दिष्टय‍ा हरेऽस्या भवत: पदो भुवो भारोऽपनीतस्तव जन्मनेशितु: । दिष्टय‍ाङ्कितां त्वत्पदकै: सुशोभनै- र्द्रक्ष्याम गां द्यां च तवानुकम्पिताम् ॥ ३८ ॥

diṣṭyā hare ’syā bhavataḥ pado bhuvo bhāro ’panītas tava janmaneśituḥ diṣṭyāṅkitāṁ tvat-padakaiḥ suśobhanair drakṣyāma gāṁ dyāṁ ca tavānukampitām

diṣṭyā by fortune ; hare O Lord ; asyāḥ of this (world) ; bhavataḥ of Your Lordship ; padaḥ of the place ; bhuvaḥ on this earth ; bhāraḥ the burden created by the demons ; apanītaḥ now removed ; tava of Your Lordship ; janmanā by appearance as an incarnation ; īśituḥ You, the controller of everything ; diṣṭyā and by fortune ; aṅkitām marked ; tvat padakaiḥ — by Your lotus feet ; su śobhanaiḥ — which are transcendentally decorated with the marks of conchshell, disc, lotus and club ; drakṣyāma we shall surely observe ; gām upon this earth ; dyām ca in heaven also ; tava anukampitām due to Your causeless mercy upon us .

Translation

O Lord, we are fortunate because the heavy burden of the demons upon this earth is immediately removed by Your appearance. Indeed, we are certainly fortunate, for we shall be able to see upon this earth and in the heavenly planets the marks of lotus, conchshell, club and disc that adorn Your lotus feet.

O Lord, we are fortunate because the heavy burden of the demons upon this earth is immediately removed by Your appearance. Indeed, we are certainly fortunate, for we shall be able to see upon this earth and in the heavenly planets the marks of lotus, conchshell, club and disc that adorn Your lotus feet. KB 10.2.38 “Our dear Lord, O supreme controller, when You appear on earth, all the demons like Kaṁsa and Jarāsandha will be vanquished, and all good fortune will be ushered into the world. When You walk on the globe, Your lotus feet will impress on the ground the marks of Your soles, such as the flag, the trident and the thunderbolt. Thus You will grace both the earth and us on the heavenly planets who shall see those marks.

Purport

The soles of the Lord’s lotus feet are marked with śaṅkha-cakra-gadā-padma — conchshell, disc, club and lotus — and also by a flag and a thunderbolt. When Kṛṣṇa walks on this earth or in the heavenly planets, these marks are visible wherever He goes. Vṛndāvana-dhāma is a transcendental place because of Kṛṣṇa’s walking on this land frequently. The inhabitants of Vṛndāvana were fortunate to see these marks here and there. When Akrūra went to Vṛndāvana to take Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma away to the festival arranged by Kaṁsa, upon seeing the marks of the Lord’s lotus feet on the ground of Vṛndāvana, he fell down and began to groan. These marks are visible to devotees who receive the causeless mercy of the Supreme Personality of Godhead ( tavānukampitām ). The demigods were jubilant not only because the appearance of the Supreme Lord would do away with the burdensome demons, but also because they would be able to see upon the ground the transcendental marks from the soles of the Lord’s lotus feet. The gopīs always thought of the Lord’s lotus feet when He was walking in the pasturing grounds, and, as described in the previous verse, simply by thinking of the Lord’s lotus feet, the gopīs were fully absorbed in transcendence ( āviṣṭa-cetā na bhavāya kalpate ). Like the gopīs, one who is always absorbed in thought of the Lord is beyond the material platform and will not remain in this material world. It is our duty, therefore, always to hear, chant and think about the Lord’s lotus feet, as actually done by Vaiṣṇavas who have decided to live in Vṛndāvana always and think of the Lord’s lotus feet twenty-four hours a day.

In this verse the devatas hint at the Lord’s purpose of relieving the earth’s burden. Pada here means "coming from the feet," as the sruti says, "Padbhyam bhumi" the earth arose from the Lord’s feet. The burden of the earth, which arose from your feet, has been removed. We have understood that Kamsa, Jarsandha and others have been killed just by your appearance. We are fortunate to see the earth (gam) and heaven (dyam) mercifully marked with your young feet (padakaih), marked with flag and thunderbolt (susobhanaih).

It is our good fortune that you have relieved the earth (which are your feet) of suffering by your appearance. Or by attaining the highest fortune of your feet when you appear, you have relieved the earth of suffering. Actually the meaning should be “You have relieved the earth which arises from your feet.” But because cause and effect are non-different, the expression padaḥ bhuvaḥ (the burden of the earth which is your foot) is used. Śruti says padyām bhūmiḥ: earth arises from your feet. Akrūra later says agnir mukhaṁ te ’vanir aṅghriḥ: your face is fire and your feet are the earth. (SB 10.40.13) You have removed the suffering caused by Kaṁsa (bhāraḥ) by your appearance in Devakī (janmanā). Because of this, they say “O Lord who removes suffering (hare)!” One goal has been accomplished by benefiting the earth and devotees like us by removing the suffering of the earth which becomes the receptacle of the fragrance of your feet. But the main goal which gives success to all people will be accomplished by your astounding pastimes which give the earth and us the highest benefit. By good fortune we will see the earth marked with your little feet (padakaiḥ). The Lord should actually appear at the end of Dvārakā with a huge body like the devatās. But by mercy he appears with a small, soft body. The earth is ornamented with his foot prints and the heavens receive his mercy by his killing demons. Or the earth get s his foot prints and also his mercy by his foot prints or by spreading of bhakti, and the heavens get his mercy and his footprints when he takes the pārijāta tree since he left footprints in the pollen which fell from the pārijāta.
