आहूय दूरगा यद्वत् कृष्णस्तमनुवर्ततीम् । वेणुं क्‍वणन्तीं क्रीडन्तीमन्या: शंसन्ति साध्विति ॥ १८ ॥

Verse text

āhūya dūra-gā yadvat kṛṣṇas tam anuvartatīm veṇuṁ kvaṇantīṁ krīḍantīm anyāḥ śaṁsanti sādhv iti

Synonyms

āhūya — calling ; dūra — who were far away ; gāḥ — the cows ; yadvat — just as ; kṛṣṇaḥ — Kṛṣṇa ; tam — him ; anuvartatīm — one gopī who was imitating ; veṇum — the flute ; kvaṇantīm — vibrating ; krīḍantīm — playing games ; anyāḥ — the other gopīs ; śaṁsanti — praised ; sādhu iti — “excellent!” .

Translation

When one gopī perfectly imitated how Kṛṣṇa would call the cows who had wandered far away, how He would play His flute and how He would engage in various sports, the others congratulated her with exclamations of “Well done! Well done!”

When one gopī perfectly imitated how Kṛṣṇa would call the cows who had wandered far away, how He would play His flute and how He would engage in various sports, the others congratulated her with exclamations of "Well done! Well done!" KB 10.30.18 Just as Kṛṣṇa used to call His cows by their different names, so the gopīs imitated Him, calling the cows by their respective names. One of the gopīs began to play on a flute, and another praised her the way Kṛṣṇa’s boyfriends praised Him while He played on His flute.

After enacting various pastimes, in the enacted of pastimes of the summer previous to killing Pralamba, the anubhāva called līlā is portrayed, imitating their beloved, in two verses, since this marked the appearance of his kaiśora age favorable for śṛṅgāra-rasa. Dūra-gā means cows which wandered away.

Now vocal imitation is described in five verses. Various pastimes before killing Pralamba are imitated in two verses. Since it was vocal imitation, or because of greater and greater absorption in imitating, there is no mention of imitating Kṛṣṇa. He called the cows situated far off in Vraja, just as he called the gopīs with the sound of his flute. Some praised others who had taken the role of cowherds (anuvartatīm), singing etc.
