श्रीशुक उवाच गोपा नन्दादय: श्रुत्वा द्रुमयो: पततोरवम् । तत्राजग्मु: कुरुश्रेष्ठ निर्घातभयशङ्किता: ॥ १ ॥

śrī-śuka uvāca gopā nandādayaḥ śrutvā drumayoḥ patato ravam tatrājagmuḥ kuru-śreṣṭha nirghāta-bhaya-śaṅkitāḥ

Synonyms

śrī — śukaḥ uvāca — Śrī Śukadeva Gosvāmī said ; gopāḥ — all the cowherd men ; nanda — ādayaḥ — headed by Nanda Mahārāja ; śrutvā — hearing ; drumayoḥ — of the two trees ; patatoḥ — falling down ; ravam — the high sound, as terrible as a thunderbolt ; tatra — there, on the spot ; ājagmuḥ — went ; kuru — śreṣṭha — O Mahārāja Parīkṣit ; nirghāta — bhaya — śaṅkitāḥ — who were afraid of falling thunderbolts .

Translation

Śukadeva Gosvāmī continued: O Mahārāja Parīkṣit, when the yamala-arjuna trees fell, all the cowherd men in the neighborhood, hearing the fierce sound and fearing thunderbolts, went to the spot.

Śukadeva Gosvāmī continued: O Mahārāja Parīkṣit, when the yamala-arjuna trees fell, all the cowherd men in the neighborhood, hearing the fierce sound and fearing thunderbolts, went to the spot. KB 10.11.1 When the twin arjuna trees fell to the ground, making a sound like the falling of thunderbolts, all the inhabitants of Gokula, including Nanda Mahārāja, immediately came to the spot.

The eleventh chapter describes the release of Krsna from the mortar, buying fruits, entering Vrndavana, herding the cows in the forest and killing of Vatsasura and Bakasura.

They hurried to the spot. The sound was like thunder without clouds. They worried about demons attacking the two boys. Yaśodā and other women did not come first though they were close because they had fainted. Śukadeva addresses Parīkṣit as “best of the Kurus” as if he would give protection, since Nanda and others were in fear.

They heard from far off the sound of the two trees falling or the sound of falling of the trees, loud like thunder. They came outside of their houses to this place where the trees were growing. Yaśodā and other elder gopīs could not come quickly. Or because the men were more important they are mentioned first. The women came later. Thunder without clouds indicates something inauspicious. O best of the Kurus! You are the protector of the Kuru dynasty and a great devotee. Your grandfather was similarly always anxious for your safety, worried with great affection.
