vaiśampāyana uvāca
evaṁ bahuvidhairbhūtaiḥ piśācairuragaiḥ saha |
Agatya bhagavānrudraḥ śaṅkaro vṛśavāhanaḥ ||3-87-1
Translation
vaiśampāyana said:
(O janamejaya!) In this way, lord rudra, the auspicious lord who causes prosperity, having bull as his vehicle arrived there, accompanied by many kinds of bhūta-s, piśāca-s and serpents
dadarsha viṣṇuṁ deveśaṁ tapantaṁ tapa uttamam |
juhvānamagniṁ vidhivaddravyairmedhyairjagatpatim ||3-87-2
and saw viṣṇu (kṛṣṇa), the Lord of lords performing the best of penances, the lord of the universe, offering materials suitable for oblation, as prescribed to the sacrificial fire.
garuḍāhṛtakāṣṭhaṁ tu jaṭilaṁ cīravāsasam |
cakreṇānītakusumaṁ khaḍgāṇītakuśaṁ tathā ||3-87-3
(Lord shiva saw kṛṣṇa) who was having matted hairlocks, wearing bark, to whom the firewood (for the sacrifice) was brought by garuḍa, to whom the flowers were brought by cakra, to whom the kusha grass (Poa cynosuroides) (for the sacrifice) was brought by the sword,
gadākṛtasamācāraṁ devadevaṁ janārdanam |
indrādyairdevasaṅghaiścha vṛtaṁ munigaṇaiḥ saha ||3-87-4
(Lord shiva saw kṛṣṇa) the lord of lords, janārdana (*), to whom the service was performed by the mace. Lord kṛṣṇa was surrounded by the groups of gods led by indra, etc., along with the groups of sages.
acintyaṁ sarvabhūtānāṁ dhyāyantaṁ kimapi prabhum |
avaruhya vṛṣāccharvo bhagavānbhūtabhāvanaḥ ||3-87-5
(Seeing lord) kṛṣna who can not be understood by any of the beings, who was meditating on something, Lord shiva, who is concerned with the welfare of all beings alighted from the bull.
tataḥ prītaḥ prasannātmā lalāṭākṣa umāpatiḥ |
The lord of umā, shiva, having the third eye on his forehead, having a pleasant soul, was pleased (with the penance performed by kṛṣṇa).
tato bhūtapiśācāścha rākṣasā guhyakāstathā ||3-87-6
munayo vipravaryāścha jayaśabdaṁ pracakrire |
Then the bhūta-s, piśāca-s, rākṣasa-s and guhyaka-s as well as sages and the best brahmins chanted the words "jaya":
jaya deva jagannātha jaya rudra janārdana ||3-87-7
Victory to the god, the lord of universe, janārdana (*}(viṣṇu, kṛṣṇa). Victory to rudra (shiva),
jaya viṣṇo hṛṣīkeśa nārāyaṇa parāyaṇa |
jaya rudra purāṇātmaṣjaya deva hareshvara ||3-87-8
Victory to viṣṇu, the lord of senses, victory to nārāyaṇa, victory to the lord of last refuge, victory to rudra, the ancient soul, victory to the lord shiva.
Adideva jagannātha jaya śaṅkara bhāvana |
jaya kaustubhadīptāṅga jaya bhasmavirājita ||3-87-9
Victory to the primal lord. Victory to the lord of universe, victory to the auspicious lord, who causes prosperity, victory to the lord who manifests, victory to the lord whose limbs are brightened by the jewel kaustubha (viṣṇu ), victory to the lord who shines with ashes (shiva).
jaya cakragadāpāṇe jaya śūliṁstrilocana |
jaya mauktikadīptāṅga jaya nāgavibhūṣaṇa ||3-87-10
Victory to the lord who holds cakra and mace in his hands, victory to the lord who holds trident, victory to the lord having three eyes, victory to the lord whose limbs sparkle with pearls , victory to the lord who is decorated with serpents.
iti te munayaḥ sarve praṇāmaṁ cakrire harim |
(vaiśampāyana continued): Praising thus all the sages paid obeisance to hari (viṣṇu, kṛṣṇa).
tata utthāya bhagavāndṛṣṭvā devamavasthitam ||3-87-11
vṛṣadvajaṁ virūpākṣaṁ śaṅkaraṁ nīlalohitam |
Then lord kṛṣṇa stood up and saw the lord (shiva) standing before him, the lord having the sign of bull on his flagstaff, the lord having a different eye (the third eye), the auspicious lord causing prosperity, the lord having dark blue and red colour.
tato hṛṣṭamanā viṣṇustuṣṭāva haramīśvaram ||3-87-12
Then, with a pleased mind, viṣṇu (kṛṣṇa) pleased the lord who destroys (hara, shiva).
