Parva 3 Chapter 93: pauṇḍrakasya dvārakāvarodhaḥ - pauṇḍraka besieges dvāraka

vaiśampāyana said: O great king! (janamejaya)! Then, pauṇḍra, proud due to the false sense of power, became angry. He spoke to nārada, the best among brahmins, in the assembly of kings. kimidaṁ prāha viprarṣe rājāhaṁ ca dvijaiḥ saha | gaccha tvaṁ kāmamatha vā mune śāpapradaḥ sadā ||3-93-2 (pauṇḍra said) : Why are you speaking like this? I am the king along with the twice-born. O Brahmin sage! You may go as you wish. You are always capable of cursing. bhītastvatto mahābuddhe gaccha tvaṁ kāmamadya hi | O the one with great intellect! I am afraid of you. You may go now as you wish. ityukto nṛpavīryeṇa tūṣṇīmeva sa nāradaḥ ||3-93-3 jagāmākāśagamano yatra tiṣṭhati keśavaḥ | (vaiśampāyana continued: O janamejaya!) nārada, who was spoken to like this by the valiant king, without saying anything, went through the sky to the place where keshava (kṛṣṇa) was staying (the hermitage of badarī). sa gatvā viṣṇusaṅkāśaṁ viṣṇoḥ sarvaṁ śaśaṁsa ha ||3-93-4 Reaching viṣṇu, he told everything to viṣṇu. tacchrutvā bhagavānviṣṇuryatheṣṭaṁ vadatāmiti | darpaṁ tasyāpaneṣyāmi śvobhūte dvijasattama ||3-93-5 Hearing that, lord viśṇu said: Let him speak as he likes. O the best among the twice- borns! I shall destroy his pride tomorrow. ityuktvā virarāmaiva tasminbadarikāśrame | Saying this, kṛṣṇa (viṣṇu) retired at the hermitage of badarika. tataḥ pauṇḍro mahābāhurbalairbahubhirīśvaraḥ ||3-93-6 aśvairanekasāhasrairgajairbahubhiranvitaḥ | Then, lord pauṇḍra, with great arms, along with many armies, having thousands of horses and many elephants, śastrakoṭisamāyuktaḥ sa rājā satyasaṁgaraḥ ||3-93-7 along with ten million weapons, that king, who fights a true battle, anekaśatasāhasraiḥ pattibhishcha samanvitaḥ | ekalavyaprabhṛtibhī rājabhiścha samantataḥ ||3-93-8 accompanied by hundred thousand foot soldiers, along with kings such as ekalavya, aṣṭau rathasahasrāṇi nāgānāmayutaṁ tathā | arbudaṁ pattisaṅghānāṁ tadbalaṁ samapadyata ||3-93-9 eight thousand chariots, ten thousand elephants, assembling an army of ten million foot soldiers, etena ca balenājau prasphurannṛpasattamaḥ | virarāja mahārāja udayastho mahāraviḥ ||3-93-10 sa yayau madhyarātreṇa nagarīṁ dvārakāmanu | the best of the kings, (king pauṇḍra), sparkling with the army, O great king, (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued), dazzling, like the great sun rising up in the morning, arrived at the city of doors (dvāraka) in the middle of the night. pattayo dīpikāhastā ratrau tamasi dāruṇe ||3-93-11 yayurvividhaśastraughā saṁpatanto mahābalāḥ | In the terrible darkness of the night, the foot soldiers, running, holding lighted torches along with varieties of weapons, dvārakāṁ vīryasaṁpannāṁ mahāghorāṁ nṛ+pottamāḥ ||3-93-12 rathaṁ mahāntamāruhya śastraughashcha samāvṛtam | and the highly powerful men, the highly terrible and valiant, the best among kings, mounted on great chariots, surrounded by group of weapons, arrived at the city of doors (dvāraka). paṭṭiśāsisamākīrṇaṁ gadāparighasaṅkulam ||3-93-13 śaktitomarasaṅkīrṇaṁ dhvajamālāsamācitam | kiṅkinījālasaṁyuktaṁ śarāsiprāsasṁyutam ||3-93-14 Mounted in the chariot having many spears with sharp edges (paṭṭiśa) and swords, many maces and iron bludgeons (parigha), many spears (shakti) and lances (tomara), flagstaff and garlands, decorated by a group of bells, having arrows, sword and barbed darts (prāsa), mahāghoraṁ mahāraudraṁ yugāntajaladopamam | dhanurgadāsamākīrṇaṁ mahāvādyopamam mahat ||3-93-15 highly terrible and highly violent, comparable to a water bearing cloud at the end of the era, having many bows and maces, having a sound similar to the sound of a great thunder cloud, agnyarkasadṛśākāraṁ yayau dvāravatīmanu | gṛhītadīpiko rājā vīryavānbalavānnṛpa ||3-93-16 having a form similar to fire and the sun, O king, (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued), the valiant, powerful king (pauṇḍra), holding a blazing torch, arrived at the city of doors (dvāraka). hantumaicchajjagannāthaṁ vṛṣṇīṁścaiva samantataḥ | ākarṣanbalamukhyāṁstānrājṣaḥ sarvānmahādyutiḥ ||3-93-17 The king (pauṇḍra) with great splendor, desiring to kill the lord of the universe (kṛṣṇa) along with vṛṣṇi-s, bringing great armies and all the kings, puradvāraṁ samāsādya balaṁ saṁsthāpya yatnataḥ | idaṁ provāca rājā tu nṛpānsarvānavasthitān ||3-93-18 arriving at the entrance of the city and taking efforts to establish the army, spoke thus to all the kings who assembled there. tāḍyatāmatra bherī tu nāma viśrāvya māmakam | yudhyatāṁ yudhyatāmatra deyaṁ vā pratidīyatām ||3-93-19 (king pauṇḍra said) "Let the kettle drums be played here, praising my name. Fight! Fight! Or pay the tribute that is to be given. āgataḥ pauṇḍrako rājā yuddhārthī vīravattaraḥ | hantukāmaḥ samagrānvaḥ kṛṣṇabāhubalāśrayān ||3-93-20 The highly valiant king pauṇḍra has arrived, asking for battle, with a desire to kill all of you, who are dependent on the power of kṛṣṇa's arms." iti te preṣitāḥ sarve samīyuḥ sūcakānbahūn | dīpikāścha pradīpyante bahvyaḥ śatasahasraśaḥ ||3-93-21 Many messengers, who were told to convey thus to the yādava-s, were sent, lighting, hundreds and thousands of torches. itashchetashcha rājāno yudhyante yuddhalālasāḥ | purīṁ te puratastatra kṣatriyāḥ śastriṇastadā ||3-93-22 Kings who were delighted in battles, the kṣatriya kings holding weapons, were fighting here and there, fighting against the city (dvāraka). siṁhanādaṁ prakurvantaḥ śastradhārāsamākulāḥ | kuto'yaṁ vṛṣṇipravaraḥ kuto rājā jagatpatiḥ ||3-93-23 The kings, holding many weapons, shouted with the roar of lions: Where is the chief of vṛṣṇi-s? Where is the king, the lord of the universe? kuto'yaṁ sātyakirvīraḥ kuto hārdikya eva ca | kuto nu balabhadrashcha sarvayādavasattamaḥ | Where is the valiant sātyaki? Where is hārdikya (kṛtavarma)?
