भारतैवं वत्सपेषु भुञ्जानेष्वच्युतात्मसु । वत्सास्त्वन्तर्वने दूरं विविशुस्तृणलोभिता: ॥ १२ ॥

Verse text

bhārataivaṁ vatsa-peṣu bhuṣjāneṣv acyutātmasu vatsās tv antar-vane dūraṁ viviśus tṛṇa-lobhitāḥ

Synonyms

bhārata — O Mahārāja Parīkṣit ; evam — in this way (while they were enjoying their lunch) ; vatsa — peṣu — along with all the boys tending the calves ; bhuṣjāneṣu — engaged in taking their food ; acyuta — ātmasu — all of them being very near and dear to Acyuta, Kṛṣṇa ; vatsāḥ — the calves ; tu — however ; antaḥ — vane — within the deep forest ; dūram — far away ; viviśuḥ — entered ; tṛṇa — lobhitāḥ — being allured by green grass .

Translation

O Mahārāja Parīkṣit, while the cowherd boys, who knew nothing within the core of their hearts but Kṛṣṇa, were thus engaged in eating their lunch in the forest, the calves went far away, deep into the forest, being allured by green grass.

O Mahārāja Parīkṣit, while the cowherd boys, who knew nothing within the core of their hearts but Kṛṣṇa, were thus engaged in eating their lunch in the forest, the calves went far away, deep into the forest, being allured by green grass. KB 10.13.12 At that time, the calves that were pasturing nearby entered into the deep forest, allured by new grasses, and gradually went out of sight.

Purport (Jiva Goswami)

While the boys whose minds (ātmasu) were absorbed in the Lord as described (evam) ate their meal, the calves, greedy for grass, entered a forest far away. Or, Brahmā made the calves greedy for grass since he did not have the power to take the calves directly from the Lord. Śukadeva calls out to Parīkṣit to express grief.

Purport (Sanatana Goswami)

The boys ate without stopping (acyutatmasu) or ate while thinking of Kṛṣṇa. The calves desiring soft, sweet grass went further and further away. Or the calves which were confined to one area of grass and had finished that grass, became greedy for other grass out of hunger, while the boys were absorbed in eating. Or developed greed for grass by Brahmā’s will. Otherwise they could not leave the Lord. O Bhārata! Śukadeva cries out in grief because of the great misfortune that would arise amidst the great bliss. Yudhiṣṭhira of the same dynsasty while engaged in Rājasūya festival and other royal enjoyments had to suffer banishment to the forest. This happens to fully dedicated devotees by the will of the Lord to manifest special rasa for them.
