Parva 3 Chapter 94: yādavānāṁ yuddhodyogaḥ - war-effort of yādava-s

vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) Then all the yādava-s saw the large assembly of soldiers. Misfortune (the army of enemies) along with great weapons arrived in the night. mahāvātasamudbhūtaṁ kalpānte sāgaropamam | sannaddhāḥ samapadyanta śastriṇo yuddhalālasāḥ ||3-94-2 Like an ocean agitated by the great winds at the end of the era, the yādava-s, who enjoy fighting, took up weapons and became ready (to fight). gṛhītadīpikāḥ sarve yādavāḥ śastrayodhinaḥ | sātyakirbalabhadraścha hārdikyo niśaṭhastathā ||3-94-3 All the yādava-s, fighting with weapons, took up lighted torches. sātyaki, balabhadra, hārdikya (kṛtavarma) and niśaṭha, uddhavo'tha mahābuddhirugraseno mahābalaḥ | anye ca yādavāḥ sarve kavacapragrahe ratāḥ ||3-94-4 uddhava, the one with great intellect, the highly powerful ugrasena as well as all the other yādava-s, took up shields and got ready. samastayuddhakuśalā rātrau sannāhayodhinaḥ | śastriṇaḥ khaḍginaścaiva sarve śastrasamākulāḥ ||3-94-5 All were experts in battle. They, becoming ready to fight in the night, took up weapons and swords and all other weapons. yuddhāya samapadyanta bahavo bāhuśālinaḥ | rathino gadinashcaiva sādinaḥ sāyudhāstathā ||3-94-6 Many of them, having strong arms, reached the battle field, along with weapons, mounted on chariots as well as horses. nityayuktā mahātmāno dhanvinaḥ puruṣottamāḥ | niryayurnagarāttūrṇam dīpikābhiḥ samantataḥ ||3-94-7 Those great souls, expert bowmen, the best puruṣa-s, who were always ready, proceeded from the city, all around, carrying torches. kutaḥ pauṇḍraka ityevaṁ vadantaḥ sarvasātvatāḥ | dīpikādīpito desho nistamāḥ samapadyata ||3-94-8 All the sātvata-s (yādava-s) asked: Where is pauṇḍraka? Lighted by the torches, that place became devoid of darkness. tato vitimiro deśaḥ samantātpratyapadyata | yuddhaṁ samabhavadghoraṁ vṛṣṇibhiḥ śatrubhiḥ saha ||3-94-9 Immediately, that place became devoid of darkkness all around. Then, a terrible battle took place between the vṛṣṇi-s and their enemies. tato mahānsamabhavatsannādo romaharṣaṇaḥ | hayā hayaiḥ samāyuktā gajāścha gajayūthapaiḥ ||3-94-10 Then there was a great noise, causing bristling of the hairs of the body due to excitement. The horses opposed the horses and the elephants opposed the herd of elephants. rathā rathaiḥ samāyuktāḥ sādibhiḥ sādinastathā | khaḍginaḥ khaḍgibhiḥ sārdhaṁ gadibhirgadinastathā ||3-94-11 The chariots opposed the chariots. "This king, a highly valiant mace fighter is affecting all of us." ayaṁ rathī śarī chapī gadī tūṇī tanutravān | yādṛśaḥ sarvato yāti kuntapāṇirayaṁ balī ||3-94-15 "This chariot fighter is also having bow, arrows and quiver as well as maces." "This powerful fighter having spears is capable of going all over." ayamatra mahāśūlī saṁśritaḥ sarvatodisham | gajo'yaṁ saviṣāṇāgro vartate sarvataḥ prati ||3-94-16 "This fighter having a great spear reaches in all directions." "This tusker with poison at the tip of the tusk is reaching at all places." atisarvatragaḥ śūro vegavānvātasannibhaḥ | śarāṣccharaiḥ samāhanti daṇḍāndaṇḍairjagatpate ||3-94-17 "This valiant, having the speed similar to the wind is reaching at all places." O the king of the universe! