तालत्रयं महासारं धनुर्यष्टिमिवेभराट् । बभञ्जैकेन हस्तेन सप्ताहमदधाद् गिरिम् ॥ २५ ॥

Verse text

tāla-trayaṁ mahā-sāraṁ dhanur yaṣṭim ivebha-rāṭ babhaṣjaikena hastena saptāham adadhād girim

Synonyms

tāla — trayam — as long as three palm trees ; mahā — sāram — extremely solid ; dhanuḥ — the bow ; yaṣṭim — a stick ; iva — as ; ibha — rāṭ — a royal elephant ; babhaṣja — He broke ; ekena — with one ; hastena — hand ; sapta — aham — for seven days ; adadhāt — held ; girim — a mountain .

Translation

With the ease of a royal elephant breaking a stick, Kṛṣṇa broke a powerful, giant bow three tālas long. He also held a mountain aloft for seven days with just one hand.

KB 10.46.25 “How wonderful it is that Kṛṣṇa took in one hand the big, heavy bow made of three joined palm trees and broke it very quickly! How wonderful it is that for seven days continuously He held up Govardhana Hill with one hand!

Purport

According to Ācārya Viśvanātha, a tāla (“palm tree”) is a measurement of about sixty hastas, or ninety feet. Thus the great bow Kṛṣṇa broke was two hundred seventy feet long.

"He broke a bow measuring three tala trees or 60 x 3 hastas. With one hand, his left hand, he held up the mountain for seven days."

Tāla means a tāla tree which is 60 hastas high. Or, Devakoṣa says that a tāla is nine vitasthis (9 inches x 9). He broke the bow like an elephant breaks a stick of sugar cane. He lifted the mountain with his left hand for seven days.
