garuḍadvajam ||3-80-32
When the lord of lords, the one who holds the trident (shiva) told me thus, I realized the knowledge that, govinda, the one having garuḍa on his flag (viṣṇu), is considered as the most superior.
tasmātprārthayamānaḥ sanmuktideśamamuṁ gataḥ |
Hence I arrived here (in badarī) to pray to him (viṣṇu) for liberation.
anyaccha śṛṇu me kāryaṁ yadi kautūhalaṁ tava ||3-80-33
I have another subject also to speak. Hear if you are curious.
purī dvāravatī nāma paśchimasyodadhestaṭe |
yaduvṛṣṇisamākīrṇāṁ sāgarormisamākulām ||3-80-34
There is a city named city of doors (dvāravatī) along the west coast of the ocean, full of those belonging to the races of yadu and vṛṣṇi along with the waves of ocean.
adhyāste sa harirviṣṇustāṁ purīṁ puruṣottamaḥ |
hari, viṣṇu (kṛṣṇa), the best among puruṣa-s, lives in that city.
draṣṭuṁ lokahitārthāya vasantaṁ dvārakāpure ||3-80-35
nirgataḥ sāṁprataṁ martya vayametaiḥ sahānugaiḥ |
O human being! We, along with our followers, are going there, to the city of doors (dvāraka), to see the lord, who lives there for the welfare of the world.
viṣṇuḥ sarveśvaraḥ sākṣāddraṣṭavyo'smābhiradya vai ||3-80-36
viṣṇu, the real Lord of all, is the one we wish to see now.
lokānāṁ prabhavaḥ pātā kartā hartā jagatpatiḥ |
ādiḥ sa hi samastasya prabhavaḥ kāraṇaṁ hariḥ ||3-80-37
The Lord of the universe is the creator of the worlds, the protector, the doer and the destroyer. He is the original source of all. The lord hari is the cause for all.
kartā samastasya hariḥ purātanaḥ
prabhuḥ prabhūṇāmapi yaḥ sadātmakaḥ |
tamādidevaṁ varadaṁ vareṇyaṁ
draṣṭuṁ hariṁ saṁprati saṁyatāḥ smaḥ ||3-80-38
The ancient Lord, hari is the creator of all. Lord viṣṇu is the soul of all lords. He is the principal, foremost lord, the one who gives boons and the most respected one. We are trying to see hari, viṣṇu.
yasya prasādājjagadevamāsī-
tsaprāṇigandharvamahoragaugham |
devaṁ jagadyonimajaṁ janārdanaṁ
draṣṭuṁ hariṁ saṁprati saṁyatāḥ smaḥ ||3-80-39
We are trying to see the lord hari, (viṣṇu, kṛṣṇa) the unborn, the origin of the universe, the one who excites men, with whose pleasure the universe was created thus, along with the groups of beings, gandharva-s and great snakes.
yasyodayādviśvamidaṁ prabhūtaṁ
layaṁ ca tasminsamupaiti kalpe |
tasyaiva sākṣādvaśavarti viśvam
drakṣyāma devaṁ puruṣottamaṁ harim ||3-80-40
We shall see the lord, the best among puruṣa-s, hari (viṣṇu, kṛṣṇa), with whose appearance the world was born, in whom all the world will enter in the end, under whose control, the world remains.
sraṣṭā ca yo'sau sakalasya devaḥ
pātā ca hartā ca hariḥ sa eva |
drakṣyāma nityaṁ bhuvaneśvaraṁ hariṁ
purāṇamādyaṁ prabhaviṣṇumavyayam ||3-80-41
The lord, viṣṇu, is the creator of all. hari, himself is the protector as well as the destroyer of all. We wish to see always, hari, the Lord of the world, the ancient, the principal lord, the splendorous viṣṇu, who does not have decline.
ajasya kartā bhuvanasya goptā
bhuvashcha kartā harireka eva |
taṁ yogino yogaviśuddhabuddhiṁ
labhema tenaiva matiḥ samākulā ||3-80-42
The lord is the creator of the one who is unborn (brahma) and the one who conceals the world (in him). Only hari (viṣṇu, kṛṣṇa) is the only creator of the earth. Only when those yoked in yoga realize the lord whose soul is purified by yoga, their intelligence become complete.