śrībhagavānuvāca
namaste śitikaṇṭhāya nīlagrīvāya vedhase |
namaste śochiṣe astu namaste upavāsine ||3-87-13
The auspicious lord (viṣṇu, kṛṣṇa) said:
I bow to you, the lord with dark neck (śitikaṇṭha - having the entire world in black colour in his neck - see nīlakaṇṭha commentary), the lord with blue neck , the lord of veda. I bow to you, the lord who is the brightest, the lord who abstains from food.
namaste mīḍhuṣe astu namaste gadine hara |
namaste viśvatanave vṛṣāya vṛṣarūpiṇe ||3-87-14
I bow to you mīḍhuṣa, I bow to you who holds the mace, the destroyer (shiva), I bow to the lord who has the world as his body. I bow the lord who is in the form of a bull.
amūrtāya ca devāya namaste'stu pinākine |
namaḥ kubjāya kūpāya śivāya śivarūpiṇe ||3-87-15
I bow to the lord who has no body. I bow to the lord. I bow to the lord who holds the trident. I bow to the lord having the form of a hump-back. I bow to the lord who dwells in hollows. I bow to the auspicious lord, who has the form of auspiciousness.
namastuṣṭāya tuṇḍāya namastuṭituṭāya ca |
namaḥ śivāya śāntāya giriśāya ca te namaḥ ||3-87-16
I bow to tuṣṭā (shiva), tuṇḍā (the lord who consumes all with his mouth - shiva, see nīlakaṇṭha commentary), tuṭituṭā (shiva). I bow to the auspicious lord shiva, the gentle lord (śānta). O lord of the mountain! I bow to you.
namo harāya hiprāya namo hariharāya ca |
namo'ghorāya ghorāya ghoraghorapriyāya ca ||3-87-17
I bow to the lord, the destroyer. I bow to hipra (the lord who can be attained even by the forsaken - shiva, see nīlakaṇṭha commentary). I bow to harihara (shiva). I bow to the lord aghora (shiva), the venerable lord (ghora), the lord dear to the terrible as well non-terrible.
namo'ghaṇṭāya ghaṇṭāya namo ghaṭighaṭāya ca |
namaḥ śivāya śāntāya giriśāya ca te namaḥ ||3-87-18
I bow to the lord without bells (aghaṇṭa). I bow to the lord with bells (ghaṇṭa). I bow to the lord, the creator of the creator (ghaṭighaṭa). I bow to the lord shiva, the gentle lord. O lord of the mountain! I bow to you.
namo virūparūpāya purāya purahāriṇe |
nama ādyāya bījāya śuchaye'ṣṭasvarūpiṇe ||3-87-19
I bow to the lord who takes the form of deformed. I bow to the lord who has the form of a field. I bow to the lord, the destroyer of the three cities (tripura). I bow to the lord, the prime source. I bow to the lord, the seed of all. I bow to the lord having eight forms.
namaḥ pinākahastāya namaḥ śūlāsidhāriṇe |
namaḥ khaṭvāṅgahastāya namaste kṛttivāsase ||3-87-20
I bow to the lord who holds the trident in his arm. I bow to the lord, who holds the spear and the sword. I bow to the lord who holds a staff with a skull at the top. I bow to the lord, wearing the skin of the elephant.
namaste devadevāya nama ākāśamūrtaye |
harāya harirūpāya namaste tigmatejase ||3-87-21
I bow to the lord of lords. I bow to the lord whose body is the sky. I bow to the lord hara, the destroyer. I bow to the lord shiva in the form of lord hari (viṣṇu). I bow to the lord having the immense splendor.
bhaktapriyāya bhaktāya bhaktānāṁ varadāyine |
namo'bhramūrtaye deva jaganmūrtidharāya ca ||3-87-22
I bow to the lord, dear to the devotees. I bow to the lord, devotee (of viṣṇu). I bow to the lord who gives boon to his devotees. I bow to the lord having the body of clouds. I bow to the lord who has the universe as the body.
namaścandrāya devāya sūryāya ca namo namaḥ |
namaḥ pradhānadevāya bhūtānāṁ pataye namaḥ ||3-87-23
I bow to the lord, the lord of moon as well as the lord of sun. I bow to the chief of lords. I bow to the lord of beings.
karālāya ca muṇḍāya vikṛtāya kapardine |
ajāya ca namastubhyaṁ bhūtabhāvanabhāvana ||3-87-24
I bow to the terrible lord. I bow to the lord having a shaven head. I bow to the lord in the form of deformed. I bow to the lord wearing matted hair locks. I bow the lord who is not born. I bow to the lord who is concerned with the welfare of all beings.
namo'stu harikeśāya piṅgalāya namo namaḥ |
namaste'bhīṣuhastāya bhīrubhīruharāya ca ||3-87-25
I bow to the lord having the hair of sunrays (Also balarāma and kṛṣṇa are the white and black hairs of lord shiva - see nīlakaṇṭha commentary). I bow to the lord having the colour of reddish brown. I bow to the lord who holds the rein in his hand. I bow to the terrible lord. I bow to the lord, the destroyer of fear.
