तन्निशम्याब्रवीत्कृष्णो देशकालोचितं वच: नियुद्धमात्मनोऽभीष्टं मन्यमानोऽभिनन्द्य च ॥ ३६ ॥

tan niśamyābravīt kṛṣṇo deśa-kālocitaṁ vacaḥ niyuddham ātmano ’bhīṣṭaṁ manyamāno ’bhinandya ca

Translation

Hearing this, Lord Kṛṣṇa, who liked to wrestle and welcomed the challenge, replied with words appropriate to the time and place.

Hearing this, Lord Kṛṣṇa, who liked to wrestle and welcomed the challenge, replied with words appropriate to the time and place. KB 10.43.36 Kṛṣṇa immediately understood the purpose of Cāṇūra’s statements, and He prepared to wrestle with him. But according to the time and circumstances, He spoke as follows:

Hearing this and approving, Kṛṣṇa spoke suitable to the time and place. His intentions were otherwise however. He spoke in this way because he desired to fight. He desired to fight because he was Kṛṣṇa—the person famous for his amusing pastimes.

Kṛṣṇa spoke skilful words suitable to the circumstance. Or at that time, at that place he spoke such words, though they were not actually true. He welcomed the fight or the words of Cānūra, praising them by saying “Excellent!” since he was skilful at answering by his nature, or did this to increase his enthusiasm to fight.