nigīrya viśvaṁ sakalaṁ jagatpatiḥ
shete śiśutvaṁ samavāpya sākṣāt |
vaṭasya patre jagatāṁ nivāsaḥ
pādau ca vikṣipya karau vidhunvan ||3-80-43
Swallowing the entire world, the lord of the universe, is lying down as a child. The Lord who lives in this universe, is playing as a child, lying on a leaf of the banyan tree (Ficus Indica) throwing his arms and shaking his legs.
yasyodare devamuniḥ purātano
dadarsha lokānakhilānsa māyayā |
pravishya viśvaṁ sakalaṁ yathāva-
dbahiryathā bhūtamabhūdidaṁ mahat ||3-80-44
In his belly, the ancient deva sage (mārkaṇḍeya) saw the entire world by illusion. Entering the lords's belly, the sage saw all the great worlds, as the worlds were existing outside.
nigīrya viśvaṁ jagadādikāle
shete mahātmā jaladherjalaughe |
devyā śriyā cāmaralolahastayā
niṣevyamāṇaḥ puruṣottamastadā ||3-80-45
Swallowing the entire world at the time of the creation of the universe, the great soul lies in the large body of water. Then the goddess śrī serves the lord, the best among puruṣa-s by fanning him with a soft chowrie.
nābhaścha yasyāvirabhūtsapatraṁ
padmaṁ mahatkāṣchanasaprabhaṁ prabhoḥ |
janmāspadaṁ lokaguroryadāsī-
dvistāri padmaṁ jagadādisṛṣṭau ||3-80-46
From the navel of the lord, a great, splendorous, golden lotus was born along with leaves. That blooming lotus is the place of birth of the preceptor of the world as well as the source of the creation of the universe.
dadhāra yo bhūtapatirmahānmahīṁ
daṁṣṭrāgrasaṁsthāpitarūḍhamūlām |
nadanmahāmegha ivādikāle
kurvanvarāho munigītamūrtiḥ ||3-80-47
The great Lord of the beings carried the earth along with its base and roots, placing it on the tip of his fang. He roared like a great cloud long ago, becoming the manifestation of the great boar, praised by the hymns sung by sages.
hariḥ purāṇaḥ puruṣottamaḥ prabhuḥ
kartā samastasya samastasākṣī |
yajṣātmako yajṣapatirjagatpati-
rdraṣṭuṁ tamīśaṁ vayamudyatāḥ smaḥ ||3-80-48
We are trying to see the Lord hari (viṣṇu, kṛṣṇa), the ancient one, the best among puruṣa-s, the lord, the creator of all, the witness of all, the soul of sacrifice, the lord of the sacrifice , the lord of the universe.
kechidbahutvena vadanti deva-
mekātmanā kechidimaṁ purāṇam |
vedāntasaṁsthāpitasattvayuktaṁ
draṣṭuṁ tamīśaṁ vayamudyatāḥ smaḥ ||3-80-49
Some speak about the Lord in many manners. Others say that the ancient lord is the only soul. We are trying to see the lord who is yoked with the principles established by the vedānta.
anekameke bahudhā vadanti
śrutismṛtinyāyaniviṣṭachittāḥ |
āhuryamātmānamajaṁ purāvido
draṣṭuṁ tamīśaṁ vayamudyatāḥ smaḥ ||3-80-50
Those having their minds fixed in the principles of ancient knowledge say that the Lord is one as well as many. Those who know the past say that the Lord is the soul, the unborn. We are trying to see that Lord.
yaṁ prahurīḍyaṁ varadaṁ varenya-
mekāntatattvaṁ munayaḥ purātanāḥ |
yaṁ sarvagaṁ devamajaṁ janārdanaṁ
draṣṭuṁ hariṁ saṁprati saṁyatāḥ smaḥ ||3-80-51
The ancient sages say that the Lord is the only one who is praiseworthy. The Lord is the provider of boons. The Lord is the one to be respected, the one and only principle. The Lord is all-pervading, unborn, the one who excites men. We are trying to see that Lord.
yasminviśvamidaṁ protamādikāle jagatpitā |
taṁ draṣṭumabhisaṁvṛttāḥ kiṁ nu vakṣyāma sāṁpratam ||3-80-52
We wish to see that Lord who pervades the world, the father of the universe on whom the world depends from the beginning. What else to say now.