harāya bhītirūpāya ghorāṇāṁ bhītidāyine |
namo dakṣamakhaghnāya bhaganetrāpahāriṇe ||3-87-26
I bow to the lord, the destroyer. I bow to the lord having the form of terror. I bow to the lord who gives fear to the terrible. I bow to the lord, the destroyer of the sacrifice conducted by dakṣa. I bow to the lord who took away the eyes of bhaga.
umāpate namastubhyaṁ kailāsanilayāya ca |
ādidevāya devāya bhavāya bhavarūpiṇe ||3-87-27
O the lord of umā! I bow to you. I bow to the lord whose abode is kailasa. I bow to the primal lord. I bow to the lord bhava, the lord in the form of universe.
namaḥ kapālahastāya namo'jamathanāya ca |
tryambakāya namastubhyaṁ tryakṣāya ca śivāya ca ||3-87-28
I bow to the lord, holding a skull in his hands. I bow to the lord who destroyed the head of brahama. O the three eyed lord !I bow to you. I bow to the three eyed lord, shiva.
varadāya vareṇyāya namaste candrashekhara |
nama idhmāya haviṣe dhruvāya ca kṛśāya ca ||3-87-29
I bow to the lord who gives boons. I bow to the lord who is to be respected. I bow to the lord who wears the moon on his head. I bow to the lord in the form of firewood for sacrifice (idhma), I bow to the lord in the form of sacrificial offerings (haviṣa), I bow to the eternal lord (dhruva) and to the thin lord (kṛśa).
namaste śaktiyuktāya nāgapāśapriyāya ca |
virūpāya surūpāya bhadrapānapriyāya ca ||3-87-30
I bow to lord shiva who is yoked with goddess shakti. I bow to the lord who likes the binding by serpents, the lord who is in the form of deformed as well as beautiful. I bow to the lord who likes auspicious drink.

śmaśānarataye nityaṁ jayaśabdapriyāya ca |
kharapriyāya kharvāya kharāya khararūpiṇe ||3-87-31
I bow to the lord who always like cremation ground, who likes the word victory. I bow to the lord who likes the harsh, who is harsh and who has the form of donkey.
bhadrapriyāya bhadrāya bhadrarūpadharāya ca |
virūpāya surūpāya mahāghorāya te namaḥ ||3-87-32
I bow to the lord who likes auspicious things. I bow to the auspicious lord, to the lord having an auspicious form. I bow to the lord having the form of deformed and O lord having a terrible form! I bow to you.
ghaṇṭāya ghaṇṭabhūṣāya ghaṇṭabhūṣaṇabhūṣiṇe |
tīvrāya tīvrarūpāya tīvrarūpapriyāya ca ||3-87-33
I bow to the lord having bells. I bow to the lord decorated by bells, who is decorated by ornaments having bells. I bow to the violent lord having a violent form and who likes violent forms.
nagnāya nagnarūpāya nagnarūpapriyāya ca |
bhūtāvāsa namastubhyaṁ sarvāvāsa namo namaḥ ||3-87-34
I bow to the unconcealed lord. I bow to the lord in the form of unconcealed. I bow to the lord who likes unconcealed forms. O lord who dwells in beings! I bow to you. O lord who dwells in all! I bow to you.
namaḥ sarvātmane tubhyam namaste bhūtidāyaka |
namaste vāmadevāya mahādevāya te namaḥ ||3-87-35
O the soul of all! I bow to you. I bow to you! O the provider of prosperity. O vāmadeva! I bow to you. O the great lord! I bow to you.
kā nu vākstutirūpā te ko nu stotuṁ praśaknuyāt |
kasya vā sphurate jihvā stutau stutimatāṁ vara ||3-87-36
Which are not the words of praise of yours? (All words of praise are yours.) Who is not there to praise you? ( All are praising you.) Whose tongues do not move to praise you, O lord, the best among those who are praised?
kṣamasva bhagavandeva bhakto'haṁ trāhi māṁ hara |
sarvātmansarvabhūteśa trāhi māṁ satatam hara||3-87-37
Please bear with me, O lord! O lord! I am your devotee. Protect me O lord! the destroyer. O the soul of all! O the lord of all beings! Protect me always, O the destroyer!
rakṣa deva jagannātha lokānsarvātmanā hara |
trāhi bhaktānsadā deva bhaktapriya sadā hara ||3-87-38
Protect me O lord! O the lord of the universe! O destroyer! Protect the world with all your soul. O lord who likes the devotees always! Protect your devotees always.
iti śrīmahābhārate khileṣu harivaṁśe bhaviṣyaparvaṇi kailāsayātrāyāṁ viṣṇukṛteśvarastutau saptāśītitamo'dhyāyaḥ
This is the eighty-seventh chapter of bhaviṣyaparva, harivaṁśa, khila of mahabhārata, in kalāsayātra, kṛṣṇa's hymn to shiva
