Translation
Infuriated at being unable to see Lord Keśava, the elephant sought Him out with his sense of smell. Once again Kuvalayāpīḍa seized the Lord with the end of his trunk, only to have the Lord forcefully free Himself.

Being able to see only to the end of its trunk, the elephant could not see Kṛṣṇa hiding behind its legs, but it tried to capture Him with its trunk.
Purport
Lord Kṛṣṇa allowed the elephant to seize Him so that the beast would be encouraged to keep fighting. Once Kuvalayāpīḍa had thus become proud, Lord Kṛṣṇa again thwarted him with His superior potency.

Not being able to see Krsna, the elephant detected him with his sense of smell, and seized Krsna with his trunk again. With a desire to display his feats to the public and encourage the elephant to fight, Krsna allowed himself to be caught by the elephant’s trunk. When the elephant thought he was successful, Krsna with great force freed himself saying "What kind of strength are you showing?" and escaped.
Purport (Jiva Goswami)
Puṣkareṇa means by the trunk but also hints that his trunk became soft like a lotus (puṣkara) on contacting Kṛṣṇa’s beautiful limbs.
