संलक्ष्य राजन्नतिमानुषीं मतिम् ।
सम्मन्त्र्य पत्न्या स महार्णवे मृतं
बालं प्रभासे वरयां बभूव ह ॥ ३७ ॥

Translation
O King, the learned brāhmaṇa Sāndīpani carefully considered the two Lords’ glorious and amazing qualities and Their superhuman intelligence. Then, after consulting with his wife, he chose as his remuneration the return of his young son, who had died in the ocean at Prabhāsa.

O King, the learned brāhmaṇa Sāndīpani carefully considered the two Lords' glorious and amazing qualities and Their superhuman intelligence. Then, after consulting with his wife, he chose as his remuneration the return of his young son, who had died in the ocean at Prabhāsa.

When Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma offered Their service in this way, the teacher, Sāndīpani Muni, thought it wise to ask Them for something extraordinary, something no common student could offer. He therefore consulted with his wife about what to ask from Them. He and his wife had already seen the extraordinary potencies of Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma and could understand that the two boys were the Supreme Personality of Godhead. They decided to ask for the return of their son, who had drowned in the ocean near the shore at Prabhāsa-kṣetra.

According to Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī, the child was captured by the conchshell demon while playing at the Mahā-śiva-kṣetra.

At the great pilgrimage place of Siva, Prabhasa, his son, while playing in the water was swallowed by Sankhasura.

The child was swallowed by the demon while playing in the water when he went on pilgrimage to the great tīrtha of Śiva with his parents.

The intelligent brāhmaṇa (dvijaḥ) saw the astonishing greatness of the two boys, who in a very short time could absorb unlimited knowledge, which he thought (matim) was beyond human ability. Or he saw their greatness and their intelligence endowed with great qualities. He consulted with his wife because of wondering what to request, or because he had affection for her.
Their son while playing in the water when they went their on pilgrimage had been swallowed by Śaṅkhāsura. The word ha indicates joy because the Lord would show his greatness in surpassing death and prārabdha-karma. O king! Śukadeva calls out in astonishment at the request. Or rājan means the brāhmaṇa shone.
