Parva 3 Chapter 96: sātyakipauṇḍrakayoryuddham - sātyaki-pauūṇraka battle

vaiśampāyana said: O great king! (janamejaya!) Then sātyaki, the chief among the vṛṣṇi-s became angry. O king! Then, as if remembering the words of vāsudeva (kṛṣṇa), he spoke these words: avochadīdṛśaṁ vākyaṁ vāsudevaṁ nṛpadhamaḥ | ko nāma jagatāṁ nāthamitthaṁ brūyājjijīviṣuḥ ||3-96-2 The vile king has spoken these words referring to vāsudeva (kṛṣṇa). Who, wishing to live, will speak like this, about the lord of the universe? mṛtyustvāṁ sarvathā yāti vadantaṁ tādṛśaṁ vacaḥ | jihvā te śatadhā dīryādvadatastādṛśaṁ vacaḥ ||3-96-3 Death will come to you by all means, who speaks words like this. Your tongue, which speaks words like these, will split into hundred parts. eṣa te pātayiṣyāmi śiraḥ kāyāccha pauṇḍraka | yannāma vāsudeveti tava saṁprati vartate ||3-96-4 O pauṇḍraka! Here, I will make your head fall from your body. Now you have the name as vāsudeva, yāvatpatati kāyātte śirastāvatpravartate | sa eva śvo na bhagavānvāsudevo bhaviṣyati ||3-96-5 which will stand till your head falls off from your body. Tomorrow, only lord (kṛṣṇa) himself will be known as lord vāsudeva. eka eva jagannāthaḥ kartā sarvasya sarvagaḥ | durātmansarvathā devo bhaviṣyati na saṁśayaḥ ||3-96-6 Oh, one with a wicked soul! The only one lord of the universe, the doer of all and the one who goes everywhere by all means (kṛṣṇa), will be known as Lord. There is no doubt. eṣa te'haṁ śiraḥ kāyātpātayiṣyāmi rājaka | yadasau bhagavānviṣṇurnāgamiṣyati sāṁpratam ||3-96-7 O petty king! Here, I will make your head fall off from your body, if lord viṣṇu do not arrive here. astravīryaṁ balaṁ caiva sarvaṁ darshaya sāṁpratam | nātaḥ parataraṁ rājanvīryam ca tava vartate ||3-96-8 You may show the valiance and all round power of your arrows, O king, as if you have no valiance superior to this. sarvaṁ darshaya yatnena sthito'smi vyavasāyavān | śarī cāpī gadī khaḍghī sarvathāhamupasthitaḥ ||3-96-9 Show all your power with efforts. I am standing here, ready. Holding the arrow, bow, mace, sword, I am standing here always. naitannagaramāyāsīḥ satyametadbravīmyaham | sarvathā kṛtakṛtyo'smi dṛṣṭvā tvāṁ vāsudevakam ||3-93-10 Never enter this city. I am telling you the truth. After seeing you, O vāsudeva! I feel like one who has done what is to be done. tavāṅgaṁ tilaśaḥ kṛtvā shvabhyo dāsyāmi rājaka | Cutting your body in small pieces like sesame seeds (sesamum indica), O petty king, I shall feed to the dogs today. ityuktvā bāṇamādāya vāsudevaṁ mahābalaḥ ||3-96-11 ākarṇapūrṇamākṛṣya vivyādha niśitaṁ śaraṁ | (vaiśampāyana continued: O janamejaya!) Speaking thus, the highly powerful one (sātyaki) took up an arrow and pulling the bow string upto the ear, he shot the sharp arrow at (pauṇḍraka) vāsudeva. sa tena viddho yadunā vāsudevaḥ pratāpavān ||3-96-12 vamaṣchoṇitamatyuṣṇamaṅgānnetrānnṛpottama | That powerful vāsudeva (pauṇḍraka) who was shot by the great yādava (sātyaki), O the best among kings (vaiśampāyana continued: O janamejaya!), started emitting