After this, Vasudeva had his sons initiated by sacred thread as the token of second birth, which is essential for the higher castes of human society. Vasudeva called for his family priest and learned brāhmaṇas, and the sacred thread ceremony of Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma was duly performed.
Purport (Visvanatha Cakravarti Thakura)
Vasudeva arranged to have the upanayana samskara performed by Garga (purosadha) and other brahmanas.
Purport (Jiva Goswami)
After that (atha) their upanayana was performed. Vasudeva performed the ceremony with his father named Śūra. That is suggested by the phrase śūra-sutaḥ (the son of Śūra). Rohiṇī was brought from Vraja.
Purport (Sanatana Goswami)
After Nanda had departed for Vraja, Vasudeva performed the saṁskāra, since he had to do it with his sons present in Mathurā. Vasudeva performed the ceremony with his father named Śūra. That is suggested by the phrase śūra-sutaḥ (the son of Śūra). Śūra also suggests capacity for all things. This was done according to the rules. O king! As a kṣatriya you know this procedure. Explaining the details is not necessary. Or Vasudeva was shining (rājan) because of great joy. Rohiṇī was brought from Vraja.
