तं जुगुप्सितकर्माणं नृशंसं निरपत्रपम् वसुदेवो महाभाग उवाच परिसान्‍त्वयन् ॥ ३६ ॥

taṁ jugupsita-karmāṇaṁ nṛśaṁsaṁ nirapatrapam vasudevo mahā-bhāga uvāca parisāntvayan

tam unto him (Kaṁsa) ; jugupsita karmāṇam — who was ready to commit such an offensive act ; nṛśaṁsam very cruel ; nirapatrapam shameless ; vasudevaḥ Vasudeva ; mahā bhāgaḥ — the greatly fortunate father of Vāsudeva ; uvāca said ; parisāntvayan pacifying .

Translation

Wanting to pacify Kaṁsa, who was so cruel and envious that he was shamelessly ready to kill his sister, the great soul Vasudeva, who was to be the father of Kṛṣṇa, spoke to him in the following words.

Wanting to pacify Kaṁsa, who was so cruel and envious that he was shamelessly ready to kill his sister, the great soul Vasudeva, who was to be the father of Kṛṣṇa, spoke to him in the following words. KB 10.1.36 Vasudeva was astonished at Kaṁsa’s behavior, and in order to pacify the cruel, shameless brother-in-law, he began to speak as follows, with great reason and evidence.

Purport

Vasudeva, who was to be the father of Kṛṣṇa, is described here as mahā-bhāga, a very upright and sober personality, because although Kaṁsa was ready to kill Vasudeva’s wife, Vasudeva remained sober and unagitated. In a peaceful attitude, Vasudeva began to address Kaṁsa by putting forward reasonable arguments. Vasudeva was a great personality because he knew how to pacify a cruel person and how to forgive even the bitterest enemy. One who is fortunate is never caught, even by tigers or snakes.

Vasudeva, seeing before his eyes that Kamsa ready to kill his wife, did not show anger, because he was an ocean of good qualities such as patience, gravity, forgiveness, and cleverness (mahabhaga). The question may arise, "How could a cruel person such as Kamsa listen to his advice?" Therefore he is described as mahabhaga. Even tigers and snakes do not create obstacles when they meet those possessed of good qualities.

His censorable act was the killing of his sister. He is called cruel because he gave up his affection. He is called shameless because he was going to perform this act in front of everyone on a festive occasion. Thus he would be repeated criticized for his evil action. Vasudeva is called greatly fortunate. Śrīdhara Svāmī explains that at his birth the devatās played drums in great joy, because he had the ability to prevent Kaṁsa from harming Devakī since from him would appear the avatāra of the Lord. Vasudeva knew this. Or by using the word mahā-bhāga Śukadeva indicates that Vasudeva had this intention of protecting Devakī. He began to pacify Kaṁsa. He wanted to enlighten Kaṁsa gradually by making him affectionate, by reasoning and by sāma. There are five types of sāma or conciliation: referring to relationships, showing advantages or gains, assistance, identity, and glorifying the person’s qualities. There are two types of bheda or creating dissension: creating fear in this life and fear in the next.
