vaiśampāyana uvāca
tataḥ sa bhagavānviṣṇuḥ piśācaṁ dṛṣṭavāṁstadā |
cintayantaṁ svamātmānaṁ shuddhibuddhisamanvitam ||3-81-1
Translation
vaiśampāyana said:
(O janamejaya!) Then the Lord hari, viṣṇu (kṛṣṇa) saw the piśāca, meditating on his own (the lord's) soul, along with a pure intellect.
ātmanyavasthitaṁ sākṣātpaṭhantaṁ praṇavaṁ sakṛt |
prārthayantaṁ svamātmānamekānte niyataṁ hariḥ ||3-81-2
The pishacha was fixed in the real soul, reciting praṇava simultaneously and praying to his own (the lord's) soul in solitude and restrained.
acintayajjagannāthaḥ kāraṇaṁ punyasaṣchaye |
dhyātvā tu suciraṁ viṣṇuḥ kāraṇaṁ puṇyakarmaṇaḥ ||3-81-3
The Lord of the universe (kṛṣṇa, viṣṇu) thought about his accumulated merit. Lord viṣṇu meditated for some time about the reason for the meritorious acts (done by the piśāca).
dhanadasyopadeshena paṭhansubahuśaḥ kṣitau |
vāsudeveti kṛṣṇeti mādhaveti ca māṁ sadā ||3-81-4
By the advise of the lord of wealth, on the earth, the piśāca always recited my names such as vāsudeva, kṛṣṇa, mādhava,
janārdana hare viṣṇo bhūtabhāvanabhāvana |
narākāra jagannātha nārāyaṇa parāyaṇa ||3-81-5
janārdana, hari, viṣṇu, the one who causes the welfare of living beings, creator, the one who is in the form of man, lord of the universe, nārāyaṇa, the final refuge.
iti māṁ nāmabhirnityaṁ paṭhatyeva divāniśam |
svapnajjāgrāṁstathā tiṣṭhanbhuṣjangaccaṁstathā vadan ||3-81-6
Thus the terrible piśāca always used to recite my names during the day and night, during dreaming, waking as well as standing, eating, moving as also speaking,
bhakṣayanmāṁsapiṭakaṁ pibaṣcchoṇitameva vā |
bādhamānaṁ ca suciraṁ hatvā cāpi mṛgānbahūn ||3-81-7
eating the collection of meat and also drinking the blood as well as during the long time of following and killing many animals.
hanane bhojane chaiṣa jāgratsvapne tathaiva ca |
sarveṣvapi ca kāryeṣu kartāhamiti manyate ||3-81-8
During killing, eating as also waking up and dreaming as well, during all actions, he considers that I am (viṣṇu, kṛṣṇa) the one who does (all the actions).
etasya karmaṇaḥ pāka eṣa ghorasya karmaṇaḥ |
niśchityaivaṁ jagannāthaḥ prītastasya babhūva ha ||3-81-9
This is the time for ending his terrible acts. Deciding thus, the Lord of the universe (kṛṣṇa, viṣṇu) became highly pleased with the piśāca.
adarśayatsvamātmānamananyasya jagatpatiḥ |
śuddhe'ntaḥkaraṇe tasya piśācasyāpi bhūmipa ||3-81-10
O the lord of earth (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued)! Then the Lord of the universe (kṛṣṇa, viṣṇu) showed him, who was not another, his own soul (form) in the pure inner mind of the piśāca.
sa ca ghoraḥ piśāco'pi dadarśātmani keshavam |
pītakauśeyavasanaṁ padmākṣaṁ śyāmalaṁ hariṁ ||3-81-11
Then the terrible piśāca saw keshava (kṛṣṇa, viṣṇu), hari, in his own soul, wearing yellow, silk clothes, having eyes as beautiful as the lotus flower, having dark blue colour.
śaṅkhinaṁ cakriṇaṁ viṣṇuṁ sragviṇaṁ gadinaṁ vibhum |
kirīṭinaṁ kaustubhinaṁ śrīvatsāccāditorasam ||3-81-12
The Lord viṣṇu was holding the conch, cakra, garland and the mace. He was wearing a crown. He was wearing kaustubha and his chest was decorated with the auspicious mark, śrīvatsa.
nīlameghanibhaṁ kāntaṁ garuḍasthaṁ prabhaṣjanam |
caturbhujaṁ śubhagiraṁ niśchalaṁ sarvagaṁ shivam ||3-81-13
The most desirable Lord having the colour of a dark blue cloud, was mounted on garuḍa. He looked like the god of wind. He was having four arms, speaking auspicious words. The lord was still, all pervading and auspicious.
anādinidhanaṁ nityaṁ māyāvinamamāyinam |
satyayuktaṁ sadā śuddhaṁ buddhigamyaṁ sadāmalam ||3-81-14
The eternal Lord was having neither beginning nor the end. The lord of illusion was not having any illusion (the vision was real), always yoked with truth and purity. The Lord, approachable with intellect was always without any impurity.
manasyevaṁ jagannāthaṁ dṛṣṭvā viṣṇumanekadhā |
anunmīlyaiva nayane kṛtārtho'smītyamanyata ||3-81-15
Seeing the Lord of the universe, viṣṇu, in his mind many times, the piśāca, without opening his eyes, considered himself to be the one who has achieved what is to be achieved.
atha dṛṣṭo harirviṣṇuḥ sākṣātsarvatragaḥ śubhaḥ |
prasanno hi harirmahyaṁ tenāhaṁ dṛṣṭavānharim ||3-81-16
I have seen hari, viṣṇu, the real auspicious Lord who pervades everywhere. hari is definitely pleased with me. I have seen hari (viṣṇu) in my mind.
siddhaṁ me janmanaḥ kṛtyaṁ kimataḥ kṛtyamasti me |
granthayo mama nirbhinnā vaśyānyevendriyāṇi me ||3-81-17
I have achieved the purpose of my birth. There is nothing further to be done by me. My bondages (attachments) are broken. All my sensory organs are under my control.
prāyeṇa jitamityeva mano manye smṛte harau |
īśaṇā ca nirastā me prasanno'ham tathābhavam* ||3-81-18
When hari (viṣṇu) is in my memory, my mind has accomplished success. All my hastening is over. I am now pleased and satisfied.
etebhyo'pi piśācebhyo nirmuktaḥ sāṁprataṁ tathā |
yo'sau mamānujaḥ sākṣātsa ca bhaktastathā harau ||3-81-19
I have now become free from the group of piśācas. My younger brother is also a real devotee of hari (viṣṇu).
kālena caiva nirmukto viṣṇoḥ sāyujyamāpnuyāt |
With the passage of time, he will also become free. He will also get united with viṣṇu.
ityevaṁ cintayitvā sa āntrapāśaṁ vibhidya ca ||3-81-20
krameṇa prāṇānunmucya vilokya ca diśāstathā |
śarīraṁ sugamaṁ kṛtvā prāviśatsa sukhena ha ||3-81-21
Thinking thus, the piśāca broke the bindings of the garland of intestines. Gradually he released his breath and slowly he looked at all directions. He relaxed his body and came out of the meditation comfortably.
iti śrīmahābhārate khileṣu harivaṁśe bhaviṣyaparvaṇi kailāsayātrāyāṁ piśācasya viṣṇutsākṣātkāre ekāśītitamo'dhyāyaḥ
This is the eighty-first chapter of bhaviṣyaparva, harivaṁśa, khila of mahabhārata, in kalāsayātra, ghaṇṭākarṇa blessed with vision of viṣṇu
