प्रयात देवयजनं ब्राह्मणा ब्रह्मवादिन: । सत्रमाङ्गिरसं नाम ह्यासते स्वर्गकाम्यया ॥ ३ ॥

Verse text

prayāta deva-yajanaṁ brāhmaṇā brahma-vādinaḥ satram āṅgirasaṁ nāma hy āsate svarga-kāmyayā

Synonyms

prayāta — please go ; deva — yajanam — to the sacrificial arena ; brāhmaṇāḥ — brāhmaṇas ; brahma — vādinaḥ — followers of the Vedic injunctions ; satram — a sacrifice ; āṅgirasam nāma — known as Āṅgirasa ; hi — indeed ; āsate — they are now performing ; svarga — kāmyayā — with the motive of promotion to heaven .

Translation

[Lord Kṛṣṇa said:] Please go to the sacrificial arena where a group of brāhmaṇas, learned in the Vedic injunctions, are now performing the Āṅgirasa sacrifice to gain promotion to heaven.

[Lord Kṛṣṇa said:] Please go to the sacrificial arena where a group of brāhmaṇas, learned in the Vedic injunctions, are now performing the Āṅgirasa sacrifice to gain promotion to heaven. KB 10.23.3 He said, “My dear friends, please go to the house of the brāhmaṇas nearby. They are now engaged in performing the Vedic sacrifice known as Āṅgirasa, for they desire elevation to the heavenly planets. All of you please go to them.”

To show the brahmanas that he does not give mercy to those who do not have bhakti even though they are endowed with austerity, knowledge and religious principles, and that he gives mercy to those have bhakti, their wives, even though they lack knowledge and austerity, Krsna sent the boys to the brahmanas.

Go to the sacrificial arena (deva-yajanam). They are chanting the Vedas, but do not know the meaning of the Vedas. They are performing a sacrifice for elevation to Svarga.

Purport (Sanatana Goswami)

Go to the sacrificial arena (deva-yajanam). They are chanting the Vedas, but do not know the meaning of the Vedas. Or they do not know how to chant the Vedas (abrahma-vādinaḥ), nor do they know the meaning. Thus they are performing a sacrifice for elevation to Svarga. Hi indicates certainty. In the next verse he puts himself in a lower position and glorifies Balarāma. Though he had all good qualities like humility, his statement indicates lack of respect for them, as they desired Svarga.