hot blood from the limbs of the body and eyes. tatashchukrodha nṛpatirvāsudevaḥ pratāpavān ||3-96-13 navabhirdaśabhishcaiva śaraiḥ sannataparvabhiḥ | vivyādha sātyakiṁ rājā nadaṁścha bahudhā kila ||3-96-14 Then the powerful king, vāsudeva (pauṇḍraka) became angry. The king shot sātyaki with nine and ten arrows with sharp edges, shouting in many ways. tato nārācamādāya niśitaṁ yamasaṁnibham | danurākṛṣya balavānvāsudevo nṛpottama ||3-96-15 vivyādha sātyakiṁ bhūyo nishi prahrādayansvakān | Then, O the best among kings! (janamejaya!vaiśampāyana continued) The powerful vāsudeva (pauṇḍraka) brought out a sharp arrow. Pulling the bow, the king again shot arrows at sātyaki in the night, cheered by his soldiers. nārācena samāviddhaḥ sātyakiḥ satyasaṅgaraḥ ||3-96-16 lalāṭe sudṛḍhaṁ vīro vṛṣṇīnāmagraṇīstadā | niṣasāda rathopasthe niścheṣṭa iva sattamaḥ ||3-96-17 sātyaki, the best among yādava-s, who fights the battle in the true sense, shot firmly at forehead by the sharp arrow, then was made to sit in the chariot, becoming devoid of all actions. tataḥ sa pauṇḍrako rājā viddhvā daśabhirāśugaiḥ | sārathiṁ paṣchaviṁśatyā hayāṁścha caturo nṛpa ||3-96-18 Then king pauṇḍraka shot ten arrows at the charioteer. The clever king shot twenty-five arrows at the horses. te hayā rudhirāktāṅgāḥ sārathiścha samantataḥ | vihvalāḥ samapadyanta vāsudevasya paśyataḥ ||3-96-19 The horses with blood coming out from their bodies along with the charioteer became distressed, watched by the king vāsudeva (pauṇḍraka). vāsudevo rathe cāpi siṁhanādaṁ samādade | tena nādena tatrābhūdvibuddhaḥ sātyakirnṛpa ||3-96-20 king vāsudeva (pauṇḍraka) roared in the lion's voice from the chariot. Due to that sound, O king! (janamejaya!vaiśampāyana continued ) sātyaki woke up. viddhānhayāṁstathā dṛṣṭvā sārathiṁ ca tathāgatam | śaineyo'tha mahāvīryo ruṣito nṛpasattamaḥ ||3-96-21 Seeing the horses as well as the charioteer struck by the arrows, the highly valiant son of shini (sātyaki), the best among the kings became angry. alaṁ drakṣyāmi te vīryamityuktvā bāṇamādade | vivyādha tena bāṇena vakṣasyenaṁ mahābalaḥ ||3-96-22 Saying "This is enough. I have seen your valiance", sātyaki took up an arrow. The highly powerful sātyaki shot that arrow at the chest of pauṇḍraka. tataścacāla tenājau vāsudevaḥ śareṇa ha | susrāva rudhiraṁ ghoramatyuṣṇaṁ vakṣaso nṛpa ||3-96-23 Struck by that arrow, vāsudeva (pauṇḍraka) was shaken. O king! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) A terrible stream of hot blood started flowing from his chest. rathopasthe papātāśu niḥśvasannurago yathā | kṛtyaṁ cāpi na jānāti kevalaṁ niṣasāda ha ||3-96-24 He fell down in the chariot. He sighed like a serpent. Without knowing what is to be done, he sat down without doing anything. sātyakistu rathaṁ viddhvā daśabhiḥ sāyakaistathā | dhvajaṁ ciccheda bhallena vāsudevasya vṛṣṇipaḥ ||3-96-25 Then sātyaki shot ten arrows at the chariot. The chief among vṛṣṇi-s, sātyaki cut off the flagstaff of vāsudeva (pauṇḍraka) by shooting the arrow, bhalla. hayāṁścha caturo hatvā bāṇaiḥ sārathimeva ca | yuyudhāno'tha rājendra pauṇḍrakasya ca paśyataḥ ||3-96-26 He killed the four horses and shot arrows at the charioteer, O the indra among kings! