“I gave you the benediction that I would take birth as your son three times. The first time I was known as Pṛśnigarbha, born of Pṛśni and Sutapā, in the next birth I was Upendra, born of Aditi and Kaśyapa, and now for the third time I am born as Kṛṣṇa from you, Devakī and Vasudeva.
Purport
The Supreme Personality of Godhead chooses a mother and father from whom to take birth again and again. The Lord took birth originally from Sutapā and Pṛśni, then from Kaśyapa and Aditi, and again from the same father and mother, Vasudeva and Devakī. “In other appearances also,” the Lord said, “I took the form of an ordinary child just to become your son so that we could reciprocate eternal love.” Jīva Gosvāmī has explained this verse in his
Kṛṣṇa-sandarbha,
Ninety-sixth Chapter, where he notes that in text 37 the Lord says,
amunā vapuṣa,
meaning “by this same form.” In other words, the Lord told Devakī, “This time I have appeared in My original form as Śrī Kṛṣṇa.” Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī says that the other forms were partial expansions of the Lord’s original form, but because of the intense love developed by Pṛśni and Sutapā, the Lord appeared from Devakī and Vasudeva in His full opulence as Śrī Kṛṣṇa. In this verse the Lord confirms, “I am the same Supreme Personality of Godhead, but I appear in full opulence as Śrī Kṛṣṇa.” This is the purport of the words
tenaiva vapuṣā.
When the Lord mentioned the birth of Pṛśnigarbha, He did not say
tenaiva vapuṣā,
but He assured Devakī that in the third birth the Supreme Personality of Godhead Kṛṣṇa had appeared, not His partial expansion. Pṛśnigarbha and Vāmana were partial expansions of Kṛṣṇa, but in this third birth Kṛṣṇa Himself appeared. This is the explanation given in

by Śrīla Jīva Gosvāmī.
Purport (Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura)
"In the present birth I have been born with four arms. I was born in the first birth as Prsnigarbha, and in the second birth as Vamana. In the third birth I am born." This indicates that the birth as Krsna is the full,complete form and the previous two are his amsas. In verse 31 the Lord says to Devaki, "You were previously Prsni" but he did not say "Prsni is you." In verse 45 he says, "After thinking of me as your son in this you will go to my spiritual abode." By these evidences it is shown that Prsni and Sutapa are expansions of Devaki and Vasudeva.

When the Lord appeared as Pṛśnigarbha and Vāmana to them, he did not say tena vapuśā (by the form that you see now, Kṛṣṇa). Thus those forms are his aṁśas as expressed in the verse ete cāṁśa-kalāḥ purṁsaḥ kṛṣṇās tu bhagavān svayam: these are all aṁśas or kalās but Kṛṣṇa is Svayam Bhagavān. But now he appeared in svayam rūpa. The distinction is made in the following verse.
pṛśnigarbhas tu te buddhim ātmānaṁ bhagavān paraḥ
May Pṛśnigarbha protect your intelligence, and may the Supreme Bhagavān protect your soul. SB 10.6.25
That is the subtle implication of the present verse. The word vai expresses certainty. The Lord’s promise became true in his third appearance, fulfilling that they would have a son like the Lord they saw at the beginning (Kṛṣṇa with four arms).
