Parva 3 Chapter 99: pauṇḍrakayuddham - the battles continue

vaiśampāyana said: (O janamejaya!) Then those who eat raw flesh ate all the dead bodies. They laughed in many ways with terrible sound echoing on the earth. rākṣasāścha piśācāścha pibantaḥ śoṇitaṁ bahu | āśikhaṁ bhuṣjate rājaṣchavasya piśitāśanāḥ ||3-99-2 O king! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued): The rākṣasa-s and piśāca-s drank lots of blood. The eaters of raw flesh, ate the dead bodies from nail upto the hair on the head. nṛtyanti sma tadā rājannagaryāṁ raṇatośitāḥ | O king! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued): They, becoming happy due to the battle, danced in that city. kākā balākā gṛdhrāścha śyenā gomāyavastathā ||3-99-3 bhakṣayantaḥ pravartante rākṣasāścaiva dāruṇāḥ | Crows, cranes, vultures, eagles as also jackals and terrible rākṣasa-s roamed in the battle field, eating the dead bodies. etasminnantare vīro niṣādo labdhasaṁjṣakaḥ ||3-99-4 hatānsarvānsamālokya niṣādānnagacāriṇaḥ | gadāmādāya kupito rāmameva jagāma ha ||3-99-5 During this time, the valiant niṣāda king (ekalavya) regained his consciousness. Seeing all the residents of the mountains (niṣāda-s) killed, he became angry. Taking up a mace, he opposed (bala)rāma. jaghāna gadayā rājaṁśchatradeśe niṣādapaḥ | O king! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) The niṣāda king (ekalavya) struck balarāma on the collar bone with his mace. tato rāmo gadī rājanniṣādaṁ bāhuśālinam ||3-99-6 Ajaghne gadayā krūraṁ madamatto halāyudhaḥ | Then O king! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) Then (bala)rāma, intoxicated with pride, having the plough as weapon, with the mace, struck the cruel niṣāda king, ekalavya, having powerful arms. tayoshcha tumulaṁ yuddhaṁ gadābhyāṁ samavartata ||3-99-7 Then there was a tumultuous battle of maces between them. ākāśe śabda āsīttu tayoryuddhe mahābhuja | samudrāṇāṁ yathā ghoṣaḥ sarveṣāṁ sannigacchatām ||3-99-8 O the one with powerful arms! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) While they were fighting, the sky became full of sounds, similar to the sounds when there is a collision among all the oceans. kalpakṣaye mahārāja śabdaḥ sutumulo'bhavat | kṣobhito nāgarājaścha nāgāḥ kṣobhaṁ samāyayuḥ ||3-99-9 O great king! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) Similar to the tumultuous sound at the decline of the era, the king of serpents as well as the prominent serpents became agitated. pṛthivī cāntarikṣaṁ ca sarvaṁ śabdamayaṁ babhau | All the entire earth and the sky became full of variety of sounds. tataḥ sa pauṇḍrako rājā sātyakiṁ vṛṣṇinandanam ||3-99-10 gadayaiva jaghānāśu satvaraṁ raṇakovidaḥ | Then king pauṇḍraka, the expert in battle, quickly struck sātyaki, the son of vṛṣṇi-s with his mace. yuyudhāno balī rājanvāsudevaṁ jaghāna ha ||3-99-11 tayoshcha tumulaḥ śabdaḥ prādurāsīnmahāraṇe | Then O king! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) the powerful yuyudhāna (sātyki) struck vāsudeva (pauṇḍraka). There was a tumultuous sound in the great battle between them. caturṇāṁ yudyatāṁ rājanparasparavadhaiṣiṇām ||3-99-12 brahmāṇḍakṣobhaṇo rājanchabda āsītsudāruṇaḥ | O king! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued) As all the four were fighting with a desire to kill each other, there was a terrible sound agitating the universe. tato rajaḥ prādurabhūttasminsaṅgrāmamūrdhani ||3-99-13 tārakā niṣprabhā rājaṁstamasyevaṁ kṣayaṁ gate | Then the sphere of light (sun) rose at the battlefront. The stars lost their splendor. O king! (janamejaya! vaiśampāyana continued). The darkness started declining. uṣasi pratibuddhāyāṁ tato niḥśeṣatāṁ yayau ||3-99-14 udito bhagavānsūryaścandraścha kṣayamāyayau | When the morning light appeared, all the darkness was destroyed. The sun lord rose up and the moon started declining. tayoryuddhaṁ prādurabhūchcaturṇāṁ bāhuśālinām | devāsurasamaṁ rājannudito bhāskare mahat ||3-99-15 O king!