gachcāmo vayamanyatra gaccha tvaṁ kāmamanyataḥ |
niyamo'pyasti no martya yatheṣṭaṁ gaccha sāmpratam ||3-80-53
We are going to some other place. You may go to some other place as you like. O human being! We have our own routine. You may go as you like.
rātrimadhyamanuprāptaṁ nātra kāryā vicāraṇā |
Now the midnight has come. There is nothing else to be thought of.
ityuktvā ghorarūpo'sau piśāco vikṛtānanaḥ ||3-80-54
tasminneva same deshe pītvā ca rudhiraṁ bahu |
bhakṣayitvā yathākāmaṁ māṁsarāśiṁ vichakṣaṇaḥ ||3-80-55
(vaiśampāyana continued: O janamejaya!) Saying this, the piśāca having a terrible form and deformed face, drank a lot of blood and ate a lot of meat as he liked, on the level ground there.
apaḥ saṁspṛśya tatraiva pārśve saṁsthāpya sādhanam |
antrapāśaṁ mahāghoraṁ saṁsthāpya vipulaṁ mahat ||3-80-56
Then the radiant one touched water ritually and placed the items for meditation nearby and wore a vast, highly terrible garland of intestines.
āsanaṁ kuśasaṁyuktaṁ kṛtvā cābhyukṣya vāriṇā |
utsārya śvagaṇānsarvānyatnena mahatā tadā ||3-80-57
He made a seat of kusha grass and sprinkled water on the same. Then he drove away all the groups of dogs with great effort.
sukhāsanaṁ samāsthāya samadhau yatate śvapaḥ |
Sitting on the comfortable seat, the keeper of dogs (piśāca - ghaṇṭākarṇa) tried to meditate.
ekachittastadā bhūtvā namaskṛtya ca keshavam |
imaṁ mantraṁ paṭhanghoraḥ piśāco bhaktavatsalam ||3-80-58
Concentrating his mind and bowing to keshava (kṛṣṇa, viṣṇu), affectionate to the devotees, the terrible piśāca, recited this mantra:
namo bhagavate tasmai vāsudevāya cakriṇe |
namaste gadine tubhyaṁ vāsudevāya dhīmate ||3-80-59
I bow to the Lord vāsudeva (kṛṣṇa, viṣṇu), the one who resides in the inside of all, the one who holds the cakra. I bow to lord vāsudeva (kṛṣṇa, viṣṇu), the one who holds the mace, the one with intellect.
oṁ namo nārāyaṇāya viṣṇave prabhaviṣṇave |
mama bhūyānmanaḥśuddhiḥ kīrtanāttava keshava ||3-80-60
āuṁ! I bow to nārāyaṇa, viṣṇu, the splendorous viṣṇu. O keshava (kṛṣṇa, viṣṇu)! Let my mind be purified by praising you.
janmedamīdṛśaṁ ghoraṁ mā bhūnmama durāsadam |
devadūto bhaviṣyāmi smaraṇāttava gopate ||3-80-61
Now let me not have a terrible, sorrowful birth like this again. O the Lord of senses! Let me become the messenger of gods by remembering you.
tava cakraprahāreṇa kāyo nashyatu māmakaḥ |
mama bhūyo bhāvo mā bhūdeṣā me prārthanā vibho ||3-80-62
Let my body be destroyed by the striking of your cakra and thus let me not have any connection with the worldly existence. O lord! This is my prayer.
arthināṁ kalpavṛkṣo'si dātā sarvasya sarvadā |
You are the wonderful tree which provides all wishes for those who seek. You always provide everything for all.
yatra yatra bhavejjanma tatra tatra bhavānhṛdi ||3-80-63
vartatāṁ mama devesha prārthanaiṣā mamāparā |
O the Lord of gods! Wherever I am born, you shall always reside in my heart. This is my other prayer.
namastubhyaṁ namastubhyaṁ bhavatvevaṁ sadā mama ||3-80-64
nirvighnā prārthanā deva namaste'stu sadā mama |
O lord! I bow to you, I bow to you. Let my prayer to you be always like this without any obstacles. Lord! I bow to you always.
