तत: समन्ताद्देवधूमकेतु- र्यद‍ृच्छयाभूत् क्षयकृद् वनौकसाम् । समीरित: सारथिनोल्बणोल्मुकै- र्विलेलिहान: स्थिरजङ्गमान् महान् ॥ ७ ॥

tataḥ samantād dava-dhūmaketur yadṛcchayābhūt kṣaya-kṛd vanaukasām samīritaḥ sārathinolbaṇolmukair vilelihānaḥ sthira-jaṅgamān mahān

Synonyms

tataḥ then ; samantāt on all sides ; dava dhūmaketuḥ — a terrible forest fire ; yadṛcchayā suddenly ; abhūt appeared ; kṣaya kṛt — threatening destruction ; vana okasām — for all those present in the forest ; samīritaḥ driven ; sārathinā by its chariot driver, the wind ; ulbaṇa terrible ; ulmukaiḥ with meteorlike sparks ; vilelihānaḥ licking ; sthira jaṅgamān — all moving and nonmoving creatures ; mahān very great .

Translation

Suddenly a great forest fire appeared on all sides, threatening to destroy all the forest creatures. Like a chariot driver, the wind swept the fire onward, and terrible sparks shot in all directions. Indeed, the great fire extended its tongues of flame toward all moving and nonmoving creatures.

Suddenly a great forest fire appeared on all sides, threatening to destroy all the forest creatures. Like a chariot driver, the wind swept the fire onward, and terrible sparks shot in all directions. Indeed, the great fire extended its tongues of flame toward all moving and nonmoving creatures. KB 10.19.7 But by this time the forest fire had surrounded all of them, and the situation appeared to be very fearful. The flames increased as the wind blew very quickly, and it appeared that everything movable and immovable would be devoured.

Purport

Just as Kṛṣṇa, Balarāma and the cowherd boys were about to take their cows back home, the forest fire previously mentioned raged out of control and surrounded all of them.

After reuniting with the cows and wanting to leave that place, suddenly they found themselves surrounded by fire (dhuma ketu) in the forest (dava). It is said that this fire was actually a friend of Pralambha. The fire was stirred by the wind (sarathina) and blazing with fierce flames.

At that time (tataḥ), suddenly (yadṛcchayā) there arose (abhūt) a forest fire. Some say that this fire was a demon friend of Pralamba, since actual forest fires are forbidden from appearing in Vṛndāvana. It has sparks like meteors (ulbaṇolmukair). It fiercely burned (vilelihānaḥ) all beings because it spread everywhere (mahān).

After that (tataḥ) the forest fire which had started previously now spread in the eight directions (samantāt). Or at that time or place (tataḥ) the fire arose suddenly (yadṛcchayā) or by some fate. Some say that this fire demon was a friend of Pralamba. It seemed to destroy the inhabitants of Vraja. Or, it seemed to want to live among the people of Vraja since it entered Kṛṣṇa’s mouth later. Instead of vrajaukasām sometimes vanaukasām is seen. It destroyed with flames like a firebrand all the trees and animals since it spread everywhere (mahān).