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) The arrow is destroyed by the arrow and the staff is broken by the staff. kuntānkuntaiḥ samājaghnurgadābhiścha gadāstathā | parighānparighaiḥ sārdhaṁ śūlānccūlaiḥ samantataḥ ||3-94-18 The spear is broken by the spear and the mace is broken by the mace. There were thousands of conches producing great sounds. rātrau prādurabhūcchabdaḥ saṅgrāme romaharṣaṇaḥ | There was a terrible battle in the night with loud noises causing the bristling of the hairs of the body due to excitement. vartamāne mahāyuddhe vṛṣṇīnāṁ caiva taiḥ saha ||3-94-21 As the vṛṣṇi-s had a terrible battle with their enemies, kechidgrastāḥ samāpetuḥ pṛthivyāṁ pṛthivīkṣitaḥ | kechitpatitaśliṣṭāścha viprakīrṇaśirodharāḥ ||3-94-22 some kings, lords of the earth, were caught and fell down on the ground. Some joined those who already fell down. Some had their crowns completely shattered. petururvyāṁ mahāvīryā rājānaḥ śastrapāṇayaḥ | kechittu bhinnavarmāṇaḥ samāpetuḥ sahasradhā ||3-94-23 The great valiant kings, holding weapons in their hands, fell down on the earth. Some had their shields broken. Some ran and fought against each other. parasparaṁ samāśritya parasparavadhaiṣiṇaḥ | nyastaśastrā mahātmānaḥ samantātkṣatavigrahāḥ ||3-94-24 The fighters desiring to kill each other, fought against each by holding each other. The great souls fought with their wounded bodies even after losing their weapons. peturgatāsavaḥ kechidyamarāṣṭravivardhanāḥ | evaṁ te nihatā rājanyodhitāḥ sarva eva tu ||3-94-25 Some fell down dead, increasing the population of the kingdom of the god of death. (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) All of them fought against each other in this manner. etasminnantare śūra ekalavyo niṣādayaḥ | dhanurgṛhya mahāghoraṁ kālāntakayamopamaḥ ||3-94-26 In between this, the valiant niṣāda king, ekalavya, comparable to the killer of the god of death, yama, took up a highly terrible bow śarairanekasāhasrairardayāmāsa yādavān | and shot many thousands of arrows and oppressed the yādavas. paraḥ śataiḥ śarāṇāṁ tu niśitairmarmabhedhibhiḥ ||3-94-27 vṛṣṇīnāṁ ca balaṁ sarvaṁ pothayāmāsa sarvataḥ | yuddhyataḥ śastrapāṇīṁścha kṣatriyānvīryavattarān ||3-94-28 Shooting more than hundred sharp arrows capable of splitting the soft spots, he oppressed all the army of vṛṣṇi-s all around and the best valiant kṣatriya-s who were fighting holding weapons in their hands. niśaṭhaṁ paṣchaviṁśatyā śarāṇāṁ nataparvaṇām | sāraṇaṁ daśabhirviddhvā hārdikyaṁ paṣchabhiḥ śaraiḥ ||3-94-29 He shot twenty and five arrows with sharp tips at niśaṭha and ten arrows at sāraṇa and five arrows at hārdikya (kṛtavarma). ugrasenaṁ navatyāśu vasudevaṁ ca saptabhiḥ | uddhavaṁ daśabhishcaiva hyakrūraṁ paṣchabhiḥ śaraiḥ ||3-94-30 He shot ninety arrows at ugrasena and seven arrows at vasudeva , ten arrows at uddhava and five arrows at akrūra. evamekaikaśaḥ sarve nihatā niśitaiḥ śaraiḥ | vidrāvya yādavīṁ senāṁ nāma viśrāvya vīryavān ||3-94-31 In this way, shooting sharp arrows at each, he (the niśāda king, ekalavya) scattered the army of yādavas. Then the valiant king called out the names and said: ekalavyo yaduvṛṣānvīryavānbalavānaham | idānīṁ sātyakirvīraḥ kva yāsyati mahābalaḥ ||3-94-32 O the bulls (prominent) among the yadavas.