yadā me maraṇaṁ bhūyāttada mā bhūtsmṛtibhramaḥ ||3-80-65
As the time of my death comes, then there shall not be any confusion in my memory.
dine dine kṣaṇaṁ chittaṁ tvayi saṁsthaṁ bhaviṣyati |
evaṁ preraya māṁ deva mā bhūtte chittamīdṛśaṁ ||3-80-66
nṛśaṁso'yaṁ piśāco'yaṁ dayāsminkā bhavediti |
Day by day and moment by moment, let my mind be fixed on you. O lord! Please prompt me always like this. Let your mind never think this way: He is cruel. He is a piśāca. What kindness can be shown to him?
evaṁ cintaya māṁ deva bhṛtyo mahyamiti prabho ||3-80-67
O lord! Please think about me: He is my servant.
parapīḍā na matto'stu namaste bhagavanprabho |
indriyāṇīndriyārtheṣu mā bhūvansāṁprataṁ hi me ||3-80-68
O lord! I bow to you. Be kind on me so that, always, I do not harm others and my senses do not engage in the subjects of senses.
antakāle mamāpyevaṁ prasādāttava keshava |
pṛthivī yātu me ghrāṇaṁ rasanāṁ yātu me payaḥ ||3-80-69
O keshava (kṛṣṇa, viṣṇu)! At the time of death, due to your pleasure , let my state be like this: Let my sense of smell be taken by the earth. Let water take my sense of taste.
sūryaścha yātu me cakṣuḥ sparśaṁ yātu ca mārutaḥ |
śrotramākāśamapyetu manaḥ prāṇaṁ ca gacchatu ||3-80-70
Let the sun take my eyes (vision). Let the wind take my sense of touch. Let my ears (hearing) be the atmosphere and mind be taken up by the life force.
jalaṁ māṁ rakṣatāṁ nityaṁ pṛthivī rakṣatāṁ hare |
suryo māṁ rakṣatāṁ viṣṇo namaste sūryatejase ||3-80-71
Let water protect me always. O lord hari (kṛṣṇa,viṣṇu)! Let the earth protect me always. Let the sun protect me. O viṣṇu! I bow to you, having the splendor of the sun.
vāyurmāṁ rakṣatāṁ duḥkhādākāśaṁ ca janārdana|
na manaḥ sarvagaṁ deva rakṣatāṁ viṣayāntare ||3-80-72
O the one who excites men (viṣṇu, kṛṣṇa)! Let the wind and the atmosphere protect me from sorrow. O lord! Let my mind engage in the thought of the all pervading supreme soul. May it not protect the subjects and differentiation (Let it not be engaged in subjects and differentiation) (See nīlakaṇṭha commentary).
mano viparyaye ghore puruṣānhanti nityaśaḥ |
pāpeṣu yojayetpuṁsaḥ parapīḍātmakeṣu ca ||3-80-73
The perverted mind becomes terrible and always kills the men and yokes them in sins and torments others and self.
manastadrakṣatāṁ deva bhūyo bhūyo janārdana |
mā bhūnmanasi kāluśyaṁ mano me nirmalaṁ bhavet ||3-80-74
O lord! Protect that mind, again and again, O the one who excites men. Let there not be any foulness in my mind. Let my mind become pure.
kaluśaṁ tasya yacchittaṁ narake pātayatyamum |
bāhyāni nirmalānyevamindriyāni bhavantyuta ||3-80-75
na tāni kāryavantīha manaśchetkaluśaṁ bhavet |
Having foulness in their minds, makes them fall to the hell. When the mind becomes pure, the other sensory organs also become pure. Those having foul minds will not be able to do any good work.
nāṅgāni muṣṭināmedhyaṁ gṛhītvā yo vyavasthitaḥ ||3-8-76
bahiḥ prakṣālanaṁ kurvankiṁ bhavettasya keshava |
O keshava! If one washes the outside of all his limbs and stands holding excrement in his fist, what is the use?
vyartho hi kevalaṁ tasya pragraho bāhyagocharaḥ ||3-80-77
His desire to be clean from outside is definitely in vain.
tasmātsarvaprayatnena chittaṁ rakṣa janārdana |
balavānindriyagrāmo vārayainaṁ janārdana ||3-80-78
Hence, O the one who excite men (kṛṣṇa, viṣṇu) Protect my mind with all your efforts. O the one who excite men (kṛṣṇa, viṣṇu)! The sensory organs are powerful. Please stop them.
