Parva 3 Chapter 97: sātyakipauṇḍrakayoryuddham - sātyaki- pauṇḍraka battle continues

vaiśampāyana said: O king! (janamejaya!) Then the son of vṛṣṇi-s, sātyaki, became angry. Holding the mace in his hand, he struck vāsudeva (pauṇḍraka) forcefully with his mace. sātyakiṁ vāsudevastu gadayābhyahanadbalī | The powerful vāsudeva (pauṇḍraka) also struck sātyaki with his mace. tāvudyatagadau vīrau śuśubhāte sudāruṇau ||3-97-2 dṛptau vane yathā siṁhau parasparavadhaiṣiṇau | Both the valiants, holding the mace, dazzled terribly in the battle field, like proud lions fighting in the forest, desiring to kill each other. tataḥ sa sātyakiḥ kruddhaḥ savyaṁ maṇḍalamāgamat ||3-97-3 dakṣiṇaṁ vāsudevastu taṁ jaghāna stanāntare | Then the angry sātyaki himself took a round in the battle field. vāsudeva (pauṇḍraka) struck sātyaki on the right side of his chest between his breasts. yuyudhāno'tha vīrastu bāhvormadhyamatāḍayat ||3-97-4 dṛḍhaṁ sa tāḍito vīro jānubhyāmapatadbhuvi | The valiant yuyudhāna (sātyaki) struck vāsudeva (pauṇḍraka) in the middle of his arms. The valiant struck forcefully, fell down on his knee. tata utthāya vīrastu lalāṭe'bhyahanadgadām ||3-97-5 viṣaṇṇaḥ kiṣchidāsthāya tata utthāya satvaram | The valiant struggled, got up and struck on the forehead with his mace. gadayābhyahanadvīraḥ sātyakiḥ pauṇḍrasattamam ||3-97-6 The valiant sātyaki struck the best among the kings, pauṇḍraka with his mace. vāsudevo balirvīraḥ sākṣānmṛtyurivāparaḥ | jaghāna gadayā vṛṣṇiṁ nirdahanniva cakṣuṣā ||3-97-7 The valiant, powerful vāsudeva (pauṇḍraka), terrible like the real death struck the vṛṣṇi (sātyaki) with his mace, as though burning him with his looks. sa tayā tāḍito vṛṣṇirgadayā bāhumuktayā | Alambya bhūmiṁ sahasā mṛtyuraṅkagato yathā ||3-97-8 The vṛṣṇi (sātyaki) struck by the mace released from the hand, suddenly took support from the earth (fell down with his hands supporting his body) as if he went to near death. saṁjṣāṁ punaḥ samālambya pāṇibhyāṁ dṛḍhameva ca | gadāṁ tasya mahārāja gṛhītvā pragraheṇa ha ||3-97-9 O great king! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) Regaining his consciousness and jumping forward and catching the mace firmly with his hands, dvidhā kṛtvā mahāgurvīṁ gadāṁ kālāyasīṁ śubhām | utsṛjya sahasā vīraḥ siṁhanādaṁ vyanīnadat ||3-97-10 breaking the huge, heavy and auspicious mace of iron in two pieces and throwing it away all of a sudden, the valiant sātyaki roared in the voice of a lion. tata utsṛjya rājā tu vāsudevo mahābalaḥ | savyena sātyakiṁ gṛhya dakṣiṇena kareṇa ha ||3-97-11 muṣṭiṁ kṛtvā mahāghoraṁ vāsudevaḥ pratāpavān | tāḍayāmāsa madhye tu stanayoḥ sātyakernṛpa ||3-97-12 Then leaving it, the highly powerful king vāsudeva (pauṇḍraka) caught sātyaki with his left arm. Making his right arm in the form of a highly terrible fist , O king! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) the splendorous vāsudeva (pauṇḍraka) struck sātyaki forcefully on his chest between his breasts. shaineyo vṛṣṇivīrastu gadāmutsṛjya satvaram | talenābhyahanadvīro vāsudevaṁ raṇājire ||3-97-13 The son of shini, the valiant vṛṣṇi (sātyaki) quickly abandoned his mace. The valiant spread his palm and struck vāsudeva (pauṇḍraka) in the battle. talena vāsudevo'pi sātyakiṁ satyasaṅgaram | tayorevaṁ mahāghoraṁ talayuddhaṁ pravartata ||3-97-14 Then vāsudeva (pauṇḍraka) also struck sātyaki, who fights truthfully , with his palm. Now, with both the great valiants, desiring to kill each other, yudhyamānau mahāvīrau tadā svargaṁ gamiṣyataḥ | anyathā noparamyetāṁ yuddhādvīrau sunishchitau ||3-97-21 "The great valiants fighting each other will go to heaven. Otherwise, the valiants, firm in battle will not stop." aho vīryamaho dhairyametayorbalaśālinoḥ | etau mahābalau loke etau prakṛtisattamau ||3-97-22 "What a valiance! What bravery the powerful fighters have! Both are highly powerful in battle, both are best in their fighting nature." naivaṁ yuddhaṁ mahāghoramāsīddevāsureṣvapi | na shruto na ca vā dṛṣṭaḥ saṅgrāmo'yaṁ kadācana ||3-97-23 "A highly terrible battle like this did not happen even between the deva-s and asuras. We have neither heard nor seen such a battle ever before." ete vai sainikā brūyuḥ senayorubhayorapi | rātrau niśīthe meghaughe dṛṣṭvā yuddhaṁ sudāruṇam ||3-97-24 The soldiers of both the armies said so, seeing the highly terrible battle in the middle of the night clouds covering the sky. atha tau bāhubhirvīrau saṁnipetaturaṣjasā | The valiant fighters came running forcefully, swinging their arms. daśabhirmuṣṭibhirjaghne sātyakiḥ pauṇḍrakaṁ tadā ||3-97-25 paṣchabhiḥ sātyakiṁ pauṇḍraḥ samājaghne mahābalaḥ | Then sātyaki hit pauṇḍraka ten times with his fist.