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) as pauṇḍraka was watching. sāratheścha śiraḥ kāyādaharatsa rathāttadā | rathagranthiṁ ca ciccheda hayāścha vyasavo'bhavan ||3-96-27 (By shooting arrows) he separated the head of the charioteer from his body. He cut off the knot of the chariot and killed the horses. cakraṁ ca tilaśaḥ kṛtvā bāṇairdaśabhiraṣjasā | jahāsa vipulaṁ rājanvāsudevaṁ mahābalaḥ ||3-96-28 He powdered the wheel like sesame (sesamum indica) seeds by shooting ten powerful arrows. Looking at vāsudeva (pauṇḍraka), the highly powerful sātyaki laughed loudly. tataḥ paraṁ mahatprāyaṁ sātyakirvṛṣṇinandanaḥ | śabdaṁ kṛtvā balī sākṣātsarvakṣatrasya paśyataḥ ||3-96-29 Immediately, sātyaki, the son of vṛṣṇi-s, in a powerful manner, shouted and as all kṣatriya-s were watching, śaraiḥ saptatisaṅkhyākairardayāmāsa satvaram | te śarāḥ śalabhākārā nipetuḥ sarvaśastadā ||3-96-30 oppressed pauṇḍraka quickly with seventy arrows. Those arrows, like flies, fell all over, everywhere, śirastaḥ pārśvataścaiva pṛṣṭhataḥ puratastathā | kevalaṁ dhairyanichayastṛṣārtaḥ śaravānyathā ||3-96-31 on the head, sides as well as on the back side and front side. Oppressed by the arrows all over, pauṇḍraka stood as bravery personified yathā manasvī riktashcha tathā tiṣṭhati pauṇḍrakaḥ | tatashchukrodha balavānvāsudevaḥ pratāpavān ||3-96-32 pauṇḍraka stood like a generous one becoming poor. Immediately the splendorous, powerful vāsudeva (pauṇḍraka) became angry. ardhacandraṁ samādāya vivyādha yudhi sātyakiṁ | viddhvā saptabhirāyāntaṁ krodhena prasphuranniva ||3-96-33 He took up the weapon half moon and threw it at sātyaki. Shaking with anger he shot seven arrows. viddho'tha sātyakistena śaraiḥ paṣchabhirāśugaiḥ | cāpaṁ ciccheda pauṇḍrasya siṁhanādaṁ vyanīnadat ||3-96-34 Immediately, sātyaki shot five arrows and cut off the bow of pauṇḍraka and roared in the voice of the lion. vāsudevo gadāṁ gṛhya bhrāmayitvā padātpadam | tvaritaṁ pātayāmāsa sātyakervakṣasi prabho ||3-96-35 O lord! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) vāsudeva took up a mace and whirled the same around and quickly made it fall on the chest of sātyaki. savyena tāṁ samākṛṣya kareṇa yadunandanaḥ | śaraṁ pragṛhya vivyādha sātyakiryudhi pauṇḍrakam ||3-96-36 The son of yadu, sātyaki, dragged the mace with his left hand. In the battle, taking up an arrow, sātyaki shot at pauṇḍraka. tamantare gṛhītvāśu vāsudevaḥ pratāpavān | shaktibhirdaśabhishcaiva sātyakiṁ nijaghāna ha ||3-96-37 Grabbing the arrow in between, the splendorous vāsudeva (pauṇḍraka) struck sātyaki with ten spears. tābhirviddho raṇe vīraḥ sātyakiḥ satyasaṅgaraḥ | apāsya dhanuranyattaddhanurādāya satvaram | ājaghāna tadā vīro vṛṣṇīnāmagraṇīrnṛpaḥ ||3-96-38 The valiant sātyaki, the one who fights a battle truthfully was struck in the battle with those arrows.
