ततो नृपोन्मर्दनमज्जलेपना- लङ्काररक्षातिलकाशनादिभि: । संलालित: स्वाचरितै: प्रहर्षयन् सायं गतो यामयमेन माधव: ॥ २३ ॥

tato nṛponmardana-majja-lepanā- laṅkāra-rakṣā-tilakāśanādibhiḥ saṁlālitaḥ svācaritaiḥ praharṣayan sāyaṁ gato yāma-yamena mādhavaḥ

Synonyms

tataḥ thereafter ; nṛpa O King (Mahārāja Parīkṣit) ; unmardana by massaging them with oil ; majja by bathing ; lepana by smearing the body with oil and sandalwood pulp ; alaṅkāra by decorating with ornaments ; rakṣā by chanting protective mantras ; tilaka by decorating the body with tilaka marks in twelve places ; aśana ādibhiḥ — and by feeding them sumptuously ; saṁlālitaḥ in this way cared for by the mothers ; sva ācaritaiḥ — by their characteristic behavior ; praharṣa yan — making the mothers very much pleased ; sāyam evening ; gataḥ arrived ; yāma yamena — as the time of each activity passed ; mādhavaḥ Lord Kṛṣṇa .

Translation

Thereafter, O Mahārāja Parīkṣit, as required according to the scheduled round of His pastimes, Kṛṣṇa returned in the evening, entered the house of each of the cowherd boys, and engaged exactly like the former boys, thus enlivening their mothers with transcendental pleasure. The mothers took care of the boys by massaging them with oil, bathing them, smearing their bodies with sandalwood pulp, decorating them with ornaments, chanting protective mantras, decorating their bodies with tilaka and giving them food. In this way, the mothers served Kṛṣṇa personally.

KB 10.13.23 All the boys dealt with their mothers as usual, and the mothers also, on the approach of evening, bathed their respective children, decorated them with tilaka and ornaments and gave them necessary food after the day’s labor.

With the passing of time (yama yamena), in the evening, Madhava (meaning Krsna and his expansions as cowherd boys), returned home (to their respective homes.) The mothers attended to him by smearing fragrant oil on his body (unmardana), bathing him (majja), anointing him with sandalwood, ornamenting him, tying him with raksa bandha, applying tilaka and offering asana and food in the evening.

In the form of their sons, he lived happily in each of the houses. According to the rules of the house (yama) in the last prahara of the day (yāma), Kṛṣṇa came back in the evening. He had to come home at that time, because it was necessary to bring the calves back before the cows returned after constantly filling themselves with a wealth of grass during the rainy season. Evening (sāyam) lasts for six daṇḍas or two hours and 24 minutes at the end of the day. He was cared for completely (saṁlālitaḥ) by the mothers, with massaging etc. Śukadeva calls out to Parīkṣit in astonishment. Unmardana is massaging with oil. Majja is a bath. Lepana is applying sandalwood and other ointments. The word ādi indicates asking about what happened in the forest and putting them to bed. Mādhava means the consort of Lakṣmī. This indicates that the wealth of each house increased.