parīvādājjagannātha vācaṁ rakṣa durudvahām |
paradravyānmano rakṣa paradārājjanārdana |
O the lord of the universe! Protect my words, which are difficult to lead, from despising others. O the one who excites men! Protect my mind from the desire for other's wealth as well as other's wives.
sarvatra me dayā bhūyātprasādāttava keshava ||3-80-79
tvayyeva bhaktirachalā bhūyādbhūteṣu me dayā |
O keshava (kṛṣṇa, viṣṇu)! Due to your pleasure, let me have kindness everywhere, unmoving devotion in you and kindness to all beings.
bahunātra kimuktena śṛṇuśvedaṁ vacho mama ||3-80-80
Why should I say many things on this subject? Hear my words as thus:
sukhe duḥkhe ca rāge ca bojane gamane tathā |
jāgratsvapneṣu sarvatra tvayyeva ramatāṁ manaḥ ||3-80-81
māmakaṁ devadevesha namaste'stu janārdana |
O lord of gods! In happiness, sorrow, passion as well as eating and moving as also in waking and dream, everywhere, let my mind be happy in you. O the one who excites men! I bow to you.
iti bruvanghoratamo jātyā hīno na chittataḥ ||3-80-82
piśāco bhagavadbhaktaḥ samādhiṁ samapadyata |
(vaiśampāyana continued: O janamejaya!) Saying this, the most terrible piśāca, inferior by birth but not by mind, the devotee of the lord, was engaged in meditation.
dṛḍhaṁ baddhvātmanaḥ kāyamāntrapāśena māṁsapaḥ ||3-80-83
nishchalenaiva manasā sukhamāste sma saṁyataḥ |
Tying up his soul strongly and tying his body by the garland of intestines, with his mind not moving (fixed), the piśāca sat comfortably, controlling his senses.
dhyāyanhariṁ jagadyoniṁ viṣṇuṁ pītāmbaraṁ śivaṁ ||3-80-84
mukundamādipuruṣamekākāramanāmayam |
nityaṁ śuddhaṁ jṣānagamyaṁ kāraṇaṁ sarvadehinām ||3-80-85
He meditated on hari, the source of the universe, viṣṇu, the one who wears yellow clothes, the auspicious lord, mukunda, the first puruṣa, having a single form, the one who is free from diseases, the eternal one, the pure one, the one who can be reached with knowledge, the cause for all beings with bodies.
nāsikāgraṁ samālokya paṭhanbrahma sanātanam |
nirvātastho yathā dīpaḥ proccaranpraṇataḥ sadā ||3-80-86
Looking at the tip of his nose, chanting the eternal brahma (auṁ), like a still flame at a place devoid of wind, he continuously chanted and bowed.
praṇavaṁ vācakaṁ matvā vācyaṁ brahmeti niśchitaḥ |
ekāgraṁ satataṁ kṛtvā chittaṁ viṣṇau samarpitam ||3-80-87
Deciding that the word of praṇava (auṁ) is brahma in word form, always focusing and dedicating the mind on viṣṇu,
vikalparahitaṁ chittaṁ hṛdi madhye nyaveshayat |
puṇḍarīke śubhadale samāveśya jagatpatim ||3-80-88
establishing his mind devoid of diversion in the middle of his heart, establishing the Lord of the universe in the auspicious petals of the lotus (of his heart),
Aste sukhaṁ mahāyogī piśitāśastadā mahān |
tridhāmānaṁ japaṁstatra smaranviṣṇuṁ sanātanam ||3-80-89
the great yogi, the great flesh eater, sat comfortably in meditation, chanting and thinking about the eternal viṣṇu, who is manifested in three forms - brahma, viṣṇu and shiva.
iti śrīmābhārate khileṣu harivaṁśe bhaviṣyaparvaṇi kailāsayātrāyāṁ ghaṇṭākarṇachittasamādhau aśītitamo'dhyāyaḥ
This is the eightieth chapter of bhaviṣyaparva, harivaṁśa, khila of mahabhārata, in kailāsayātra, ghaṇṭākarṇa and kṛṣṇa meet, ghaṇṭākarṇa enters meditation
